History

Background

The Tyrannosaur was born around 1988, inside the InGen Compound of Isla Sorna (Site B), along with another Tyrannosaurus. It was at this compound where Roberta spent the first few months of her life inside the lab being taken care of by her handlers before she was transported to Isla Nublar to live in the Tyrannosaurus Paddock as an attraction for Jurassic Park.

Jurassic Park

When the inspection team constituting of vertebrate paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant, paleobotanist Dr. Ellie Sattler, chaotician Dr. Ian Malcolm, lawyer Donald Gennaro, and John Hammond’s grandchildren Lex Murphy and Tim Murphy took a tour of the Park, the Tyrannosaurus was initially a no-show. Although computer technician Ray Arnold attempted to lure her to her paddock fence by tantalizing her with a goat, however, Roberta still refused to answer the call.

Later that night, a tropical storm forced the tour to be turned around sometime after the group visited the Triceratops Paddock. Unfortunately, due to Dennis Nedry’s tampering with the programming, the tour vehicles that the tour group was in, shut down in front of the paddock with its electrified fencing also shut down. Tim then observed water in a cup having rhythmic ripples caused by Roberta walking close by, Tim then noticed the goat was gone, at which point Lex asked: “Where’s the goat?” Roberta then revealed herself to the visitors by ripping apart the goat left by the fence as bait. Gennaro, in a fit of panic, left his tour car and ran to the nearby restroom hut for refuge. By that point, the Tyrannosaurus moved to the disabled fencing and ripped the fencing apart with her teeth, she proceeded to step through her mangled handy work. After a minute or two of exploring and investigating the Explorers, her attention was aroused by the light that was emitted from a flashlight Lex had activated on accident in the front Explorer. Unaware that the source of the light was inside the car, she walked to the front door Gennaro left open and peered into the front doors of the SUV. It was not until Tim slammed the open door shut next to the T. rex that she had discovered the source of the light.

Now confident that the light was coming from inside the Explorer and that there were interesting objects inside, she set to attacking the mysterious vehicle in front of her, searching for a way to get at Lex and Tim. Thanks to the efforts of Dr. Grant and Dr. Malcolm, the T. rex was briefly distracted. Roberta followed fleeing Dr. Malcolm toward the Tyrannosaurus Paddock Bathroom, injured him as he was flung into the building, she then found and ripped apart the cowering Gennaro while Dr. Grant rescued Lex from inside the car, not long after freeing Lex, Roberta returned and pushed the vehicle over the cliff while Tim was still inside. After Dr. Grant rescued Tim from the tree, the two with Lex, began their trek back to the Visitors Center, Park game warden Robert Muldoon and Dr. Sattler arrived at the Tyrannosaurus Paddock to retrieve those who had been stranded there only to find Roberta's mess. Acting quickly, the two began searching for the group and calling out their names. At the site of the collapsed restroom hut, Muldoon and Dr. Sattler found the remains of Donald Genarro and recovered Dr. Malcolm who was quite injured, but alive due to his quick thinking to reduce blood loss by using his belt as a tourniquet. After loading Dr. Malcolm into their Jeep, the two took one last sweep of the area, Dr. Sattler spotted the ruined hulk of the second tour car that Roberta had pushed over the cliff adjacent to her Paddock. Although Muldoon and Dr. Sattler did not find Tim, Lex, or Dr. Grant, they did find their shoe prints in the mud, which told them that they were indeed alive. While the two were gone, Dr. Malcolm observed the water in Roberta’s footprints having rhythmic ripples, announcing her close presence. When the two returned to the Jeep, Roberta crashed through a line of trees and began chasing the three along a service road. After a very close chase, the Tyrannosaurus was unable to chase down her prey and gave up her pursuit.

The next day, as Grant’s, Tim’s, and Lex’s trek continued, they found themselves in the Gallimimus Enclosure and witnessed Roberta hunting the herd of Gallimimus. After watching in amazement for a while from behind a fallen log, Lex begged Dr. Grant for them to go, to which Grant obliged. However, Tim continued to stare in fascination and so had to be forcibly taken away by Dr. Grant. Roberta was seen later that day when she actually followed the Raptor that had come through the plaster cover in the wall, and grabbed the same Raptor from mid-air just as it was to pounce on the humans and crushed it in her jaws, killing it. Using the distraction Roberta provided, the humans fled the island. Meanwhile, the Raptor, who was The Big One that pursued the group through the Visitors Center, foolishly attacked the larger theropod possible trying avenge the death of her partner. Roberta snapped at her but could not reach her. she rolled her head, and the Raptor fell into the T. rex's mouth where she was killed and then thrown against the Tyrannosaurus skeleton and then Roberta let out a mighty bellow in triumph. After this battle, she roamed around Isla Nublar as top predator of the island.

Jurassic Park: The Game

During that night of another tropical storm, Roberta began wandering farther from her paddock area. As Dr. Gerry Harding and his daughter, Jess Harding, were heading for the boat to the mainland after Gerry returned to the site of a sick Triceratops to pick up Jess in his gas powered jeep, they found Nima Cruz, a corporate spy who went to search for Nedry after he failed to arrive at the East Dock. As the three made their way, they come across Bahkita, an infant Triceratops that was out of her paddock. They managed to get the dinosaur back into her enclosure, but Lady Margaret, the alpha female, appeared and attacked, which also attracted the attention of Roberta, who confronted Lady Margaret. The group barely managed to escape, hiding in a maintenance shed while the dinosaurs fought and decided to spend the night inside. It is unknown what was the outcome of this fight, but it is known that Roberta survived and that Lady Margaret lost a horn.

Later, she returned when Dr. Gerry Harding, Jess, and Nima Cruz reached the Visitors Center. While the humans were inside, Dr. Harding spoke with Dr. Laura Sorkin over the radio, who helped cure Nima of her ailment caused by a Troodon bite. Roberta attacked once again, forcing the trio to avoid her as best they could while Gerry tried to stop Nima from shaking and Jess used the center's pillars to stay hidden. To get the Tyrannosaurus' attention, Gerry dropped a box that hit Roberta on the back. Jess grabbed the tranquilizer darts and ran upstairs to help Gerry where they healed Nima. Roberta proceeded to follow Jess up the stairs, but at the last second, the staircase collapsed, causing her to fall and crash to the floor. When Roberta regained balance, the vibration of her feet caused Jess to fall while the trio was escaped just outside on the roof.

Even though Jess caught a ledge preventing her falling, she soon lost her grip and fell further down, now hanging onto the door frame. Dr. Harding came down from the roof to help her though soon Roberta charged through the doors, knocking Dr. Harding back. The predator then snapped at Jessica as she dangled from the door frame. As Dr. Harding grabbed his tranquilizer gun, Jessica finally lost balance and landed on top of Roberta's snout, which prompted the Tyrannosaur to shake Jess off. Nima, fully recovered now, tossed the tranq darts to Dr. Harding who shot Roberta in the face three times, saving Jess from potentially being eaten. However, her retaliation was quick and she soon charged through the door frame, destroying it. Roberta then proceeded to attack the tour vehicle that the Hardings were behind using as shelter. The T. rex's attack on the Hardings finally came to an end when Dr. Harding told Dr. Sorkin to start the tour vehicle, which distracted Roberta.

After a second mercenary team landed on the island to rescue those who had been left behind and retrieved the survivors, the group headed back to the helicopter, but found that the mercenary Daniel Cafaro had disappeared. Roberta reappeared and made her way towards them, forcing Oscar Morales to fix the chopper himself. She finally reached them just as they managed to get the helicopter working again. As the helicopter was taking off, Roberta nudged it, causing the aircraft to swerve, but Yoder ultimately piloted the helicopter to safety and evaded the dinosaur.

After Jess helped Dr. Sorkin in the Parasaurolophus Enclosure, Nima got into a fight with Billy Yoder, who was sitting in a tree, Roberta appeared again, chasing a juvenile Parasaurolophus, but then Yoder almost fell, although he grabbed a branch in order to save himself. The T. rex, having noticed this, picked up a piece of helicopter wreckage with her jaws, and launched it at Yoder in an attempt to knock him out of the tree. Yoder let go at the last second and landed hard on the forest floor. Then he and Nima began to run away from Roberta as she catches up to them towards the Parasaur Paddock. Inside, Roberta became distracted with a Parasaurolophus carcass and briefly during the feeding killed a Velociraptor that had been eating the carcass as well when it attempted to escape. Yoder immediately returned to the paddock to retrieve the Barbasol can he had dropped when he was in the enclosure, thinking that Roberta would be too distracted with the freshly killed Parasaur carcass. But just as he was about to pick it up, his nervous movements caught the Tyrannosaurus's attention. At that very moment, Yoder then attempted to be nice, and tried to sweet talk his way out of being eaten. Realizing this wouldn't work, he grabbed the embryos and ran. When Roberta was just about to kill him, Nima shut the door to the Maintenance Tunnels in the large dinosaur's face.

Sometime later, Roberta confronted the group one last time during the conflict between Nima and Billy. She stalked into the shipping yard, forcing all four of the humans to freeze in their positions. The T. rex started to sniff at Jess when her father gently nudged the cryocan with his foot, causing it to roll toward the dock’s edge. In a momentary lapse of judgment, Yoder scrambled to save the can before it fell into the water. Although he had saved the can, he had caught the attention of the large theropod, who growls behind Yoder. Roberta only hesitated for a brief moment before she engulfed the man with her jaws and lifted him in the air to consume him, causing Yoder to drop the can. With the T. rex's back turned to them and Nima racing to retrieve the can, the Hardings followed closely behind. Roberta was alerted by the movement behind her and chased after them. Nima and Jess squeezed into shelter while Dr. Harding was left outside.

Dr. Harding then attempted to distract Roberta in order to keep her attention away from the two ladies. The T. rex damaged the bridge platform the pair was standing on, flinging Jess over the edge. Jess managed to keep herself from falling off the bridge together but was dangling mere feet from the T. rex. She pleaded for Nima’s help and was saved from the jaws of the predator at the expense of the cryocan that was crushed under Roberta's foot. Dr. Harding, while the dinosaur had turned to face Nima and Jess, grabbed a steel pipe. He swung the pipe against Roberta's leg, successfully gaining her undivided attention and allowing his companions to escape to the last remaining boat at the end of the docks. Dr. Harding scrambled through the container yard with Roberta catching up in pursuit. Dr. Harding eventually found cover inside a cage, although Roberta could not reach the man with her jaws due to the small opening at the end that was suited for caging smaller dinosaurs. Frustrated, she thrashed about and finally flung the cage toward the pier that the small boat was located.

Dr. Harding noticed that he was less than a one hundred meters from salvation and scrambled to his feet in which he then sprints for the boat that his daughter was pull-starting. Roberta crashed through the gate that separated the pier from the container yard and started to pursue Dr. Harding while nipping at his heels. As he neared the end of the dock, Dr. Harding jumped onto the moving boat as Roberta made one last attempt to grab him. The boat successfully swept its three passengers away from the enraged Tyrannosaurus, who roared loudly at the group and watched as they escaped the island.

Jurassic World

After 22 years later during her time of freedom she was able to survive from the other herbivores that were around, during the construction of Jurassic World, the Tyrannosaurus rex was put back into captivity through unknown methods. She now lives in the T. rex Kingdom attraction of the dinosaur park. Around the same time, all if not most of the Isla Sorna dinosaurs were transported to the park.

The Tyrannosaurus mainly stayed in her paddock for most of the incident. Using flares, Claire Dearing guided the T. rex to the Indominus rex, where she threw the flare at the latter. When the flare hit the I. rex, the Tyrannosaur attacked her viciously. The T. rex initially had the advantage, landing several blows and drawing blood from the I. rex, but the latter soon became the dominant opponent in the conflict, pinning the Tyrannosaurus to the ground. However, before the I. rex could finish her off, Blue intervened and lunged onto the I. rex's neck, giving the Tyrannosaurus time to get up off the ground. With Blue latched onto the I. rex, the T. rex grabbed the Indominus dragging her into the nearby buildings of the Main Street. The T. rex finally dragged the carnivore near the edge of the Jurassic World Lagoon, where the Mosasaurus that resided there leaped out of the water to snatch the I. rex. The Mosasaur brought the Indominus rex into the lagoon, killing her. After the fight, the Tyrannosaur and Blue looked at each other for a moment, before the former left to roam te island. Roberta later let out a triumphant roar from the Control Center helipad while surveying the ruined park. She had remained as Queen of Isla Nublar.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

Three years after the destruction of Jurassic World, the T. rex appears at the former theme park after having sensed a disturbance in her territory. A group of men have entered the lagoon in an attempt to retrieve a DNA sample from the Indominus rex skeleton lying at the bottom. She ambushes a worker in a yellow raincoat who is controlling the gate to the exhibit with a remote. As she is chasing him towards a helicopter, she steps on the remote which stops the gate from closing all the way, allowing the Mosasaurus to escape into the ocean.

She then tries to pull the helicopter down by the ladder, but the ladder breaks and she is left holding a piece of it as the chopper flies away. She roars in anger just as the Mosasaurus leaps from the ocean, grabbing the man in the yellow rain coat who is still clinging to what was left of the ladder. The rest of the men get away with the I-Rex sample. Roberta appears again when Owen, Claire and Franklin are fleeing from the erupting volcano after being left to die by the mercenaries. The group finds a Gyrosphere but before Owen gets in, a Carnotaurus appears. Just as it is about to lunge at Owen, the T. rex lunges and throws the Carnotaurus down, roaring triumphantly as the volcano erupts behind her. She then runs off, fleeing with the rest of the dinosaurs.

After escaping the Gyrosphere underwater, Owen, Claire and Franklin briefly see the T. rex being carried onto the ship along with several other dinosaurs, including Blue. The trio sneak on board as the ship is leaving and locate Blue, who will need a blood transfusion to survive after being shot in a recent confrontation. Claire and Owen sneak into the cage holdig the sedated Tyrannosaur to take her blood, as she is the most similar animal on board to Blue and therefore the safest bet to donate blood. The T. rex is asleep, however she moves her head against Owen making retrieving her blood difficult. Claire has to climb on her back to reach the vein. During the process, some workers notice the door to the Tyrannosaur's cage is open, and shuts it, trapping Owen and Claire inside with her.

Moments later, the T. rex wakes up and begins thrashing around. Claire manages to slip through the bars on the top of the cage and opens the door to free Owen. The T. rex is still thrashing about, and Owen is trapped. He leaps through the T. rex's mouth seconds before her jaws snap shut, and they duo lock her in, leaving her roaring angrily and trying to escape. Luckily Claire managed to get the blood out and they are able to save Blue. Later, Owen and Claire are captured, and the Tyrannosaurus rex is seen being ushered into a holding pen barely big enough for her to stand. She is fed a goat on the way to the basement of the Lockwood mansion where all the dinosaurs are being held in preparation for auction.

Owen unleashes a Stygimoloch to the auction room during the showing of the Indoraptor and the T. rex never makes it to auction. She is presumably still in her cage during the fight with the Indoraptor in the mansion. Later, Claire lets all the dinosaurs out of their cages to free them from the toxic gas. She later refuses to open the doors leading outside, however, dooming the animals to die with the gas still going off. However, just as it seems that all the dinosaurs will be killed, the doors begin to open. Maisie explains that she felt compelled to free them because she feels a kinship to them as they are also clones. The dinosaurs rush to freedom, escaping into the wild. Eli Mills is seen barely dodging the stampede with the Indominus sample and takes refuge under the car, which is quickly trampled and destroyed in the stampede. As Mills gets up from underneath his wrecked car and picks up the I. rex fragment, the Tyrannosaur suddenly appears and snatches him in her jaws, brutally shredding him before tearing him in half with a Carnotaurus, and ultimately devouring Mills. The Tyrannosaur then knocks over the Carnotaurus with her head, scaring it off in the process. The Tyrannosaurus triumphantly roars and walks away, destroying the I. rex fragment in the process.

The T. re is then seen breaking into a zoo exhibit and roaring at a lion as Ian Malcolm is heard in voice over condoning the serious of events that have lead to dinosaurs being set loose on the mainland.

Jurassic World: Dominion

The Tyrannosaurus is confirmed to appear in the final installment of the Jurassic World trilogy.

Personality

Like any tyrannosaurus, Roberta is normally an animal who relies solely on her predatory instincts to survive. However, she is seen to be curious particularly towards bright flashing lights (flares, flashlights, etc.) although being already a carnivore, Roberta has seen to be particularly angry. At one point, she crushes one of the tour vehicles believing it to be an enemy and later pushes it to the ledge to eliminate those that trespass on her territory. Even though she was born with a genetic defect where her vision is based on movement, Roberta is able to sense potential prey or enemies despite their best efforts to hide and she has seen to be creative in flushing them out.

After the fall of the original Jurassic Park, Roberta had been the queen of the island for many years before she was finally captured and placed into a paddock for Jurassic World. Her time in captivity and her advancing age has tempered much of her old behavior, seemingly content feeding on the goats she was provided. When the Indominus Rex was unleashed upon Jurassic World, Claire Dearing released Roberta to combat the hybrid, showing to those present including the Indominus rex that she is a force of nature that should not be messed with.

It's heavily implied that Roberta has a degree of intelligence, enough to allow her to be able to be creative as mentioned earlier. Other evidence in the later films show that she is able to cooperate when certain situations arises, such as working together with Blue as a perfect team to end the threat of the Indominus Rex. Roberta might have even formed fondness to those that help her. Though harmed by Velociraptors long ago, Roberta sees Blue is different from her kind and went away thankful, but spares her rather than killing Blue.

Powers and Abilities

Powers

  • Tyrannosaurus rex Physiology: Roberta possesses incredible feats of strength, durability, endurance, speed, senses and intelligence, even for a Tyrannosaurus as she is possibly more powerful than any other Tyrannosaurus seen in the franchise.
    • Enhanced Strength: Roberta is far stronger than humans, animals, other tyrannosaurus and most other dinosaurs; for example, she was able to take out two raptors relatively easily and had managed to fend off the Indominus rex for a brief period of time, while also strong enough to be able to ram the hybrid into several objects, including buildings. In Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, she easily took down a Carnotaurus with little to no effort and then later defended her prey from another one outside of Lockwood's manor.
    • Enhanced Durability: Roberta is far more durable than humans, animals, other tyrannosaurus and most other dinosaurs; for example, after the fall of Jurassic Park, she survived on Isla Nublar for nine years until 2002 when Vic Hoskins and his team recaptured her. While roaming free after escaping her paddock in 1993, she killed one Velociraptor and fought and killed a second, sustaining deep slashes on her neck which would then harden into scars. In Jurassic World, she fought the Indominus rex, surviving multiple bites, several slashes and being slammed to the ground. In Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Roberta was even tasered several times by mercenaries pushing her into the elevator to take her down to a cage.
    • Enhanced Endurance: Roberta's endurance is far more greatly developed than humans, animals, other tyrannosaurus and most other dinosaurs; for example, she was able to take attacks from the Indominus rex and still fight back.
    • Enhanced Speed: Roberta is much faster than humans, animals, other tyrannosaurus and most other dinosaurs; for example, she was able to chase down a jeep and even managed to get to the Visitor Center within seconds. Roberta even managed to quickly catch up to a herd of Gallimimus, later Claire Dearing and then a worker in a yellow raincoat who was controlling the lagoon gate to the Mosasaurus exhibit with a remote.
    • Enhanced Stamina: Roberta possesses far more stamina than humans, animals, other tyrannosaurus and most other dinosaurs, allowing her to remain physically active for long periods of time; for example, she is able to hunt her prey, being able to survive on Isla Nublar for 9 years prior to being recaptured for Jurassic World and fight the Indominus rex relatively easily without getting tired.
    • Enhanced Senses: Roberta's senses is far more greatly developed than humans, animals, other tyrannosaurus and most other dinosaurs; for example, she is able to pick up the scent of any human or dinosaur a mile away while being able to attack her prey by movement.
    • Enhanced Bite: Roberta has a particularly strong and powerful bite, either because of her sharp teeth, jaw-muscles, unusual jaw-structure or some other reason. Exactly what she can bite depends on the jaw-strength, resilience of her teeth/bite-surface and her shape.
    • Enhanced Intelligence: Roberta is far more intelligent than humans, animals, other tyrannosaurus and most other dinosaurs; for example, she was able to sneak against the raptors without being noticed. Roberta was also able to test the fences were shut down. After the events of both Jurassic Park and Jurassic World, she was intelligent enough to know how to survive in the wild. She even understood that Blue had saved and joined her in the fight against the Indominus rex.
    • Predatory Instincts: Roberta possesses extraordinary predatory instincts for hunting all things such as dinosaurs, goats and humans. She can track anything under any conditions, sense the weaknesses of her prey and exploit them before finally succeeding in killing them.

Abilities

  • Expert Combatant: Due to Roberta's strength, durability and speed, she is an excellent combatant; as she along with Blue, was able to battle against the Indominus rex, eventually forcing the hybrid dinosaur near the Jurassic World Lagoon, leading to her death at the jaws of the Mosasaurus. In Jurassic Park: The Game, Roberta was able to fight against the alpha-female Triceratops Lady Margaret.
  • Expert Tracker: Due to Roberta's senses of smell, she has excellent binocular vision; as she can find, spot or track things, including light such as flares, humans and dinosaurs, regardless of the distance.

Trivia

  • Her nickname "Roberta" has become a popular name for her among fans, including Colin Trevorrow, the director of Jurassic World and Jurassic World: Dominion.
  • Roberta also appears as a cameo in another Steven Spielberg movie, Ready Player One. She acts as a challenge on the racetrack near the beginning of the movie, attacking drivers alongside various obstacles and King Kong.
