Miguel O'Hara, also known as Spider-Man 2099, is the secondary antagonist of the Spider-Verse trilogy, serving as a minor character in the 2018 animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and the secondary antagonist of its 2023 sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. He is set to appear in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

He is a Spider-Man of Irish and Latin descent from a parallel universe, who found a way to safely travel the multiverse. Upon finding this out, he attempted to take the place of an alternate version of himself, inadvertently destroying that timeline.

From that point on, he founded the Spider-Society, a group of Spider-People from across the multiverse, in order to stop anomalies (villains accidentally teleported across the Multiverse owing to Kingpin's collider) and keep canon events (events which happen in every universe) intact.

He is voiced by Oscar Issac who also portrayed Apocalypse in X-Men Apocalypse.

Personality

In the post-credits scene for Into the Spider-Verse, Miguel's personality was not too dissimilar from a typical Spider-Man, being laid back and continuously making jokes.

In the aftermath of destroying an entire universe though, Miguel become dead-serious about everything, and is even pointed out by Peter to be the sole Spider-Man who doesn't make jokes. He is extremely ruthless and uncompromising in his intentions. He is shown to have a deep disgust for Miles owing to him being an anomaly, with his mere existence being a mistake. He is also the most brutal Spider-Man when it comes down to it.

Biography

Miguel's backstory prior to becoming Spider-Man is left somewhat of a mystery. He originates from a futuristic universe in the city of Nueva York, and the spider that bit him affected him slightly different, with him shown to inject himself with goo which presumably affects his powers. He also lacks the Spider-Sense typical of Spider-Men.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

In the post-credits scene for the original film, a slimmer Miguel and his A.I. Lyla converse about the events of the film. Lyla assures Miguel that the universe didn't collapse, before he asks Lyla if the "goober" is finished. Lyla reveals the goober to Miguel: A watch allowing multiversal travel without glitching. Miguel then travels to Earth-67, a universe in the style of the 1967 Spider-Man show. There, he gets into an argument with that universes's Spider-Man, who is unaware of the situation, to the confusion of a police officer and J. Jonah Jameson.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

At some point in between films, Miguel discovered a parallel universe identical to his own with one exception: That universe's Miguel is dead, and his family is alive. Upon discovering this, Miguel opted to replace his counterpart and spend time with his family. This proved to be a mistake, as the entire universe ended up collapsing, to Miguel's horror. This taught Miguel the necessity of "canon events", events which occur in every universe and which must happen, lest the multiverse fall apart.

Miguel would also form the Spider-Society, an organization of Spider-Men from across the multiverse to assist him in his goals. In conjunction with preserving canon events, the Society was also tasked with capturing anomalies, villains who were teleported to universes besides their own. This is explained to be because of the damage Kingpin's collider caused to the multiverse, ripping holes in the multiverse allowing villains to break through.

Miguel first appears in the film as he appears in the dimension of Spider-Gwen, where he helps her to fight a renaissance variant of Vulture. He is assisted by Jessica Drew, a pregnant Spider-Woman, and ultimately manages to capture him. During the fight, Gwen's father, police captain George Stacy, discovers his daughter's identity, but still attempts to arrest her. Miguel stops him, and offers Gwen to join the Spider-Society, which she accepts. However, he forbids her from seeing Miles Morales, as he is technically the original anomaly, as the spider that bit him was from another dimension, meaning he wasn't supposed to be Spider-Man.

When a supervillain from Miles's universe known as Spot accidentally teleports to a Lego universe, that universes's Spider-Man calls Miguel about the anomaly, and Miguel opts to send Gwen to Miles's universe to track down the Spot. However, Gwen gets sidetracked spending time with Miles, allowing the Spot to regain his powers and teleport to another dimension. Gwen then follows the Spot to Mumbattan, accompanied by Miles. Ultimately, the Spot goes inside of that universes's collider, giving him nearly unlimited power and allowing him to teleport back home. The ensuing destruction leads to Inspector Singh, a police captain in that world, nearly dying. Miles saves him, disrupting the canon and causing the universe to start collapsing. Members of the Spider-Society arrive to attempt to patch the hole up, while Miles, Gwen, and Hobie Brown go the HQ to meet with Miguel.

There, Miguel explains the concept of canon events to Miles, and that one of the canon events is that a police captain close to Spider-Man dies attempting to save a child, hence the universe's collapse. Miles also realizes that since his father is about to become police captain, he is about to die. Miguel reveals his backstory to Miles, and attempts to imprison him. However, Miles uses his Venom powers to escape, causing Miguel and the entire Spider-Society to chase after Miles, alongside Gwen and Miles's mentor, Peter B. Parker. In the finale of the chase, Miguel reveals to Miles that he is an anomaly, whose existence has led to Spot existing, dubbing him a mistake and a kid who doesn't know the consequences of his decisions. Miles, however, reveals that his plan was to lure the society away from the teleporter, and electrocutes Miguel before escaping back.

Miguel arrives just as the procedure is beginning, and attempts to tear into the portal, only for Miles to escape regardless. Miguel becomes furious, and is berated by Gwen for his deranged approach. Miguel then sends Gwen back home to her dimension, deeming her a liability. He then goes to Miles's dimension, accompanied by Drew and Ben Reilly. Unbeknownst to them, however, since the spider that bit him was from another dimension, Miles has actually gone to the spider's dimension, the sole universe without a Spider-Man.

Powers and Abilities

Powers

• Spider physiology: Unlike other spider-men, Miguel gained his superpowers trying to reverse his body's chemistry to before he was drugged by rapture (a highly addictive drug). His Experiment was sabotaged by his former supervisor who enlaced spider genetics with Miguel's base line. Miguel survived, gaining instant Spider Abilities such as vampire like fangs and and sharp talons at his toes and finger tips. It's also hinted that Miguel needs to consistently dose himself with artificial "radioactive spider bites", though the reason for so has not been addressed yet. Unlike other Spider-Men, Miguel does not have the spider sense.
  • Talons: Miguel is shown to have extremely sharp talons that can rip through metal and spider webs. He can summon his talons on command and retract them by touching his own skin. Miguel's talons can slice through guns, swords, and flesh.
  • Venomous Fangs: Miguel's fangs can deliver a venomous bite, capable of temporarily immobilizing his opponents.
  • Superhuman strength: Miguel possesses enhanced strength, allowing him to lift heavy objects and overpower his opponents in combat.
  • Superhuman healing: Miguel's accelerated healing factor allows him to recover from injuries at an increased rate, healing wounds and broken bones more rapidly than a normal human.
  • Wall-Crawling: Like other Spider-People, Miguel has the ability to cling to and crawl on walls and ceilings, mainly using his talons, giving him enhanced mobility and the ability to navigate vertical surfaces with ease.
  • Superhuman agility: He has incredible agility, reflexes, and acrobatic skills, enabling him to move swiftly and gracefully in combat and navigate through various environments effortlessly.
  • Superhuman Durability: Miguel's body has enhanced durability, allowing him to withstand physical impacts and attacks to a greater extent than an ordinary human. He can endure blows, falls, and other forms of physical trauma without sustaining severe injuries.
  • Superhuman Speed: Miguel possesses enhanced speed, enabling him to move at incredibly fast velocities. This enhanced speed allows him to outpace regular humans and react swiftly in combat situations.
