The One Ring, also known simply as the Ring, was a ring forged by the dark lord Sauron, who wishes to dominate all of Middle-earth. It was destroyed when Frodo Baggins returned it to Mount Doom where it was forged and dropped it into the lava.
The Ring appears in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and his The Lord of the Rings trilogy in all three books: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King.
Powers and abilities[]
It has the ability to exert influence over those who wear it and to corrupt their hearts and minds. It also has the ability to partially shift the wearer out of the physical realm, making them appear invisible to many beings, but with the opposite effect of making the wearer even more visible to other beings like Ringwraiths. While wearing it, the Ring does not mask other physical characteristics like scent or the sound of breathing, as Smaug was able to detect Bilbo Baggins when he had infiltrated Smaug's treasure horde.
Poem[]
Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
