Colonel Miles Quaritch is the main antagonist of the 2009 science-fiction film, Avatar. He is the chief of security and colonel of the RDA who directs military operations on Pandora in order to obtain the Unobtanium ore under the leadership of Parker Selfridge. His thirst for war and his warlike behavior will lead him to want to annihilate the Na'vi population in order to achieve his objectives. He is also Jake Sully's archnemesis.
He was portrayed by Stephen Lang.
History[]
As soon as he arrived on Pandora, Quaritch had already killed Na'vi children, starting war against them and the RDA. When Jake Sully arrives on Pandora, Quaritch makes an agreement with him which consists in infiltrating the scientists for him and in exchange he will give him back the possibility of walking. However during his mission in the skin of Avatar, Jake becomes attached to the Omatikaya and moves away from his agreement with Quaritch who enrages. The military leader also plays a recording of Jake which reveals that the Na'vi will not budge from the Hometree and that there is, therefore, no pacifist solution to obtain the Unobtanium with them around.
Under Selfridge's agreement, Quaritch deploys his military forces for the slaughter of the Hometree although he is slowed down when the businessman gives Jake a deadline to get the Na'vi to leave in time. Then, he arrests and locks Jake's group but they manage to escape and Quaritch manages to shoot Grace in the stomach and she dies moments later. But days later when he believed him dead, Quaritch notices that Jake has created an army of Omatikayas to overthrow Quaritch's forces. A war then breaks out and both camps suffer a lot of loss including Trudy killed by Quaritch who will fire on her ship.
While Quaritch's flying machine is on fire, he jumps to the ground aboard an AMP and fights Neytiri and kills her thanator. By wanting to destroy the laboratory where Jake was, he confronts the latter and takes over. Getting ready to finish him off, Quaritch is killed with two arrows thrown by Neytiri and he collapses to the ground.
