Megatron was the leader of the Decepticons, and the main antagonist of the Aligned continuity. He served as the main antagonist of the Cybertron games, the Aligned Novel Trilogy, and the cartoon series Transformers Prime.
History[]
Backstory[]
As revealed in One Shall Rise, the miner D-16 took on the the name Megatronus (the name of one of the original thirteen Primes), and became a gladiator. There he won public admiration, and met fellow gladiator Soundwave, who almost bested him in combat, an act that created mutual respect between the two. After leaving the gladiatorial arena Megatronus saw the oppession of the lower class, and the corruption of the ruling class, and turned politician, trying to effect change. He inspired a clerk named Orion Pax, and the two joined forces to end corruption, and the two would regard each other like brothers.
Megatronus shortened his name to Megatron before he and Orion Pax appeared before the High Council. Megatron threatened the council, promising to overthrow them and instate himself as the next Prime. Orion, on the other hand made an impassioned speech in favour of autonomy that persuaded the council, and was considered worthy of being a true Prime. The jealous Megatron left the council and Orion behind and assembled his followers, the "Decepticons", beginning the war for Cybertron and vowing to find the lost Matrix of Leadership.
As revealed in Sick Mind, Megatron created the deadly cybonic plague which wiped out millions, and found a way to weaponize Tox-En which he used to wipe out an entire unit, as revealed in Toxicity.
Exodus[]
Note: Exodus tells it's own account of Megatron's backstory, and of the exacuation from Cybertron, which conflicts with the Cybertron games.
War for Cybertron[]
Megatron, along with Barricade and Brawl invaded a neutral scientific research station to harvest Dark Energon to corrupt the core of Cybertron. He fought off the defender of the station, Starscream, and dismissed Jetfire’s pleading to not use Dark Energon. When they finally reached the storage chamber, he entered a container full of raw Dark Energon, and absorbed it, bestowing a portion of it upon Barricade and Brawl. A single blast of Dark Energon was enough to destroy an entire company of station security forces. Starscream interrupted Jetfire's warnings, asking to join the Decepticon leader. Starscream revealed he knew how to manufacture more, with a dormant Energon Bridge. Jetfire retreated to inform Zeta Prime and Megatron sent Starscream, Thundercracker, and Skywarp to activate the bridge.
With a steady supply of Dark Energon, Megatron launched an attack on Iacon City, intending to take the Omega Key and use it to enter the Core, along with Breakdown and Soundwave. After shredding through the city with the help of Starscream's air-support, Megatron beat Zeta, had his arrested, and thrown into Kaon's prison before taking the key for his own. However, Megatron realised that the "key" was the activation signal for the true key, the battleship sized Autobot Omega Supreme. Having Omega hot on their tails, Megatron, Soundwave, and Breakdown traversed the lands of the core to finally beat the being and forced him to unlock the very thing he guarded. Megatron's goals were successful, laughing as Cybertron was infected with Dark Energon by his own hands.
At some point, Megatron transformed the research station into a sentient, gigantic Decepticon Trypticon. Though Megatron ruled Cybertron with an iron fist, the Autobots were relentless to surrender. Now led by Optimus, Megatron had his nemesis arrested only for him to break out, free the already imprisoned Autobots, and save the dying Zeta. When Optimus, now a Prime, ordered the evacuation of the Autobots from Cybertron, Megatron used Trypticon in the form of a orbital weapons station, to destroy the evacuating ships. When the Aerialbots, including Jetfire, flow up to stop it, Megatron mocked him, and had Trypticon target Optimus Prime. However, Trypticon was defeated by Optimus and the Autobots.
Interim events[]
As revealed in Operation Bumblebee, during a battle at Tyger Pax, Megatron crushed the Autobot Bumblebee's voice box when the scout refused to break under interrogation. After his assassin Skyquake failed to kill Optimus at the Battle of Technahar, as mentioned in Masters and Students, Megatron became obsessed with destroying him, that being was his right alone. As revealed in Project Predacon, Megatron had Shockwave send an army of Predacons to Earth to lay waste to any Autobot forces on the planet and secure all energon deposits.
Rise of the Dark Spark[]
Megatron soon found records of an artifact called the Dark Spark, the apparent counterpart to the Matrix. He dispatched Soundwave, Shockwave and Starscream to the ruined Crystal City to bring it to him. He not only received it but added the Insecticons to his ranks as well taking Cliffjumper prisoner. When Prime came to confront him, Megatron had already mastered the Dark Spark, specifically its connection to Dark Energon. Despite his best efforts his control of the Dark Spark was second to Optimus' contoll of the Matrix. The Prime managed to unleash the Matrix energy on Megatron who, despite trying to counter with the Dark Spark, was knocked into stasis and carried off by Shockwave.
Fall of Cybertron[]
After the Autobots decided to escape Cybertron with the Ark, and Megatron, blaming Optimus for thwarting his plans, launched an attack on Iacon in order to destroy the Ark. While commanding the battle, he sent Starscream, Onslaught and Brawl to capture Optimus and bring him before him. As Megatron executed two Autobots before Optimus' eyes, he pleaded that they only wanted to leave Cybertron, but Megatron wasn't going to allow him. As the Warp Cannon prepared to destroy both the Ark, and the Decepticon leader to do the same to the Autobot leader, Metroplex tore the roof off of the building they were in. Refusing to retreat, Megatron fired at the colossus, only to be crushed by the giant Autobot's fist.
Soundwave salvaged what was left of Megatron, rebuilt him into a new form in his laboratory, and reactivated him with Dark Energon. After awakening, Megatron was enraged to see that Starscream was in control, and then proceeded to crash Starscream's coronation ceremony. Slaughtering the loyalists, Megatron turned on Starscream and drove him off. Shockwave informed him of the space bridge technology he had discovered and a planet for them to plunder, and they required a suitable power source for a transport to take them. Due to Starscream's self-indulgence, the Decepticons' energon was dwindling, forcing Megatron to find more power. He decided to retrieve the power core from the fallen Trypticon. Megatron told the beast that since he had failed him, he would be reconfigured as a spacecraft called the Nemesis.
The two ships were headed towards a mysterious black hole, and as they waited to soar into it they had a final brutal conflict. Optimus and Megatron met up on top of the Ark where they had a violent sword fight. Megatron prepared to finish him off with a cannon, only for Bumblebee to take the shot for Optimus. Their battle reignited, the two leaders traded blows with swords, causing heavy damage to one another. But before a final blow could be delivered, the Ark crumbled under the Space Bridge's force, and while Megatron shouted in anger, both ships were drawn through.
Exiles[]
The Nemesis emerged from the Space Bridge, close to Velocitron, a lost colony world. The Autobots had already ben and gone from the planet, but Megatron's sleeper agent Makeshift had ignited political tensions and sparked a civil war between Override and Ransack's's followers.Megatron found Ransack's obsession with speed irritating, but allowed him to pledge his allegiance to the Decepticons. Ransack's Decepticons continued their war on Velocitron while the rest of Megatron's forces boarded the Nemesis, tracking the Ark's energy signature.
Megatron's forces tracked the Ark to Junkion, and attacked both the Autobots and the native Junkions. Megatron also reunited with the marooned Decepticon Axer. Axer presented Megatron with the Requiem Blaster, which he had scavenged from Junkion's core. Megatron ordered the gun to be attached to the Nemesis' hull. The battle also awakened the ancient Cannonspring, who united with several other Cybertronians and combined into Nexus Prime, who held off the Decepticons. As the planet tore itself apart, Megatron duelled with Optimus Prime, wielding the Cyber Caliber. Although Optimus gained the upper hand, he received a vision regarding the AllSpark's location, and retreated in the Ark. Since the Requiem Blaster ran the risk of catastrophically overheating, Megatron ordered his troops to jettison the artifact. Megatron ordered his troops to follow the Ark off of Junkion and back into deep space.

Prime[]
In time, Megatron and his army arrived on Earth, establishing mines to collect the Energon that the planet had been seeded with during the war, as mentioned in Stronger, Faster. As revealed in Masters & Students, he had some of his best warriors, such as Skyquake to guard deposits not ready to mine. After some early conflicts on the planet, Megatron withdrew to space to search for more troops, leaving Starscream in charge.
Darkness Rising[]
Searching the void for three years, Megatron found something better; a new source of Dark Energon, which he dubbed the "blood of Unicron", with which he could reanimate dead Transformers as an undead army. Returning to Earth, and resuming command, Megatron tested the Dark Energon on the deceased Autobot Cliffjumper, reviving him as a zombie "Terrorcon" that killed several Decepticon Miners, but which posed no threat to Megatron himself. This partial reactivation of Cliffjumper's lifesigns drew the Autobots to the Decepticons' mining operations. Deciding it was not time to confront Prime, Megatron withdrew aboard the Nemesis and continued to brood over the Dark Energon.
Megatron's inability to control the zombie Cliffjumper convinced him that he needed to integrate the Dark Energon into his body in order to control the undead legions he planned to create. Thrusting a shard of the material into his spark, he was filled with its power, feeling as though he was connected to Unicron's thoughts. Requiring a test run, Megatron headed to the site of an ancient Cybertronian battle on Earth, one full of the remains of fallen warriors, where he was confronted by Optimus and Ratchet. Using Dark Energon to raise the dead Transformers as Terrorcons, Megatron successfully found he had control of the undead horde, and sent them against the two Autobots.
While Optimus and Ratchet fought their way through the Terrorcons, Megatron flew off before they could reach him, satisfied with his test results and ready to open a space bridge to Cybertron and use Dark Energon to revive all the dead. Despite the Autobots' best efforts to damage the Nemesis and prevent the bridge from opening, Megatron succeeded in his plans, and then had his showdown with Optimus Prime atop the bridge itself as he waited for the Terrorcon legions to pass through to Earth. While the two old foes battled, the other Autobots sabotaged the bridge, causing it to explode and destroy both the Terrorcon army and seemingly Megatron himself.

Orion Pax[]
After successfully getting Orion Pax on side, Megatron joined the rest of the Decepticons and tell them told them that Orion was to be shown every courtesy, and the first to address him as Optimus Prime would have their voice-box torn out. Megatron went on to feed Orion lies, telling him that Ratchet was the leader of the Autobots, and the Decepticons had sworn to protect Earth. Megatron then put him to work decoding data from the Iacon archives about Project Iacon. Knock Out was ordered to set up Orion's work station a few inches away from the heavily surveyed Energon storage vault.
When returning to Orion, he began to realise that his ally asked many questions, even having to tell him that Starscream was dead. When talking to Soundwave, he admitted he knew Orion would find the truth eventually and was trying to keep the truth from him until he finished decoding Project Iacon. When Arcee got aboard the Nemesis, Megatron ordered that Arcee be escorted off the ship by Soundwave, despite Airachnid’s objections. Megatron attempted to cover for a surprise visit by Starscream when he managed to sneak aboard the ship. Orion asked why Megatron lied, but he claimed Starscream was metaphorically dead to their cause for joining the Autobots. Megatron left Orion alone and talked to Soundwave. Soundwave notified Megatron of Orion finding information on Optimus Prime, and Megatron realised that harsher methods would be necessary to complete Project Iacon.
Megatron payed Orion a visit to expose Orion's findings. Orion demanded to know the full truth, but Megatron refused, and Soundwave recovered Orion's findings when he attempted to delete them. Soundwave also informed Megatron of activity at the space bridge and Megatron found that the Autobots had taken control of it, and that one of their traps on Cybertron was activated. Megatron ordered the guards to watch Orion while he went out and threatened to kill the archivist if he had not completed the project. Megatron realised that the Autobots must have been searching for a way to restore Orion to Optimus. Megatron arrived at the space bridge and defeated the trio of Autobots present, and waited for Arcee to return from the open space bridge with the Matrix in her possession. When Orion had overpowered his guards, he declared his loyalty to the Autobots, and fought Megatron, who defeated the amnesiac Autobot. While he was distracted by Arcee, Jack returned the Matrix to Orion, who regained his memory, defeated Megatron, and left with the Autobots, leaving him screaming furiously at his failure.
