The Scientist is a supporting antagonist in the 2021 horror indie game Poppy Playtime.
He is is a delusional and ambitious Playtime CO. scientist working under the Bigger Bodies Initiative that tortured and experimented on employees and orphaned children to create hostile and monstrous toys. The player can currently find one log from him per chapter.
He is voiced by Michael Kovach, who also voiced N from Murder Drones.
Biography[]
The Scientist was employed at an unknown date, but presumably in the 60's/70's, and joined the Bigger Bodies Initiative. He seems to be a very ambitious man who believes in his cause and that the company must "forge onward in the name of science". He would participate in the various tortures and experiments that would cause orphans and his own co-workers to be turned into toys. He seems to know a lot about the Prototype, both of his logs being about him, and also knows about Huggy Wuggy and believes him to be an optimal outcome for the experiments.
His first VHS tape - though chronologically his last - takes place during the Hour of Joy, the event that destroyed Playtime CO. While his co-workers are heard being slaughtered in the background, the Scientist talks about the Prototype and Huggy. He states that the Prototype - "Experiment 1006" - has gone missing and is responsible for what is happening. The Scientist claims he isn't worried about his safety, as he suspects he will be brought back through the initiative, and made his final log so that the Playtime employees that survive the massacre will continue the Bigger Bodies Initiative despite this huge setback. The log ends mid-sentence, heavily implying he was killed by one of the Toys.
In his second VHS tape, he talks about how the Prototype escaped and killed an employee. He remains apathetic towards the employee's death, being more focused on the Prototype's intelligence. He then states that Huggy Wuggy is the desired outcome for a toy.
In his third VHS tape, he prepares to talk about Experiment-1322, a young boy named Kevin, though is interrupted by the child's friend Joseph. While first mad the child was listening to him, the Scientist calms down the boy by telling him he wants to make Kevin "better" and that Joseph can be as smart as he is if he gets good rest and pays attention in school. He then leads Joseph back to bed while assuring him Kevin will return better than ever.
It's been made clear in his first tape that the Scientist was killed during the Hour of Joy. However, it's unknown if he was brought back as a Toy, despite his confidence in his survival.
Personality[]
The Scientist is shown to be obsessed with his work and wants to continue the Bigger Bodies Initiative at all costs, even making a log that would inspire the survivors of the Hour of Joy to continue making experiments instead of saving his own life. He's also shown to be incredibly delusional, believing he's making children better by transforming them into monstrous Toys and that his actions are in the name of science. He's also shown to be arrogant, claiming that those who are not Playtime CO. scientists are "beneath him" and would not understand what he's doing while also letting the Toys kill him due to being confident he'll come back as one of them. The Scientist additionally appears to be insensitive and unempathetic, as he didn't care for the employee killed by the Prototype. On that note, the Prototype seems to be the only experiment to actually intimidate the Scientist, with him noticeably becoming more uneasy when talking about him and immediately putting the blame for the breakout on him, although he ended up correct.
Trivia[]
- He's implied to be high-ranked within Playtime CO. given how he seems to have high knowledge on the dangerous Prototype. If that would be confirmed, then it's possible he had something to do with Marie Payne being turned into Mommy Long Legs.
- It's currently unknown if the Scientist was resurrected like he believed.
