~ Duke on Smudger's fate |
Smudger is a minor antagonist from Thomas & Friends, serving as the main antagonist of the episode “Granpuff”. He is an ill-behaved steam engine who formerly worked on the defunct Mid-Sodor Railway.
Biography[]
Smudger arrived on the Mid-Sodor Railway sometime after Duke. He was a rude engine with a habit of showing off. Despite Duke’s warnings, Smudger would always shrug off any spills. After enough repeat offenses, the manager took away his wheels and turned him into a generator. He remained behind the shed unable to move until the railway’s closure. What happened to him after Duke was rediscovered is unknown.
Personality[]
Smudger is an immature and petulant engine. While he is not a bully like most of the series’ other antagonists, he is confrontational and insults those who attempt to help him.

Trivia[]
- Smudger is the only engine or road vehicle introduced between the first and fourth series to not receive a nameboard during the intermissions. The only other non-human characters introduced between these times without nameboards were the rolling stock.
- Smudger is the first engine in the television series not created by Wilbert Awdry. However, his role was based on that of Stanley from Duke the Lost Engine.
- In the book, the reason for his constant derailments was that he was an American engine who was not regauged properly when he was brought to England. Because Smudger’s model was just a repainted Rheneas, this was omitted from the adaptation.
- Smudger's Ertl prototype and a promotional artwork image have Rheneas' face.
