Randall "Randy" Boggs is a former employee at Monsters Inc. in the movie Monsters, Inc., vying with James P. Sullivan for the top position on the Scarer Board. He, Sullivan and Mike Wazowski previously attended Monsters University together in the Scare Program, as seen in the prequel Monsters University. He later returned in the TV show, Monsters at Work.

He is one of Sulley's two archenemies (alongside Henry J. Waternoose III), Mike's former best friend-turned-archenemy, Fungus's former boss, minion, partner-in-crime and unwilling boss of Henry J. Waternoose III and Johnny Worthington III and Chet Alexander's former friend.

History[]

Monsters, University[]

In the Monsters University prequel, a teenage Randall appears as a kind, shy, and nervous monster who was Mike's only friend before he met Sullivan.

After enrolling at MU, Mike is assigned to room 319 where he meets Randall, who becomes his roommate. Randall greets him amicably, and the two quickly become best friends. When Randall accidentally turns invisible, he expresses his insecurity about showing off his powers in class as they will make fun of him. However, Mike praises his abilities and recommends him to use them, but asks him not to use his glasses as they don't turn invisible like him.

Later, on his first night at university, Randall makes some cupcakes to serve at a college party in an attempt to get more friends. He also says that he wants to be part of the "cool kids" to be popular. For his part, while Mike is studying, he runs into Sulley, who has stolen Fear Tech's mascot, Archie, who ends up escaping and Mike and Sulley go after him. Along the way, Mike accidentally bumps into Randall, spilling his cupcakes that fall into his face and smearing him, embarrassing him in front of the other kids.

Throughout the semester, Randall is helping Mike try new scare tactics and study for the final exam, like asking him some questions about fears that Mike easily answers. After, when the final exam arrives, Mike and Randall are studying together in class. However, Mike soon starts a conflict with Sullivan after the latter intentionally knocks over his books. Randall tells Mike to move somewhere else to avoid problems, but Mike just ignores him. After a brief incident, Sulley and Mike break Dean Hardscrabble's scare can, who then kicks them both out.

Later, the Scare Games are coming up, and Randall joins Roar Omega Roar, the best fraternity on campus, ditching Mike instead of joining Oozma Kappa with him. With this, Randall was slowly breaking his friendship with Mike. He was part of the Olympic Games alongside Roar Omega Roar as Oozma Kappa's rival. Their friendship came to end when Randall participated in humiliating Mike and his team in front of the entire faculty, causing the two to break their bond.

In the final round of the Scare Games, Randall and Sullivan compete against each other in a scare simulator to scare a doll. Randall attempts to use invisibility to but Sulley ruins his camouflage pattern by letting out a louder roar, knocking Randall down onto a carpet of hearts and ending up taking on his color. Despite giving his roar, Randall loses to Sulley. Exiting the simulator, Randall is humiliated and the disappointed ROR's kick him out for his failure. He glares at Sulley and angrily exclaims that he will never lose to him again.

Since this incident, Randall began to develop his hatred towards Sullivan and Mike until he became their new enemy.

Monsters, Inc[]

In the film, Randall is Sulley's arch-enemy. He is first seen scaring Mike. He also tried to beat Sulley, and Randall almost won until Sulley scares most of the children which cause him to win. However, Randall build Scream Extractor, and tries to kidnapped Boo. Later in the film, it was revealed that Randall was working for Mr. Waternoose. Randall tries to get Boo and defeat Sulley and Mike, but failed, and was thrown out to the human world where he was hit by a shovel from a woman.

Personality[]

In "Monsters University", Randall was a kind, shy, nervous and friendly teenager and Mike's best friend during his college days. He is insecure at first and afraid to show his invisibility in class for fear of embarrassing himself, but Mike gives him confidence and courage to use them. While he was genuinely affable and cooperative with Mike, Randall's personality gradually changed. His desire to be popular eventually led him to abandon Mike to join the best fraternity on campus, Roar Omega Roar, rejecting Mike's offer to join Oozma Kappa and turning his back on his friend to hang out with "the cool kids". When Mike and Sullivan team up with Oozma Kappa and slowly form a bond, Randall turns on Mike and ends up being part of Johnny's cruel prank on Oozma Kappa, releasing stuffed animals that were hanging from the ceiling above them, not having problem humiliating his former friend. Following the Scare Games final, Randall was humiliated by Sulley and kicked out of Roar Omega Roar, causing him to furiously swear that he will never lose to Sullivan. From that moment on, he became bitter, resentful, vengeful, and envious towards Sullivan and Mike, and developed his rivalry toward the pair in "Monsters Inc".
