Villain Overview

We're going to heal the world. Let me show you. We're going to heal everyone.
~ The Symbiote showing Harry that they will "heal" the world together.
We are not "Harry". We. Are. Venom.
~ Harry transforming into Venom in front of Peter and MJ .

Harold "Harry" Osborn, later known as Venom, is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Doctor Octopus) of Marvel's Spider-Man video game franchise, appearing as a minor antagonist of Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales and the main antagonist of Spider-Man 2.

Peter Parker's lifelong best friend and he was born with a rare genetic disease inherited from his mother Emily, leaving him very sick and ill. Norman kept his son contained within a stasis tube and created the Devil's Breath serum in an attempt to heal him. Eventually, Norman bonded Harry to an alien parasite called a "symbiote" to keep him alive, temporarily curing him of his disease. Eventually the symbiote would leave Harry after Peter Parker was injured by warlord Kraven the Hunter to bond to him, to Harry's anger, before returning to him. Driven insane by the newfound power of the symbiote, Harry, now calling himself Venom, killed Kraven and set out to take over the world by infecting the entire population with symbiotes.

Voiced by Scott Porter in audio logs in the first game, Harry was voiced by Graham Phillips in the second game as himself, and Tony Todd as Venom.

Personality[]

Harry Osborn was originally a bright and cheerful friend of Peter Parker's, who he had hung out with a lot during their school days. He loved both his parents, with him wanting to follow his mother's footsteps in helping those in need as an environmental attorney. His mother's death would eventually serve as a motivation for him to help heal those in need around the world.

However, when he became inflicted with an illness, Harry's initial bright future took a negative turn. He slowly developed envy towards Peter, due to how successful Peter's life seemed in comparison to his but nonetheless, he still acted as a good and supportive friend of him, and when he was bonded with the symbiote for the first time, he was inspired to become a hero much like Peter, helping him on his missions as Spider-Man.

Despite this, his inner jealousy remained and it would ultimately come to fruition when being separated from the symbiote, developing a hatred for both Kraven the Hunter for nearly killing Peter and later Peter himself, believing that he would rather allow him to die after he had saved his. The symbiote in turn would develop a hatred for both Kraven and Miles Morales for separating it from Peter as well. Likewise, when both the symbiote and Harry reunite and bond with each other, their inner wrath and hatred allowed them to perfectly fuse together into the being known as Venom.

Initially, Harry was shocked at his transformation due to the actions he committed, including eating Kraven, but soon accepted his potential as Venom when the symbiote intended to fulfill their dream of healing the world through terraforming the world into symbiotes. Ultimately, Venom is the result of Harry's inner bitter feelings being unsuppressed, as well the symbiote's strong desire to be with its host. Due to this, Venom acts in a manner that suggests he is and has always been Harry, using both his memories and his motives to convert them as his own.

Despite his bitter feelings, Venom genuinely believes his actions help his hosts for the better, in which the symbiote was all the more willing to help make Peter be a better Spider-Man at protecting New York and later aiding Harry in accomplishing their goal of making the world a better place for everyone. It's also for this reason that Venom wants no harm done to Peter and instead wants him to rule the world together, due to both Harry and the symbiote's attachment to him.

However, this attachment does not extend towards Peter and Harry's friends and loved ones, as Venom is more than willing to endanger their lives and convert them into his minions without much regard for them. Part of this is due to the symbiote's feelings of betrayal and rejection from Peter, believing that his friends and family caused Peter to turn against it, as well as Harry's suppressed anger over his illness. The only possible exception to this would be Norman, who Venom considers himself to still be his son and that his state is exactly what Norman wanted, thus fulfilling his own goal of saving his son.

Because of the symbiote's corrupting nature however, Venom appears to have a warped sense of what his hosts really want. His actions are in response to Harry's desire for healing the world, but his solution to this goal is to terraform the world into symbiotes, in which while this would keep everyone healed, it would stripping away of their free will and reduce the world into a place full of feral monsters. By having complete control over everyone through his hive mind, Venom believes his actions to be a gift for all life without seeing the alternative negatives behind them. Because of this, Venom does not take it well when Miles accuses him of being motivated by selfish desires and feels betrayed that Peter wants to stop what he believed is what Peter and Harry always wanted.

In the end, however, Harry would come to realize that his actions as Venom have done more harm than it has done good for others. Due to this, he is more than willing to let Peter sacrifice him and the symbiote, as a means of ensuring that his actions as Venom would come to an end.

Biography[]

Harry was born to Emily and Norman Osborn, the latter of whom was CEO and founder of the widely successful multinational corporation Oscorp Industries. Emily and Harry shared a close bone, both having dreams of "healing the world". When he was only 15, Emily died from Oshtoran Syndrome, a rare genetic disease. During this time, Harry would form a friendship with Peter Parker and MJ Watson, becoming the latter's best friend. Eventually, however, it was discovered that Harry was suffering from the same disease which killed his mother, and would begin suffering symptoms which he claimed was him merely being hungover from partying. Despite his symptoms, Harry would create labs around the city to monitor hazards to the environment, much to the displeasure of his father. Harry was eventually reprimanded to a stasis tank within Oscorp, claiming to be on a trip to Europe.

This was juxtaposed against Norman's construction of the GR-27, a possible cure for Oshtoran Syndrome. During one of his tests, Norman attempted to cure a young boy named Martin Li with the serum, only for the experiment to go terribly wrong: the test gave Li superhuman abilities, but killed his parents in the process. This event would leave Li planning his revenge on Norman for years, as well as causing Norman's long time partner Otto Octavius to leave Oscorp.

One day, a meteorite crashed to Earth, which Oscorp discovered showed signs of life. The company discovered the creature was a "Symbiote", which could bond at a sub-cellular level with a human being. Norman attached the Symbiote to Harry, healing him of his disease.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2[]

At the beginning of the game, the Symbiote allows Harry to return home cured, and begins reconnecting with Peter and MJ. He hires Peter to work at the Emily May Foundation, a new start-up Harry has created in order to heal the world. While the three are at Coney Island, an error leads to a collapsing roller-coaster, and Peter's identity as Spider-Man is revealed to Harry. Harry also manifests black tendrils which allow him to help people. Eventually, he starts using the Symbiote to manifest a black suit of armor, and assist Peter and Miles in fighting a Russian warlord known as Kraven the Hunter, who intends to hunt all superpowers individuals in New York. However, the Symbiote begins to take a liking to Peter.

During a mission to save Oscorp scientist Curt Connors, who lost his arm discovering the Symbiote, from being turned into an anthropomorphic lizard by Kraven, Peter is heavily wounded, and the Symbiote leaves Harry to bond with Peter. Peter's superpowers are increased dramatically, but he begins to develop a crueler personality. Meanwhile, without the suit, Harry's disease returns, forced to yet again make use of a cane. He does manage to help Peter cure Connors, but a strain begins to form in their friendship. At the same time, Peter becomes increasingly more twisted as the darker elements of his personality come forth. One night, the suit outright takes control, and he chases down MJ, which he forgets the next day. When Miles is captured by Kraven, Peter attacks his hideout, leading to a one-on-one fight. Kraven attempts to goad Peter into killing him which Peter almost does before being stopped by Miles. The two fight, and Miles manages to convince Peter to tear the suit off, which he does.

When Peter returns to Oscorp to destroy the Symbiote, Harry arrives, and destroys the canister containing it. Upon bonding with the Symbiote, Harry mutates instead into a far muscular version of Peter's traditional Spider-suit, albeit with the black and white color palette, and rows of teeth combined with an elongated tongue. Norman arrives as Harry transforms, and demands his employees remove it from Harry's body. Harry kills almost all of them, and escapes the building, before attacking Kraven and his hunters. Believing himself to have finally found a worthy opponent, Harry and Kraven have a fight, as Kraven, who is dying of cancer, seeks to die at the hands of a worthy opponent. Harry defeats Kraven, and bites his head off. However, Harry is horrified by his actions and goes to his mother's grave. There, the Symbiote, using the voice of his mother, manipulates Harry, playing into his dream of healing the world, by making everyone else infected by Symbiotes.

Harry then uses the power of the meteorite to infect people with less powerful Symbiotes. He then goes to MJ's house to lure Peter there. During the conversation, he is insulted by Peter calling the Symbiote a "thing". Now dubbing himself "Venom", he infects MJ, turning her into Scream, and leaves Peter to fight her. After saving MJ, Peter is given the Anti-Venom Symbiote, a combination of the remnants of the original Symbiote within him and Mister Negative's abilities, allowing him to take down many of Venom's spawn. In order to get Venom away from the meteorite, Peter lures Venom away from his lair, allowing MJ and Miles to take it to the Emily May Foundation to use a particle accelerator to destroy it. Venom eventually realizes this and sprouts wings to return to the meteorite, leading to a confrontation with Miles. He is ultimately defeated when the meteorite is destroyed, killing the Symbiote and leaving Harry comatose.

Trivia[]

  • Venom is overall the second role of Tony Todd in which he merely voices the character in a way his secret identity is hidden and played by another actor, his first being the Arrowverse's take on Zoom in The Flash. This is ultimately played with, in that while Todd does have a few lines as Venom before Harry Osborn fuses with the symbiote again, Todd starts voicing the symbiote regularly after it has rejoined Harry, and most of the cast are aware that Harry is wearing the symbiote.
  • Tony Todd stated that he really enjoyed playing Venom in Marvel's Spider-Man 2, citing Venom as one of his favorite characters.
  • This is one of the few incarnations of Venom who has no intention of murdering Peter after the latter forcefully separates from it.
  • This is the second interpretation of Venom not to have Eddie Brock as its host the first being the Ultimate Spider-Man TV series, where Harry Osborn was also Venom. Marvel's Spider-Man 2 creative director, Bryan Intihar stated this was because they wanted to tell an original story and something that departures from the Marvel Comics and films.
  • In contrast to other iterations of the character (and even symbiotes in general) where extreme heat is one of his few weaknesses, this incarnation of Venom is immune to fire.
  • A small running gag throughout the third act involves Venom getting offended when people refer to him as a "thing". This is likely an allusion to his Sony's Marvel Universe counterpart's contempt towards being referred to as a "parasite".
  • Venom's plan to turn the entire world into symbiotes is similar to the symbiote's Web of Shadows counterpart.
  • This is the second time Venom has been a playable character in a Spider-Man video game, the first being the 2005 video game Ultimate Spider-Man. Much like his counterpart in said video game, Venom is the first ever character in Marvel's Spider-Man to be playable while also serving as an antagonist.
    • Peter shares this distinction as well, albeit in the opposite way, serving as a boss to be fought by Miles after being pushed too far by Kraven with the black suit on despite being one of the game's primary protagonists. Much like Harry, it's due to him falling victim to the symbiote's corruption.
  • Scott Porter, who voiced Harry Osborn in Marvel's Spider-Man, was recast with Graham Phillips in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 because the developers wanted to have Harry play a more prominent role in the story, in addition that they wanted to go "photorealistic" and Porter's age gap would likely have some issues with that.
  • When Harry first fully dons the symbiote to help out Peter, the suit heavily resembles Agent Venom.
  • The symbiote's archive footage name, GR-35, is a reference to its proper debut in the Ultimate comics, Ultimate Spider-Man #35. Its codename, VNM-252, is a reference to its original debut in the comics, first appearing in The Amazing Spider-Man #252.
