Biography[]

Season 3[]

In "Animaestro", Tomoe first appears attending the premiere of Les Aventures de Ladybug & Chat Noir with her daughter. She and Kagami are greeted by Adrien, Nathalie Sancouer, and Gabriel (attending the event via tablet), and hands over some documents to Gabriel, stamping one of them with her signature. Later, she speaks to Adrien and compliments him, claiming to now understand why Kagami talks so much about him.

In "Backwarder", Tomoe and Kagami join the Agrestes in attending a wedding in England. While on the train with Gabriel, Tomoe senses his unease at being away from home, advising him not to give in to his fears. She is then shown being surprised as Gabriel suddenly stands from his seat and heads to the bathroom (plotting to Akumatize Marianne Lenoir).

In "Feast", Tomoe listens to Clara Contard's report on the sudden reappearance of the Guardians' Temple in Tibet (as a result of the Dormant Sentimonster's defeat), appearing intrigued.

In "Ikari Gozen", Tomoe practices fencing with Kagami in the Jardin des Tuileries. When Kagami claims that she is unworthy to fight her, Tomoe lectures her on the story of the legendary samurai warrior Tomoe Gozen, who did not give up in spite of female warriors being unaccepted. She overhears Kagami's phone notify her that she has been accepted into Paris' Friendship Day competition, becoming displeased hearing that her daughter has signed up for it without her permission. She and Kagami then walk to her self-driving car, Tatsu, where Kagami mentions that Adrien is also participating in the contest; in response, Tomoe criticizes Gabriel Agreste for being too permissive with his son, remarking that he is more blind than she is. Tomoe orders Tatsu to take her to the Grand Palais, and then take Kagami back home, claiming that she will return in two hours. With her mother gone, Kagami fools Tatsu into taking her to participate in the Friendship Day contest, intending to finish within two hours.

During the contest, Kagami ends up being partnered with Marinette, who attempts to sabotage them in order to prevent the former and Adrien from being together; however, she relents after realizing that Kagami has no other contacts than her mother, and genuinely wishes to become her friend. Not long after, Tomoe calls her daughter upon realizing that she isn’t at home, and becomes even more enraged when Marinette answers the phone, inadvertently revealing that Kagami had disobeyed her orders and participated in the contest. Sensing her frustration at being disobeyed, Hawk Moth sends his Akuma (initially intended for Kagami) towards Tomoe, akumatizing her and Tatsu into Ikari Gozen—a giant, mechanical centaur-like samurai.

Ikari leaps over to Kagami and Marinette, yelling at her daughter for disobeying her, stating that she will never go outside again. She then grabs and swallows Kagami, trapping her within her car interior-like stomach. Marinette transforms into Ladybug and faces Ikari alongside Cat Noir, soon retrieving the Dragon Miraculous from Master Fu in order to defeat her. Upon returning, Ladybug deduces that Ikari's Akuma is inside her bokken, and uses her Lucky Charm to summon a box of bath bombs, quickly formulating a plan. Ladybug and Cat Noir subsequently launch the box and Dragon Miraculous into Ikari's mouth, which both reach Kagami. Kagami dons the Dragon Miraculous and meets its Kwami, Longg; however, rather than listen to him explain Ladybug's plan, she impulsively transforms into Ryuko, using her Wind Dragon power to escape her imprisonment.

Against Ladybug's wishes, Ryuko confronts her mother—thereby exposing her secret identity to Hawk Moth—who demands that Ikari obtain her Miraculous as well. Ikari lambasts her daughter for disobeying her again and duels with her, resulting in Cat Noir being swallowed and imprisoned. Ladybug and Ryuko take cover, where the latter apologizes for her hasty behavior and complies with Ladybug's plan to stop Ikari; thus, presenting and surrendering herself to her mother. Ikari remarks that her daughter has finally learned sense and swallows her; within Ikari, Ryuko uses her Water Dragon power and dissolves the bath bombs. Ikari becomes weakened by this and spits out Cat Noir, who destroys her bokken with his Cataclysm.

Tomoe is de-akumatized and questions where her daughter is, with Ryuko assuring her that she will be there soon. Sometime later, Kagami meets with her mother, declaring that she wanted to make a friend. Tomoe insists that she already has Adrien and follows by claiming that friendships can prove disappointing. Reluctantly, she relents and tells Kagami to be home in time for dinner before driving off, allowing her to spend the rest of the afternoon with Marinette.

In "Hearthunter", Tomoe attends André and Audrey Bourgeois' anniversary party with Kagami. She reluctantly allows Kagami and Adrien to help Marinette, and later expresses confusion when they haven't returned.

Season 5[]

In "Multiplication", Tomoe begins working closely with Gabriel when he becomes inactive as Monarch, which is noticed by Adrien. During this time, she and Gabriel invite Adrien and Lila Rossi to one of her facilities, scanning them to be digitized. Later on, Tomoe is akumatized into Ikari Gozen, and appears before Collège Françoise Dupont. Ikari declares that all the old buildings in Paris must be destroyed to make way for a new city and crushes the school with her bokken, jumping away. Marinette and Adrien transform to confront Ikari, who manages to destroy the Arc de Triumph. Cat Noir attempts to use his Cataclysm on her sword; however, she proves to be too fast for him to hit. Once Ladybug manages to catch her sword with her yo-yo, Ikari calls upon the Mouse Miraculous' power of Multiplication, to Ladybug and Cat Noir's horror.

With Multiplication, Ikari splits herself into multiple smaller copies and begins destroying Paris, while also attacking Ladybug and Cat Noir. Ladybug summons a fishing rod with her Lucky Charm and forms a plan, luring Ikari and her clones to the destroyed school. Ikari attempts to strike Ladybug, only for Cat Noir to use the fishing rod and a steel beam to trap her bokken, allowing him to Cataclysm it and de-akumatize her. Ladybug and Cat Noir meet with Tomoe, who claims that the city refused to let her tear up Buttes-Chaumont Park to build a new techno pool. The heroes advise Tomoe to build it elsewhere, and that Paris' monuments are what make it a beautiful city, before asking if she possesses the Mouse Miraculous.

Tomoe searches herself and is unable to find the Miraculous, which Cat Noir determines to be the surprise Monarch prepared for them while he was absent. Ladybug restores the city with her Miraculous Ladybug and grants Tomoe a Magical Charm before leaving with Cat Noir. Tomoe gets into Tatsu and heads back to her office, contacting Gabriel using a smart ring. She declares that their "prototype" was a success, and he remarks that they can move onto the next phase of their plan—revealing that Tomoe was akumatized willingly and is now working with him. Following this, Tomoe and Gabriel successfully unveil their Alliance rings—smart rings created by both their companies—to the public, which proves to be a success.

In "Destruction", which takes place concurrently with "Multiplication", Gabriel engages in a deal with Tomoe sometime after being hit by Cat Noir's Cataclysm and destroying the Miraculous, receiving a spherical device. Using Tomoe's device, he is able to reshape the destroyed Miraculous into Alliance rings, which he begins wearing as Monarch in order to transmit Miraculous powers into any Akumatized villain also wearing an Alliance.

In "Illusion", after taking advantage of Nino Lahiffe's Resistance movement to manipulate his enemies, Gabriel contacts Tomoe. He informs her that he has used fooled Ladybug and Cat Noir into believing that he is transmitting his Miraculous powers through magical lightning, meaning they will never connect his villains' powers to their Alliance rings, to her delight.

In "Perfection", Kagami, while akumatized as Ryukomuri, recalls training alongside her mother and remarks that she was right to warn her about friendships being disappointing. Later, after Kagami is de-akumatized, Tomoe appears in Gabriel's atelier and attacks him with her bokken in response to him endangering her daughter and sending an akuma into her ring. Furious, she threatens to destroy his dream if he goes against their agreement, just as he tried to destroy her dream in the past, adding that Gabriel owes everything to her; reluctantly, Gabriel agrees.

In "Protection", Tomoe and Gabriel meet in the former's mansion. Tomoe inquires why Gabriel wants to move up the date of their annual Diamonds Dance, and rages at him for his disrespect when he attempts to lie to her. Gabriel relents, admitting he wants to change the date as he doesn't have much time left, revealing his worsening Cataclysm injury. Gabriel and Tomoe then overhear Adrien and Kagami talking in the kitchen, and mistakenly believe that they are talking about their romance, expressing satisfaction that their children have fallen in love as they planned. However, when they realize that Adrien is really planning a date between himself and Marinette, Tomoe declares that their plans are falling apart.

The two argue, blaming each other for Kagami and Adrien's relationship failing, ending with Tomoe ordering Gabriel to control his son so that Kagami cannot encourage his love for Marinette. She permits the date of the Diamond Dance to be moved up, and warns Gabriel that, if he cannot get the Miraculous, their children's situation must be resolved before his death. Tomoe leaves with Kagami, and, while driving away, advises her daughter to continue pursuing her feelings for Adrien, despite his feelings for Marinette. This, along with Lila's manipulations, later results in Kagami being akumatized into Riposte Prime by Monarch.

In "Emotion", Tomoe trains with Kagami, ending in the latter's defeat and Tomoe ordering her to get ready for the Diamonds Dance. At the dance, Tomoe greets Gabriel, expressing annoyance that Adrien is late, as he and Kagami are to be the dance's king and queen. "Adrien" then arrives and greets her and Kagami; shortly afterwards, she witnesses Amelie Graham de Vanily burst into the dance and accuse Gabriel of doing nothing to help her find her son Félix, before being escorted out. Tomoe enters the dance with Gabriel and socializes with the other guests, observing Kagami and Félix stepping up to dance, which is disrupted by the arrival of Marinette.

Félix soon reveals his identity and transforms into the villain Argos, unleashing the Sentimonster Red Moon upon Tomoe and the other guests. Tomoe attempts to flee with Kagami after Argos uses his power to snap away Gabriel and the other partygoers, only to be snapped away as well; Argos declaring to Kagami afterwards that she is now truly free. Like the other citizens of Paris, Tomoe is ultimately returned after Argos undoes his actions and destroys Red Moon.

Personality[]

Tomoe is an austere and closed-off person. Similar to how Gabriel Agreste is with his son, she is very strict with her daughter, Kagami, not allowing her to have contact with anyone but herself, or participate in anything she has not already approved; even remarking that Gabriel is too permissive with Adrien. Due to her controlling nature, she reacts harshly when her orders are disobeyed, or if she thinks her daughter or others aren't living up to her standards. She is also disapproving of friendship, believing that forming bonds with others can lead to disappointment.

However, despite these qualities, she is shown to be capable of changing her ways, being convinced to allow her daughter to make a friend and seemingly giving her more freedom afterward. She can also be wise and informative, advising Gabriel not to give in to his fears in "Backwarder".

As Ikari Gozen, Tomoe's negative traits are amplified, and she becomes even more belligerent and wrathful, seeking to punish Kagami for her disobedience by keeping her imprisoned. She retains complete confidence in her abilities as a swordswoman, proclaiming herself to be "as elusive as the wind, as powerful as the flood, as swift as lightning" during her battle with Ladybug and Cat Noir. When she is re-Akumatized, she becomes even more destructive, deliberately destroying many of Paris' buildings and landmarks.

Powers and Abilities[]

Tomoe is one of the most skilled fencers in the world, having at one point been a world champion, and easily surpassing her daughter's abilities. Despite her blindness, she is easily able to navigate the world around her and possesses heightened senses, able to read the emotions of those nearby. She seems to be a capable businesswoman, engaging in various deals with Gabriel Agreste throughout the series.

As Ikari Gozen, she wields a gigantic sword and superhuman strength, able to easily knock aside cars and buildings. Despite her size, she is rather nimble and can leap long distances. If she swallows someone or something, they become trapped inside of her mechanical body, which takes the form of a car interior with seat belts she can control and use to restrain captured victims. As a result of her Akumatization, her sight is also restored. In "Multiplication", she is given the Mouse Miraculous' power of Multiplication by her Alliance ring, using it to split herself into six identical copies, all possessing the same powers that she does.

Trivia[]

  • In Japanese, the name Tomoe means "earth", "death" and/or "blessing". It also references Tomoe Gozen, a famous female samurai (and Miraculous holder), whom Tomoe herself admires.
    • Her villain name, Ikari Gozen, also alludes to Tomoe Gozen, and translates to "Lady Fury" or "Lady of Fury".
    • Her surname, Tsurugi, is a type of Japanese sword, referencing her fencing abilities.
  • Judging by the angry response Tomoe received after Gabriel endangered Kagami in "Perfection", it is possible that her daughter's previous akumatizations were given under Tomoe's permission.
  • In "Riposte", it is stated that Kagami has a grandfather, but it is unknown if he is Tomoe's father or father-in-law.
  • Before being formally introduced in Season 3, Tomoe made an unseen cameo appearance in "Riposte", as Kagami leaves her a voice message after failing to make it into Armand D'Argencourt's fencing team. She also (presumably) arrives to pick Kagami up at the end of the episode.
