The Windigos are recurring antagonists of the series My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.
Biography[]
Past[]
The Windigos have existed since ancient times. In the age before Equestria was founded, the three pony tribes (unicorns, pegasi and earth ponies) lived apart from one another. This eventually attracted the Windigos who fed off of their hatred, thus causing their land to be shrouded in an unending blizzard. They continued to distrust each other and as resources became bare which made everything even colder.
The ponies then decided to hold a summit to find a solution to their mutual dilemma. They vowed to settle their differences and discuss the problem accordingly, they all began blaming each other for the disaster and walk out in a huff, not knowing that the Windigos are watch from above. Upon returning home, each of the leaders then decide to leave their frozen land and find a new land for their tribes to live in far away from the other two.
Each group end up finding the same land to live in and upon running into each other while they began fighting again. As the new land became covered in ice as well, the six ponies found shelter in a nearby cave. There, the leaders continued to argue about their situation which caused the ice to cover up the entrance. Despite this, they refused to stop, and their bodies became encased in ice, frozen in their hatred of each other. Their companions huddled and finally noticed the Windigos flying above them. As Clover explained what they were, they all realized that it was their tribes' constant hatred that caused the blizzard. Upon which, even as their bodies freeze too, they decide that no matter how different they are from each other, they were all still ponies. At that moment, Clover unintentionally casted the "Fire of Friendship", which burned away at the Windigos, causing them to vanish.
After the Windigos were dispersed, Clover, Pansy and Smart Cookie told each other stories and sang songs to keep the Fire of Friendship. Eventually, all the ice surrounding them melted away while freeing the tribe leaders. After realizing the error of their ways, the leaders finally decided to share their land and live in harmony with each other. The great pony nation of Equestria was born and the event that lead to its founding was celebrated in the form of a holiday known as "Hearth's Warming Eve".
Present[]
The Windigos were featured throughout the Season 2 episode "Hearth's Warming Eve" where the Mane Six acted out the events that lead to Equestria's founding. The Windigos were seen three times at the conclusion of the grand summit which all the ponies of Equestria get into conflict with each other. The Windigos were first seen looking down from the clouds at the conclusion of the Grand Assembly. They later seen flying through the sky which they generate a circle of clouds while They're eventually defeated by "the fire of friendship", a pink flame that takes the shape of a heart which was created in the play when Clover, Smart Cookie, and Pansy become friends.
Although they appear to have been burnt to death, it is implied that they (or other members of their race if there are any) are still around in modern Equestria when one of their distinctive howls is heard through an open window when Rainbow Dash and Applejack start arguing about who has the responsibility of closing it. Interestingly enough, they have never threatened to return during any other arguments in the series (such as Applejack and Rarity in the episode "Look Before You Sleep") so the howl may have been simply someone playing the sound effect used to simulate them in the play while a way of breaking up Rainbow and Applejack's argument.
They also reappeared in "Hearth Warming Eve Tail" when Twilight read a story on the holiday to Starlight Glimmer to make her see its importance. This caused Snowfall Frost to realize the mistake she was going to make by erase The Hearth's Warming Eve, finally seeing its importance.
In "The Ending of the End: Part 2" when Queen Chrysalis, Lord Tirek and Cozy Glow turned the unicorns, pegasi and earth ponies against one another which allowed the Windigos to return and they began to feed on the animosity between the pony tribes. When the villains noticed them in the sky, Chrysalis and Tirek got into a debate on what they should do with the Windigos; for Chrysalis, once the Windigos make Equestria a frozen wasteland, she and her fellow villains will use their magic to destroy them which will allow Chrysalis to get the respect of all the creatures of Equestria. As for Tirek, he wanted to get rid of the Windigos to leave them unchecked. Ultimately, when Twilight Sparkle, her friends, the Pillars, and the Young Six, unleashed the power of Friendship against the villains, this caused the Windigos to dissipate.
