~ Megatron
Megatron, also known as Galvatron, is the main antagonist of the three series of the Transformers Unicron Trilogy.

History[]

Backstory[]

Megatron led the Decepticons in civil war, which was bolstered due to the Mini-Cons. The Mini-Cons made a pact with the Autobots to leave the planet in a starship, but Megatron struck as the tiny 'bots were leaving, and the damaged Mini-Con ship crash-landed on the planet Earth. In one battle among the many that followed, Megatron discovered the abandoned Autobot Wheeljack pinned by rubble in the midst of an inferno, and saved his life in exchange for his loyalty.

Armada[]

Arriving on Earth[]

Megatron led his Decepticons to Earth in the year 2010. In First Encounter, he met three human children who had befriended the Mini-Con High Wire. After demanding the Mini-Con, Megatron battled Optimus Prime, and in Metamorphosis, the rest of their troops arrived. Eventually the Decepticon leader called for a strategic retreat. The Decepticons withdrew to Earth's moon to investigate the portion of the Mini-Con ship that landed there, which they used as their base, and Megatron discovered his old Mini-Con partner, Leader-1. With the Mini-Con giving him an edge over the Autobots, Megatron had his forces take new vehicle modes and led them back to Earth. The Decepticons targeted the three human children from before, who had since awoken the Street Action Mini-Con Team, but the Autobots thwarted them.

Searching for Mini-Cons[]

In Base, Megatron had trouble controlling the firepower Leader-1 bestowed him, and when Autobots Red Alert and Hot Shot gained Mini-Cons of their own, he called retreat. Cyclonus was able to obtain two Mini-Cons, and Megatron granted one to his most loyal subordinate, Demolishor, infuriating Starscream. In Comrade, a Mini-Con was detected in the Grand Canyon, and Megatron and the Decepticons made a play for it, though Megatron ordered Starscream to stay behind. However, he came along anyways, and they were overpowered by Perceptor, costing them the Mini-Con. The Autobot and Decepticon forces fought on Earth for possession of the Mini-Cons.

Hunting the Mini Con Weapons[]

Leader-1 and Megatron recovered the Mini-Con Sonar from a underwater ruin. In Swoop, Megatron realized Sonar was one of the three Mini-Cons who formed the Star Saber, and led the Decepticons in invading the Autobot base to steal the other two, facing down Hot Shot and Optimus Prime at the same time. Sonar awakened his team-mates and they formed the Star Saber in Megatron's hands, but no sooner was the sword complete than Optimus blasted it from Megatron's grip. With the sword now in Hot Shot's hands, Megatron was forced to retreat before it.

In Overmatch, Megatron hired the mercenary Scavenger, and learned of the Skyboom Shield. In Credulous, Megatron fought Hot Shot, and the Autobots newest recruit, Sideways. On the Moon, however, Sideways helped Megatron steal the Star Saber from Hot Shot, and joined the Decepticons. In Conspiracy, after the Star Saber was gained by Starscream, Megatron had Leader-1 trick Starscream into accidentally attacking Demolishor, leading the others to question Starscream's ability with the sword, ensuring it would be his. In Trust, Megatron used the sword in his next battle with Optimus, during which the Autobot hurled them into a crevasse. Megatron plummeted to the bottom while Optimus was saved by Scavenger, a Autobot spy. Hauled out by Sideways, the injured Megatron vengefully ordered a retreat. In Vacation, Megatron took out his frustrations with combat training, which was an excuse to chase his men, especially Sideways, with the Star Saber.

In Reinforcement, still wielding the Saber, Megatron managed to obtain the final Mini-Con that formed the Skyboom Shield. In Decisive Battle, with Saber and Shield now his, Megatron challenged Optimus Prime to a decisive battle in the desert. During the combat, Prime managed to wrest the shield from Megatron. In Vow, Megatron ensured another confrontation with Prime, separating him from the others by warping them to different sites of past battles. Facing off against Prime, Megatron employed a legion of Mini-Cons to attack him, knowing he would not fight back against the Mini-Cons. He did not expect Prime's reluctance to fight prompting the Mini-Cons to turn on him, keeping him occupied until the other Autobots arrived.

In Rebellion, Megatron began brutalizing Starscream for his failings, and might have killed him if not for Demolishor. Sideways manipulated Starscream into challenging Megatron to a duel for leadership, with Megatron so certain of his victory that he wagered the Star Saber on the fight's outcome. Megatron managed to defeat his lieutenant with his bare hands. At the last moment, Megatron spared Starscream, preferring to let him live with the knowledge he knew Starscream's weakness,  his conscience. With his position reaffirmed, Megatron led the Decepticons into battle against the Autobots with renewed morale.

In Tactician, Megatron summoned the Decepticon tactician Thrust to Earth to aid his campaign. Thrust's strategy allowed Megatron a clear shot at Optimus that would have killed him, if not for the sudden arrival of Jetfire. In Linkup, with Prime left damaged, Megatron and Thrust lured the Autobots into a trap to gain the Skyboom Shield. While trying to wrestle the shield away from Smokescreen, Megatron was defeated by the combined form of Optimus and Jetfire. In Detection, Thrust implicated Sideways as a disruptive element, and Megatron caught him reporting to a higher power. The furious Megatron cut the traitor to pieces with the Star Saber, only for Sideways's remains to restore themselves, allowing him to escape.

In Desperate, Megatron, despite being skeptical of the newly arrived Tidal Wave, was impress when the Decepticon revealed he could combine with Megatron, giving him a power boost. Battling Jet Optimus, Megatron slashed the Autobots apart with the Star Saber, to be saved by the awakened Mini-Cons that formed the third weapon, the Requiem Blaster. After adding Wheeljack to his forces, in Sacrifice Megatron led a second attack on the Autobot base to steal the Requiem Blaster, obtaining the weapon and shooting Smokescreen with it. In Regeneration, after Starscream having been abandoned on the battlefield, he finally rebelled, making an attempt on Megatron's life. Outnumbered, Starscream fled to Earth with the Star Saber, joining the Autobots.

In Rescue, when the Autobots invaded the base, Megatron watched over the Mini-Cons, whom he had put to work constructing a spacecraft. When Perceptor faced him, the Mini-Cons turned on Megatron, with even Leader-1 attempting to escape him. Hot Shot intervened before Megatron could destroy the Mini-Cons, leading him across the moon while the other Autobots got the little 'bots to safety and, along with Starscream, took the Decepticon commander down.

Building the Hydra Cannon[]

In Mars, Megatron was told by Thrust that combining the Star Saber and Skyboom Shield with the Requiem Blaster could create a mighty weapon. To test this, Megatron took the Requiem Blaster to confront Jetfire and Starscream, wielding the Shield and Saber at the time, when they were trying to recover a Mini-Con on Mars. The energy released was effective, even though he was knocked back. In Crack, Thrust convinced Megatron of a plan that would ensure the Decepticons would hold all three weapons. Through his machinations, Starscream stole the Skyboom and returned to the Decepticons. In Crisis, Megatron tested Starscream's loyalty by having him fire the newly created Hydra Cannon. As Optimus and Jetfire attacked the ship, the weapon was fired at Earth, but Optimus Prime took the blast to save the planet, killing himself in the process. In Remorse, Prime's death plunged Megatron into a deep depression, having lost his greatest opponent without the chance to finish him with his own hands. He ordered his men to return to Cybertron.

The Unicron Battles[]

In Depart, Starscream told Megatron that the Autobots had launched a ship to pursue them, Megatron ignored them at first. In Miracle, he later ordered them to turn around, hoping to shake his sense of loss in battle. However the Mini-Cons were able to resurrect Optimus, to his delight. In Puppet, on the way to Cybertron, Megatron, Starscream, and Demolisher followed Hot Shot and Red Alert to a barren planet. There, they battled Nemesis Prime, and was wounded. Megaton was upgraded through the power of the Mini-Cons into "Galvatron", and worked with Optimus to kill Nemesis.

GalvatronArmada

Armada's Galvatron form.

In Uprising, Galvatron and his men had no trouble taking over Cybertron with the Mini-Con weapons, but when the Autobots caught up to them, Optimus offered an alliance against the new threat of Unicron. Galvatron refused, dismissing Unicron's existence as a trick. In Drift, after Thrust revealed he had joined Unicron and stole the Blaster and the Shield, Galvatron dedicated the Decepticons' manpower into locating Thrust, ignoring reports that the Autobots were pulling out from their trenches. In Portent, Galvatron considered the implications of an alliance, which would signify that the war would have meant nothing. Even when Unicron's existence was proven by the revelation he had been posing as Cybertron's moon, this fear led Galvatron to deny his threat.

In Cramp, his battle with Optimus was interrupted by Starscream, who challenged him to one final duel. In the duel, Galvatron fatally ran Starscream through with the Star Saber, but with this last breath, Starscream struck against Unicron, and was obliterated as a result. Reached by the sacrifice of his subordinate and the physical proof of Unicron's threat, Galvatron accepted the truth of Starscream's words and allied with Optimus.

In Alliance, Galvatron explained to the Decepticons that they ought to ally with the Autobots in order to destroy Unicron. In a ceremony, Prime and Galvatron shook hands, uniting the Autobots and Decepticons into an armada that struck at Unicron together. Their attack yielded no success, and a small scouting team was sent to Unicron's surface to gather intelligence. After Unicron began transforming, the scouting party was rescued by Jet Optimus and Galvatron, combined with Tidal Wave. In Union, Optimus Prime and Galvatron decided to venture inside his body. Before doing so, Galvatron confronted Thrust over his treachery on Unicron's shoulder, and left him to die after he was caught in one of Unicron's joints and crushed.

In Origin, Galvatron entered Unicron's body along with Optimus Prime and travelled to the centre of it. They were absorbed into the chaos god's body and mind, but when the Autobots' human allies freed the Mini-Cons from Unicron's thrall, Galvatron too was freed. In Mortal Combat, believing the threat of Unicron was over, challenged Optimus to a final duel. However, the energies released in the battle reawakened Unicron. Galvatron believed that the only way to end the circle was to destroy himself and so he chose to sacrifice his life rather than live in an era of peace, plunging himself into Unicron's maw. In a flash, the two were seemingly destroyed.

Energon[]

Although he was believed dead by the Autobots and Decepticons, as revealed in Cybertron City, Megatron, like Unicron, had survived the final battle. However, his body was a decayed husk absorbed into the equally damaged body of Unicron. Megatron lay dormant within Unicron for ten years until Megatron’s Sword, when Alpha Quintesson began his plan to re-energize Unicron, and turned the Decepticons to his side with the promise that Galvatron would be returne. As proof of their leader's existence, Alpha Q forged an Energon Sword from Galvatron's spark, which pulsed with his essence, and convinced both sides that Galvatron still lived.

Return to life[]

As Alpha Q's Terrorcons stole Energon from the Autobots, Galvatron saw his opportunity, siphoning off some of the fuel to fashion a new body for himself. Realising what he was up to, Alpha Q instructed his lieutenant Scorponok to destroy Galvatron, but when Scorponok stabbed the corpse with the blade, Megatron was fully revived. Taking the sword for his own, Megatron proceeded to take control of Unicron's body, sending Alpha Q fleeing in Unicron's head. Megatron thus restarted his campaign against Earth and the Autobots, seeking energon to reactivate Unicron so he could use him as the ultimate weapon. Megatron also encountered the recreation of Starscream, and brainwashed him into his servant.

Megatron eventually succeeded in bringing Unicron to the vicinity of Cybertron and transforming the planet-eater to robot mode. However, in an attempt to stop him, Alpha Q rammed Unicron's head, charged with the positive Energon of Earth, into Unicron's body. This triggered a reaction that tore a rupture in reality that led to a new region of space where Alpha Q recreated all the planets Unicron had consumed. Megatron immediately saw these new worlds as targets to acquire more Energon, and after another series of attacks, Megatron successfully amassed enough to fully reanimate Unicron. However, the chaos-bringer's consciousness invaded Megatron's body, taking over his mind.

Possession by Unicron[]

EnergonGalvatron

Energon's Galvatron form.

Although Optimus Supreme was able to destroy Unicron's body, Unicron's mind lived on within Megatron, subtly directing him to attack Cybertron and uncover a reservoir of Super Energon beneath the planet's surface. Megatron immersed himself in the powerful liquid, causing him assume a more powerful form, once again taking the name of Galvatron. Taking control of the planet, he forced the Autobots underground with Energon gas and used the planet's Energon Towers to relocate Cybertron to Alpha Q's region of space. Once there, Galvatron once again coated himself with Super Energon, causing growing to a colossal height. However, it was at that point that Unicron's influence seized control of his mind and directed him out into space to re-merge with his spark. Optimus Prime went battle the Unicron-possessed Galvatron and, after Galvatron's hatred of Unicron caused his consciousness to surface again, Prime drained Unicron's influence from Galvatron and sealed it within himself.

Enraged by Unicron's manipulations, Galvatron decided to destroy Unicron's spark, but wound up being possessed by it once more. While struggling to fight the control of Unicron, Galvatron was confronted by Optimus Prime once again. Rather than fight him, Galvatron instead flew into the foundling sun created by Primus, igniting the star and seemingly destroying himself rather than allow Unicron victory.

Cybertron[]

In Fallen, a further ten years later, the energon sun collapsed into a black hole, and Megatron was freed, having transformed Unicron's remains into a suit of armor that greatly magnified his already-impressive power. As the Autobots prepared to evacuate Cybertron in the wake of the black hole, Megatron stole a holographic map containing locations of the Cyber Planet Keys that could be used to seal the black hole from Vector Prime. Operating out of a fiery pocket dimension, Megatron schemed to used the world-shaping power of the Cyber Planet Keys and their focal Omega Lock to accelerate the universal degeneration created by the black hole, destroying the universe and using the keys to remake it in his own image.

Hunt for the Cyber Planet Keys[]

In Hidden, leaving Starscream and Thundercracker to search for the Omega Lock on Earth, Megatron located the resting place of the first Cyber Planet Key on Velocitron. After recruiting Ransack and Crumplezone to his cause in Landmine, in Rush, Megatron deduced that the planet's racing trophy was the key. After failing to defeat planet ruler Override in a race to learn more, he left Ransack and Crumplezone to win the trophy and turned his attention to the Jungle Planet, home of the second Cyber Planet Key, where he ingratiated himself with planet ruler Scourge. Both missions ultimately ended in failure, however, when the Autobots acquired the keys.

Attempting to find the third key, Megatron discovered that he had been betrayed by Starscream, who switched out the planet map with a duplicate that led him to a dead sector of space and sealed him within a metallic sphere. Scourge was able to liberate him a short time later, but in that time, Starscream had obtained the third Cyber Planet Key from Earth for himself along with the Omega Lock and other keys. Megatron made a beeline for his treacherous lieutenant, but was intercepted by the Hot Shot, Red Alert and Scattorshot, who intended to hold him off until the other Autobots could stop Starscream. Starscream's attempts to harness the Earth Key caused a release of energies that gave Megatron a new Cyber Key power, the "Death Machine Gun," which he used to mow down the Autobots in his path.

The Autobots managed to retake the keys from Starscream, Megatron mounted another attack where he stole the keys and retreat into his pocket dimension. Prime pursued him through the portal and defeated him in a pitched battle, reacquiring the lock and returning to Cybertron. Megatron attempted to pursue him, but Vector Prime combined his portal-opening powers with the Cyber Planet Keys and collapsed Megatron's dimension in upon itself, resulting in Megatron's destruction.

Rebirth[]

However, Megatron's Unicron armour caused him to return as a ghost composed of pure darkness. Megatron returned to Cybertron and used Unicron's reformatting powers to upgrade the injured Crumplezone into Dark Crumplezone. The Autobot Leobreaker attempted to attack him, but was unable to stop him from completely restoring his physical body. Megatron then used the lingering darkness to create an evil doppleganger of Leobreaker, Nemesis Breaker, out of the Autobot's dark thoughts. Merging with Nemesis Breaker to form Dark Claw Mode, Megatron battled Optimus Prime and Leobreaker's Savage Claw Mode, until news of the location of the fourth and final Cyber Planet Key caused him to exit the battle.

Megatron and his party of Decepticons were guided through a spatial warp by  Soundwave to Gigantion, home of the final key. Megatron engaged the world's leader, Metroplex, for possession of the key only to be defeated in seconds. Consumed with rage, the power of Unicron within his armor reached out and detected the energies of the Giant Planet's Cyber Planet Key, drawing upon them and infusing Megatron's body with them. In his dark, shadowed form, Megatron decimated the Autobot forces before being confronted by Optimus Prime. Megatron then revealed his completed transformation, having once again become Galvatron.

After taking revenge on Metroplex, Galvatron went after the Giant Planet key. Though the Autobots were able to acquire the key, Galvatron managed to steal the completed Omega Lock soon after. Right after doing so though, Megatron was attacked by Starscream, and the two battled for possession of the artifact. Galvatron claimed a slim victory in the battle, with the sheer amount of energy released in the clash actually blasting Starscream, as well as Sideways and Soundwave, into another universe.

Endgame[]

With the lock and keys now in his hands, Galvatron attacked Primus and returned to the Black Hole with his Decepticons, ready to destroy the universe with the Black Hole and recreate it anew. However, the Transformers from each of the five planets all got together and formed a coalition force to defeat Galvatron. In a massive battle, Galvatron was confronted by the five planet leaders, who used their combined powers to defeat him. Realising he couldn't win, Galvatron let go of Omega Lock with the Cyber Planet Keys in it to allow the universe to be destroyed by the Black Hole. However, the Autobots managed to retrieve the Omega Lock and the Cyber Planet Keys and return them to Primus, whose Spark was then restored and who used the Ark to finally seal the black hole for good.

Final duel with Optimus[]

In Unfinished, having had ultimate power torn from his grasp, Galvatron contemplated giving up. However, the spirit of Starscream then appeared before him to mock him. Galvatron realised that his former lieutenant was right and decided to continue his conquest. He attacked the Autobots' project to propel the Jungle Planet back into place via massive rockets and dented one of them, setting the course of the planet out of order. However, the combined power of the Transformers of the four planets, along with Megatron's former Decepticon lackeys, managed to move the rocket back into place. Meanwhile, Megatron challenged Optimus to one final duel. Battling on Cybertron's moon, Galvatron generated a massive blade of dark energy, which Optimus countered with Vector Prime's sword. As the two old enemies charged towards each other in a final strike, Optimus impaled Galvatron through the chest, finally killing him and causing him to dissolve away. In Beginning, as seen in a montage, in the afterlife, Galvatron was seen eternally duelling Vector Prime.

Personality[]

On the surface, Megatron seems to be a refined, intelligent general. He refers to his closest troops as "gentlemen", and acts a father of his men. Under the surface, Megatron has a barbaric side. He is obsessed with power and will do anything to gain it, regardless of any opponents. He is dangerously destructive, willing to abuse his troops at the drop of a hat, and impulsive, leaping into any opportunity, regardless of the danger. He is even willing to abandon them if he does not need them anymore.  Each time Megatron was revived, his personality became more selfish

Megatron is obsessed with both war and defeating Optimus Prime for good. Megatron is so determined to defeat Optimus himself, he will prevent others killing him, and even force Prime to face him. When Prime was seemingly destroyed, Megatron sunk into a deep depression, and was happy to see him again. Megatron seems unable to live in a universe without war, the two being filled with enough hatred to power Unicron, and willing to rather die than live in peace. When he and Optimus had their final duel, Megatron rufused to surrender, and even his dying words insisted he would survive.

Trivia[]

  • David Kaye previously voiced the Beast Era incarnation of Megatron. Kaye would go onto voice Lugnut in Transformers Animated, and Hardshell in Transformers Prime.
