William Afton, also known as The Purple Guy, later dubbed Springtrap, is the main antagonist of the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise.
He is the co-founder of Fazbear Entertainment along with his business partner Henry Emily. However, he was secretly a serial killer who used the Springbonnie suit to lure and kill dozens of children. William Afton would later go onto being imprisoned by a vengeful spirit named Cassidy who happened to be one of his victims, however he continued his legacy via The Mimic and William's chaos would continue.
Note: Given that the Five Nights at Freddy's story is told out of chronological order, the history of William Afton is presented in the order the events occur to him.
Summary[]
William Afton was a businessman. In the early 1980s, he met an engineer named Henry Emily. The two opened Fredbear's Family Diner. At some point as seen in the FNaF 2 minigame, Take Cake to the Children, William drove up to a Freddy's and killed Henry Emily's daughter Charlotte, leading her to possess the Puppet.
William then used a Yellow Bonnie suit to lure 5 children into the Safe Room. As seen in the FFPS minigame Fruity Maze, he began with a girl called Susie, promising her that her dead dog was alive. After this the children’s corpses into Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie, Chica, Foxy, and Golden Freddy suits. After this, the Puppet gave them life, allowing them to possess the animatronics.
Five Nights at Freddy's 4[]
William appears in a cameo in the fourth game, set in 1983, helping out someone with the Spring Bonnie costume in the back room. He is the father of the Crying Child and the Older Brother (Michael Afton).
Five Nights at Freddy's 2[]
In the second game, set in 1987, he is implied to have been the nightguard before Jeremy Fitzgerald. During the summer of that year, He was attacked by the animatronics, and complained about conditions, and thus was moved to the dayshift. As indicated in the minigame SAVETHEM, he then went to use a spare yellow suit to murder 5 more kids, and could be seen attacking Freddy, leaving behind the message "You can't" in response to his and the Puppet's wish to save the children. This implies that by this point William Afton is aware of the souls of the children possessing animatronics. Afton also seems to be the one who altered the 'Toy' Animatronics facial recognition software, which made them hostile to the employees of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. Afterwards, he fled, leaving the day shift slot "available".
Sister Location[]
William Afton appears in Sister Location, this time actually using his real name. In the opening scene of Sister Location an entrepreneur asked him questions about the new animatronics. He inquired why certain features were added and express their concerns, but William avoided answering the specific features they refer to. He also created the animatronics and was the former owner of the Circus Baby's Entertainment and Rental and, by extension, Circus Baby's Pizza World. William had in fact created the animatronics to kill children. William’s daughter, Elizabeth, snuck off to meet Circus Baby. She got to close however and got scooper by Circus Baby. After this, William closed down the restaurant under the pretence of gas leaks, and moved the animatronics into the rental facility.
In FFPS, it's implied William gave the Scooper, used to dismantle animatronics, a second function, to inject a substance called Remnant into the animatronics, seemingly able to bind souls to bodies. At some point after setting up the rentals facility, he instructed his son Michael to go on a suicide mission to the underground facility and find his sister, indicating he knows his daughter's soul is within Circus Baby.
Five Nights at Freddy's 3[]
In the Night 5 minigame it is revealed that, after William destroyed the animatronics, he was chased by his victims into the Safe Room, which contained Spring Bonnie. After being chased around the Safe Room, William ran to Spring Bonnie and wore it to protect himself. The lock mechanism faltered as William laughed in the suit, as well as the fact that there was rain dropping down through the roof, due to the fact that the spring locks will break from moisture, thus killing him slowly as his body slumps to the floor. He then started to rot as 30 years pass by the year is exactly 2023. The Fazbear's Fright crew found him, and installed Springtrap into the attraction on Night 2.
When in Fazbear's Fright, Springtrap hunted the Guard. Springtrap usually hid on secluded areas of a camera's field of view, but stared straight into CAM 01, CAM 09, and CAM 13. When around The Office, Springtrap stared at the Guard through the window. When about to attack, he peeked in from behind the door. He also briefly appeared from the right, only to slink away. Springtrap was susceptible to audio distractions and constantly followed the source of the noise the Guard created, only following the sound when played in a location close to him. He was also susceptible to the vents being sealed, due to using them. After the ventilation system is left with errors for too long, which the guard started hallucinating, seeing multiple Springtrap's in the camera. After 5 nights of hunting the guard, the building burnt down. Springtrap was seen in the newspaper picture taken after the fire. He was then seen later in Sister Location again in a cut scene. Springtrap is seen to have survived the worst of the fire, and is seen leaving the burnt out husk of Fazbear's Fright.

Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator[]
Springtrap has returned in Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator under his real name, William Afton, and has deteriorated to the point where much of the suit has been replaced. Afton is one of the animatronics who received a call to gather at Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Place on Tuesday.
Unlike the other animatronics however, Afton suspected the call to be false, but decided to go anyway just out of curiosity. Michael Afton, his son, salvaged him, seemingly for scrap. If the player chose to discard him, the completion ending on Saturday is prevented, as all the animatronics need to be present in the Pizzeria. Henry played five different audio prompts through the tapes, and Michael had to document Afton's response times. After the fifth audio prompt, the salvage ended and Michael got $1000 for the salvage. Afton assured him that he knew the call was "deceptive," but it was intriguing.
From Wednesday onward, Afton hunted Michael through the vents, while being lured around by the sounds of children. On Saturday, it's revealed that Henry was responsible for sending out the call to the animatronics and had lured them all into a trap. Afton meets his final end when he is incinerated with the other animatronics, Michael and Henry, during which the Henry tells him, "...the darkest pit of hell has opened to swallow you whole, so don't keep the devil waiting old friend."

William Afton is heavily implied to be the protagonist of Ultimate Custom Night, having been sent to Hell after the events of Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator. It was a personal hell for him created by "The One [he] should not have killed", forcing him to fend off animatronics, before eventually getting killed by them, before the whole scenario would begin all over again, for eternity. A distorted voice, implied to be William's, could be heard in the Old Man Consequences minigame, screaming in rage.
Springtrap[]
Springtrap appears as a customizable antagonist in both his FNaF 3 and FFPS form. Springtrap sneaks through the Air Vents to get to the protagonist, with him being tracked by the protagonist. Springtrap is silent, and the protagonist checks if his face appears at the front vent. Closing the vent door sends Springtrap back to his original position. Afton only attacks once per night, with no warning, from the vent on the right wall. A violent clamoring sound and flickering lights are the only indication of his attack, and the protagonist has to close the vent door.
Help Wanted[]
Glichtrap, the main antagonist of Five Nights at Freddy's VR: Help Wanted, is implied to be a digital version of William Afton. They play a huge role in the game as they torment the player. They try mind controlling the player and anyone they come into contact with. In the game after the player finishes the game glitchtrap takes over the players mind in a way. This happens by them quite literally entering their mind they then become a servant of Afton's. They would soon mind control the tape girl (Vanny) as well as many other play testers. One of these testers was Jeremy Fitzgerald he resisted though, this would be futile as he would attempt to try and kill himself to try and resist Malhare's effect and it worked. Glitchtrap didn't seem to care much though about his death; they would be taken down by Golden Freddy. This would end Malhare and free all of William's servants putting a minor dud in his plans.

Springtrap is one of the the most difficult animatronics to defeat - his Static is very weak and the Flashlight is almost certainly required to find it; interference can occur with some regularity. Springtrap's Haywire is the key to winning this encounter, as there are two outcomes. If he goes Haywire and has red eyes, the player should immediately look away; failure to do so will end the encounter with a jumpscare. The player may pan over him quickly but should not stop to look at him. If he has white eyes, however, the player should proceed to watch him until his eyes turn red, or until he disappears. Springtrap will then rush the player three times, finally decloaking on the third charge.

Personality[]
William Afton was known for being a charming businessman who was incredibly smart and caring. Although this was merely a facade Afton had and was simply a polite mask he wore around others, in reality he was a horrible, cruel and sadistic murderer. William Afton is known for being extremely sadistic as he tortured his own creations by shocking them constantly and his son Micheal mentally by using the Nightmares to scare him and keep him in his room. He's extremely petty and refuses to take responsibility for his actions as shown by the fact that rather than accepting that he was indirectly responsible for the death of his youngest son (CC), this was because he constantly harassed Michael into the bully that he becomes and rather than apologizing for his actions he instead blamed Michael for the death of his youngest son and then became extremely abusive towards Michael. Furthermore William Afton shows no remorse for his actions in fact he enjoys what he does as he admits to Michael in FFPS that he found it interesting to see what his creations had become and he's obsessed with the idea of immortality. Although it's also possible that he may be suicidal since he knew what Henry's plans but came anyway, however he admits that it's out of curiosity and because he would get to murder more children.
This shows how cunning and intelligent Afton truly is because it shows how he's always one step ahead and constantly plotting. This often leaves his enemies guessing what he's going to do next and Afton loves watching his victims suffer. This is proven when in FNaF AR and in the books when he experiments on his victims and creates the nightmares and tortures children as well as force the player to fear him in FNaF AR. William is very calm, cool and collected; Afton has shown to lose his temper somewhat when his enemies don't fear him as Afton will do everything in his power to torture them mentally before killing them for his own sadistic reasons and frankly he has no problem using it on employees. He does this in one of the books (granted it was by accident, however he didn't mind that it was and relished in the chaos going on) William Afton is so sadistic that he enjoys springlocking some of his victims even children as evident with Cassidy's death.
William Afton is very quiet and doesn't talk very often unless it has to do with his experiments or taunting his victims. Despite Afton loving to watch his victims suffer he also is very cock and enjoy's taunting them, but he quiet when it comes to anything else; despite this he's a master at communicating since he's able to run an entire business. When Afton was asked about his creation Circus Baby he instead of giving the interviews what they wanted, William instead talked about how his creation Baby can dispense balloons and is capable of making ice cream. William has a love for science and enjoys talking about his creations, William has a love for blood as he likes to watch his enemies bleed out and also enjoys starving them to the point of near death. William after being trapped in a nightmare by a vengeful spirit had decided that instead of accepting his punishment forever he corrupted an AI known as Mimic1 to continue his legacy and cause havoc. William Afton shows no mercy for his actions or remorse in fact he sometimes dances after killing his victims out of raw sadism. William Afton may have also corrupted his daughter into becoming a killing machine, this would explain her behavior and why she's so sadistic and even enjoys killing her own father Afton.

High IQ - Afton is highly intelligent and cunning man. Hes intelligence give him ability to get away with hes crimes, and make keen and new plans to hes future crimes. He also show as charismatic and manipulative businessman.

Fear gas- William Afton had invented a hallucinogenic gas which causes people to hallucinate and make them see things which are frightening to them. He developed and created this gas specifically to experiment on kidnapped children and to study the effects of hallucinations, as shown in the 'Tales of the Pizzaplex' story: Dittophobia.
Possession- If Afton touches a living thing he can still infect them with Glitchtrap. This effect is slow but if the person is not near something very hot then they can't cure it. If it fully spreads on the organism they are completely under his control. It starts as a purple spot and slowly spreads across the organism, although they do not turn purple in the process but they will still have a purple spot in the area they were touched.
Mind control- Afton can mind control people as Glitchtrap to turn them into his servants.

Trivia[]
His actual motivation for killing the children is still a mystery, although many people assume he did as part of an experiment to become immortal. But other reasons as to why he may have killed was so that he could bring back his family, this however is just a theory which has been disproved on numerous occasions.
Many people think that Springtrap is possessed but that's NOT true. William Afton's corpse itself is in the suit and the corpse is still "alive" but the suit itself is not in his control. This is proven by the fact that Springtrap, unlike his victims, is still bound by the machines code because the springlock suits were programmed to follow audio which is why he is lured by the audio in FNaF 3.
Because of this it proves that springtrap is not possessed unlike his victims which would actually qualify purple guy as a zombie.
Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria Simulator implies the latter, as a blueprint reveals the Scooper’s purpose; to transfer remnant, a substance that gives a soul its ability to remain after death, into the animatronics.
Furthermore, a minigame accessed during the Midnight Motorist arcade game features a man depicted by a yellow sprite, who is shown to be abusive to his son. The "yellow man" is speculated by some to be William's father, and Michael and Elizabeth's paternal grandfather, causing some to believe that William's child murders stem from his own abusive childhood at the hands of his father.
Although it is more likely that the Yellow Guy is Afton himself. It is unknown why his sprite was changed from purple to yellow, though it is likely to not have him confused with Michael.
He is the main antagonist of the series. However, he did not appear in FNaF 1, but was referenced in newspapers about the Missing Children's Incident.
In Ultimate Custom Night, William reuses his line "I always come back" after his jumpscare. Ironically, his mechanic involves showing up once per night, so he definitely won't come back.
He is British.
He was arrested in 1985 as he was the prime suspect in the missing children incident. He was released however due to the lack of evidence.

Aaron Fechter, a engineering entrepreneur who created the Showbiz Pizza Place's animatronics. Scott Cawthon actually met Fechter in person.
This creepypasta, which tells the story of a mascot of Chuck E. Cheese who had severe mental problems and begun thinking that he was the real Chuck E. Cheese. However, he began killing children and using their meat for pizza.
Freddy Krueger, due to them both being sadistic child murderers who become more powerful in death.
The one confirmed inspiration is Hannibal Lecter, but that's only for his voice.
As of version 1.031 of FNaF 3, Springtrap now makes footsteps and moaning noises when he moves. Some people have assumed that the moaning noise is Afton inside of the Spring Bonnie suit trying to talk.
He is named after a trap device of the same name which is used for catching animals during hunting, and the fact that he is in a Springlock suit.
Occasionally, when the game starts up, one of three images of Springtrap revealing the William's mummified corpse inside of him may appear, similarly to the eyeless Bonnie screen from the first game and the eyeless screens from the second game.
Springtrap was originally considered to be the hardest character to deal with in AR until Golden Freddy was added in the game.
Before having his name confirmed, the most common name for this animatronic coined by fans was 'Golden Bonnie' as fans believed that Springtrap was somehow connected to the similar-looking animatronic Golden Freddy, while also retaining a resemblance to Bonnie.
Two more common fan-given names were 'Hybrid' and 'Salvage', for fans believed that Springtrap was made from the parts of dismantled animatronics.

Another coincidental detail is that Springtrap is implied to have been "salvaged" after the restaurant was shut down.
In the promotional photo for Sister Location, Circus Baby appears to be smiling at someone off-screen, and the figure reflected in her nose looks suspiciously like Springtrap - this led fans to believe he would return in Sister Location - while he was not the main antagonist, he did appear in an ending cutscene after the Custom Nights, revealing himself to still be alive after Fazbear's Fright burned down and foreshadowing his return in FFPS.
As well as being an antagonist in UCN, Springtrap can be seen in the FNaF 3 version of the Office. This is presumably a hallucination, as it doesn't disappear even when Springtrap is active.
Burntrap was the only antagonist in Security Breach's main game to be unable to attack and jumpscare the player directly.
Despite a few lines of dialogue in the Security Breach trailers seemingly coming from some form of Glichtrap, Burntrap never speaks throughout his entire encounter.
Upon close inspection, it can be seen that the unused model for Spring Bonnie that was originally intended for Help Wanted was partially reused and heavily edited for parts of Burntrap.
One of the character artists for Security Breach who worked on Burntrap, Johnathan Gonzalez, stated that his base model came from characters in Help Wanted.
Burntrap's name, while never mentioned in-game, was confirmed via his files, as well as Steel Wool's blog post for the February patch.
Despite this, the Character Encyclopedia states that "Burntrap" is not the character's canon name. Interestingly, no alternative name is given in the book.
While it is unknown who voices Burntrap's various laughs within the game, it is possible that it might've been Matthew Curtis, as he was originally meant to voice the character.
Burntrap's true identity is currently unknown. Many believe him to be a revived William Afton or even Glitchtrap, although this has yet to be debunked.
According to the Security Breach Files:Burntrap is referred to Afton, however, Fans noticed that the book has multiple errors, incorrect quotes and false informations, this is most likely one of the errors.

Some others believe him to be an incarnation of the Mimic having fused with the unidentified burnt corpse in Burntrap's body. Although there is little evidence for this theory.
Burntrap's design is very similar to that of Ignited Springtrap from The Joy of Creation. It's unknown if this is a coincidence or not.

What Makes him a Complete Monster?[]
He has complete moral agency and knows that what he's doing is wrong.
He has a body count of 11 kids and 1 dog.
He killed henry's daughter and this leads to her becoming the Puppet and depending on the ending leads to Henry killing himself out of grief.
While William may have done this out of drunken rage it doesn't make his actions any better nor does it excuse them.
While it's true that he has a tragic background which is implied by Henry's speech in FFPS, it doesn't excuse his actions and even Henry calls him "monster" and "creature" meaning that even Henry thinks that his tragic past is no longer able to justify his actions.
Furthermore he also taunts his son Michael and tells him he's "easy prey" and can smell his fear.
William caused the the bite of 87' since the dog he killed, Afton stuffed it into Mangle thus causing them to Bite Jeremy and cause "the Bite".
He also tampered with the toys which caused them to attack Michael and Jeremy in FNaF 2.
He did this in order to sneak in the building to kill kids and left the bodies out in the open.
While it's unknown why he did this it's theorized that it's because he was jealous and out of ego, due to him being kicked out of his own company and wanted to shut down Jr's.
He blamed Michael for the "bite of 83" even though William built Fredbear and frankly he also was watching Michael and CC. Rather than preventing this he decided to let it happen anyway and while it's possible that he thought they were just being siblings and playing, it doesn't make his actions any better for simply watching this happen rather than interfering.
Since Afton blamed his son for it, it's implied that William abused his son Michael for this constantly.
He destroyed the animatronics in the FNaF 1 location and did this to become immortal, thus making Afton a vandal.
He also used the dead dog to lure Suise (Chica) to her death and told her that her dog was still alive; this was a lie and used this lie to murder her by luring her and stuffing her in a suit.
William also ran over her dog with his car.
Furthermore William using Springbonnie to lure guest to the backroom is against company policy making him a corrupt official.
William built the Funtimes to murder children and kidnap them to become immortal and he also tortured them underground.
William is also heavily implied to have abused his employees at Afton Robotics.
He tricked his son Michael into freeing his sister only for him to get scooped.
He also made the Nightmares and kidnapped and tortured kids in the process and showed no remorse for his actions in the process.
William likely killed the kids or the nightmares did because after William experiments on them they are never seen again.
He is partially responsible for Micheal being blacklisted due to attacking guest in his restaurant.
Afton also would torment staff at Circus baby's as well as guest there with the gas that he made, the gas caused them to hallucinate and give into their fear, thus causing the nightmares to appear. It's likely that William did this out of raw sadism and nothing more.
He's indirectly responsible for The Missing Children killing innocent people and kids.
Afton before becoming Springtrap taunts the Missing Children by laughing at them after he destroyed their bodies.
While Michael likely cares about his father; at the very least respects him, William doesn't respect his son and completely hates and sees him as nothing more than a tool and something to kill.
He shows this time and time again in FFPS and FNaF 3 as Springtrap/Afton/Scraptrap and shows no remorse for these actions of his.
William also stalks Michael and likely his other victims to which means stalking can be added to his list of crimes.
William (at least according to Henry) in FFPS forces the other Scrap robots to aid him in killing.
He also takes sadistic pleasure out of murdering the kids, he admits in FFPS to Michael.
William also accepts the lure to murder more kids set by Henry.
Even though he knew what Henry was going to do and what his plans were, he still came likely out of raw sadism and nothing more.
While it's true that was Cassidy did to him was horrible he deserved it.
According to FNaF AR William likes to torture his opponents by using their fear on them to watch them cower. He often demands that his enemies fear him and he sadistically taunts them constantly.
Also according to it Afton has admitted to eating people which makes him a cannibal.
He likely doesn't care about his daughter due to her constantly taunting him in UCN.
Afton was confirmed to be Burnttrap which means that he mind-controlled and brainwashed many people into doing his bidding and worshipping him. All for the sake of murdering more kids and kidnapping them and William might have also tried to use the mimic in his evil plans to help him kill others.
There is a theory that William is actually possessing the Mimic and therefore all of their crimes are the same, if confirmed it would make both of them even worse.
