Sentinel Prime is the main antagonist of the 2011 science-fiction action film Transformers: Dark of the Moon, the third installment of the live-action Transformers film series.
He was the original Leader of the Autobots and Optimus Prime's mentor, before going missing in action during the Cybetronian War. After his resurrection, it is revealed that he betrayed the Autobots and made a deal with Megatron so that he could restore Cybertron as his domain to rule with all of humanity his slaves. He became Optimus Prime archenemy.
He was voiced by the late Leonard Nimoy, who also portrayed Galvatron in The Transformers: The Movie, Mirror Spock and Henoch in Star Trek: The Original Series, Dr. Barry Mayfield in Columbo, Mr. Hyde in The Pagemaster, the Zarn in Land of the Lost, David Kibner in Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and Master Xehanort in the Kingdom Hearts series.
History[]
Transformers: Dark of the Moon[]
Past[]
On the planet Cybertron, there was a great war between the Autobots (led by Sentinel) and the Decepticons (led by the Fallen) that practically destroyed Cybertron. Upon noticing that the Autobots were never gonna be the victors over the war, Sentinel Prime previously made a secret pact with Megatron (the Fallen's apprentice) to help him recreate Cybertron in the name of the Decepticons. Megatron told him to take his Space Bridge pillars (machines that can teleport anything) to the planet Earth and they'll recreate Cybertron there.
Sentinel Prime flew away in a ship called the Ark that carried hundreds of Space Pillars. Sentinel Prime was supposed to warp jump to Earth so he and Megatron could recreate Cybertron. However, before he could warp jumped, Decepticon ships dealt heavy damage towards the Ark, resulting in Sentinel Prime to accidentally crashed landed on the dark side of the Moon. This also resulted in Sentinel Prime entering in stasis lock.
In 1969, Neil Armstrong was secretly assigned to search on the Moon and analyzes the crash. Armstrong claimed there were no survivors. Since 1972 no one went to the moon since, and was deemed above classified. Neil Armstrong decided to take the space bridge pillars from the Moon, which were then stored in secret by the government which became a law that no one is to know of the alien technology. This law was enforced by the arrogant Director of National Intelligence, Charlotte Mearing before Sentinel was revived.
Present Day[]
Following the death of the Fallen, Optimus Prime and Ratchet were helping their human allies protecting the Earth, when they encountered a piece of a machine that was originally part of the Ark. They eventually discovered that the Ark crashed landed on the dark side of the moon.
The Autobots flew to the dark side of the Moon and found the Ark, along with both Sentinel Prime, and five pillars. With the Autobot Matrix of Leadership, Optimus revived Sentinel Prime. Sentinel scanned a Rosenbauer Fire Engine for an Earth form. When Sentinel Prime and Optimus Prime were talking to each other alone, Optimus thought that since Sentinel Prime was his leader, Sentinel should have the Autobot Matrix of Leadership and continue leading the Autobots. However, Sentinel said that since he knows nothing about this planet, Optimus should keep the Matrix, teach him about the planet, and continue being the leader of the Autobots.
Betraying the Autobots[]

The Decepticon sub-group, the Dreads (Hatchet, Crowbar and Crankcase) chased after Sentinel Prime on his way to a different NEST base. Bumblebee, Dino, Ironhide and Sideswipe guarded Sentinel allowing him to escape wherein Bumblebee and Dino killed Hatchet while Ironhide and Sideswipe destroyed Crankcase and Crowbar. After the chase scene ended, Sentinel revealed his true colors, claiming that the Autobots shall realize that he was not actually going to help the Autobots win the war, but instead made a deal with Megatron. He then murdered Ironhide, the Autobot closest to him, to distract NEST before wiping them out, with only a few human survivors.
The Invasion and Usurping the Decepticons[]
With the help of Megatron, Starscream and other Decepticons, they were able to open a space gate so that the Decepticon protoforms can invade the Earth. He decided to spare Optimus, because he was his apprentice once, and he wanted Optimus to realize how little humans actually cared for them (foreshadowing what would happen in Age of Extinction). They first took over Chicago, IL and blocked it off so the protoforms would kill any Autobots attempting to infiltrate. The protoforms also killed most of the Chicagoans (except for Dylan Gould due to him being an ally of Soundwave, and Carly, his girlfriend).
As the Space Bridge pillars were being set up, Megatron began to go on about the success and victory of their plan, in which Sentinel then attacked him, reminding him of his place: he was not working for Megatron, he was working with him. He then proceeded to take over full command of the Decepticons. Sentinel stayed out of most of the battle, relying on the Decepticon warriors instead, including (but not limited to) Shockwave, Soundwave, Laserbeak, Barricade and Starscream (all of which, except for Barricade, would be killed during the battle).
Transporting Cybertron and Death[]
Optimus kills Sentinel out of rage.
Other Decepticons were placed around the world with a few of the Pillars. They were going to be used to open a Space Gate and bring Cybertron into the Earth's atmosphere. After the control pillar was deactivated by Optimus, (the Pillar that controls all the other pillars) Sentinel Prime fought all the Autobots and N.E.S.T. with little to no effort. While he was fighting the Autobots, Sentinel Prime ordered any surviving Decepticons and allies of the Decepticons to reactivate the pillar.
NEST was able to land some shots on Sentinel, and he attempted to escape, but Optimus chased him and attacked him. Sentinel managed to overpower Optimus and slice one of his arms, allowing his former student to vainly beg for mercy before he would deliver the killing blow. Simultaneously, Carly (Sam Witwicky's new girlfriend) convinced Megatron to turn on Sentinel Prime, claiming that if Sentinel did succeed in killing Optimus and transported Cybertron, Megatron would be nothing more than Sentinel's pawn. Megatron chooses to heed her warning and rushes into the one-sided duel just as Sentinel is about to kill Optimus and severely incapacitates Sentinel, claiming that the Earth is his planet to rule. After the space bridge was destroyed, Megatron proposed a rather insincere truce to Optimus, but Optimus refused and slew him with no effort, knowing his true intentions and possibly doing so as punishment of his previous actions.
With his plans in ruins, the severely weakened Sentinel attempted to justify his actions, claiming all he ever wanted was to save the Transformer species, which was why he betrayed Optimus. His former pupil, however, countered it was never about betraying Optimus; by foolishly allying with Megatron and planning to enslave humanity, Sentinel had "betrayed [him]self" and everything he had ever stood for. Upon hearing Optimus pick up and recharge Megatron's fusion shotgun, Sentinel whose panicked and desperately begged for Optimus not to kill him. Optimus knowing Sentinel could no longer be trusted and already disgrace his ancestors honor pride, shot him in the back and then the head, putting an end to Sentinel's life. With Sentinel's death, the deaths of Ironhide and the human soldiers were avenged as well.
Transformers: Age of Extinction[]
Despite being killed in the previous film, KSI manages to recover parts of Sentinel's body, particularly his head, which are used to create many man-made Transformers, including Galvatron, who is later revealed to be possessed by the still living mind consciousness of Megatron himself. Despite being deceased, his crime actions carried over from the previous film and resulted in all Transformers being hunted down and executed by Cemetery Wind, led by Harold Attinger, Lockdown, and James Savoy. This includes the Autobots, being amongst the many blamed for the numerous human casualties prior to "The Battle of Chicago", despite their deaths actually being at the hands of Sentinel and the invasive hostile Decepticons.
Personality[]
Sentinel Prime, at first, seemed to be a heroic figure and a symbol of freedom to Optimus Prime, but later on, he develops into a malevolent and corrupt lunatic who wishes to dictate everyone else, either Cybertronian or human.
As an Autobot, Sentinel had taught the value of freedom being everyone's right back to Optimus when the latter was the former's student. However, over the years, Sentinel Prime has come to prefer having power and authority much more than enforcing freedom for everyone. Optimus claims that the Earth should be the new home for their race as the humans welcomed them, although Sentinel being discriminatory despised the idea of sharing a planet with weaker, smaller organic beings and he wanted Cybertron restored instead. He was more than willing to kill his former student and fellow Transformers if it meant getting his way.
Sentinel for all his claims as a noble extremist wanting his species' survival, slowly reveals his true colors to both the Autobots and Decepticons to be nothing more than a power-hungry narcissist as he supplants Megatron's authority over the Decepticons and trying to kill Optimus in blind fury as he rants about how Cybertron is only his domain to rule as God. Despite the brief succession, it ultimately led to his own downfall as Megatron, having been convinced by Carly that he would only be one of Sentinel's pawns, realized that Sentinel was using him and saved Optimus as he severely incapacitated Sentinel with minimal effort, leaving him defenseless enough for Optimus to execute when he realized the master he respected is dead to him.

- Cybertronian Physiology: As the last of the Primes, Sentinel is one of the most, if not the most powerful Cybertronian, with seemingly only Megatron and Optimus being on par. His powers and abilities include:
- Superhuman Strength: Sentinel is strong enough to rival Optimums in terms of strength
- Superhuman Durability: Can scale to Optimus and Megatron
- Superhuman Speed: Can scale to Optimus and Megatron
- Superhuman Agility: Can scale to Optimus and Megatron
- Superhuman Stamina: Sentinel is able to fight end on end without having to stop. The amount of Stamina he has is far more than the amount that Optimus has.
- Superhuman Reflexes: Can scale to Optimums and Megatron
- Longevity: Due to him being a cyberton he has a far longer life span than a human.
- Space Bridge Formation: Sentinel can control the space bridge with pillars allowing him to open a portal through space. This acts very similar to teleportation.
Abilities[]
- Master Combatant: Sentinel Prime was an excellent fighter, able to even beat a Decepticon in combat. He is also skilled with his melee weapon the Primax Blade. During his final battle with Optimus he was able to hold against his former student (however he did use dirty tactics like ordering all Decepticon ships to fire at Optimus). He also singled-handling took most of the Autobots and N.E.S.T. Troops and later on on a bridge he gain the upper hand, due to Optimus being blinded by anger, and manage to cripple his arm and almost killed him until Megatron intervened.
- Master Leader: Sentinel Prime led Cybertron when it was the crown jewel of the galaxy.
Equipment[]
- Primax Blade: The Primax Blade was the ancient double-bladed sword owned and used by Sentinel Prime as his main melee weapon of choice. It's versatile enough to have two configurations: while Sentinel can wield it one-handed in its long dual-bladed form, it also has a half-length mode which he can wave around just as easily. He stows it on his back when it's not in use. Sentinel Prime's bladed staff is able to be folded up into a single sword in the film. It was used by Sentinel to fight Optimus Prime, and was lost in the Chicago River after Sentinel was beaten down by Megatron.
- Shield: Sentinel Prime also carries a large shield which he used to defend himself against multiple enemies.
- Cosmic Rust Cannon: Sentinel Prime carries a Cosmic Rust cannon that causes any metal it fires upon to rust and crumple away. He used it to murder Ironhide. It is a powerful weapon and doesn't just infect him with cosmic rust, but causes horrific exterior damage to Ironhide, killing him in just three shots and the effect rusts the Autobot veteran away with his body falling apart. His action shows that he revealed his true colors — Sentinel had made a deal with Megatron. Although this weapon is never used to its full potential. As for the weapon in general, not many Autobots like it, as they thought it was something the Decepticons would likely use, and wasn't up to their honorable standard. He lost it during his final battle when he was hit with a rocket launcher.
- Pillars: The Pillars were a set of transport devices created by Sentinel Prime. Together, the Pillars formed a Space Bridge, which could transport matter through time and space. The Control Pillar was the primary Pillar that controlled the rest to form the Space Bridge, and when it was destroyed during the Battle of Chicago, the other Pillars shut off, most falling into and burning up in orbit, but at least one found its way into the hands of Edmund Burton.

- He is the third incarnation of Sentinel Prime to be in a negative light with the IDW Sentinel Prime being the first, and the Transformers Animated Sentinel Prime being the second.
- Sentinel Prime's voice actor, the late Leonard Nimoy, is most famously known for portraying Mr. Spock in the Star Trek franchise. Coincidentally, Spock's voice is also heard in the first Transformers film, as audio from Bumblebee's faulty speech generator.
- One of Sentinel Prime's lines, "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few", references a similar quote from Spock in Star Trek: The Original Series.
- Nimoy was previously considered to voice The Fallen in Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen.
- Nimoy had previously voiced Galvatron in The Transformers: The Movie.
- Sentinel's facial features were based off of former James Bond actor Sean Connery. When Leonard Nimoy was cast as the character's voice, his own features were incorporated into Sentinel' face as well.

- He was originally going to be named "Ultra Magnus", a failed Prime from the original Transformers movie and a protagonist in third season on the television show.
- Sentinel Prime is colored yellowish-orange in the trailer of Dark of the Moon similar to a design of his in G1, though he is actually colored red throughout the movie.
- In an original draft of Transformers: Dark of the Moon, after Sentinel Prime kills Ironhide, had featured him trying to kill Bumblebee but instead kills Skids who got in the way and then Mudflap after he tried to avenge his twin brother. It was cut due to negative views about the said Autobots. This is still seen in the comic book and novel adaptations.
- Though he is portrayed as a villain, Sentinel Prime's film appearance and alt mode has been used to many outside incarnations of his on the Transformers universe such as Kre-O version and Angry Birds version.
- At first, Sentinel was the key character in Transformers: Dark of the Moon, though his betrayal towards the Autobots, and even Megatron as well, promoted Sentinel to be the true main antagonist for the rest of the film.
- Because of his actions, Sentinel Prime is the opposite of Jetfire from Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. While the former was an Autobot turned Decepticon, the latter was the opposite.
- Another thing that makes them counterparts is that Sentinel Prime was against the human race (for a former Autobot), while Jetfire was supportive for them (for a former Decepticon).
- All of his toys classified him as an Autobot. For the 2018 Takara Tomy Studio Series, he is classified as a Decepticon due to his selfish betrayal on the film, despite not actually being a Decepticon himself.
- Sentinel Prime chose to spare Optimus's life at the Lincoln Memorial as he was in truth setting up a more effective trap to kill Optimus and the Autobots in one fell swoop while leaving him with a threat. In earlier drafts of the film, however, Sentinel was very much willing to kill him but was forced to spare him to ensure the pillars wouldn't be destroyed, which is taken to be written at the novelization.
- In the final seconds before the death scene of Optimus Prime's execute him to death, Sentinel Prime is seemingly blind and wrong dodge with Megatron's fusion shotgun. These is because, Sentinel badly injuries after his head kicked by Megatron's right leg, causing some of his head sensors shattered.
- Sentinel Prime is a dark mirror of Optimus Prime: They both wanted what's best for the Cybertronian race, but while Optimus was able to coexist with mankind peacefully and even aid them, Sentinel sought to enslave them and have the Decepticons rule the planet as he loses his good intentions to a lust for power. In Age of Extinction, after seeing his fellow Autobots killed by Cemetery Wind, Optimus became briefly disillusioned with mankind, but after helping Cade and Tessa defeat Lockdown and Cemetery Wind, he regained his optimism for mankind safety. To sum up, Sentinel is what Optimus could have been if he allowed his cynicism and pride to consume him.
What makes him a Almost Complete Monster?[]
- Even as the heroic mentor of Optimus Prime and leader of the Autobots, Sentinel Prime wasn't exactly the most morally pure hero ever as his signature weapon was the Cosmic Rust Cannon, a gun that inflicts acid on his victims that rusts them to death, which is a war crime on Cybertron.
- The war only heightened his pride and lust for control. When he realized the Decepticons were winning the war, Sentinel secretly betrays the very organization he lead simply to retain his position at the top. Even if the war ended, he also secretly plotted to undermining Megatron's power from the beginning.
- Cold-bloodedly murders his old soldier Ironhide by shooting him in the back with his rust gun, which causes Ironhide to painfully rust away and crumbles on spot. Sentinel then announces his betrayal before attempting to shoot Bumblebee and destroys the NEST base to steal the Pillars.
- On the Washington Monument, he gathers the Pillars to unleash an army of Decepticons that destroy everything on sight.
- While he does spare Optimus and mutters "Forgive me" when activating the pillars, as it is retroactively revealed this was a lie. Sentinel was feigning benevolence to make humanity and the Autobots to believe his false claims of meaning the planet no harm and that Sentinel will make the Decepticons leave in peace if Earth exiles the Autobots. In truth, Sentinel and the Decepticons were all plotting a trap for the Autobots and blow them up on their ship to dispose the sole threats to their plans.
- And even to make humanity exile the Autobots, he threatens to unleash the Decepticon armada to bombard them if they refuse.
- Arriving at the city of Chicago, he promptly orders the entire city to be sealed off and turned into a fortress, having the entire city bombarded by Decepticons caused the death of over sixty thousand people, just to show the Earth that resistance is futile under his and the Decepticons rule, leading to the most infamously bloody scene in the entire film series.
- Among the thousands of Chicago citizens who were killed as a result of Sentinel Prime's massacre of the city were Izabella's parents (causing her to become hateful of Transformers until she befriended Canopy and Sqweeks many years later), and James Savoy's sister (causing him to join Cemetery Wind to kill all Transformers and their allies in retaliation).
- When Megatron claims they will rule the planet together, Sentinel finds the thought of sharing power over the planet unimaginable and rips out a part of Megatron's head as a show of force, showcasing that Sentinel is in charge over the Decepticon invasion, their plans, and that he has usurped Megatron in everything but in-name.
- He seeks to use the Pillars to drag Cybertron to Earth, killing the latter for its resources and decimating life on the planet and enslaving any surviving humans to rebuild Cybertron.
- When Optimus confronts him for his betrayal, Sentinel dishonorably orders all the Decepticons to fire at Optimus and severs his arm. He then nearly kills his former protege if Megatron hadn't intervened.
- While in the end he tells Optimus he only wanted toe ensure the survival of their species and to revive Cybertron, Optimus catches on he is simply pleading for undeserved mercy and executes him on spot, disappointed on how the man he admired as a father figure fell so much, giving him an ironic yet fitting death.
- His actions during the Battle of Chicago would indirectly have several disastrous consequences. This deteriorated the relations between humans and Cybertronians even more, as it led Harold Attinger to see them as a threat, leading to the formation of Cemetery Wind. Cemetery Wind would then go on to recruit Lockdown and kill all Autobots and Decepticons alike and starting the Battle of Hong Kong. After that, the world leaders deemed all Cybertronians illegal and formed the Transformers Reaction Force in order to exterminate all Cybertronians on sight until the battle with Quintessa.
What prevents him from being a Complete Monster?[]
- He wanted to bring back his planet and was clearly willing to do anything to do it.
- While it may be true that he almost killed Optimums Prime, he offered him a opportunity to join him in his quest.
- It's likely that he didn't want to kill the autobots and was forced to by Megatron. This is implied by the fact that Megatron often bossed him around and that he wanted to bring back his planet and wanted to go to any length to achieve this goal.
- The humans proved his point when they attempted to murder all autobots in later movies.
- Only Sentinel Prime's novel incarnation can be considered Pure Evil, while his film incarnation can't due to him not killing Skids and Mudflap (though that's more likely because their deaths were cut from the film because of their controversial appearance in the second film), not threatening Mearing to coerce into opening the vault where the Pillars were being kept inside, not trying to kill Optimus at the Lincoln Memorial for not sharing his view about humanity and for actually desiring to restore Cybertron and save all Cybertronians
