Mortimer Chauncey "Morty" Smith, Sr. is the titular deuteragonist of Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty franchise.
He is the grandson of Rick Prime and son of Jerry and Beth Smith, as well as the younger brother of Summer Smith. He currently lives with an alternate version of his family, however, including a version of his grandfather from Dimension C-137. He is easily pressured into doing bad and often outright villainous deeds by his grandfather or other influences which can end up putting other people in danger.
He was voiced by the series co-creator Justin Roiland from season 1 to 6, who voiced all versions of Rick Sanchez in the same series, the Earl of Lemongrab in Adventure Time and Blendin Blandin in Gravity Falls. From season 7 onwards, he is voiced by Harry Belden.
Appearance[]
Morty is a 14-year-old boy with white skin and brown hair on his perfectly round head. He commonly wears a yellow shirt, blue jeans, and white shoes.
Personality[]
Morty is a good-natured, impressionable and somewhat malleable boy which can cause him to be somewhat easily manipulated, especially by his grandfather, Rick. Unlike the nihilistic Rick, Morty is shown to be more of a voice of reason by comparison. Despite being nowhere near as intelligent as Rick, Morty has been the one to save the day when Rick had failed to, or to be the one to fix a mess that Rick started.
As the show progresses, Morty proves to be an independent character when he wants to be, rather than just a sidekick. Much like how Rick is considered "The Rickest Rick" (meaning that he hates governments, even if they are made of other Ricks from other dimensions), Morty is considered "The Mortiest Morty", as he once saved a bunch of interdimensional Mortys from being imprisoned.
Despite being just a teenager, Morty has showed qualities of a strong leader, as well as being a responsible father, as he briefly raised an alien child. Morty is able to grasp complex concepts, such as the multiverse, and the use of Rick's high-tech inventions and weaponry.
As the show progressed, Morty began to show a more selfish and villainous side. One of the biggest examples of this is in the episode "Edge of Tomorty: Rick Die Rickpeat", Morty had caused massive amounts of death and destruction because he had a "death crystal", which is a crystal that shows the many ways a person can die. Morty had committed these acts for the sole purpose of supposedly wanting to die with Jessica, his crush, as the crystal showed this as one of his fates.
Villainous Acts[]
- "Rick Potion #9": He indirectly caused a Cronenberg outbreak by trying to roofie his crush, Jessica, with a love potion, though to be fair this is partially Rick's fault for not telling him the effects of the potion. He doesn't even try to check up on his original family, ask if they were okay, or tell Rick to let them on this ship.
- "Look Who's Purging Now": He murders a lighthouse keeper out of anger then goes on a murder rampage killing even some innocent survivors. Rick reveals that he did this because of chemicals inside some chocolate bars he was given at the beginning of the episode, but at the end, it's revealed that the chocolate bars were new flavours that did not contain these chemicals, implying that Morty's actions were his own.
- "The Rickshank Rickdemption": He shows he is willing to angrily murder Rick for insulting him. He would've been successful in this endeavor had his gun been fake, which Morty didn't know.
- "The Whirly Dirly Conspiracy": He turns Summer's ex-boyfriend, Ethan, into a grotesque mutant just for breaking up with Summer and causing her to go on an insecure rampage. While what Ethan was certainly cruel, he definitely didn't deserve that fate.
- "Morty's Mind Blowers": it's revealed that:
- He unintentionally caused a teacher to commit suicide by getting him fired due to claiming he's from the moon.
- He created a magnet that absorbed every ginger female in a 10-mile radius.
- He accidentally causes an alien to lose his faith which causes him to go to hell.
- "Edge of Tomorty: Rick Die Rickpeat": After obtaining the death crystals, he uses their guidance to end up with Jessica, going on a massive murder spree in the process to do so.
- "Mort Dinner Rick Andre": He massacred many Narnians to get wine so he can impress Jessica, though they attacked him first due to a misunderstanding.
- "Rickdependence Spray": His masturbation caused the rise of mutated sperm monsters (including accidentally procreating with Summer and creating their son Naruto) and he did everything he could to hide the blame from himself, refusing to take responsibility for the incident.
- "Rickdefending Your Mort": It was shown that Morty left an immortal Churro on a deserted planet just because he got bored of him.
- In the same episode, he was complicit with Rick regarding experiments on dead bodies in a cemetery.
Trivia[]
- In January 2023, Justin Roiland was fired by Adult Swim for his domestic abuse allegations, yet Rick and Morty has been confirmed to continue without him, and Morty is now voiced by Harry Belden.
- He often calls Rick (His grandpa) by his real name most of the time. Which is obviously disrespectful.
