GIVE YOURSELF TO US.
~ A sentence often repeated by the Entity.
You cannot escape this. This is not the end. I will come back. And you will play with us. I will stitch you two back together, so I can rip you apart all over again!
~ The Entity in the first trailer for Mr Hopp's Playhouse 3.

The Entity, also known as the Dark Lord, is the overarching antagonist of the Mr. Hopp's Playhouse indie horror game series.

He is a powerful deity who once a resident of the celestial realm known as the Above, he held the esteemed title of the Guardian of Hope. However, his actions and moral decay resulted in his banishment from his heavenly abode, transforming him into a malevolent and dark ruler over the dark and sinister realm of the Underworld. In this infernal domain, he became the very embodiment of evil and sin, spreading terror and despair among those unfortunates enough to cross his path. In order to further his nefarious agenda, he crafted three devoted minions, Mr. Hopp, Miss Bo, and Mr. Stripes. These sinister underlings aided their master in his insidious mission to harvest souls and perpetuate fear. However, their actions inevitably brought them into direct conflict with Ruby and Esther, his archenemies.

Before the third game, he was voiced by the series' creator, Moonbit, in the third game, he was voiced by an uncredited Lewis MacLeod, who also played Protoboy, General Yakitori, Bjorn Bjornson and Bjornbot, among other villains in Robotboy, Sebulba in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, and Zaid in Horizon: Zero Dawn.

Appearance[]

The Entity is an immense and enigmatic deity, shrouded in a vast expanse of darkness. Its presence is marked by the eerie glow of dark purple light, which emanates from its form, and its piercing yellow eyes, mirroring those of its subordinate creatures, especially when they assume their monstrous appearances. The Entity's head bears a striking resemblance to that of a Satan-like entity, further adding to its mysterious and formidable nature.

Similar to almost all the monsters present within the game, the Entity exhibits the remarkable capability to alter its physical appearance, effortlessly transforming into a myriad of terrifying and monstrous beings.

In the third game, his overall physical appearance undergoes a noticeable transformation, with his facial features bearing a striking resemblance to that of a goat.

As the Amalgamation, he is significantly bigger than the individual entities that make it up, and it even surpasses its own size. Its appearance resembles that of a hydra, with multiple heads comprised of Mr. Hopp, Mr. Stripes, and Miss Bo. Each of these heads possesses menacing sharp teeth and the haunting eyes characteristic of the Entity.

Personality[]

The Entity is depicted as an extremely malevolent being with a strong desire to corrupt and inflict as much chaos and unhappiness as possible. This malevolence was the very reason why he was originally banished from the celestial realm known as the Above. Additionally, the Entity possesses a cunning ability to manipulate others, as he successfully convinces Isabelle to align herself with him by tempting her with promises of unimaginable luxuries and comforts. Not only that, but he briefly manages to manipulate Ruby, turning her against her own grandmother, showcasing his ability to deceive and manipulate even the closest of relationships. Furthermore, the Entity appears to have little regard for his minions, displaying a lack of concern for their well-being, and he is highly intolerant of any form of failure from them.

The Entity is incredibly determined and unyielding in his quest to capture Esther, even going so far as to manipulate her dreams in order to weaken her resolve and convince her to join forces with Isabelle. As time goes on, his persistence only intensifies, leading him to grow increasingly agitated and fixated on eliminating Esther. In a desperate attempt to achieve his goal, he even resorts to kidnapping her friends with the intention of killing them. In the true ending, the Entity goes to extreme lengths by transforming into the Amalgamation, a monstrous form, to ensure Esther's demise once and for all. However, his unwavering persistence also causes him to act recklessly at times, leading him to underestimate the capabilities of his targets.

The Entity possesses an intense vengeful nature, choosing to exact revenge on Esther's family as a means of retaliation after she successfully defeated and imprisoned him. Even though he embodied a malevolent presence, The Entity displayed characteristics indicative of both high-functioning and low-functioning psychopathy. Devoid of any trace of guilt, empathy, or remorse, he possessed remarkable intellect and exuded a faint aura of charisma, evident in his interactions with the Ruby. Additionally, this malevolent being exhibits sadistic tendencies and displays a somewhat juvenile mindset, treating the anguish he inflicts on others as mere amusement. The presence of his three most powerful followers inhabiting toys serves as additional evidence of his impulsive disposition.

Biography[]

Past[]

The Entity, once known as the Guardian of Hope, faced a downfall as a result of its misdeeds and corrupt nature. Consequently, it was forcefully expelled from the heavenly realm, known as the Above, and condemned to reside within the dark and treacherous depths of the Underworld. Fueled by its malevolent intentions, the Entity embarked on a sinister path, seeking to harvest the precious souls of the living. These souls would be manipulated and tainted, serving as a source of sustenance for the Entity. Moreover, in a cunning act of thievery, the Entity cunningly snatched the six medallions responsible for maintaining equilibrium between the realms. With these medallions in its possession, the Entity conjured three diabolical companions named Mr. Hopp, Miss Bo, and Mr. Stripes. These abominable creations were designed to assist the Entity in its twisted mission of harvesting and corrupting souls.

As a consequence of her malevolent actions, Isabelle faced the grim fate of execution for her alleged involvement in witchcraft. The punishment prescribed for her was nothing short of horrific - being burned alive. However, just as the flames were about to consume her, the Entity intervened, "saving" her from the clutches of death. In a transformative twist, the Entity bestowed upon Isabelle a semblance of its own existence, effectively turning her into a being akin to itself. Furthermore, the Entity commanded its loyal servants to infuse Isabelle's once-inanimate toys with their otherworldly presence, thus merging her physical form with their ethereal essence. During one of his bountiful harvests, the protagonist unexpectedly encountered a young girl named Isabelle, who was immersed in turmoil and harbored an intense animosity within her heart. The enigmatic Entity, who possessed an uncanny ability to grant unimaginable comforts and opulence, extended an enticing offer to Isabelle. In exchange for her allegiance, the Entity promised her a life filled with unimaginable luxuries and indulgences. Intrigued by the allure of this proposition, Isabelle willingly accepted the Entity's proposal. To fulfill his end of the bargain, the Entity bestowed upon her a mystical artifact known as the Six, which Isabelle seemingly utilized for sinister purposes, including the heinous act of murdering her own mother.

The Entity persisted in its terrifying rule, targeting the vulnerable and exploiting their fears, particularly through its possession of Mr. Hopp. However, its focus shifted when it began tormenting a pregnant woman named Faith, invading her dreams and subjecting her to unimaginable horrors. This relentless onslaught only grew more intense when Faith gave birth to her daughter, Esther, as the Entity became fixated on the remarkable purity and innocence that radiated from Esther's very soul.

Mr. Hopp's Playhouse 2[]

Not content with merely inflicting psychological anguish upon Esther, the Entity employed its minions to relentlessly wear down her resolve, resorting to extreme measures such as forcibly dragging Esther's closest friends and acquaintances into the dreaded Underworld. This sinister act not only caused immense distress to those entangled in the Entity's clutches but also served as a malicious ploy to coerce Esther into joining its malevolent cause. As if the Entity's wicked machinations were not enough, Isabelle, under the guise of an innocent orphan, engaged in a ritualistic ceremony that seemed to be a direct summons to the very essence of the Entity itself. This nefarious conduct not only implicated Isabelle in the Entity's malefic plans but also hinted at the dark depths of its power and influence over those unfortunate enough to cross its path.

In the Bad Ending, the Entity materializes in its physical form and relentlessly pursues Esther, commanding her to engage in a twisted game. Despite her valiant attempts to evade the Entity's clutches, Esther ultimately succumbs to its grasp, resulting in her memories being seemingly wiped clean. Strangely, even after enduring such harrowing experiences, Esther inexplicably chooses to bring Mr. Hopp along with her into the unknown.

In the Good Ending, the Entity, determined to ensure his reign of darkness prevails, undertakes a perilous endeavor. He merges his formidable essence with his loyal servants, melding them into an awe-inspiring, colossal being. Just as this formidable transformation takes place, Esther, accompanied by the Six, valiantly arrives on the scene, steadfastly resisting the Entity's relentless attempts to shatter her resolve once more. Despite the Entity's cunning efforts, his malevolent intentions ultimately crumble into defeat, resulting in his banishment alongside his faithful minions to the foreboding depths of the Underworld. It appears as though their imprisonment shall endure indefinitely... that is, until the relentless march of time gradually erodes Esther's unwavering strength, leaving her susceptible to the Entity's sinister machinations once more.

Between Mr. Hopp's Playhouse 2 and Mr. Hopp's Playhouse 1[]

As Esther reaches the later stages of her life, she becomes unable to prevent the return of the Entity. This malevolent force reclaims the Six and manipulates Esther, likely being the underlying cause of her deteriorating mental state. The Entity then compels Esther to pass on Mr. Hopp to her granddaughter Ruby, thus continuing its vengeful plot against Esther's entire family. These events ultimately set the stage for the haunting tale that unfolds in the original Mr. Hopp's Playhouse.

Once Esther passed away, the Entity cruelly imprisoned her soul within the depths of the Underworld, taking its malevolence a step further by constructing a meticulous replica of her beloved home as a constant and haunting symbol of her eternal captivity, ensuring that liberation would forever remain an unattainable dream.

Mr. Hopps Playhouse 3[]

Six months have passed since the events of the initial game, and now the Entity has devised a new plan. Its latest move is to send Mr. Hopp, a sinister character, to retrieve Ruby and bring her to the Underworld. However, Ruby manages to escape with Esther's help. Not one to give up easily, the Entity commands Isabelle to halt their progress. Despite facing obstacles, Esther and Ruby manage to overcome the challenges posed by the Jester. However, their triumph is short-lived as the Entity captures Ruby and takes her to its domain. In an attempt to manipulate Ruby, the Entity tries to convince her that Esther is the true antagonistic force, presenting itself as a mere victim. Initially skeptical, Ruby ultimately succumbs to the Entity's persuasion when it questions Esther's intentions in giving her Mr. Hopp, raising doubts about her true feelings for Ruby.

Following the unsuccessful attempts of the Three Curses to eliminate Esther, the Entity determines that he must personally intervene. As Esther approaches, the Entity commands shadowy vines to immobilize her, seizing the opportunity to disclose that Ruby has willingly pledged allegiance to him. Furthermore, he discloses that he has bestowed upon her the final fragment of the Six, a significant source of power. With a fierce determination, the Entity charges his mouth orbs, preparing to deliver a fatal blow and ultimately vanquish Esther forever.

The Entity's ultimate fate depends on the ending obtained:

Bad Ending[]

In the event that not all of the precious gems have been gathered during the course of the game, the Entity, a malevolent force, executes Esther while Ruby is simultaneously transported back to her place of residence through the mystical power of her medallion.

Good Ending[]

In the climactic moment of the game, when every single gem has been successfully gathered, Ruby unexpectedly switches sides and betrays the Entity. In a surprising twist, she hurls her precious medallion directly at Esther, the Entity's right-hand person. However, this act of defiance does not go unnoticed or unpunished. The furious Entity retaliates, launching a vicious attack on Ruby, causing her severe injuries and rendering her unconscious.

As he readies himself to put an end to Esther's life once and for all, she taps into the incredible power of the Six, elevating herself to a higher plane of existence. This triggers a monumental clash between Esther and the Entity, unleashing an intense and relentless battle that will ultimately result in the permanent demise of the Entity.

The Entity: Only your safety, young Ruby, as well as my own from that grandmother of yours.
Ruby: Nana Esther? But she protects me.
The Entity: Young Ruby, she is not what she seems. Some time ago, she stole my medallions and imprisoned me here.
Ruby: Because you're evil. She saved us!
The Entity: We are cursed, forsaken, not evil... and this curse is a burden we must take to help unfortunate souls cross over to the other side. The Six make our suffering more bearable, they belong to me and Esther is nothing more than a malicious thief. She will hurt you too, young Ruby.
Ruby: I don't believe you, you're lying!
The Entity: Is that so? Tell me, if she cared for you so deeply, why would she give you a toy that has taken everything from you? Your parents are gone, your friends have abandoned you and now you're all the way down here in this dark abyss.

Esther: Ruby, I would have never given Mr. Hopp to you if I could have helped it... they took control of me... I'm so sorry that I couldn't protect you.

The Entity: Enough of this. You will fall here, Esther. (The Entity charges his mouth orbs as Ruby is teleported back to her room by her medallion.)

Esther: Ruby! (Esther uses her medallions to destroy the vines holding her captive before rushing to Ruby.) Ruby, can you hear me?! Say something!
The Entity: Foolish. That compassion you scared ones insist on carrying is what makes you so weak. You both will die here. (Esther suddenly screams as a light covers her. The Entity turns away and his eyes widen as Esther has ascended.)

Trivia[]

  • The Entity can be seen as a parallel to Satan within the series, as they both possess the common characteristic of once being fallen entities before being banished to their own hellish dimensions, where they now reign as powerful rulers and personify evil itself.
  • There is a strong suspicion that the Entity played a significant role in the execution of Isabelle by burning her at the stake. This suspicion arises from the belief that the Entity manipulated Isabelle, coercing her into carrying out wicked acts, including the murder of her own mother. It is also suggest that the Entity could potentially be held responsible for the gradual decline in Esther's mental well-being and deteriorating physical health.
  • The gender of the Entity remains uncertain and open to interpretation. In the second game, the Entity is referred to as an "it" in a note, while in the third game, the Totems explicitly identify the Entity as a male, even going as far as addressing him as "the Dark Lord".
