Welcome back, Charlotte.
~ Michael Afton after he successfully managed to free Charlotte's soul, so she could unintentionally help him complete his plan and whom he can brainwash.
Michael Afton: Knock knock. Hiya, sis.
Vanessa: Michael?
Mike Schmidt: Vanessa, what the hell is going on?
Michael Afton: Oh, let me guess. She never told you about me. That's my sister for ya. (chuckling) She always was a little selective with the truth. I'm Michael. Michael Afton. I am so pleased to finally meet you.
Vanessa: Leave them alone, Michael. They haven't done anything wrong.
Michael Afton: I think our father might strongly disagree with that.
Mike Schmidt: Your father's dead.
Michael Afton: Yeah. But I'm here to continue his legacy. Just in time for FazFest.
Mike Schmidt: That was you.
Michael Afton: Well, your aunt was the one who rekindled everyone's interest in Freddy's, but... I gotta admit, I
did add fuel to the fire. (chuckling) It's the perfect cover! I mean... we're all just gonna blend right in!
~ Michael revealing himself and his motive to Vanessa, Abby and Mike.
Michael Afton: Half of this town will be dead by morning.
Vanessa Shelly: You can't do this, this isn't a game. Michael... you can have a normal life, we could have a normal life.
Michael Afton: Vanessa... is that what you thought? You thought you could just trade us in, betray us, get yourself a shiny new life? You are his child. You have a purpose. We will always be his. Come home.
Vanessa Shelly: I am home. (walks to Mike and Abby)
Michael Afton: (seems concerned at first, but after a while he smiles and chuckles mockingly) Doesn't matter to me, anyway.
(to the Toy Animatronics) Yeah... Break their bones. Crush them.
~ Michael Afton to his sister, wanting her to realize that she will never break free from the Afton family circle and also to have her join his side, but as she refuses, he orders the Toy Animatronics to kill her, Mike and Abby without remorse.

Michael Afton is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside The Marionette) of Universal Pictures' Five Nights at Freddy's film series, based on the video game franchise of the same name.

He is the brother of Vanessa Shelly and the son of serial killer William Afton, who founded Fazbear Entertainment and was responsible for the murders of several children at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Place during the 1980s.

After his father was killed by the springlocks inside the Yellow Rabbit suit, he became determined to carry on William's legacy out of a desire of pure, sadistic pleasure. He exploited and fueled Charlotte Emily’s soul anger toward the adults, who didn't help her when she saved a small boy from William, manipulating her and using her as a tool to achieve his goals.

With her help, he controlled the Toy Animatronics, which were meant to kill off many of the town’s residents during FazFest. After his plan fell apart when the Original Animatronics destroyed the Toy versions, Michael has escaped and ran away into the unknown, most likely plotting revenge against Mike and Vanessa.

He was portrayed by Freddy Carter, who also played Jason Ripper in Pennyworth.

Biography[]

Past[]

Michael Afton was born to William Afton and an unnamed mother, and was the younger brother of Vanessa Afton, who later became a police officer in her adulthood. It is unknown what kind of relationship Michael had with his father, where he was before and during the events of the first movie, or whether he was already a cold, heartless person even before his father’s death. However, considering the fact that Vanessa did not tell Mike about his existence, it can be assumed that Michael was either away from the town or in hiding, knowing that at any moment he could be confronted by his sister.

2001 re-emergence[]

At some point, Michael Afton re-emerged to continue his father's legacy. He became a night guard at the original Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, aiming to use his position to further his malicious goals. While working as a night guard, he became more closely acquainted with all the animatronics, including Toy Freddy, Toy Bonnie, Toy Chica, Toy Foxy (Mangle), Balloon Boy]], and the Marionette, which was possessed by the soul of Charlotte Emily, his father’s first victim. Discovering the depth of Charlotte’s hatred and desire for revenge against the adults, he decided to fuel and exploit her anger so that, together with her, he could control the Toy Animatronics, which were meant to serve as killing machines in the town. While Charlotte wanted to do it out of a need for vengeance and punishment of adults, Michael was doing it for pure pleasure and out of a desire to be as “brilliant” as his father, proving that human emotions meant nothing to him and that there was nothing he would not do.

However, knowing that Charlotte was unpredictable, he did not intend to release her soul on his own, choosing instead to wait for the right opportunity. That opportunity came when, due to the legends surrounding Fazbear’s, renewed interest in the unsolved murders led to the organization of the 2002 FazFest. Michael decided to lure Lisa, Alex, and Rob to the original Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza location - a team of paranormal investigators who film Spectral Scoopers.

Five Nights at Freddy's 2[]

When Lisa, Alex, and Rob arrived at the pizzeria in their van, they initially shared urban legends about the place. At that moment, Michael suddenly appeared in front of Alex, startling him. Lisa was convinced that he was the same man from the phone call who had invited them to tour the location, whom she remembered as “Mike.” Afton, however, asked them to address him as “Michael” (most likely because he did not want to be associated with Mike Schmidt, whom he hated for having a role in his father’s death. It is also very likely that Scott Cawthon did this to make it clear to viewers that Mike Schmidt and Michael Afton are two separate characters in the film universe, unlike in the game lore).

Michael leads the team inside the pizzeria, guiding them through its various attractions one by one. As he begins listing them, Lisa mentions the Marionette and talks about how it “would come out of this trapdoor on the stage and direct the other animatronics during performances.” Michael confirms all of this, adding that the Marionette truly was “one of a kind,” that it did so using a “wireless signal,” and that they were never able to replicate anything like it. Even at this point, Michael was already beginning to indirectly reveal his fascination with the animatronic he would later use as a pawn.

As he continues the tour, he shows the team the toy versions of Freddy, Bonnie, and Chica. When Lisa asks about Foxy, Michael explains that it was heavily damaged by children during the “take-apart, put-back-together” attraction and how they can be "so heartless". At the same moment, Lisa hears the Marionette’s music box, and when she asks about it, Michael tells her that if she lets so, then the pizzeria would prey on her and her friends imagination. At this point, the group splits up: Lisa decides to follow the trail of the music box, Rob begins exploring the water corner (which at the same time he accidentally falls during the process), while Alex, guided by Michael, continues filming.

When Lisa goes down to the basement and discovers the room from which the music is coming, she picks up the music box and turns it off. At that moment, the Marionette emerges from the box, scaring and possessing Lisa. When Alex and Michael hear Lisa’s screams, Michael begins to smirk and chuckle mockingly, knowing that his plan to lure someone to “do the dirty work for him” has succeeded. Alex notices Michael’s demeanor and asks, “What did you do?”, but Michael doesn’t answer, continuing to smile sadistically; at that moment, his true nature is revealed. As Alex runs to rescue Lisa, he is caught and brutally ripped into pieces by Mangle. Michael watches all of this, clearly astonished by what his creation is capable of. At the same time, Rob also dies, killed underwater by the Marionette dolls.

Shortly after, Michael decides to go down to the Marionette’s room, where he finds Lisa possessed by Charlotte’s soul. When she charges at him, he quickly runs out of the restaurant to the outside. Once outside, Michael “welcomes back Charlotte,” smirking sadistically, knowing that with his new pawn, he is now able to fully carry out his plans. Michael was not seen for most of the film until the third act, likely watching from hiding as his animatronics began wreaking havoc on the town (although up to that point, they had not been particularly effective, since the only victim before the reveal was Professor Berg, killed by Toy Chica, while the rest managed to survive with the help of Mike and Vanessa, turning off the animatronics).

During the climax, after Mike Schmidt managed to calm Charlotte's spirit with her music box, which released his sister Abby, he, Abby and Vanessa want to run away. However, they are surrounded by the Toy Animatronics that are on once again. At this point, Michael appears in the house, revealing himself and his familial connection to Vanessa, which frightens Mike. Michael admits that he had been manipulating Charlotte's spirit and hopes to continue his father's legacy. Michael also reveals that the FazFest organization is his doing, and while he acknowledges that it was Jane, Mike and Abby’s aunt, who reignited interest in Freddy Fazbear, he considers himself the one who truly revived his father’s legacy and sees himself as its rightful successor.

When he reveals that “half of this town will be dead by morning,” Vanessa tries to convince him that what he is doing is wrong and urges him to stop and try to live a normal life, away from their father’s influence. Michael, however, holds a completely opposite view, believing that it was Vanessa who made a grave mistake by trying to “erase the Afton family legacy” from herself. When Vanessa refuses Michael’s demand to “come home,” he initially pretends to be concerned, but moments later he chuckles and makes it clear that he could not care less about his sister’s opinion. Realizing that Vanessa is not his ally, he orders the Toy Animatronics to brutally kill her and the Schmidts, without mercy.

His plan, however, is ruined when the Original Animatronics arrive at the house and systematically destroy all of the Toy Animatronics, after Mike asked them earlier to help Abby. Knowing that all of his pawns are now disabled (Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Mangle destroyed, and the Marionette put to sleep), Michael decides to flee, but is knocked down by Jeremiah outside the house, who enters inside and finds the Schmidts and Vanessa. Michael, however, is left unsupervised, allowing him to escape, leaving only his badge behind. It is unknown where he fled or what he intends to do, but it is highly likely that he will try to exact revenge on Mike, Abby, and Vanessa for foiling his plan.

Personality[]

As the son of William Afton, Michael is a sadistic, cruel, arrogant, and sociopathic person who is obsessed with continuing William's legacy of murder. His insistence on being called “Michael” rather than “Mike” is not a simple correction, but rather a a declaration of identity in the shadow of his father and a way to separate himself from Mike Schmidt, while fully embracing the family’s legacy of violence and manipulation. He is also highly skilled at manipulation and deception, which he uses to orchestrate events and control people, including his younger sister Vanessa for a time. Michael is also very fascinated with the Marionette from the start, whom he doesn’t see as a a victim, but as a tool and a pawn to be used, an extension of his will rather than a haunted soul. Michael mercilessly fueled and manipulated Charlotte’s anger toward adults, awakening the killer nature within her. This shows that he is completely cold-hearted and calculating, capable of exploiting the soul of a broken child for his own purposes.

Michael is highly intelligent and uses tactical analysis and robotics knowledge to further his goals as a serial killer and the new heir of Fazbear Entertainment. His manipulative nature is at the core of who he is. Michael never acts impulsively; every his' move is calculated. He takes pleasure in watching events unfold according to his plan, mostly letting others unknowingly do the dirty work for him. His quiet smirks, ironic warnings, and detached observations reveal him as a person who enjoys mastery over both people and animatronics. He is obsessed with upholding William Afton's legacy and desires to use the Toy animatronics and Charlotte's spirit to kill. He also displays a strong sense of arrogance and egotism, as suggested by his confident demeanor and his belief in his own superiority and mission.

Unlike his father, who often acted under the influence of intense emotions and rage, Michael is characterized by an almost inhuman calm and a lack of impulsivity. While William’s actions were driven by sadism and impulsive fits of fury, Michael operates in a completely clinical and emotionless manner, treating violence as a precise element of a complex plan. Where William allowed himself emotional outbursts, Michael maintains absolute discipline, making his actions more predictable to himself, yet far more difficult for others to stop.

Unlike his video game counterpart, who feels immense guilt and ultimately redeems himself to become a hero bent on stopping his father once and for all, here he is depicted as a cold-hearted and calculating serial killer who shows no remorse for his actions, only frustration when his plans are hindered. He even uses his skills in disguise and stealth to blend in and carry out his crimes undetected, even working as a night guard at the pizzeria.

Michael Afton: Welcome to Freddy's.
Lisa: You're cool if we record everything?
Michael Afton: Of course. That's why you're here, isn't it?
Alex: (chuckles) No way! They had a boat ride?
Michael Afton: This restaurant had a lot of unique features.
Lisa: Like the Marionette.
Michael Afton: You did your homework. Yeah. The Marionette truly was one of a kind.
Rob: What's "the Marionette"?
Lisa: The Marionette would come out of this trap-door on the stage and direct the other animatronics during performances.
Michael Afton: That's right, using a wireless signal. The technology was way ahead of its time, but... they never made another one.
~ Michael shows Lisa, Alex and Rob around the original Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, also forshadowing his fascination with the Marionette, whom he later uses as a pawn.
Alex: They look brand-new.

Michael Afton: Foxy was involved in a failed take-apart-put-back-together attraction, and was never quite the same again. Kids can be so heartless.
~ Michael about Foxy being replaced with its toy version named Mangle.
Lisa: You guys heard that? It's like... the music...
Michael Afton: Fair warning: this place will prey on your imagination if you let it.
~ Michael warns Lisa about the uniques of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, foreshadowing the upcoming murderous events.

Trivia[]

  • Unlike his video games counterpart, he and Mike Schmidt are separate characters in the film:
    • The video games reveal Michael Afton and Mike Schmidt to be one and the same, with Afton taking on the name Schmidt to hide his connection to his father's crimes and burn down the Freddy Fazbear Pizzeria chain to free the souls of the Missing Children.
    • This incarnation is a full-fledged villain bent on following his father's footsteps, while his games' counterpart was once a bully until he accidentally kills his brother and later redeems himself by stopping his father and his actions, sacrificing himself by letting himself die.
  • As this incarnation fully embraces his father's crimes, he is implied to be the heir of the Freddy Fazbear business and all its associated dark works besides the pizzerias it owned.
  • In a twist of irony, this incarnation is Near Pure Evil, while his mainstream counterpart is Near Pure Good.
