You will serve me in the Netherrealm.
~ Quan Chi in Mortal Kombat (2011).
Your position is precarious. To survive, you must submit.
~ Quan Chi in Mortal Kombat 1.

Quan Chi is one of the main antagonists of the Mortal Kombat franchise. He is a powerful demon necromancer from the Netherrealm (Outworlder in the New Era timeline), and the founder of the Brotherhood of Shadow, the ancient demonic cult that worships the fallen elder god Shinnok, whom he frequently aids in his plans to conquer the realms.

He is infamously responsible for killing Hanzo Hasashi's family and entire the Shirai Ryu clan (as well as framing Sub-Zero for the crime), leading to the former's transformation into the undead warrior Scorpion. He is Shinnok's right-hand and the arch-nemesis of Scorpion.

In the New Era, Quan Chi was an edenian outworlder who worked in the mines until he met Damashi who taught him magic. He is the arch-nemesis of Ashrah.

He was voiced by Herman Sanchez in Mortal Kombat 4, Mortal Kombat: Deception, and Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, Nick Chinlund in Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm, Ronald M. Banks for Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe to Mortal Kombat X and by Sean T. Krishnan (who has also voiced Varuna and Nishumbha in Record of Ragnarok) in Mortal Kombat 1. In live-action, he has been portrayed by Richard Divizio in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, Adoni Maropis in Mortal Kombat: Conquest and Michael Rogers in Mortal Kombat Legacy.

Personality[]

Regardless of timeline, Quan Chi does not care about anyone but himself, except maybe his only two allies he has in each, separate timeline (either Shang Tsung or Shinnok, but even those alliances don't last long). Always going out of his way to manipulate the odds, he only serves people for his own benefit; considering even the few people he shows loyalty to, to be a means to the end. One great example of this would be how he tricked Scorpion into thinking that Bi-Han killed his clan and family. He did this to further his own goals and to provide Shinnok an extra tool to assist him.

Appearance[]

Quan Chi is a tall, well-built man with red eyes. Among his distinct features is his completely white (grey in 3D era) skin. He is also completely bald, devoid of any hair on his head or face.

There also appears to be a chakra on his forehead. In his first appearance, he wore a heavy green uniform with spike-studded black armor and originally, with a yin-yang emblem on it, which seems regal, as he uses it for more formal gatherings. During his escape from Scorpion in the Netherrealm, he has discarded some of his clothing, leaving him with half a portion of his armor and new black gloves, his torso bare otherwise.

Later, he magically carves the inscriptions of the tomb of the Dragon King's army onto his body as somewhat becoming his tattoos. On his belt he now bears the authentic Amulet of Shinnok. The MK team seems to be fond of Quan Chi's Deadly Alliance outfit, as he retains this design in every game released following Deadly Alliance, even games that chronologically predate it.

As of Mortal Kombat X, Quan Chi sports a new outfit that combines traits of both his Mortal Kombat 4 and Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance onwards appearances. While he is still topless, he now wears an armored cuirass with spikes on his collar, reminiscent of his MK4 outfit.

Biography[]

Past[]

Not much is known about Quan Chi's past, except that he is a sorcerer able to travel between realms without being detected by the Elder Gods, which he used to his advantages to amass great powers.

At some point, Quan Chi came across the fallen Elder God Shinnok, who was being tormented by Lucifer, the ruler of Netherrealm. In exchange for power and a place at Shinnok's side, he assisted Shinnok in overthrowing his tormentor and helping him ascend to become the new ruler of the Netherrealm. Shinnok honored his deal and gave Quan Chi incredible powers, as well as a place as his right-hand sorcerer. When Shang Tsung took hold of Kung Lao's soul after he was defeated by Goro, he was able to somehow learn where Shinnok's long lost amulet was. Shang Tsung later traded this information with Quan Chi. But in return, Quan Chi would help to revive Sindel and allow Shao Kahn to take control of Earthrealm when the time came.

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero[]

File:Quanchi.jpg

Quan Chi in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero.

In order to get Shinnok's amulet back, he made a deal with the Lin Kuei that he would destroy their rival, the Shirai Ryu. The Lin Kuei sent their best assassin Sub-Zero in order to get the amulet back. Sub-Zero did exactly that, killing Scorpion in the process, something which Quan Chi would later use to his advantage, resurrecting Scorpion as one of his soldiers by claiming Sub-Zero killed his family and clan. Once Sub-Zero acquired the amulet, Quan Chi snatched it from Sub-Zero. Revealing his deception, he explained its origins before leaving to give the amulet back to Shinnok. Unknown to Shinnok, Quan Chi gave him a fake amulet and kept the real one for himself for his own selfish goals. Quan Chi would soon after be confronted by Sub-Zero, who had been sent by Raiden to retrieve the amulet. Quan Chi was temporarily defeated by Sub-Zero who grabbed Shinnok's fake amulet.

Mortal Kombat-Mortal Kombat 3[]

Quan Chi is never seen in the first three games, but he does play a role in them. He is the reason Scorpion is at the three tournaments, Scorpion also succeeds in getting his revenge on Sub-Zero killing him, Quan Chi uses this situation to his advantage resurrecting him as Noob Saibot. He also later helps Shao Kahn with the resurrection of Sindel, which would enable Shao Kahn to attempt to invade Earthrealm. Though Shao Kahn's invasion failed, it gave Quan Chi the opportunity to make his move.

Mortal Kombat 4[]

File:Quan Chi MK4.gif

Quan Chi in Mortal Kombat 4.

Quan Chi spends the following years assisting Shinnok in preparation for his grand return, as well as leading the cult known as the Brotherhood of Shadow. In order to defeat the younger Sub-Zero, Quan Chi was able to convince Scorpion that the younger Sub-Zero was the one that killed his family and clan. Scorpion was able to defeat Sub-Zero and was ready to kill him, but Quan Chi appeared and informed Scorpion that he was the true murderer, not Sub-Zero. Quan Chi attempted to banish Scorpion to the Neatherrealm, but thinking quickly Scorpion tackled him and banished them both to the Neatherrealm.

Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance[]

File:Mkda BODY QUANCHI ALT.png

After getting banished to the Netherrealm, Quan Chi was tortured by Scorpion for a long time, with Scorpion was getting stronger and Quan Chi was getting weaker. He was eventually rescued by Drahmin and Moloch. Quan Chi promised to help them get out of the Netherrealm, but when he spotted a portal to Outworld, he broke his promise and left Drahmin and Moloch behind, making them angry. The portal led Quan Chi to discover the mummified army of Onaga, the former ruler of Outworld. He also realized the army was unbeatable since they were able to revive constantly. This gave Quan Chi an idea, but he would need help to put it into action.

But before he could do anything, Scorpion caught up to Quan Chi, which made him end up in fellow sorcerer Shang Tsung's garden. Shang Tsung helped Quan Chi fend off Scorpion. This gave Quan Chi a plan, and he made an offer to Shang Tsung he could not refuse. He would help Quan Chi revive Onaga's army, and he would open up a route to the heavens, providing Shang Tsung with an unlimited supply of souls. Shang Tsung accepted Quan Chi's offer, and this was the beginning of the titular "deadly alliance".

In order to ensure their victory, the alliance would need to eliminate their two greatest enemies, Shao Kahn and Liu Kang. They first went after Shao Kahn, initially pledging their loyalty falsely to him before they turned on him. Shao Kahn, outnumbered, unprepared, and weakened from his failed invasion of Earthrealm, was defeated and killed. In actuality and unbeknownst to the villains, that Shao Kahn was a clone. They next went after Liu Kang in Earthrealm's Wu Shi Academy, where Liu Kang was practicing. Shang Tsung shapeshifted into Kung Lao and then snuck up from behind and snapped Liu Kang's neck and consumed his soul.

But neither of the sorcerers really trusted one another, as Shang Tsung had secretly made a deal with Drahmin and Moloch. Quan Chi also had his suspicions himself.

The deadly alliance soon took over the troops of several other Mortal Kombat villains, including Kano, Drahmin, and Moloch, and used them to conquer an Outworld village. The two leaders of the deadly alliance defeated the champions that Earthrealm sent against them, including Kung Lao and Raiden, but Quan Chi soon learned of Shang Tsung's deception. So once all their enemies were defeated, they turned against each other, and Quan Chi would be the victor.

Mortal Kombat: Deception[]

File:Quan Chi in the Mortal Kombat Deception Opening.jpg

However, Quan Chi had barely any time to celebrate before the newly resurrected dragon king Onaga showed up. Onaga shrugged off all of Quan Chi's attacks so quickly, him, Shang Tsung and Raiden teamed up in order to defeat Onaga. But Onaga was too powerful and they stood no chance, so in a last-ditch attempt, Raiden blows himself up to defeat Onaga. Quan Chi is able to quickly escape, however. It's unknown how he got away, but it's likely he teleported away.

Mortal Kombat: Armageddon[]

File:Chi versus.png

Quan Chi in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon.

Shang Tsung, Shao Kahn, Onaga... my comrades; we are all treacherous by nature and betrayal is to be expected, but if we do not stand together, at least initially, it could mean the end of the Forces of Darkness.
~ Quan Chi in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, assuring Shao, Tsung and Onaga that they must work together.

Quan Chi is able to return in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, likely with some help from Shinnok. Knowing the realms are on the brink of the apocalypse and wanting the powers of Blaze, he formed a temporary alliance with Onaga, Shang Tsung, Shao Kahn, and even Scorpion, along with many more in the Forces of Darkness.

Quan Chi participates in the battle at the Pyramid of Argus for Blaze's power. He eventually ends up fighting the blind warrior Kenshi, but Quan Chi's alliance ultimately falls apart and he is thrown off the Pyramid of Argus by Shang Tsung, who was in disguise as Ermac. In his non canon ending, Quan Chi managed to absorb Blaze's abilities, and brazenly challenged the Elder Gods. The sorcerer would suffer the most ironic of fates, being transformed into his own amulet, which was sent back in time to be discovered by Shinnok in the ancient past. His remains, in the form of the amulet, would go onto be used by Shinnok and Quan Chi himself for millennia until it's destruction when Quan Chi absorbed Blaze's power, creating a time loop.

Quan Chi is shown to have made it about midway up the stairs, but he is ultimately one of many killed in Armageddon, ending this version of Quan Chi once and for all.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe[]

File:Mkvsdcquanchi.jpg

Quan Chi in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.

Shinnok will be displeased by your inability to take Earthrealm.
~ Quan Chi's first words in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, speaking to Shao Kahn.

Quan Chi is first in the game after Shao Kahn's failed attempted to conquer Earthrealm, presumably the events of the third game. Quan Chi tells Shao Kahn of Shinnok's anger at Shao Kahn's failure to conquer and merge Earthrealm. Shao Kahn then becomes outraged, something Quan Chi finds amusing. Raiden then arrives at Shao Kahn's place for breaking the rules of Mortal Kombat, by attempting to conquer Earthrealm with Mortal Kombat. Quan Chi attempts to escape through a portal, only to be knocked aside by Shao Kahn's hammer.

Quan Chi is then captured by Raiden and taken to the Elder Gods to face judgment for his many crimes, once the trial is over he is banished to the Neatherrealm. Despite his current state, he is somehow contacted by Sub-Zero during the beginning of the DC and MK universes merging. Quan Chi informs Sub-Zero about what fortress that appeared outside the Lin Kuei's headquarters was, and who the fortress belonged to. While the crisis keeps getting worse and the merging continues, Quan Chi manages to get Scorpion to bring Sub-Zero to the Netherrealm where he is imprisoned, promising Scorpion revenge for his clan and family's murder. Scorpion confronts Sub-Zero ready to avenge his family and clan, Sub-Zero tries to deny this, but Quan Chi mockingly asks who else could have done it.

While Sub-Zero and Scorpion fight, the merging of the realms continues and breaks Quan Chi out of his chains, freeing him from the Neatherrealm. Quan Chi tells Sub-Zero to inform Raiden that he will have to work with him and the Forces of Darkness to save Earthrealm from destruction due to the merging. Quan Chi then sends Sub-Zero through a portal back to Earthrealm. Quan Chi then orders Scorpion to find Kitana.

Quan Chi then gathers Shang Tsung and Baraka so they can help him, He is not seen for a while until Scorpion captures Kitana. Quan Chi then shows up and places Kitana under his control, he succeeds, but shortly after spots Shazam flying. Quan Chi, for unknown reasons, tells Shang Tsung, Baraka and Scorpion lure Shazam to the Netherrealm, where he will be weak so they will be able to kill him.

Quan Chi then arrives at Raiden's temple to ask Raiden for help and releases Kitana to show what would happen to everyone. Quan Chi, in order to convince Raiden to help, uses the last of his power to free Kitana from the combat rage, which leaves him to Raiden. This is able to convince Raiden to unite the Forces of Light and Darkness against their new common enemy.

Quan Chi is not seen again after this.

Alternate Timeline[]

Mortal Kombat (2011)[]

Quan Chi is first seen in the game with Shang Tsung during the first tournament when Scorpion appears demanding to face Sub-Zero. Quan Chi, who had sent him there, tells Scorpion to restrain himself, but Shang Tsung initially denies Scorpion his request. after Scorpion defeats Kung Lao and Nightwolf he is able to face Sub-Zero and defeats him. However, Scorpion decides not to kill him as he remembers the deal he made with Raiden. Quan Chi however, senses this and, not wanting all of his plans to be ruined pushes Scorpion to kill Sub-Zero by showing him fake images of Sub-Zero slaughtering his family and clan, when Quan Chi himself did it, which is enough to get Scorpion to kill Sub-Zero. Quan Chi uses the situation to his advantage more by resurrecting Sub-Zero as Noob Saibot to be one of his loyal soldiers. He also later teams up with Scorpion to fight against Liu Kang.

Quan Chi also appears during the second tournament on Outworld, where he is once again the one who sent Scorpion. After the younger Sub-Zero defeats Reptile, Shao Kahn says that Scorpion is Sub-Zero's next opponent. Quan Chi summons Scorpion from the Neatherrealm in order to make that happen. Later in the tournament, Quan Chi partners with Shang Tsung to defeat Kung Lao, but they fail, and Shao Kahn is eventually defeated. Quan Chi helps Shao Kahn heal when Liu Kang punches a hole through his chest with his sorcery and in order to make Shao Kahn's invasion of Earthrealm happen he helps Shao Kahn with resurrecting Queen Sindel and brainwashing her to be completely loyal to Shao Kahn, which meant the Sindel's magic no longer protected Earthrealm.

During the invasion of Earthrealm, Quan Chi is in Shao Kahn's throne room when Mileena returns from Earthrealm with the body of Motaro, who had been killed by Raiden. He also witnesses Shao Kahn sacrifice his right-hand, Shang Tsung in order to enhance Queen Sindel's powers, which causes her to be able to murder almost every Earthrealm warrior. After Kabal wins his battle with Noob Saibot and Mileena, Shao Kahn orders Quan Chi to seal the portal to Earthrealm that Mileena came through so Kobal is unable to escape, but while Quan Chi success in closing the portal Kabal is able to escape just before the portal closes. Quan Chi also with Noob Saibot's assistance opens a Soulnado to the heavens, but is stopped by Nightwolf, so Quan Chi retreats to the Neatherealm.

After Sindel murders, almost every Earthrealm warrior, Raiden, in an act of desperation, goes to the Netherrealm to plead for Quan Chi's assistance. Raiden offers the souls of all of the fallen Earthrealm warriors and even his own soul, any future fallen souls to try and seal the deal. However, Quan Chi refuses, stating he already has a deal with Shao Kahn giving him the souls of everyone who has died in Mortal Kombat, and demonstrates this by summoning undead versions of Kung Lao, Nightwolf, Sindel, Kitana, Jade, Cyber Sub-Zero, Smoke, Jax Briggs, Kurtis Stryker, and Kabal. He orders the undead revenants to attack Raiden showing him that they are under his control. After Raiden defeats the revenants of his former friends, he is forced to flee with nothing. Just before Raiden leaves, Quan Chi informs Raiden that Shao Kahn will soon arrive in the Earthrealm to merge it into the Outworld, giving Raiden the idea if he lets Shao Kahn win, which would cause the Elder Gods will have to get involved because Shao Kahn would be attempting to merge the realms without winning Mortal Kombat. Raiden thanks Quan Chi and leaves.

Raiden is victorious, but everyone fits perfectly into Quan Chi and Shinnok's, who he had been taking orders from the whole time, plan. Since most of the Earthrealm warriors are dead and Outworld is significantly weakened, soon Shinnok would be able to take Earthrealm and Outworld and nobody would be able to oppose him.

Mortal Kombat X Comic[]

As seen in flashback, after Hanzo Hasashi died at the hands of the cryomancer Sub-Zero, Quan Chi approaches the tormented Shirai Ryu in the Netherrealm. Intrigued that the fires of the Netherrealm did not burn him, Quan Chi questions Hanzo over his immunity to hellfire and when Hanzo could only call out to his family, Quan Chi becomes further interested. Using his magic to pull Hanzo to him, Quan Chi imbues Hanzo with the hellfire of the Netherrealm, all the while promising Hanzo vengeance and justice for his clan and family. To the dark sorcerer's delight, the infusion was successful and the wraith Scorpion was born. Quan Chi was present when Scorpion took his retribution on Bi-Han, who pleaded his innocence even as he was being burnt alive, and fought alongside Scorpion against Liu Kang in the Mortal Kombat Tournament.

Quan Chi was present when Shao Kahn adopted Reiko and declared him his most ruthless general. After Kahn's death at the hands of the Elder Gods, Quan Chi spoke with Shinnok. Neither the sorcerer nor the fallen god realized that they were being observed by an enraged Reiko.

As the Netherrealm War began, Quan Chi realized that the cybernetic Sub-Zero still possessed a soul and has his revenants, Smoke and Jax, hold Sub-Zero in place. When Sub-Zero expressed confusion by his friends actions, Quan Chi explained to him that his soul belonged to the Netherrealm and calls a defiant Sub-Zero his puppet. Using his dark magic, Quan Chi destroys Sub-Zero's cyborg body, saying that he doesn't trust technology and prefers the traditions of blood and sorcery. Quan Chi then restores what little of Kuai Liang's human body remained, reviving him as one of his revenants. In the final hours of the Netherrealm War, Quan Chi's fortress was assaulted by Special Forces, the necromancer himself under attack by Sonya Blade as Raiden used his divine power to free Sub-Zero, Jax Briggs, and Scorpion from Quan Chi's enslavement, reviving them in the process.

After the Netherrealm War, Quan Chi went into hiding deep within the Netherrealm, eventually coming into an alliance with the cleric of chaos, Havik. The two struck a deal: Quan Chi would provide Havik with Nitara's Blood Magik, which would allow the cleric to corrupt the Kamidogu that locked away Shinnok's amulet, and in return for this power, Havik would deliver Shinnok's amulet to Quan Chi after undoing Raiden and the Elder God's seal on the relic, so that the sorcerer could free his master. Havik, however, betrayed Quan Chi and attempted to use the amulet to sow chaos among the realms, even desiring to destroy the Netherrealm itself, only for his own plans to fail due to Quan Chi's former servant Scorpion beheading him and casting his still living head into the Netherrealm.

Quan Chi's servants Moloch and Drahmin delivered Havik's severed head to Quan Chi, and as the chaos cleric ranted on how the realms would soon be doomed to chaos, Quan Chi crushed his head under his boot, killing the cleric of chaos. Enraged that Havik had reneged on their deal, Quan Chi turned his ire to his Oni servants, having Kitana execute Moloch by decapitation, and as Drahmin pleaded for his life, reminding Quan Chi that he had never failed him as his master torturer, Quan Chi raged that he would trade a thousand Drahmins for one Hanzo Hasashi, and used his magic to murder Drahmin, reducing him to a skeleton.

Crushing Drahmin's bones under his heel, Quan Chi stated that the Netherrealm could not afford such failures with Shinnok still imprisoned. Regaining his composure, Quan Chi turned towards the returned revenants of Liu Kang and Kung Lao. Quan Chi explained their plan wasn't a total loss, as Shinnok's amulet was now exposed due to no longer being locked with the Kamidogu.

With both Earthrealm and Outworld on high alert after Havik's rampage, Kung Lao suggested to Quan Chi that they rely on subterfuge for the time being and turned to Shinnok's newest acolyte: D'Vorah.

Mortal Kombat X[]

Quan Chi is first seen leading an army of Netherrealm demons on an all-out assault on Raiden's Sky Temple. Quan Chi summons the revenant versions of Stryker, Sindel, and Kabal to attack Raiden and Fujin, they are able to fend off their attackers. Eventually, Shinnok arrives outside of Earthrealm's Jinsei chamber, intending to corrupt its life-force, to become the ruler of Earthrealm. However, Raiden with help from Johnny Cage successfully imprisons Shinnok inside of his own amulet, causing Quan Chi to retreat to retreat to the Netherrealm and go on the run.

Several years later, Quan Chi is confronted by Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, and a bunch of Special Forces soldiers. Quan Chi fends them off by summoning the still undead Scorpion, Sub-Zero and Jax. Quan Chi is also nearly able to kill Johnny Cage and turn him into a revenant as well, after discovering his ancestral powers from him defeating Shinnok, but is stopped by Raiden and Sonya Blade. Sonya Blade also personally challenges Quan Chi and defeats him. As a result, which severs the link between Quan Chi and Johnny Cage, which Raiden is able to use to reverse the spell Quan Chi placed on Johnny Cage. As an unintended side effect, this also frees Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Jax from Quan Chi's control and restores them to their human form after years of being Quan Chi's slaves. After this, Quan Chi is forced to flee into hiding having almost no resources left.

During Outworld's civil war and with Kotal Kahn keeping Shinnok's amulet, it's revealed that D'Vorah was secretly working for Quan Chi in order to get Shinnok's amulet back, and now D'Vorah is in the perfect position to do so. Unfortunately for Quan Chi, the Special Forces agents learn about this and storm Neatherealm in order to capture Quan Chi and also release the remaining Earthrealm heroes on his side. They are able to capture Quan Chi, but Hanzo and the Shirai Ryu arrives ready to kill Quan Chi, due to learning that Quan Chi was the one truly responsible for his clan and family's death. The Special Forces agents refuse to hand Quan Chi to Scorpion, however, and a fight breaks out. Hanzo and his clan are able to win and get ahold of Quan Chi. He beats Quan Chi mercilessly pushing him to a near-death state. Hanzo then prepares to kill Quan Chi, but just before he can, D'Vorah appears with Shinnok's amulet, and she throws the Amulet to Quan Chi. Just before Quan Chi is decapitated by Hanzo, he chants a spell to resurrect Shinnok.

Powers and Abilities[]

File:Quan Chi's Evil Magic.jpg

The demon sorcerer Quan Chi unleashing and demonstrating his evil magic in Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm.

Quan Chi is the most powerful demon sorcerer of the Netherrealm, proficient in both black magic and necromancy. After gaining the Amulet of Shinnok, he gained a variety of other powers, such as the ability to travel between realms. Like most kombatants, Quan Chi is much stronger, faster, and tougher than the average super-human.

He was able to defeat Shang Tsung who was able to almost defeat Liu Kang the first time they fought. However, he did so with great effort on his part. Before they bretrayed each other, their combined power and skill barely beat Raiden. This along with his necromantic powers make him one of Earthrealm's greatest threats. He also beat Shang Tsung after some considerable effort on his part. Only Shinnok, Shao Kahn, Shang Tsung and Delia can match Quan Chi's skills as a sorcerer.

File:Master Quan Chi.jpg

Quan Chi

Most of Quan Chi's necromantic attacks involve summoning skulls and skeletons, which emit an eerie green glow. He can also summon a defensive wall of skulls, as well as skeletons to do his bidding. Quan Chi's black magic shows itself in the form of his ability to create the Soulando, a large tornado like column of souls, which he can shut off at any time. As his alternate weapon fighting style, Quan Chi wields a pair of Asian broadswords. However, he never uses them during the rebooted timeline. Furthermore, since he bested Shang Tsung in combat, one can assume that he surpasses him in magical powers and skill.

Quan Chi also frequently get his hands on powerful artifacts that can enhance his own powers. Some of these artifacts are Shinnok's Amulet, the Living Weapon, Onaga's undead army, the immortal skull placed on Quan Chi's armor in MKX, his Fortress, etc.

Despite his powers, Quan Chi is nothing more than a coward. Because he sneeks no true loyalty to anyone but himself, he will do anything, even doom the realms, to avoid justice for his crimes. This led to him getting involved with beings who could easily destroy him. Thus, his cunning is also his greatest weakness as few if any, are willing to trust him. Furthermore, while he is skills are remarkable, he struggles against those who are match or even surpass him like Shinnok.

He also remembers events from thousands of years ago very well. He along with Shang Tsung are very intelligent in formulating strategies when they worked together. He also has impressive leadership when in command of the Revenants and all the Netherrealm creatures. Quan Chi can even plan ways to escape after a plan has failed and he even is as deceitful as Shang Tsung.

Trivia[]

  • Two of his fatalities, the Leg Rip and Neck Stretch are Ed Boon's favorite and least favorite fatalities respectively.
  • According to the Konquest mode of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, Quan Chi was the one who proposed the alliance between himself, Shang Tsung, Onaga, and Shao Kahn on the argument that they would not be able to defeat the forces of good otherwise. However, he did this under Shinnok's orders, so as to bring them to the location of Armageddon where Shinnok planed for Daegon to win.
  • His non-canon ending in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon depicts Quan Chi getting so powerful to assault the Heavens, a place which is known to obliterate and destroy all evil beings who enter it, as seen in Scorpion's Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance ending. He also is given the ironic fate of becoming Shinnok's Amulet with his existence becoming a time loop.
  • Quan Chi in the alternate timeline has taken some of Shang Tsung's roles, such as resurrecting Sindel and requesting an invasion of Earthrealm.
  • According to dialogue between Jax Briggs, Sareena and Kenshi in Mortal Kombat X, Quan Chi needs Shinnok as his power source, and showed no signs of betraying his Master.
  • Quan Chi appears as the main villain (alongside Shang Tsung and Shinnok) in the mobile game titled Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, where he at first serves Shinnok in the Netherrealm and helps him retain powerful ancient artefacts so Shinnok can attain ultimate power. However, during the game, Quan Chi instead allies with Shang Tsung and betrays Shinnok for his own ends, as Quan Chi is revealed to rather seek power than ending all life. However, none of this is yet considered canon in the official continuity.
