Sir Benedict Cumbersnatch, initially known as the Mysterious Voice, is the main antagonist of Sunset Paradise, a spin-off of the web series SMG4.

He is specifically the overarching antagonist of the first six episodes, the villainous main protagonist of Episode 7 and the main antagonist of the last three episodes.

He was a powerful monster trapped in the form of an anthropomorphic egg who served as a crime lord controlling the criminal underworld of Port Aurora. He was the boss of Whisk, the Spud Buds, and the Funky Fource, and the archenemy of Auri Bori, as well as the killer of his grandfather Aloysius Bori, who transformed him into an egg in the first place.

Appearance[]

Benedict currently takes the form of a white egg wearing a yellow-and-red fez, with a crudely drawn face that shifts between expressions. He is commonly carried by Goonie 1 with a frying pan with a bunny sticker on its front.

His true form is that of a tall, pale white humanoid with black eyeballs and red irises, though still wearing his aformentioned fez.

Personality[]

While he may display a polite, reasonable and understanding side, Benedict was a malicious, vicious, cruel, rude, selfish, self-centered, and ruthless person. He was very ruthless to the point of not caring about when he or his subordinates hurt even children to further and/or accomplish his goals like his current objective to kill Auri, a kid who pretends to be a deputy sheriff and befriends Meggy, to prevent him from interfering with sabotaging the Phoenix Festival.

He abused his underlings as seen in Episode 1 when he was scolding the Spud Buds for their failed attempt to kill Auri, he made Duke punch Mash for exposing the secret of Auri getting away. He then choked Yam telling him that if they didn’t kill Auri, then he would’ve killed them all. Benedict had a bit of a dark sense of humor, as when he congratulated Mash when he said they would kill Meggy along with Auri. He also hated people calling or assuming him an egg.

Despite seeming brave and intimidating, he is also incredibly cowardly, as when he breathes in Whisk’s fear gas and hallucinates Auri as Aloysius, he immediately panicks and kills himself to escape arrest, and when he encounters Aloysius in the in between, he is once again horrified.

While he was inherently malevolent, the same could not be said for the Goonie his screen is attached to. It seems he is a nice fellow who wishes to be polite, such as when he quietly closed the door when leaving the room and when he waved at Whisk on a rooftop, only for Benedict to always force him to change his approach, sometimes to the brute's sadness.

History[]

Background[]

Not much is known about Benedict's past, other than the fact that he found out about the existence of the Phoenix Egg and somehow discovered that it could make someone immortal and planned on harvesting the egg's power to achieve eternal life and start an eternity-lasting criminal empire.

Sometime after arriving, Benedict fought Aloysius Bori in the past. While he successfully killed him, Aloysius, in his last moments, cursed him to transform into an egg. Prior to Meggy Spletzer's arrival at Port Aurora, Benedict would recruit the Spud Buds, Whisk, the Funky Fource, and two Goonies as his minions, plotting to regain Aloysius' ashes during the Phoenix Festival to restore his former body.

Sunset Paradise[]

Benedict is initially seen at at the end of the pilot, meeting up with the Spuds Buds via a television screen attached to Goonie 1. He berates the Spud Buds, threatening to kill them if they don't kill Aloysius' grandson Auri, as well as the recently arrived Meggy. He later appears in the third episode, where he orders Whisk to keep a low profile until the day of the Phoenix Festival.

Benedict finally appears in physical form at the end of the sixth episode, where he and his minions ambush Meggy and Auri at the latter's house. There, he explains his backstory and motives, before encaging them in a prison cell, and planting a bomb in the house before they leave. The bomb detonates, leaving Meggy and Auri's fates unknown as Benedict and the others escape to parts unknown.

In SUNSET PARADISE - EP 7: What Comes Next., Continuing from where the previous episode left off, Sir Benedict Cumbersnatch told the legend of the phoenix.

Then Benedict confronted the mayor because he is supposed to hand over the sheriff star. The mayor tried to shake off the 11 crooks by pretending not to have the star, but Whisk unbuttoned the star from the mayor. The mayor tried to call the Funky Force for help, but the 4 villains revealed their true nature to the mayor.

The next day, the crooks tried to get to the Phoenix Egg at the Borealis Lighthouse, but the tower is guarded by a barrier (and a guardsman) around the tower that only pure hearts could penetrate. After a brief montage of Benedict and his subsidiaries doing deeds at Port Aurora (more so bad than good), Benedict with a heart remaining impure manages to get through by utilizing innocent children as breakthroughs to penetrate the shield.

The guardsman puts up a fight with his harpoon gun, but he could not stop Benedict and his Goonies. Benedict then started preparations before restoring his stolen property and then entered the room of the Phoenix Egg, putting Port Aurora in fear and rife with anarchy. Afterwards, Benedict prohibits all visits to his new base of the Borealis Lighthouse and cancel any Phoenix Festival festivities, establishing the Spud Buds as "law enforcement" in order to cause more chaos.

In SUNSET PARADISE - EP 8: Mad Meggy, Benedict is seen at the beginning of the episode sitting in a throne being made by the Goonies to harness the power of the Phoenix Egg and regain his true form, during which, he makes an announcement that visits to the Borealis Lighthouse are prohibited and all celebrations of the Phoenix Festival are cancelled, and anyone breaking these "rules" will be dealt with by the Spud Buds.

He is later mentioned by Whisk when she asks a Goonie if Benedict forgot to give them brains when he genetically engineering them. He’s also mentioned again several times by Mayora Bora when Auri and Meggy are freeing him. While Benedict doesn’t appear afterwards, he is indirectly responsible for the murder of Mayora Bora due to the fact that he commands the Funky Fource.

In SUNSET PARADISE - EP 9: All Fall Down, Benedict first shows up at the beginning after Meggy and Auri get into the Borealis Lighthouse using his Screen to communicate with them at the top of the Lighthouse and also says he sent his Goonies to kill them. Meggy then asks if he wanted them to survive the explosion, to which Benedict responds that he was hoping for it and that he and Aloysius Bori fought for an hour before he killed the latter. Auri then asks why he won’t just come down to the first floor of the Lighthouse and fight them himself, to which he responds that he is "a little low on hands", but if they’re still alive by the time he’s regained his true form, he’d go down there and kill them himself and then commands his Goonies to kill them.

After Meggy and Auri take down the first floor of Goonies, Benedict sadistically laughs and states that the two maybe might not make the night so boring. Afterwards, Benedict asks one of his Goonies to get his things ready and that they’ll be having guests. Benedict is later after Auri and Meggy find the Lighthouse Keeper tied up, to which Auri is forcefully taken to the top of the Lighthouse by Benedict, after which the Lighthouse Keeper explains that if the Phoenix Egg isn’t allowed to hatch in the open that death and ruin would come to Port Aurora for 100 Years. After the Lighthouse Keeper says this, Benedict explains to Auri that 100 years ago he was only looking for the Phoenix Egg so he could steal its power and become immortal, but Aloysius came and cursed him into his egg-shaped form, he then says that he not only had brains, but incredible strength and that gangs would fall before him and that he was on the verge of having a criminal empire that would last an eternity.

Benedict then begins monologuing about how when the Phoenix Egg hatches, he will steal its power, regain his true form, and have his criminal empire would rise from the ashes. Afterwards, Meggy appears and tells Benedict that she’s "gonna make a few ashes of her own" and uses the Lighthouse Keeper’s harpoon gun to shoot a lantern and knock it into a barrel of lamp oil, causing an explosion that incapacitates all the Goonies on the roof. After this, Benedict is angered by this and claims he spent an afternoon training them, to which Auri replies that at least he’ll have something to do before the next Phoenix Festival and draws his spear.

He then throws it at Benedict’s throne and retrieves the Phoenix Egg and escapes to the top of the Lighthouse, during which he briefly admires the aurora borealis, but this admiring is cut short as Benedict begins firing at him with his throne, claiming that he still has enough battle power to kill him. When Meggy makes it to the top, Benedict briefly stops shooting Auri in order to take out Meggy, but Auri instead decides to take the blast to save Meggy, temporarily killing him. While Meggy is crying over Auri’s death, Benedict uses this time to steal the Phoenix Egg and claims that he will be reborn, that he wins and that there’s nothing anyone can do about it. Meggy then grabs Auri’s spear and runs at Benedict, the latter then a sadistically jokes that Auri always wanted to be like Aloysius, and now he is. Before Meggy can get the Phoenix Egg however, Whisk shows up to the Lighthouse just in time to block Meggy’s attack. Already enraged by her friend’s death, Meggy threatens Whisk to step aside. Whisk ignores and both women draw guns.

In SUNSET PARADISE - EP 10: Rebirth, Benedict watches the fight between Meggy and Whisk, even assisting the latter at one point. After the fight, Meggy uses Whisk’s grappling hook to snag the Phoenix Egg, allowing the Phoenix to hatch peacefully, reviving Auri and preventing Benedict from using it to regain his true form, much to the latter’s anger. During this, Benedict commands Whisk to prepare to kill Meggy and Auri, or else after he’s done with them, he will presumably have Whisk killed. This, alongside the fact that Whisk doesn’t have her mask at the moment, leads to Whisk making an escape, claiming Benedict doesn’t pay her enough. Meggy then tells Benedict that he’s failed like last Phoenix Festival, but Benedict then reminds them that he also killed a sheriff last Phoenix Festival and attempts to kill Meggy and Auri one final time. After they manage to defeat him, Benedict breathes in Whisk's fear gas and hallucinates Aloysius, which terrifies him and makes him attempt to escape arrest via his damaged drone. Meggy warns him that the drones gonna explode, but he refuses to listen and continues, resulting in his drone exploding, finally ending his terror on Port Aurora.

Whilst he may be dead, at the end of the episode, he is seen in the In-between, watching Whisk find her mask and run off. He attempts to command Whisk through the screen, but has an encounter with Aloysius, to which he screams in terror.
