The Silurians was the name given to a race of Earth Reptiles which had ruled Earth in prehistory, before having to preserve themselves underground, and are recurring antagonists in Doctor Who.
History[]
Backstory[]
The Silurians were the dominant Earth species in prehistoric times. In this era, the Silurians co-existed in groups of clans that lived alongside the original ape primitives that were developing on their planet. As a lesser species, these hominids became the primary livestock of the Silurians.
However, this era was cut short. Some of their scientists calculated that a small planetoid was destined to draw the atmosphere away from Earth when it passed very close to it, preventing the surface from being breathable, wiping out "all life". The majority of Silurians created massive underground hibernation shelters, where they would be preserved from the disaster, while others created Arks that travelled into space, beinging along Dinosaur specimens. However, they were unaware the dangerous planetoid that they predicted would draw away the atmosphere was instead drawn into Earth's orbit and became the Moon. As a result, the Silurians were never revived, as the atmosphere was not drawn away, as was predicted, for it to return to the planet.
Awakenings[]
19th century[]
Prior to 1888, a Silurian colony was awoken by underground digging. After it was destroyed, the only survivor, Vastra, hunted and killed several, until the Doctor persuaded her to live in peace. She went onto become the leader of the Paternoster Row gang, defending Earth from threats.
20th century[]
A colony of Silurians were awoken from hibernation by the nearby nuclear power research centre in Wenley Moor in Doctor Who and the Silurians. Dr Quinn, while potholing made first contact, and promised to aid them in return for scentific knowledge. Sightings of Silurians triggered a race memories in some humans, who were reduced to a primitive state. One Silurian was shot in the caves after an encounter with Major Baker, and went above ground, attacking a farming couple in a frenzied state, before being captured by Quinn, who was killed by the Silurian.
After meeting this Silurian, the Third Doctor initially managed to negotiate a compromise between humanity and the Silurians with the colony's leader, Okel L'da. However, due to disagreements between him and the younger Morka, he was killed, and Morka took over, who was far more detemined to wipe humanity. The Silurians created a virus that would poison humanity, however, despite killing hundreds due to infecting Baker and being spread by civil servant Masters, the Doctor and Liz Shaw found a cure. The Silurians then attempted to use the facility to disperse the Van Allen radiation belt, wiping out humanity while allowing reptillian life to thrive. The Doctor convinced the Silurians to reenter hibernation, and thwarted their plan, hoping he could still negotiate with them.
Morka opted to stay behind when there were only a few pods left, willingly giving leadership to his ally K'to. Angry that the Doctor had tricked him, Morka tried to kill him when he returned to the Silurian base. However, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart arrived at shot and wounded Morka. The dying Morka tried to revive one of the Silurians from hibernation, however the base was bombed by UNIT on the Brigadier's orders to preempt any threat.
