Villain Overview

All living things, KNEEL before your master!
~ Metal Sonic's most famous quote, spoken as Neo Metal Sonic in Sonic Heroes.
See me as I am, no longer afraid of ANYTHING! I shall become the ultimate overlord, ruling as the world's most supreme being!
~ Metal Sonic as Metal Overlord.
Well? Weren't you going to "stop me?" Come. Show me what you're made of.
~ Neo Metal Sonic after assuming his super form.

Metal Sonic is the secondary antagonist of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.

He is an evil robotic version of Sonic the Hedgehog created by the mad scientist Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik, and one of the second-in-commands of the Eggman Empire. Most of the time, Metal Sonic is Dr. Eggman's right-hand and completely obedient enforcer. In addition to being programmed to serve Eggman, Metal Sonic carries only one goal in mind: destroy Sonic using abilities superior to his. He is Sonic the Hedgehog's second arch-nemesis.

The first and only time we can hear Metal Sonic speak in the games was in Sonic Heroes, in which he was voiced by Jun'ichi Kanemaru in Japanese and Ryan Drummond in English who also voiced his "loathsome copy" in the same game.

Appearance[]

Metal Sonic was created in the image of Sonic the Hedgehog and is thus mostly built of blue metal. He has a yellow circular depression in his chest with a black center, mirroring the peach skin on Sonic's chest. His head has metal fins resembling Sonic's quills and a pair of triangular "ears." Metal Sonic has a muzzle, shoulder plates, upper arms, legs, and fingers and claws made out of silvery metal. His palms are black, while the backs of his hands are square yellow plates. His forearms and lower legs are blue metal like his head and torso, and he has red feet with white stripes designed to resemble Sonic's shoes. To simulate the hedgehog's eyes, he has monitors with cameras behind them, giving them a red sclera.

Following the Ifrit incident, Metal Sonic received a slight update in design which made him taller and gave him a more ellipsoid torso. He also gained more detailed hands, a brilliant blue paint job, joints on his arms and legs, and sharper eyeholes.

Personality[]

Metal Sonic thinks of himself superior to the real Sonic and as such has an intense hatred for the Blue Streak and his friends. Unlike the true Sonic, Metal Sonic is also a complete megalomaniac who sees himself as the ultimate life-form and is happy to do whatever it takes to prove it, even being shown on several occasions to betray his own creator in order to achieve his goal. For a short period of time, Metal Sonic was completely deluded in believing that he was the real Sonic until his breakdown and betrayal of Eggman in Sonic Heroes, accepting the fact that he was merely an artificial duplicate of Sonic, a role which he does not seem to care about nowadays, and has accepted his role in Eggman's plots for world domination. After Sonic Heroes, Metal Sonic fully embraced his evil nature and chose to remain with Eggman, determined on killing his benevolent counterpart however he has since come to believe that he is the true Sonic in a different way calling himself "Sonic the Hedgehog PERFECTED", however Metal still held some small belief that he was the true Sonic which was crushed when he dipped his finger in the Metal virus and nothing happened. He also deeply cares about his creator Dr. Eggman willing to sift through the worlds ashes to find him after he disappeared in Forces, carrying out his conquest of the world in his name, and even wearing a "Let's go Dad" T-shirt to support his "father".

Other Medias[]

Super Smash Bros.[]

Metal Sonic makes cameos in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. for 3DS, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, he is a sticker that increases any character's launch power by 16 points. In Super Smash Bros. for 3DS, he appears as a trophy. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, he is a shield type primary spirit. His spirit battle is a timed stamina battle on the Windy Hill Zone stage against Sonic coated in metal and equipped with a Rocket Belt.

SEGA Heroes[]

Metal Sonic appears as an unplayable enemy unit in SEGA Heroes.

The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog[]

Metal Sonic appears briefly in the ending screen of the spin-off game The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog along with Sage wearing a white shirt that reads Let's Go Daddy and a party hat.

Powers and Abilities[]

Metal Sonic is Dr. Eggman's greatest creation to date, capable of fighting Sonic to a near standstill. He can match Sonic's speed, curl into a ball and spin like a projectile towards his targets just like his organic counterpart. Being modeled after Sonic, Metal is able to predict all of his moves. In addition to having all of Sonic's other abilities, Metal can also scan the abilities of any target and can copy them to near perfection, such as Shadow the Hedgehog's Chaos Control and Chaos's ability to turn into a liquid form.

Metal Sonic's other natural abilities include flight, an indestructible black shield, laser and plasma beams, as well as impressive durability and strength.

One of his most iconic attacks is the V. Maximum Overdrive Attack, where he overloads his circuits to fire himself forwards whilst surrounded by an energy field.

Forms[]

In addition to his regular abilities and the abilities he can copy, Metal Sonic also has several other forms he can transform into.

Metal Sonic Kai[]

Metal Sonic Kai used to be the name of the model given to the Metal Sonic robot that appeared in Knuckles Chaotix in its Japanese manuals.[1], but was later retconned to be the name of the final form that the character, now referred to as the same Metal Sonic that appeared in prior games, takes in this game. Metal Sonic assumes this form when Eggman gives him the seventh and last Dark Ring, turning him to a monstrous red robot.

Neo Metal Sonic[]

Metal Sonic assumes this form for the majority of Sonic Heroes. While the specifics on most of this forms powers and the requirements for changing into this form in the first place, remain unknown, he is shown to be able to shape-shift and fire electrical beams from his claws as well as gaining the ability to speak.

Metal Overlord[]

After copying all the abilities from Team's Sonic, Dark, Rose, Chaotix and Chaos, Metal transforms into this form using parts from other Eggman machines. Metal Sonic also gains in this form flamethrowers, missile launchers, a whip-like tail with spikes, and claws that can shoot spikes and crystals. In this state he is so powerful and durable that even Super forms (Super states achieved by the 7 Chaos Emeralds) cannot harm him directly.

Metal also has a similar state called "Master Overlord" only needing his Neo form, Sonic and Shadow's Bio-data and the Master Emerald, although this form can be defeated by removing the Master Emerald.

Other Robot Sonics[]

Metal Sonic was often confused with Mecha Sonic and Silver Sonic, in some media they are the same villain but in others they are separate beings - this is a trait shared by many Sonic villains (perhaps due to the original games having little true plot, thus the later games and comics had to improvise). Metal Sonic is the second robotic version of Sonic to appear chronologically, and has appeared in many games (whereas Mecha Sonic and Silver Sonic have only appeared in very few games). With the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode Metal it is confirmed that Metal Sonic and Mecha Sonic are two different robots. Sonic Origins, however, places the events of Sonic CD before those of Sonic 2, suggesting that Metal Sonic may have been the first Sonic-based badnik created by Eggman chronologically.

IDW Publishing[]

Field tested and battle hardened! You are my finest creation, Metal Sonic!
~ Dr. Eggman looking over Metal Sonic.
I am Neo Metal Sonic. I am Dr. Eggman's greatest creation. I am Sonic the Hedgehog—perfected. I have used the Egg Fleet to conquer Angel Island. I have secured the Master Emerald—the most powerful gemstone in the world. I have baited the "heroes" into bringing me the last thing I need for my ascension. I have won!
~ Neo Metal Sonic after his conquest of Angel Island.
Now Sonic, my loathsome copy! Bow before your Master Overlord!
~ Metal Sonic as Master Overlord.
Well-Well-Well! What a surprise! I knew it was only a matter of time before you showed up to spoil my fun. I just didn't realize you'd come all the way up here to find me! But no matter—you're still too late! The gears are already turning! My latest genius plan is—
~ Metal Sonic whilst impersonating Eggman.
Lord Eggman repaired me. Removed the rebelliousness from my coding. But you know this—we've clashed since then. He decided to upgrade me to this form again. I was to be his greatest weapon in the final battle. But I was completed too late. The war was lost. You had ruined everything once again. I was given the doctor's bio-data. His genius. His drive. His vision. But I serve the Eggman Empire. The only one who can truly rule it is Dr. Eggman. I decided I would use his persona to ensure his rule remained unbroken. I will conquer the world for Eggman as Eggman. And you will tell me where he is so I may hand over control to him.
~ Metal Sonic to Sonic the Hedgehog.
Sonic: Ha! How do you like that?
Metal Sonic: I like it just fine. Sonic the Hedgehog bio-data successfully copied.
~ Metal Sonic copying Sonic's bio-data.
All hands on deck! Full armament! Surround and disable—but I want him ALIVE!
~ Metal Sonic ordering his troops to bring down Sonic.
Metal Sonic: No more games. Tell me where my master is. NOW.
Sonic: Grk! Kill me and you'll never know!
Metal Sonic: I have your bio-data. I have my original plan. I will sift through the world's ashes to find him if I have to. Tell me or fall.
~ Metal Sonic demanding Sonic to tell him where Eggman is.
Fool. Now I am the one, true Sonic.
~ Metal Sonic witnessing Sonic fall.
Well played, Sonic. I should expect nothing less from my double. But I have won today. I know Eggman is alive while you know nothing of my plans. Keep us in the air and on course. We rendezvous with the fleet on schedule.
~ Metal Sonic
Bring all the ships into formation. Begin the docking procedures. Take all the time you want, Sonic. I've already won.
~ Metal Sonic starting his invasion of Angel Island.
The Master Emerald. "The Controller." One of the most powerful gems in the world. With the ability to neutralize the Chaos Emeralds. So come to me, Sonic. As yourself, or as Super Sonic. Either way...you will be powerless to stop me.
~ Metal Sonic after acquiring the Master Emerald.

Trivia[]

  • The help file included with the initial PC port of Sonic CD claims that some early material refers to Metal Sonic as Mecha Sonic. This is considered a mistake, as Mecha Sonic never officially referred to Metal Sonic.
  • In Fleetway's Sonic the Comic, Metal Sonic was known as Metallix, the Metal Sonic, first appearing in a five-part story based on the character's game debut called "The Sonic Terminator".
  • Although Metal Sonic 3.0 appears in Sonic Rivals 2, it is unknown which (if any) of the previous versions of Metal Sonic are versions 1.0 and 2.0. In the Archie universe, the original Metal Sonics made by Dr. Ivo Robotnik were numbered 1.0 and 2.0, and the other Metal Sonics made by his alternate counterpart, Doctor Eggman, were all 3.0.
  • Sonic Rivals 2 is the first and so far only Sonic game where Metal Sonic plays a heroic role, although that's mostly due to him following the orders of Eggman who doesn't want the world to be destroyed.
  • GameDaily placed Metal Sonic 13th on their "Top 25 Video Game Robots" list, describing him as Dr. Eggman's "greatest creation" and praising the strength of his abilities.
  • In Sonic Heroes, Metal Sonic wants to prove himself to be the "real" Sonic and even calls his organic counterpart "[his] loathsome copy". This is in contrast to his depiction in Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie, in which he solemnly accepts his fate with his sole line "There is only one Sonic".
  • Though Metal Sonic is playable in Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, in the DS version he is also a boss character.
  • Metal Sonic's pose during the ending of Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I is the same as his pose in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games.
  • Metal Sonic rarely speaks and his voice is only heard during Sonic Heroes, while in all of his transformations (Neo Metal Sonic, Metal Madness, and Metal Overlord, as well as when he is disguised as Eggman). Interestingly, he share's Sonic's voice actor. He also speaks with a text bubble in both Sonic Pinball Party and Sonic Generations, even though it was previously believed that the capability of speech was a Heroes-only ability.
    • He also speaks normally while disguised as E-10000B in Sonic Free Riders.
    • In Team Sonic Racing it is revealed that he is physically incapable of speaking now, implying Dr. Eggman removed his ability to talk at some point.
  • Metal Sonic has the most alternate forms of a character that is not a hero.
  • Metal Sonic is considered Sonic's first rival in the series.
  • Metal Sonic is the most recurring robot in the series, next to E-123 Omega.
  • In the game "Spiral Knights", players who purchased a copy of Sonic CD on Steam before January 31, 2012 received a Metal Sonic costume for their knight. This costume was also available to purchase in-game.
  • Metal Sonic is one of the eight Eggman robots who betrayed their creator in the game's continuity, the others being the Zombots, Heavy, Bomb, Gamma, Gemerl, Mecha Sonic, The Heavy King, and Omega.
    • Out of all of them, Metal Sonic, the Zombots and Heavy King are the only ones who haven't turned good.
  • Originally, Metal Sonic's name in Knuckles' Chaotix was Metal Sonic Kai entirely, even in his regular form, which meant that his name in every game following Chaotix was also Metal Sonic Kai. The Encyclo-speedia however retconned this and made Metal Sonic Kai the name of his final boss form in Chaotix, while Metal himself was just Metal Sonic.
  • Metal Sonic is the only Sonic's rival who isn't present in the cutscene preceding the Time Eater boss fight, or the cutscene right after it, most likely due to him exploding after Classic Sonic kicks him at the end of his rival battle, although he does show up active in Sonic Mania.
    • Another possible explanation for this is that Metal Sonic is Sonic's enemy in addition to rival, so he would not be cheering the Sonics on during the final boss. Since he is obviously not Sonic's friend, he would also not be at the party.
  • Metal Sonic was planned to be playable in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), but was scrapped from the game altogether.
  • In Sonic the Fighters, Metal Sonic is not playable. But by using the Action Replay for Sonic Gems Collection on the GameCube, he can be made playable. Metal Sonic is also one of three characters to be added to the playable roster in the HD re-release.
  • In Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, he is one of only four characters to drive an ATV; the other three are Beat, Knuckles, and Joe Musashi.
  • Oddly enough, Metal Sonic can drown when he is played in Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut, despite being a robot and therefore should not require air. This may be due to how in this title, he was simply a reskin of Sonic.
  • Another robotic replica of Sonic, Mecha Sonic, was often confused for Metal Sonic. The confusion initially started back when the US release of Sonic & Knuckles labelled Mecha Sonic as Metal Sonic. However, Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 officially established Mecha Sonic and Metal Sonic being entirely separate beings.

What makes him a Almost Complete Monster?[]

  • While you could argue that Metal Sonic is only evil because he was program that he way he has shown to overwrite his own coding making this already a invalid excuse.
  • He tried to murder Eggman in Heroes and usurp him in Heroes.
  • While he didn't kill him he did usurp him and took over his position.
  • He also threw him a closest and imprisoned him.
  • Even though metal's had a few comedic moments in the comic's it's mostly to show his sadistic and evil nature.
  • He kidnapped Amy and forced Sonic to rescue her so that he could kill Sonic.
  • After this failed he tried to kill him again by having a race with Sonic.
  • He has not only tried this Sonic but also Shadow.
  • He is narcissistic and often sees himself better than everyone else and is only looking out for power.
  • He was so eager to kill Sonic that in the IDW comic's when Rough wanted to fight him Metal Sonic threaten to kill Rough if he tried that even.
  • He is so petty that he once assaulted Sonic's friends all because Sonic told him that he isn't the "original Sonic".
  • After Sonic found out that he wasn't the original he still told himself that he is which resulted in the Metal Virus spreading even faster due to how petty he was, he had spread the virus faster all because he found out that he wasn't the original.
  • In Forces even though he wasn't really there he tried to murder Sonic and the Rookie.
  • He has committed huge acts of Terrorism by bombing people and buildings out of sheer pettiness and sadisticness.
  • Metal Sonic has no limits as proven when he kidnapped Cream & Cheese a long with kidnapping animals and touching and forcing them to become robots.
  • Even though Eggman has done the exact same thing (in terms of kidnapping animals and touching them) he's never once kidnapping Cream & Cheese meaning that he has limits that he won't cross unlike Metal Sonic.
  • Metal Sonic in the IDW comic books for the most part is responsible for finding Eggman and turning him from Mr. Tinkle back into Eggman because he caught Starline's attention
  • He tried to murder Sonic and his friends again in the comic and taunted Knuckles by telling him that he has failed has a guardian since Metal got his hands on the Master Emerald.
  • He also put his foot on Sonic and taunted him by calling him weak and pathetic.
  • Metal Sonic tortured Sonic by digging his foot into his spine out of sheer pettiness.
  • Metal Sonic even continued his masters legacy and recreating the Badniks just to cause terror.
  • After Sonic had asked him why he hasn't joined the heroes unlike Omega and Gemerl Metal Sonic didn't reply; Eggman explained that he hasn't because he just wants power.
  • This also means that he's aware that what he's doing is wrong and has moral agency.
  • Metal Sonic also enjoys hurting people in front of others just to scare and intimidate them.
  • He once tortured Sonic and took joy out of it.

What prevents him from being a Complete Monster?[]

  • He has a few moments in the series where he isn't taken seriously, such as in The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, where he can be seen wearing a party hat and shirt that reads Let's Go Dad as the Mirage Express was approaching Eggman's base.
    • He does care for Orbot and Cubot, who look up to him as a brother, this is proved in IDW in the first few issue when he disguised himself as Eggman and him planning on ruling Angel Island is that he is happy that they are loyal to him and praised them when they do get it right. And, unlike his creator, he doesn't abuse Orbot and Cubot. In Rise of the Wisps, he puts up with their bumbling despite his annoyance.
