Richard Wheatley was the main antagonist on Law & Order: Organized Crime.

He is portrayed by Dylan McDermott, who also portrayed Johnny Morgan in American Horror Story: Asylum.

History[]

Wheatley is a wealthy businessman with close ties to the Mafia, and is suspected to be involved in organized crime, with his online pharmaceutical company Computros believed to be a front for an illegal drug trafficking ring. He is also a suspect in the murder of Detective Stabler's wife Kathy, Stabler. His father, Manfredi Sinatra, was a murderer, white supremacist and mobster (as referred to by Dana Wheatley) who was investigated by Stabler before Richard. Sinatra would often make hurtful and racist comments about Wheatley's family due to their skin colour. When Sinatra agreed to meet with Richard, he started to suspect that Sinatra agreed to meet with him under the orders of a cop which in this case is Detective Stabler. Sinatra told Wheatley that he would never betray his son and apologised for how he made homophobic comments about his family but Richard didn't accept his apology. As a result, Wheatley murdered him. When Sinatra's body was discovered first by Det. Stabler, Stabler stole his phone and made an anonymous call before entering his building. After Manfredi's death was announced to the public, a burglary took place and coronavirus vaccinations were stolen committed by Dr. Laurence Valentine and Richard Wheatley. When Stabler approached Richard, Wheatley put on an act about how he was devastated about his father's tragic death. Stabler showed no fear towards him and immediately knew that Wheatley was behind the burglary. During the investigation, Wheatley held a vaccination party and illegally gave people the vaccinations that he and Valentine took from the truck.

When the squad gathered enough evidence against Wheatley, Stabler and Bell arrested Wheatley for his crimes including for Kathy's murder. Wheatley and the rest of his family were taken to court following the litany of their crimes and Wheatley only was charged with two counts of murder for Kathy's murder and Sinatra's murder. Wheatley was then taken into prison where he bribed Detective Diego Morales to assassinate Angela while she was in witness protection. Angela survived the poisoning and Morales poisoned her again. Morales was then caught and shot and killed by Bell during a hostage situation. Benson and Bell then went to rescue Angela as she was suffering.

Wheatley started cooperating with the feds as a result of his arrest. Wheatley then managed to get the RICO, assault, embezzlement, money laundering and racketeering charges dropped but still has to go to court for Kathy's murder. Later that year, Wheatley was taken to court by Carisi for Kathy's murder and was represented by Rafael Barba, SVU's former ADA. In the end, the jury came back deadlocked and Wheatley was remanded until the next trial. Barba then visited Wheatley in his cell and told him that the murder charge has been dropped. Wheatley was released from prison as a result and assisted an old prison mate, Sebastian McClane, to escape from prison. After McClane's escape, Wheatley became an informant with the FBI.

Wheatley then started hiding McClane in his home and started making him work with him to destroy New York City and Stabler's life. When McClane wanted to make amends for his crimes, Wheatley had his men dress up as FBI agents and kidnap him, delivering him to Angela. Angela then convinces McClane to work with Wheatley and lets him use her car to meet with him. When the police arrive, Angela tells them that McClane stole her car to meet with Wheatley. When McClane met with Wheatley, they escaped by helicopter which was witnessed by Stabler and Bell.

Stabler then started taunting Wheatley by using Angela to get to him. Stabler then arranged to meet with Angela while Wheatley was stalking them. In a jealous rage, Wheatley approaches Angela during her job interview and started abusing her. McClane witnessed the abuse and yelled at him but Wheatley threatened McClane. Wheatley was also revealed to have hired a man named Miles Darman to stalk and harass Bernadette Stabler. Stabler then found out about another plan of Wheatley's and assaulted him in an elevator, taunting him about Angela.

When McClane met with a hacker, Wheatley had her poison him and Wheatley entered her apartment and kidnapped him again. Wheatley then held McClane hostage and ordered him to gather his followers and place bombs at several locations so he can take over New York City. When Stabler and Bell discovered his plan, Wheatley was tracked down to a power plant where a uniformed officer accidentally started a timer which caused a blackout. During the blackout, Wheatley started a video conference with the NYPD and FBI giving them a list of demands. Wheatley ordered them to release Richie from prison so they can reunite, which they did.

During their reunion, Wheatley pulled out a gun and shot and killed Richie with the police watching. Wheatley then worked with Angela and then ordered Miles to assist in kidnapping Bernadette at her home. When Miles pretended to defend her, he was assaulted and Bernadette was abducted. Wheatley then showed Bernadette tied up to Stabler while escaping with Angela to their getaway jet. Stabler then found Bernadette and arrested Miles.

During the case, Stabler managed to get through to Angela and told her that Wheatley doesn't really love her and that he murdered Richie. After hearing the news, Wheatley tried to grab the phone from her but Angela fought him for the phone and continued speaking to Stabler. Angela then detoured off the road and ran the car off a cliff, killing her and Wheatley. Angela's body was discovered at the bottom of the cliff but Wheatley's was never found.
