Zeffeero, also known as Rain is an antagonist in Mortal Kombat 1. While originally a loyal member of Empress Sindel's court, Shang Tsung would corrupt him with temptations of power, causing him to turn on his people and join General Shao's rebellion.
Rain is voiced by Noshir Dalal, who also voiced Bode Akuna in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Sandayu Oda in Cyberpunk 2077, Charles Smith in Red Dead Redemption 2, and Vice Admiral Rampart in Star Wars: The Bad Batch.
Biography[]
Zeffeero was born as the son of Amara and an unnamed father, and attended Outworld's Imperial Academy of Sorcery, where he proved to be blessed to have an talent for hydromancy, taking on the name Rain after honing his skills for many years.
The ambitious mage rises through the imperial ranks to become the High Mage of Outworld, secretly aided by General Shao, who also taught him combat, considering him potentially useful in future. Empress Sindel became really fond of Rain, thinking of him as a son. After Shang Tsung infiltrated Sindel's court, he inflamed Rain's ambitions, intriguing him with the possibility of learning the darkest and most powerful sorcery. Misguided, this leads him to betray Sindel and join General Shao's efforts to overthrow the imperial family.
Rain was seen working with Quan Chi at Ying Fortress, smelting pure gold for the Soul Stealers. Rain spotted Scorpion escaping, a reflection stops him with a wave of water. Admitting his allegiance to Shang Tsung, he and Quan Chi fought the ninja, but were defeated, allowing him to escape. Rain joined Shao, Nitara and Goro and the rebellion in confronting Liu Kang and Sindel's party in Shang Tsung's laboratory. He fought Liu Kang, but was kicked away by Sindel in a surprise attack. Rain manages to recover and chased them into the public laboratory, confronting Sindel himself. Sindel tells Rain that his betrayal hurts her the most, but Rain claims he's outgrown her and that Shang Tsung opened his eyes to the real depths of his potential. Sindel manages to defeat him and declares Rain dead to her for his treason. Sindel would go onto be killed in the conflict, but Shao and Shang Tsung were ultimately defeated by Liu Kang and imprisoned by Empress Mileena, which forces Rain to flee Outworld.
Rain joins up with Havik in Orderrealm and helps him destroy Seido with a massive flood, allowing Havik to achieve his dreams of anarchy. However, 500,000 Seidans are killed in the assault, a death toll that compounds Rain with massive guilt. Abandoning any other ambitions he had, he turns himself in to Outworld's authorities to accept whatever punishment Mileena has for him. Several intro dialogues show him having genuine remorse and wanting to make amends, but some such as Geras noting that him facing punishments may not be permanent.
Personality[]
Because Rain's ambitions were severely inflamed by Shang Tsung, he was a traitorous anti-villain but unlike his 1st and 2nd Timeline counterparts who are egotistical, despite that fact he's power hungry, he's not egotistical and genuinely cares about people making him honorable. He is also a polite Edenian despite being a traitor, he is also a well-intentioned extremist, but in his ending, due to drowning Seido in a massive flood to help Havik, allowing Havik to achieve his dreams of anarchy, because 500,000 Seidans were killed, Rain is now feeling endless remorse for his crimes and no longer a traitor, he turns himself into Outworld's authorities to accept whatever punishment Mileena has for him, he is now a reformed and humbled person now, and he now hopes to be forgiven and in intro dialogues, he shows an endless amount of genuine remorse and wanting to make amends, Geras telling him that facing punishments may not be permanent.
Powers and Abilities[]
Rain is a master of Hydromancy, which he channels via a staff, which he can use offensively. He can create portals of water that he can pass through with ease, create whirlpools on the ground that can entrap foes, and with enough effort can raise an enormous flood.
