“ | A new playmate! It's been so long... | „ |
~ Mommy Long Legs' introduction and her famous quote. |
“ | It was always so sad to see the kids go. They called me "Mommy" because I was the closest thing they ever had to one, but they'd come for games… and never come back. They left Mommy to die alone. Mommy didn't deserve that. But you… you worked here, so if anyone deserves to die alone... it's you. | „ |
~ Mommy Long Legs to the player. |
“ | AHHHHHH! I ASKED YOU TO PLAY FAIR, AND YOU CHEATED! I HATE CHEATERS! Now, we're going to play ONE. LAST. GAME! It's called hide… and… SEEEEEEEEEEK! | „ |
~ Mommy Long Legs' villainous breakdown as she foolishly accuses the player of cheating despite that she unfairly cheated first and prepares to kill the player. |
Marie Payne, also known as Experiment-1222: Mommy Long Legs, is a major antagonist in the indie horror franchise Poppy Playtime, serving as the main antagonist of the first game's second chapter, Fly In A Web, and a playable Monster in the multiplayer prequel Project: Playtime.
She is a sadistically playful, pink spider-like toy created by Playtime CO. in 1991. One of her most notable features are her limbs, which are extremely elastic and bendable. Her true identity is that of a human orphan that was experimented on and transformed into a toy by the employees at Playtime, resulting in her becoming aggressive towards them.
She was voiced by Elsie Lovelock in her first villainous role, who also provided Charlie Morningstar's singing voice in the Hazbin Hotel pilot, and voiced Uzi Doorman in Murder Drones, Evelyn Claythorne in Meta Runner, and the Gloink Queen in The Amazing Digital Circus.
Appearance[]
Mommy Long Legs is shown in the game to be the second-largest creature to date. Mommy is a pink spider-like toy designed to have magenta, noodle-like hair styled into a high ponytail and wearing a one-piece magenta dress and a blue beaded necklace. While the bottom part would normally be the spider's abdomen, it is instead represented as Mommy's waist, while her actual stomach right above is long and skinny. She has green eyes, long arms, and long legs. She wears pink shoes and a band around her hair. Her hair is magenta, and she has pink lipstick on her mouth. She can hang like a spider, and she is about two meters tall when crouching. The revelation of her skin in the spinning gears when she dies, as well as the saliva in her mouth whenever she kills and consumes the player, heavily hint at her being organic.
When agitated, like Huggy Wuggy, Mommy's appearance changes into something much creepier. Her fingers begin to elongate like her limbs, her eyes widen and her pupils dilate to the point where it's almost entirely black, and her string-like hair becomes sporadic and bends at various points.
Assuming Marie was the child seen in the Chapter 3 trailer, she had light blond hair and wore a sleeveless white shirt.
Personality[]
Mommy is shown to be "happy" when encountering the player in the game, as she expresses, "A new playmate! It's been so long!", while keeping a creepy, somewhat vicious expression on her face.
She is also shown to be quite deceptive, as despite her continuously reassuring that she would let the player leave the factory if they played her games, it is heavily implied that she wouldn't hold up her end of the bargain and instead kill them.
While she stated that she doesn't like cheaters, she ironically (and hypocritically) rigged at least most of the games from the start by making most of them virtually impossible to win, making her somewhat hypocritical. The examples are down below:
- In "Musical Memory", while the game originally only had four colors, Mommy Long Legs tampered with the mechanics so the program added more colors and even mathematical symbols to the game in order to increase the difficulty. Near the end of the game, she even doubled the panels and ramped up the speed of which the correct orders were displayed to make it impossible to win.
- In "Whack-a-Wuggy", Mommy Long Legs gave a poor lighting in the area and removed the strings in order to make the player have trouble seeing where the Huggies emerged.
- In "Statues", the exit was blocked by debris (whether by Mommy herself or by the ravages of time is unclear), making escape through the original exit impossible.
Though sadistic towards the employees for experimenting on her, she is mentioned to be kind towards children. This is likely because she knows that they are innocent, they treat her very well, and that they are in no way responsible for her condition or situation. Although she is also sympathetic towards her fellow experiments (likely because she knows that they are in the same boat that she is), she is not above killing them if they fail her, such as when she kills Bunzo and the Mini Huggies off-screen for failing to kill the player.
Despite her brutal and murderous nature, she is not completely fearless, such as when she screams in terror as her body is crushed in a grinder in her final moments. It is known that she fears one particular experiment, due to him being one of the most dangerous experiments (if not the most dangerous experiment) ever created in the factory, confirmed when she yells at the player that he will make her body a part of his should she die. Her fear somehow comes true when a hand (confirmed to be his hand when CatNap died) drags her remains away. It is unknown about if she was afraid of CatNap for following the one she feared & killing "heretics" (those who opposed him), or was angry at him for being the catalyst for her current predicament by giving her nightmares when she was still a human.
Biography[]
Past[]
Marie Payne was an orphan taken in by Playtime CO's Playcare. While living at the orphanage, she and several other orphans were introduced to the toy, CatNap. CatNap was designed to secrete poppy gas from the esophagus, which while non-lethal, sedated the kids and made them behave. Yet of the children, Marie's exposure to the gas was so severe that she went into a nervous breakdown from a nightmare just after lights out on February 5 of an unknown year (possibly 1988 or 1989).
In 1991, Marie was used as a subject in the Bigger Bodies Initiative and turned into Experiment-1222, Mommy Long Legs. Her trauma from being brutally tortured and experimented on, presumably by the scientist, had caused her to be very hostile and aggressive towards the staff. However by contrast, she acted motherly and warm towards the other experiments and children. This made her the perfect fit to run the Game Station, and she was transferred soon after.
On August 8, 1995, the Prototype would orchestrate the Hour of Joy; leading the living toys to rebel against Playtime CO. and take over the factory, killing all the staff in the process. Mommy Long Legs happily took part in this event, reaching down and snatching up staff members with her long limbs, pulling them up to her, and likely devouring them.
Chapter 2: Fly In A Web[]
While roaming the halls of the Game Station, she came across Poppy where she uses her stretchy hand to abduct Poppy and drag her down the hole to the Game Station. The Player jumped in after her and arrived to the entrance of the station. Right as they tried to use their GrabPack's red hand to open the door, Mommy grabbed the hand and stole it. She then crawled down from the ceiling, fully revealing herself while holding Poppy hostage. She informed the player that instead of just giving the player the train code to escape as Poppy wanted to do, they will have to play one of her games for the code. Mommy then instructed them to head to Musical Memory, and threatened to tear the player limb-from-limb and eat their organs alive should they break the rules. Musical Memory as its name implies, was a memory game which required the Player to input color patterns that correspond to the ones briefly shown to them on a screen. As they played, Bunzo Bunny would slowly lower towards them on a rope, and would be reeled back if they input a right pattern, or lower quicker if they input a wrong one. After imprisoning Poppy with her webs, she arrived to Musical Memory herself to start the game. Before starting, she wondered how excited Bunzo was to play, as well as eat, since nobody had played in such a long time. When the player successfully entered round 5, the game became impossible to play. Yet the round also featured a cease button, allowing the player to turn off the game. Since they had technically won, she gave them only one part of the train code so she could force the player into another game. After the player left, Mommy attacked and killed Bunzo as punishment for his failure, leaving his corpse webbed to the ceiling of the station.
The Player was then directed to the second game, Whack-A-Wuggy, where they are required to hit the Huggies with their GrabPack to prevent them from crawling out of their tunnels to attack them. Before starting the game, Mommy tried to frighten the Player by telling them the Huggies no longer had their strings on them to pull them back as a countermeasure. To her disappointment, the Player still managed to complete the game. Though disappointed, she pretended to be proud and handed them another part of the code. Similar to Bunzo, after the player left the game, Mommy killed the Huggies and left their corpses webbed to the ceiling.
The third and final game, Statues, was a Red Light/Green Light type game with a chase by PJ Pug-A-Pillar. Before starting the third game, Mommy explained that the children used to call her "Mommy," as they shared a close bond with her. She then revealed that she knew the player was an ex-employee and claimed that they deserved to be trapped in the factory for their role in experimenting on the children. During the chase, the Player found that the exit has been blocked by rubble, meaning they were never supposed to win this game. To their luck, there was a hanging bar above the window of the employee observatory. Using their GrabPack, they grabbed the bar and swung themself into the observatory before escaping down a hole to the service tunnels. Realizing they escaped, Mommy called for them, claiming they won the game and that she'll give them the code. Yet after being continuously ignored, she became enraged and threatened she would find them.
Mommy successfully tracked the Player down to the Service Tunnels. Upon finding them, she accused them of cheating and declared they would play one final "game" of Hide and Seek. As she counted down from 10, she let the Player run away. After evading her several times, the Player finally lured her into leaping at an industrial grinder, which latched onto her hand and crushed her to death, after which a strange hand appears from under a door and drags away her remains.
Chapter 3: A Deep Sleep[]
Mommy is not seen in full in this chapter, though one of her limbs can be seen on a VHS tape that Poppy plays near the end of the chapter, detailing what occurred during the Hour of Joy. In the Game Station, one of Mommy's arms extends and grabs to Playtime Co. employees and pulls them upwards, off the screen. It is implied by Poppy that, like the other victims of the Hour of Joy, that they were devoured by Mommy when all of the toys and monsters went mad from hunger and malnourishment.
Catnap's shrine to the Prototype has a limb similar to that of Mommy, or at least one of the Long Legs family's limbs, on it.

Trivia[]
- Mommy's appearance could be a potential reference to Betty Spaghetty.
- When her body is being cut by the shredder, she dies immediately when her abdomen is crushed. This implies that her physiology is more spider than human, as real spiders have their heart and lungs located in the abdomen.
- Originally, Mommy Long Legs was scripted two die in two different ways:
- An animation concept by MADELINE showed that Mommy's head would have been crushed instead of her stomach. The idea was scrapped most likely since it was far more scary and brutal.[1]
- Her other death would have been much more different. In this concept, Mommy would have stuck her head in the furnace the player had hidden in when hiding from her in the final game, only for the door to close on her and for the furnace to turn on, resulting in her head being engulfed in flames. The reason for this death being unused is unknown, but it could be assumed that the chase sequence was much shorter in this version.
- Both these concepts involved her dying with her head being destroyed. Ironically, in the final game her head is left intact.
- The death that involves the furnace would be classified by the one of the story board directors that the real death that involved the furnace to be not official.
- Both these concepts involved her dying with her head being destroyed. Ironically, in the final game her head is left intact.
- In the game code, it is revealed that there's an alternate ending scene that when the Protagonist found Mommy Long Legs's secret lair, Huggy Wuggy was stuck at the top, implying Mommy saved Huggy. Mommy would later appear, then explain how she saved Huggy, and she would later jumpscare the player and a Game Over. Even though this does not happen in the game, Huggy Wuggy is still considered to be alive without Mommy rescuing him.
- Poppy retconned this in Chapter 3: Deep Sleep, saying that the player killed Huggy Wuggy.
- Mommy's real name is Marie Payne. She was the first toy whose human name is confirmed, with CatNap's real name being confirmed second.
- In the beginning, Mommy has threatened that she'll devour the Protagonist's insides while they are still alive. Ironically, her death included having her insides crushed while she was still alive.
- Said threat could also be a reference to how real-life spiders inject their prey with venom that liquifies their insides before consuming them.
- She initially talks in the third person by referring to herself as "Mommy" multiple times. After becoming enraged, she talks in the first person.
- This is the reverse of how crazy people (like Mommy) usually refer to themselves in the first person, & then transition to talking in the third person.
- Mommy's death via grinder is ironic as despite being a giant spider she was still squished.
- This was also foreshadowed by a poster warning users not to stick themselves or their GrabPacks in any heavy machinery lest they desire to be dismembered (which happens to Mommy via shredder).
- A few deleted versions of Mommy Long Legs' death were considered, one shows her head getting crushed by the grinder as opposed to her body in the final game. The developers scrapped the idea due to "too much graphic violence", another similarly involves her head, where her head gets stuck in a furnace which melts her head.
- The latter death was foreshadowed in Mommy Long Legs' commercial at the start of the game. The commercial ended with a disclaimer text "Don't expose elastic-plastic to extreme heat or freezing temperatures." Likely meaning the commercial was made with this ending in mind.
