Max Mordon on the case!
~ Max Mordon's catchphrase.

Maximillian "Max" Mordon is the main antagonist of the 2012 computer-animated Spanish film Tad: The Lost Explorer.

He appears to be an archaeological explorer, but later turns out to actually be a mercenary from Odysseus Inc. who seeks to find the Idol of Paititi in order to gain immortality. He is secretly Kopponen's boss.

He was voiced by Pep Anton Muñoz in the Spanish version, and by Adam James in the English dubbed version.

History[]

Max Mordon is known to be a famous archaeologist who appears on television, notorious for his discoveries made in different parts of the world. His biggest fan at the time was the protagonist Tad Stones, a bricklayer who dreams of being an adventurous explorer like him, self-proclaimed his number one fan. Mordon used to be a star, considered the best archaeologist in the world.

Mordon was also in a relationship with Sara Lavrof, to whom he was engaged. In the scientific community, however, Max was considered a sick joke by actual archaeologists such as Professor Miguel Humbert, Tad's friend, and Sara's father, Professor Lavrof, mostly due to the fact that Mordon seemed more interested on his own celebrity image than doing actual archeology of some kind.

However, it turns out that Mordon is a mercenary who had allied with an evil organization of treasure hunters called The Odysseus Inc (led by the pursuer Kopponen), to find the lost idol of Paititi with the goal of obtaining eternal life. Secretly, to achieve his goal, he sets out to betray the father of his bride and plans to kidnap him (as Lavrof is the only one who can translate the ruins), while also hiding his alliance with Odysseus.

In the movie[]

Mordon first appears in the Paititi Pyramid Prison, where he finds Tad and Sara (who had joined Tad on his adventure to find the lost city of Paititi) trying to free Professor Lavrof after being imprisoned by Odysseus. When a shocked Sara asks Max what he's doing here, he pretends to have been kidnapped by Odysseus, calling them "thieves" to make it sound more believable. Tad is excited to see his idol, but gets jealous when he sees Max and Sara kissing, thus finding out that they were engaged. With the arrival of Kopponen, Max asks Sara to give the Odysseus what they are looking for (the tablet to access Paititi's map) so that they can free them. Sara agrees, having brought the tablet with her, much to the annoyance of her father. After a while, Lavrof manages to decipher the map with the apparent location for the Paititi treasure. With the target seemingly discovered, Kopponen and the Odysseus decide to take Mordon and Lavrof to the desert.

In the desert, during the search for Paititi, Mordon and Kopponen talk behind Lavrof's back, with Kopponen doubting that the treasure is there. However, Mordon assures that Lavrof would not deceive him, since he is practically his son-in-law, (though said feeling is not reciprocated by Lavrof). When Kopponen asks Max if he thinks Lavrof doesn't suspect their alliance, Max says that this is impossible considering he is "famous on TV". However, after 24 hours of searching with no results, both Max and Kopponen realize that Lavrof was deceiving them. An enraged Max orders Kopponen to question Prof. Lavrof, saying that the old man was trying to "play" with them. On the other hand, Tad, Sara and Freddy managed to find the true location to the lost city, and they go towards the jungle. Unfortunately, Kopponen discovers this through the binoculars he took from Lavrof and orders the Odysseus to go to the place, which was located in an underground temple, with Max and Lavrof going with them.

While the Odysseus build the elevators that would take them to the city of Paititi, Max secretly talks to his right-hand Kopponen, telling him that he cannot leave Tad and Freddy alive, since they were a threat to his plan; but Kopponen deems them "harmless", mentioning in the process that Tad is actually a bricklayer (due to having shown him and the Odysseus his passport earlier), much to Max's surprise. Despite this, Max still orders Kopponen to kill them, since if they escaped, they could ruin the whole plan. After this, Max quickly goes with Sara to the elevator, while he secretively asks the Odysseus to kill Tad and Freddy, something they fearfully discover.

The group then tours the temple to search for the much-hunted idol of paititi. Elsewhere, both Tad and Freddy manage to shake off and defeat half of Odysseus's men, after which Tad heads down towards the temple. Tad then meets up with the others, escaping from a mummy he found in the temple and scared him. Seeing Max, Tad quickly reveals to Sara that he was evil and was in league with the Odysseus, having ordered both him and Freddy to be annihilated.

At this, Max reacts by asking Tad to tell Sara that he is not the brilliant archaeologist he claims to be, but just a construction worker. Sara asks if that's true, and Tad admits it. However, Sara discovers Max's true nature when she overhears a member of Odysseus calling him "boss". With this, Sara realizes that Max is the mastermind behind the evil operation, ordered her father kidnapped, and tried to kill Freddy and Tad. Max nervously tries to excuse his actions, but it's too late since Sara has seen the kind of person he really is. Angered by this truth, Sara slaps Max in the face, furiously calling off their engagement. Now that his true self has been exposed, Max holds Tad and Sara at gunpoint, while the two are disappointed after realizing the true mercenary traitor that he is. After Tad calls him a "fraud", Max threateningly silences him, demanding that they both move on, while he and the Odysseus follow the path to the objective.

As the group walks through the temple in search of the idol, the temple's guardian mummy activates a giant stone ball to crush all of them, but everyone (including Tad and Sara) manages to save themselves. Sara reproaches Max because he didn't care that she and Tad could have died, to which Max responds that her father is the only one he needs now, before asking them both to move. Moments later, they arrived at the quipu room, where the entrance to the chamber of the golden statue was located, which could be entered by pulling the correct quipu. Since Professor Lavrof doesn't want to reveal anything, Max decides to take care of it himself, but ends up pulling the wrong quipu, causing the ground to sink and several traps to activate. While Tad finds the real quipu (the red one), Max loses Kopponen and his remaining men. At that moment, the entrance to the place of the golden statue is opened and Max heads towards it, but not before mocking Tad, Sara and Professor Lavrof.

Once at the site, Max discovers the statue and runs towards it with excitement. Because the statue was blocked with glass, Max tries to break it with a stone, but suddenly, he is surprised by the Mummy, riding a huge rock golem. The Mummy attacks Max with the golem, saying that he will not allow the statue to be stole. That's when Max realizes that Mummy controlled the golem with a pair of diamonds. Taking advantage of this, Max tricks the mummy into lowering the golem towards him while pretending misericordy, Mummy does so and Max throws him off the golem. After taking over the golem, Max pursues the Mummy and Tad (who had arrived and saved the Mummy from falling into the void). Tad fights and narrowly avoids being crushed by Max; he climbs onto the golem to face Max, but is instead hit by the latter and knocked down. Max then grabs Tad and is about to crush him with the golem, when the Mummy arrives to save him. He gives Tad his amulet so he can defend himself, and Tad uses it to throw it at Max, hitting him in the forehead. This causes Max to lose control of the golem and collapse backwards, however he manages to shatter the glass protecting the statue, making it accessible to everyone.

Seeing the golden idol available, Max happily grabs it, signifying that he will achieve immortality. With Max taking over the statue, he taunts an alarmed Tad by calling him a "loser." Although it seems that Max has fulfilled his dream of being immortal, it turns out that the statue only makes those who touch it immortal by turning them into living mummies, forcing them to defend the idol as a price. As a result, Max ends up turned into a mummy, much to his horror. The protagonists are shocked by the transformation. Horrified by his grotesque appearance, Max becomes upset and demands an antidote to reverse the curse, but unfortunately for him, the condition is permanent, while Lavrof mentions that the mummies exist thanks to the statue. When Mummy asks Tad to bring Max, he threatens Tad not to even think about it, calling him "Toad". Tad angrily corrects him and grabs him by the neck to take him to the mummy council. Just at this moment, a pair of mummies from the city of Paititi appear to take Max to the darkest cell of the mummy prison, where he is going to serve a life sentence for his crimes. Max demands to be released and screams in agony as he is dragged to the mummy prison. He is last seen asking to contact the representative of his show when he appears on TV, while he is taken to the mummy prison to be imprisoned.

Personality[]

Max Mordon is introduced as a famous archaeological explorer who is admired by Tad Stones, who calls himself his "number one fan" and dreams of being like him. However, Mordon is actually an evil and corrupt mercenary who works for the evil organization called Odysseus Inc. and has the goal to search the idol of Paititi in order to achieve eternal life. Mordon even pretends to be kidnapped to hide his true plans from Professor Lavrof's daughter, Sara, to whom Max was engaged. Additionally, he was more interested in preserving his celebrity image than doing real archaeology.

After being exposed by Sara and Tad for the true mercenary that he is (causing Sara to break up with him), Max has no problem taking Tad and Sara prisoner at gunpoint an he simply continues with his objective. Max didn't care losing Kopponen and his henchmens, as he just went on to get Paititi's idol on his own. While trying to get Paititi's idol, Max takes the opportunity to steal a giant golem from the Mummy with which he almost kills Tad; but Max is ultimately defeated by Tad. As Max touches the gold statue and is about to gain immortality, he insults Tad by calling him "loser"; however, as a consequence of being inmortal, Max is turned into a Mummy, with no antidote against the curse and being locked forever in the darkest cell of the mummy prison as punishment for his actions.

Unlike his successor, Jack Rackham, Max is less evil as he is unwilling to kill his own henchmens, as well he has comical traits.

Appearance[]

Max Mordon is a tall man with dark brown hair, blue eyes, with green cargo pants and a white safari shirt with a red ascot.

Trivia[]

  • When it's thought that Max Mordon misspelled Tad's name by calling him "Toad", it's more likely an insult, considering the last scene he calls Tad "Toad" when he's a mummy. Also, Max called him that several times in the film, so he also likely knew Tad's real name as well as "Toad" being an insult.
  • It's never explained what happens with Max's program following his incarceration at Pahititi, but it can be deduced that it was cancelled after his mysterious disappearance or that it got a new host.
  • Max Mordon seems to be a parody of both René Belloq and Walter Donovan, the main antagonists of Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the first and third films of the Indiana Jones film series (which Tad, the Lost Explorer parodies): like Belloq, Mordon is a mercenary, is disregarded in the scientific community and allies with seek-artifacts organizations; and like Donovan, Mordon seeks to achieve eternal life and is interested on one of the protagonists' father, who was a renowned archaeologist (though unlike Donovan, Max actually achieved eternal life, but not as he expected).
  • Although he is the main antagonist of the first film of the series, he is much less evil than his successor, Jack Rackham.
  • Although he is stated to be serving an eternal life sentence in the prison of Pahititi at the end of the first film, Mordon is nowhere to be seen when the Mummy gets thrown into prison for returning from his exile at the credits scene of Tad, the Lost Explorer and the Secret of King Midas. However, considering that the Mummy's cell wasn't the darkest and had a window that provided daylight, it can be deduced that Max is imprisoned in another cell, the darkest, as the Mummy said in the first film.
