Warden Samuel Norton or known only as Samuel Norton is the main antagonist of the 1982 Stephen King book Rita Hayworth and also the Shawshank Redemption, and the 1994 film of the adaptation with the same name called Shawshank Redemption. He is a corrupt and religious warden from a Shawshank penitentiary.
He was portrayed by Bob Gunton, who also portrayed Leland Owlsley.
Biography[]
Samuel Norton was a religious man who had Andy Dufresne imprisoned, Andy also had a potential that led to him having some protection from the guards, and he had access to the bookstore. It is also revealed by Tommy Williams that during a conversation he had with Red, during a flashback that the murderer of Dufresne's wife is actually Elmo Blatch. And when the only release from Andy's innocence goes to confess the crimes committed by Blatch, Simply put, Norton along with Byron Hadley appear and reveal themselves to be corrupt, then Norton orders Hadley to kill Williams, which he shoots and kills.
However, with Red's help, Dufresne manages to escape from prison, and then when Norton is unmasked, Hadley is arrested, and Norton in the end kills himself.
