Haw-haw!
~ Nelson Muntz's signature laugh.

Nelson Mandela Muntz is a major antagonist in the The Simpsons franchise.

He is the head bully at Springfield Elementary School and serves as Bart Simpson's friend and arch-nemesis, and one of the few bullies Bart actually fears, though their relationship usually differs.

He is voiced by Nancy Cartwright, who also voices Bart Simpson, Kearney Zzyzwich, and Ralph Wiggum in the same franchise.

Biography[]

Nelson also tends to act alone, and unlike the other bullies in the series (Jimbo Jones, Dolph and Kearney) he is also more openly hostile towards everyone in town, while the others bullies tend to show some (limited) respect for the adults in town.

Nelson likes to beat up people who make him angry (or just get in his way) and is very well known for taunting people with his now famous laugh. He laughs at the misfortunes of others in almost every appearance he has on the show, and has become so famous for it that it has become a recurring joke on the show.

However, behind his gruff exterior, Nelson has a softer side that has been explored in some episodes, even befriending Bart on rare occasions. However, such friendships are short-lived and he tends to revert to his bullying ways at the end of each episode. Lisa once fell in love with him, which he slowly began to reciprocate. However, they broke up when Lisa realized that he would never be able to stop bullying her. It is implied that he and Lisa have remained friends ever since, as Nelson occasionally opens the door for her and exchanges friendly greetings. He also does favors for her, such as helping her with research on bullies and making fun of Sherri and Terri when they teased Lisa about her weight.

Nelson doing what he does best - "Haw! Haw!"

Nelson lives in a rough part of Springfield in a ramshackle cabin with a neglectful mother who worked several jobs, including working at Hooters', which explains his personality. In later seasons, it was revealed that Nelson had a strong attachment to his father, who disappeared at some point. At times he had delusions and believed he saw his father.

In the episode "Sleeping with the Enemy", Bart helps find Mr. Muntz, who is revealed to have been trapped in a circus sideshow after an allergic reaction to some peanuts. When Nelson was reunited with his family, it seemed likely that he would become a gentler person. However, later episodes forced him to continue the bullying.

Trivia[]

  • Surprisingly, despite his tragic past and the stereotype that bullies get nowhere in life, he turns out to have grown up to be a wealthy businessman.
  • Nelson is of German descent.
  • Despite being male, he is voiced by a female actress, Nancy Cartwright, who also voices Bart and several other students on the show.
  • He drinks beer despite being underage.
