Springtrap is a supporting antagonist in the Five Nights at Freddy's: Fazbear Frights book series, based on William Afton's undead form by the same name. He's the main antagonist of the stories "In the Flesh" and "What We Found".
Story[]
In the Flesh[]
Springtrap is the main antagonist of Springtrap's Revenge, an in-universe virtual reality videogame which hasn't yet been released. Matt, the game's main developer, studied real life serial killer's stories to make Springtrap look as scary and unsettling as possible, using him as a way to vent the ragehe feels due to all his previous relationships failing. While testing the game, Matt gets repeatedly jumpscared by Springtrap. Furious for being beaten by his own creation, Matt takes a "revenge" on Springtrap by leaving the game open the whole night, forcing Springtrap to roam for the virtual maze without no one to kill, and making so that each second which passes is perceived by Springtrap thousands of hours. When Matt comes back to his studio the following day, he discovers that Springtrap, left without anybody to attack, decided to spawn a stronger copy of himself. Said copy killed the original Springtrap and spawned another copy, with the cycle continuing. However, by the time Matt reached the office, no copy of Springtrap can be found and the files associated with him appear to have been corrupted. Matt becomes desperate, since the the game is due to release in just two weeks, and, at the end, decides to create a new Springtrap AI to replace the old one. Throught the following days, Matt starts to experience nausea, gain weight and crave meat to an unhealthy extent. At first, Matt doesn't think much of it, but as his health progressively worsens, he starts thinking there may be something more. Coming back home after a failed date with a girl named Emma, Matt realizes there's something inside him. He presses on his stomach, trying to make it leave it through his mouth, but when that fails, he grabs a kitchen knife and cuts his belly, making a more organic version of Springtrap come out of it. Before dying from blood loss, Matt hears the bunny call him "Daddy". Later, the developer's body and a piece of green fur belonging to Springtrap are found by Jason, Matt's roomate, who immediately calls the police. It is unknown what happened to the organic Springtrap
What We Found[]
After being found by the crew of "Fazbear's Fright" (a horror attraction based on the pizzera chain owned by Fazbear Entertainment), Springtrap is taken to the attraction and hooked up to a wall; the night he's brought in, Hudson, who works Fazbear's Fright as a nighttime security guard, sees something similar to flesh inside the animatronic rabbit as he walks past him, and decides to touch it to understand what it really is; immediately thereafter, he starts experiencing memories from his past as hallucinations, the first of which is the voice of his algebra teacher from high school calling him stupid. Sweeping the building, he hears the statues of the animatronics singing and is slammed against his desk by his abusive stepfather Lewis, who died a long time ago. After waking up and realising he slammed his head against a arcade machine, Hudson goes to check on Springtrap, but the robot is missing. Wanting to wash his blood-covered hands, he runs to the bathroom, where he's dragged to the toilet by an unseen force, and his head is flushed inside the toilet. Hudson once again wakes up from the hallucinatory state he's in and realises the toilet is dry. Suddenly, Springtrap pokes his head from the vents before retreating, and Hudson chases him. After an encounter with a Chica the Chicken animatronic and another Lewis hallucination, Hudson faces Springtrap once again. Springtrap uses Lewis' voice to taunt Hudson, who then charges at the animatronic with a knife; however, he's eventually overpowered, and gets stabbed himself, in the same spot in which he was stabbed by Lewis years ago. With his right hand also suddenly bloodied, although only his left one was stabbed, Hudson has two main goals: stop the bleeding and leave Fazbear's Fright. Remembering that the gift shop can bring him both, Hudson goes there, but when he's close to Pirate's Cove, Springtrap shows up behind the curtain and attakc him with Foxy the Pirate's arm. Hudson begins running, but sees Springtrap still hooked up to the wall, much to his confusion; he then reaches the gift shop, wherehe wraps a large amount of towels around his arm. He then smells the type of tobacco Lewis always smoked, and ends up being picked up and thrown across the dining room, landing against the wall with a crack. Remembering the fire that killed Lewis started in the kitchen, Hudson runs there, and it's finally revealed that it was Hudson himself who had burnt down the house where Lewis and Hudson's mother lived, killing them both. Hudson hides in the oven, but some unknown force turns it on the as the door shuts, and Hudson is cremated alive. Barry and Duane, Hudson's friends, return the next day, and come across Springtrap, still hooked up against the wall.
Trivia[]
- It is speculated Springtrap from "In the Flesh" is a parallel to Glitchtrap from Five Nights at Freddy's: Help Wanted, since both of them use William Afton's appearance, are trapped inside a game, and ends up escaping into the real world after causing the brutal death of one of a game developer (Matt in the books, Jeremy in the games).
- In the introduction segment of Five Nights at Freddy's VR: Help Wanted, HandUnit tells the player that Fazbear Entertainment is not responsible for "real world manifestation of digital characters", leading some fans to believe he was referring to the events of "In the Flesh"., assuming the short story is in the same continuity as the games.
- Interestingly enough, the "In the Flesh" version of Springtrap shares some similarities with the one drawn in the last page of The Freddy Files: Updated Edition, such as the green eyes, the absence of a dead body inside and his glitchy nature, implying they could be the same character. Five Nights at Freddy's: The Ultimate Guide confirmed this was indeed the case, with the same picture appearing in the page talking about "In the Flesh".
- If one counts its manifestation in Matt's stomach as such, this version of Springtrap is the only villain in the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise who is a rapist.
- Some fans believe that "What We Found" proves William Afton is behind the Phantom animatronics, since in the short story he's seemingly able to create hallucinations.
- This anomaly could possibly be Glichtrap which would prove that William is indeed Malhare.
