The unnamed Protagonist of the Poppy Playtime indie horror game is a former employee at Playtime CO. that was involved in the Bigger Bodies Initiative, assisting in turning hundreds of children into monstrous toys.
The Protagonist didn't show up to work on the day of the Hour of Joy (either they were fired before then, took a vacation, or got sick), resulting in them being one of the few Playtime employees that came out alive and weren't slaughtered. 10 years later, the Protagonist returns to the toy factory to atone for their actions and find out what happened to their former co-workers.
Biography[]
The Protagonist was one of the employees at Playtime CO. that knew about the Bigger Bodies Initiative. They played an unknown role in it, assisting in turning children into monstrous toys that worked on Playtime's payroll. For unknown reasons, the Protagonist didn't appear on August 8th, 1995, when the Prototype started a massive rebellion that ended with the slaughter of all Playtime CO. employees, guilty or innocent. Ten years later, the Protagonist is called into the Playtime CO. factory to "find the flower", accepting the offer to atone for their villainous deeds and rescue their co-workers, unaware they're all dead.
Appearance[]
The Protagonist's appearance is never seen in the game, but their model is a yellow toy/mannequin. However, this is clearly a placeholder and not what they actually look like.
Personality[]
There is not much information about the Protagonist, but the fact that they took part in experiments and solved all the puzzles shows that they are intelligent. Likewise, the fact that they continue to search for their co-workers at the risk of all danger shows that they are a very determined person. Chapter 3 reveals they feel deeply remorseful for the actions they've done, CatNap claiming "guilt haunts [them]" and a VHS tape saying the Protagonist returned due to "their conscience finally getting the better of [them]". It's implied they were traumatized by Huggy Wuggy coming to life in Chapter 1, as hallucinations of him appear twice in Chapter 3, once as a "living" entity.
Powers/Abilities[]
- GrabPack: The Protagonist's main tool. It allows them to perform a variety of tasks that normally cannot be done by humans:
- Extended Reach & Enhanced Versatility: The Blue, Red, Green, & Purple Hands, being modeled after open palms, can be fired at objects by the pull of a trigger. These can grip objects & interact with them. The Blue & Red Hands (the latter hand being ripped off by Mommy Long Legs) are also able to activate scanners to open doors.
- Limited Electrokinesis: The GrabPack's cables are electrically conductive, while the Green Hand can store electricity for up to 10 seconds maximum & transfer it from a source to a specialized receiver, which also holds said electricity for 10 seconds. The Green Hand can also be used offensively to send fatal shocks to targets (which is probably discouraged to do on other employees), as seen when the Protagonist passed the current of an overcharged Green Hand to CatNap (which sent the latter's Red Smoke on fire) as a last attack.
- One notable weakness, however, is that the electroconductivity of the GrabPack can backfire on inexperienced or unlucky users, as was the case with Theodore Grambell (who was electrocuted before his transformation into a Toy) with the Green Hand, although we have yet to see any cable-induced casualties, though the effects are likely similar to what happened to Theo.
- The video tape showcasing the Green Hand also says that the specialized receivers that receive electricity from a Green Hand also have a timer of 10 seconds, possibly causing fatal accidents for, yet again, inexperienced or unlucky users.

- Advanced Propulsion: The Purple Hand has the ability to propel the user forward in the direction of any booster of the same color when fired upon.
- Shooting Flares: The Orange Hand, being modeled like a finger gun, has the ability to shoot flares that dispel illusory CatNaps and scare off the Mini Smiling Critters.
- This means, however, that it cannot be used conventionally like the other GrabPack Hands.
- Hand Swappage: The GrabPack's experimental successor, the GrabPack 2.0, can swap any Hand on the right cannon (and possibly the left one as well) for other Hands.
- Air Jets: The GrabPack 2.0 is also outfitted with experimental air jets that break long falls, but these cannot be used for flight.
- Mechanical Expertise: The Protagonist is capable of mastering complex technology like both iterations of the GrabPack & their hands in mere moments after 10 years without using them.
- Extreme Intelligence & Reflexes: The Protagonist is capable of completing all the Game Station's games (which Mommy Long Legs rigged against them) & making snap decisions & actions under extreme duress, which usually succeed. They are also (canonically) adept at understanding clues from VHS Tapes in one go.
- Enhanced Dexterity & Strength: The Protagonist is capable of running away from danger & to specific spots quickly even while wearing the GrabPack, which looks a bit heavy, especially the GrabPack 2.0. They're also capable of keeping said speed even while pulling heavy objects.
Trivia[]
- Fans commonly speculate that the Protagonist is the unnamed Head of Security.
- it is also theorized by some that the Protagonist is actually the Head of Production, making them important enough for the toys to know of their existence, and for them to have conditioned or even created some of the experiments themselves.
- Another theory is that he is the disgruntled employee, Rich.
- The numerous warnings around the Playtime CO. premises about the ways employees can die with a GrabPack foreshadow how the Protagonist kills some of the Toys.
- Keeping any part of yourself or your GrabPack away from heavy machinery to avoid dismemberment: Mommy Long Legs accidentally sticks her hand inside a shredder while chasing the Protagonist before getting her arm and lower abdomen shredded by it.
- Not overcharging your Green Hand to avoid electrocution (and to an extent, being cautious with the Green Hand in general): The Protagonist breaks this rule, overcharging their Green Hand & then passing the current to CatNap in the final battle, which lights the latter's Red Smoke ablaze. That said, the Protagonist is not the one to kill CatNap, the latter being slaughtered by the Prototype.
- Interestingly enough, CatNap - as Theodore - already had a history with the Green Hand, as his inexperience with it was what got him electrocuted and then turned into a Toy by the workers.
