The Zombots are the secondary antagonists in Years 2 and 3 of the IDW Sonic the Hedgehog comic series. They were originally inhabitants of Sonic's world until they were infected by the Metal Virus.
History[]
Infection[]
The first victim of the Metal Virus was a Pocky that Dr. Eggman was using as a test subject for his new Metal Virus. The Pocky was drenched in the Metal Virus which instantly transformed it into a Zombot. Afterwards, Eggman ordered the Zombot Pocky to grab and infect a Picky. The next test subject was a Ricky who Eggman repeatedly made contact with using the Zombot Pocky, causing the infection to accelerate.
While fighting Sonic and Amy in Echo Mine, Rough and Tumble were tricked into exposing themselves to the Metal Virus by releasing the backpacks given to them by Dr. Eggman, turning them both into Zombots. They both continued fighting Sonic and Amy, regenerating any damage that was caused to them. After getting himself infected, Sonic pushed both the Skunk Brothers into a pit. Eggman, after hearing Sonic call them "Zombots", decided to adopt the name because he thought it was more catchy.
In Tails' laboratory, Sonic discovered that he could use his super speed to keep the Metal Virus in check, but not fully remove it from his body. Meanwhile, Eggman used his Faceship to flood Windmill Village with his Metal Virus, causing all of the villagers to be transformed into Zombots either from direct exposure to the Metal Virus or from physical contact with other infected citizens. The newly-infected citizens followed Eggman's order to spread out across the countryside and infect other plants and animals. One Flicky was infected while sleeping in a tree that was exposed to the Metal Virus and transformed into a Zombot overnight before flying off to the nearest city.
Plague[]
Eggman's Faceship exposed Seaside City to the Metal Virus, creating even more Zombots. The Zombots soon made their way into the Chaotix' office, but the Chaotix managed to escape and see the damage that the Metal Virus was causing to the city. The trio then set out to distract the Zombots and bring the uninfected citizens to safety whilst Sonic saved Vector from being infected after he was surrounded. A rescue shuttle then arrived to take the Chaotix and the escapees to safety as the Zombots began making their way to the docks where they waited. As the Chaotix fought off the Zombots, Charmy decided to fly back into the city in an attempt to rescue an infected citizen that Vector had trapped between 4 cars, only to find that her infection was complete. Charmy then ended up being swarmed by more Zombots, leaving Vector and Espio with no choice but to leave without him.
Eggman continued to spread the Metal Virus at Floral Forest Village. As the Zombots began wreaking havoc and infected more villagers, Sonic came to hold them off and evacuate as many villagers as possible. During this, the Zombots were ordered by Eggman to pile up on Sonic; however, they ignored the command. Some Zombots went for Cream's residence, but Gemerl held them off. Gemerl planned on killing them, but Cream convinced him to fight without killing the zombots as they're victims. Meanwhile, some zombots managed to corner Cream and her mother, Vanilla, but Cheese and Chocola defended their family, at the cost of them getting infected and later transformed into zombots themselves. As the rabbit mother and daughter escaped, Sonic caught the attention of nearby Zombots, but Gemerl knocked them away. Sonic trapped the zombotified chao as he headed for Sunset City after getting a call from Rouge.
In Sunset City, a zombot outbreak has been occurring. Eggman hadn't been giving them commands, meaning they were doing damage by themselves. Zombots had been trying to infect civilians and attack Sonic as he passed through. While they failed to stop the hedgehog, a few managed to touch him and put more pressure on his infection. They also came under attack by E-123 Omega. Later, Shadow arrived in a truck, and drove straight through the Zombots. Noticing that the truck was being used to gather survivors, the Zombot hordes made it their primary target, but Omega was able to use his guns to hold them off Meanwhile, Shadow engaged another Zombot horde head-on, believing that his status as the Ultimate Life Form would prevent them from infecting him, but was eventually proven wrong. Despite getting infected and told by Rouge to leave, he ignored this and continued fighting anyway until he was overwhelmed by zombots and eventually became one of them himself. When Sonic returned after his latest run to burn off the Metal Virus, he was pinned against the truck by the newly formed Zombot Shadow.
Sonic fought Shadow and kept him and the other Zombots at bay while Rouge evacuated the area with the truck full of uninfected citizens. Omega stayed behind to fight more Zombots, but ended up getting his torso ripped open by Shadow and his arms torn off by two other Zombots. Silver used his telekinesis to save Sonic from further harm from the zombots and he managed to escape. After Silver released the Zombots, Shadow immediately attacked him. Silver narrowly dodged this attack and fled the scene with Tails.
Flock Together[]
Eventually, Charmy succumbed to his infection and joined a large flock of zombotified Flickies, but Vector managed to capture Charmy in a contaminent bubble.
The Last Minute and Catalyst[]
Another Zombot outbreak had been occurring at Central City after Dr Eggman had unleashed the Metal Virus there. An hour later, the Zombots began to roam the city streets, but Tangle and Whisper managed to hold them off and keep uninfected citizens safe. At some point, Whisper helped knock away some Zombots that surrounded Tangle when she was on a street light. Meanwhile, Silver was dealing with a Zombot outbreak in Ice Paradise and evacuated several uninfected citizens.
A flock of Zombot Flickies flew over to Tails' lab, but they didn't notice him, thus allowing the fox cub to return to his lab with a sample of the metal virus; However, Cheese and Chocola managed to locate him and invaded his lab. As all the uninfected citizens evacuated into HQ, one of the refugees revealed he had an infection on him and transformed into a Zombot. This caused a panic and the infected Charmy that Vector brought in with him broke free of his prison. The refugees quickly got infected, including Vanilla, who pleaded for Amy to get her daughter to safety as she was getting infected. Amy brings Cream to the launch bay, but Cream begs to go back for her mother as Amy turns to Espio and asks how the other pilots are doing. Espio informs her that only one pilot made it, along with a few refugees. Amy promises to be with Cream soon as she sadly watches Espio guide a broken Cream into the Rescue Shuttle.
Meanwhile, Vector works with Gemerl to keep the gate open for uninfected refugees, but as they close the gate, Charmy manages to squeak through the gates and Vector pins him to the ground, but infecting himself in the process. As he walks back to hold off the Zombots and tells Gemerl to shut the gates behind him, Vector declares Espio the new leader of the Chaotix just before the gates close. As Amy and Espio look on in total shock, Gemerl warns them that Vector will be able to break through the gates once he becomes a Zombot. Acknowledging the risk, Amy helps Espio stand up before the Rescue Shuttle takes off.
