There's no escape for you, mortal!
~ Malak while chasing Doug.
Bierce! Still so persistent after all this time... Do not listen to her, mortal. She's just using you. Give her the ring and there will be... consequences.
~ Malak threatening Doug Houser.

Malak, originally named Spasm, is the main antagonist of the episodic indie horror videogame Dark Deception. He is a demon who controls nightmares and has a vendetta against Doug Houser and Bierce.

He is voiced by Christopher Corey Smith, who also voices the Gold Watchers, the Clown Gremlins, and Goliath Clowns in the game.

Biography[]

Malak is known demon who himself has earned his high position by fighting his many rivals for years, as he succeeded, he became the known Lord who collects souls that become shards or monsters he created.

After awhile, he was summoned by Bierce after she murdered Agatha, they made a deal for Bierce's soul as she lives her dreams for 7 years.

Once he returned, Bierce tried to steal his powers but he managed to shatter the ring into pieces, but one of them was taken by Bierce who seals herself away.

Original demo[]

Better known as "Ereshkigal" he appears in ballroom at start, as an eye on door, he doesn't pay any attention to player.

After player collects souls shards and ring, Bierce tells them to get back, once player uses elevator to return to lobby, he quickly runs but gets surrounded by Ereshkigal and Monkeys.

Its unknown how player manages to survive.

Monkey Business[]

While physically absent in the level itself, Malak's voice can be heard after collecting the ring piece. After becoming aware of Doug's presence, Malak taunts him as he escapes.

Elementary Evil[]

Malak makes his first physical encounter with Doug in the second level of the game, where he is referred to as "daddy" by Agatha.

As Doug is traveling to the southern region of the school, Malak can be seen strolling across a balcony, peering down at him and laughing before vanishing. After the ring piece is obtained, Malak appears beyond a doorway and confronts Doug, threatening to kill him. He then transforms into his phantom form and gives chase, bargaining with him for the ring piece under the promise of a swift death.

Malak will chase Doug through the first region of the school until he reaches the auditorium, phasing through any closed doorways in his way. Agatha will also join him if one of her fake portals are activated.

Deadly Decadence[]

Malak is first seen watching over the player on a balcony upon entering the manor. Similar to the previous level, Malak will then laugh and disappear.

After collecting all of the soul shards, Malak will spawn in the manor's lobby and pursue Doug through the corridors. After collecting the ring piece, all enemies in the manor will disappear, including Malak.

Upon returning to the main courtyard, Malak will appear alongside a horde of Gold Watchers and a Titan Watcher, chasing Doug alongside them as he races back to the portal. Upon returning to the entrance, Malak will appear once again, alongside a blockade of Gold Watchers in front of the portal.

Upon returning to Bierce's Ballroom, Malak offers another warning to Doug, insisting that he will suffer consequences if they were to bring Bierce all of the ring pieces. Bierce sarcastically objects to this by reminding him of his ruthless and vindictive persona, and how his reputation made him untrustworthy.

Stranger Sewers[]

After collecting the last soul shard, Malak will appear nearby and chase Doug until they obtain the ring piece from the ring altar.

Once the ring piece is collected, a cutscene will play where Malak commends Doug's resilience and tenacity. He then states that he also has a loyal pet, and opens a giant gate behind him, revealing Doom Ducky. He then taunts Bierce, who is watching through Doug's eyes, and leaves Doug to contend with the creature.

After Doug escapes the chamber and starts making his way back to the portal, Malak calls out to him in a baleful manner, shortly before Doom Ducky crashes through the wall and pursues him through the corridors.

Once Doug returns to Bierce's ballroom, Malak continues to express his frustration towards Doug, and responds to Bierce's criticism by mentioning the last person who trusted her, referring to the last owner of Doug's tablet. Displeased, Bierce merely turns around and sighs.

Crazy Carnevil[]

After collecting the last soul shard, Malak appears and chases Doug through the funhouse, disappearing as soon as he reaches the ring altar tent.

When Doug attempts to leave the carousel region, Malak confronts him once again, promising a burdensome experience. Malak then summons the four Goliath Clowns, and mockingly asks him to keep them laughing while he dies.

After Doug defeats the Goliath Clowns, a distraught Malak declares he will makes his suffering eternal. Malak pursues him once again until Doug reaches the portal.

After returning to Bierce's ballroom, Malak gives another tirade towards Bierce and Doug, promising to bring upon Doug's worst nightmares and invade Bierce's pocket dimension to reclaim his ring pieces.

Torment Therapy[]

At the start of the level Malak makes a call to the Reaper Nurses, instructing them to keep Doug from getting the ring piece. He does not appear in the level proper, explaining afterwards that he was otherwise occupied while Doug was in the level and that powerful forces are now in motion thanks to their meddling. He also mentions that he will not be distracted anymore.

Mascot Mayhem[]

Malak attempts to stop the player from pressing the reset switch in the production factory after collecting all of zone 3's shards. He reappears after the Joy Joy Gang is crushed by piston hydraulics. Activating the Joy Kill project initiative, he sends the newly formed Joy Kill to stop Doug. Upon escaping, Malak chases after Doug one last time, bringing an army of Joy Joy clones with him. Joy Kill stops Doug from leaving through the portal and Malak proceeds to enter his mind, bringing back nightmarish memories from Doug's past in order to place a seal on him. Doug is thrown right out of the nightmare by Hangry after this.

Malak successfully enters the ballroom as a result of marking Doug's mind and engages in a fight with Bierce while summoning Agatha and the previous monsters. While he manages to take the 7 ring pieces from the altar, one remains in Bierce's possession as a result of a bonding. Bierce banishes the monsters back into the portal, but Doug is forcefully taken with Malak into Bearly buried. Malak assures Bierce that she is merely delaying the inevitable.

Bearly Buried[]

Upon arriving at Mama Bear's home, Malak explains the truth about Bierce's intentions and how she bonded with the first ring piece she took from him. Malak then leaves the matter of Doug's execution to Mama Bear, who has her children drag him into the cabin. Later, Malak makes Mama Bear aware of Doug's actions in the attic, due to the marking allowing him to see through his eyes. Malak consistently stalks and torments Doug as he tries to capture and retrieve the ring pieces (Malak will shout with irritation whenever Doug uses a power). Malak's seal on Doug breaks when the mysterious orb guiding him neutralizes it at the end of the level.

Appearance[]

Malak has three currently seen forms in Dark Deception. The first form is a form he takes in Bierce's Ballroom, a massive bloodshot eyeball on a demonic looking gate. Their second form takes a far more humanoid appearance, having a red, bald head with sharp teeth, pointed ears, and horns. His hands are also claw-like, and he wears a black and red tuxedo. Their third form, sometimes called Phantom Malak, is somewhat similar to the second form, but his legs are removed, he gains a black cloak, his horns become straight, and his face "ignites", with his eyes and mouth having a fiery glow to them.

Personality[]

I'm going to enjoy watching you suffer...
~ Malak.

Malak is a rather enigmatic figure, but it is known that he has a personal vendetta against the protagonist, and has a negative relationship with Bierce. He mainly wants to stop the protagonist for helping Bierce, which he knows could weaken his power by losing the souls he has trapped in the realms. He also appears to advise the protagonist from helping Bierce, implying that she has ulterior motives.

It is known that Malak dislikes when his minions fail him, but he seems to still care about them, as shown due to his anger at the deaths of the Goliath Clowns and relationship with Agatha, which resembles a healthy father and daughter relationship. Malak does not bear any hate towards anyone except for those who broke the deal they made with him and didn't give up their soul.

Powers and Abilities[]

Malak has the ability to shapeshift between three main forms (The Door, The Demon, and The Phantom.), has the ability to levitate in his Phantom form, and can phase through solid objects. He also seemingly has the ability to teleport, as he can warp from one point to another. He also has complete control over the nightmare realms the player visits and the monsters that reside in them. Malak also can not have his position revealed or stunned by the soul shards, which normally work against the other enemies. It was revealed that Malak has telepathy as he can see through Doug's eyes and even communicate with him (for a short period of time).

According to Malak himself in Bearly Buried, the powers that Doug has been using throughout the game all belong to him.

That's far enough, mortal. You know, you're the first of Bierce's pets to actually cause me some trouble. I should commend you for your tenacity. Well, commendable as you may be, I'm afraid your little streak ends here. Fortunately, watching you run obediently reminds me that I have a loyal pet as well. Here, let me introduce you, so you can both be properly acquainted! Now, you'll have to excuse me. I must leave. Business call elsewhere. Oh, and Bierce... I know you're there, peering through your little puppet. I'll be settling matters with you very soon.
~ Malak before unleashing the Doom Ducky.
You're not out yet, mortal.
~ Malak to Doug when the Doom Ducky resumes chase.
It vexes me greatly that you're still here mortal. Now she has another piece of that infernal ring. Every piece Bierce gets makes her more powerful. Don't you get that, meat sack? What do you think is going to happen when she doesn't need you anymore?

~ Malak before summoning the Goliath Clowns.
No! Impossible! Mortal... Your suffering will be eternal!
~ Malak angered at Doug's success before chasing them after the Goliath Clown's defeat.
You're only delaying the inevitable, Bierce. You can't keep me out of your little pocket dimension forever.

You are becoming quite opportunistic, mortal. How fortunate for you that I was already occupied with more pressing matters. That will not happen again. Thanks to the two of you, dangerous forces are now in motion. You are disrupting my business and I cannot afford to allow your insolence to continue any longer.
~ Malak upon the completion of Torment Therapy.
Not so fast, Mortal! Don't celebrate just yet. After all, that's not even their final form. Time for something new and improved!

Malak: I can see that, excellent work. How the mighty have fallen, eh mortal? I told you this would end badly for you. No use resisting. You're going to show me everything, whether you want to or not.
~ Malak after Lucky and the Joy Joy Gang hand over Doug.
Now we can get to know each other a little bit better.... Lets see what horrors lie in that little brain of yours, shall we? That's better. I'll be stepping in for Bierce for this process. You don't mind, do you? Let's see what secrets lie in the dark recesses of your memory.
~ Malak searches through Doug's mind.
Keep going. We're not done yet.
~ Malak forcing Doug to continue through his memories.
A family home, how charming... Who's the cowering little girl? You're daughter? How interesting... Not the daughter you wanted though. A defect. Damaged. The same as her mother...
~ Malak reading Doug's former thoughts on his daughter.
They really killed the joy in your life, didn't they? That must've been a terrible burden for you. So you were not the best family man, not much of a secret. This is small potatoes, where's the real meat?
~ Malak taunting Doug about how he treated his family before continuing through his memories.
Till death do you part, eh? So much for wedding vows, I can't say I blame you, they were all upgrades, weren't they? There's no shame in indulging yourself. You only live once.
~ Malak taunts Doug on his infidelity.
Ah, now we're getting warmer. Doug Houser, how pathetic. So this is what you really look like. Quite the contrast. Your soul looks so much younger. Is that how you see yourself on the inside? Must be the narcissism. Nice blood ritual! Did you look that up online? Quite a desperate act. What motivated you to do it? Was it, the cancer? Or something else? Something more painful perhaps... Tell me, Doug. What's really eating away at your soul? Why are you so full of regret? Show me.
~ Malak learns Doug's name and continues to taunt him while going further into his memories.
Ah, there it is! Let's go deeper and have a look, shall we?
~ Malak finds the memory of the accident.
Well now! This is more like it! Don't back away Doug. Come closer... (gasps) What's down there in the water Doug? A car? Is that them? Is that your family? How tragic... But why would you feel regret for that? You hated them didn't you? Accidents do happen, you can't blame yourself for that. Unless... was it REALLY an accident? Did you have something to do with it, Doug? What did you do...
~ Malak further torments Doug with the accident that killed his wife and daughter, the accident he mistakingly caused.
It's time to wake up, Tammy! Your dear father came all this way to see you! Ah, there she is... Ooh, I can see why you were so disappointed in her Doug. Not much to look at. Below average in almost every way... It must've been embarrassing to call such a disappointing girl your daughter. After all, a man as great and accomplished as yourself deserved better... No? Am I wrong? What do you think, Tammy?
~ Malak summons a twisted manifestation of Tammy to torment Doug.
Go give your daddy a big hug. I think he wants to tell you he's sorry...(Laughs evily)!
~ Malak sends the manifestation of Tammy to attack Doug.
You’re my puppet now, mortal. And I’ve got a job for you.
~ Malak marks Doug’s mind.
It's done. Just a little present for Bierce, go ahead and toss him back. Time for Bierce to finally pay what is owed.
~ Malak orders the Joy Joy Gang to throw Doug back through the portal after marking his mind.

Trivia[]

  • In the first devlog for the game, Malak is seen chasing the player throughout a flaming ballroom, leaving some to speculate that he is the final boss of the game.
  • Malak's name strangely translates to "Angel" in Arabic.
  • Since Agatha calls Malak her "daddy", and by her conversation with him, it's possible that Malak is the father of Agatha, although Vince said himself that Malak could also just view her as a tool.
  • Seeing how Malak himself has a large collection of souls and command over powerful monsters, it's possible that he is the equivalent of Satan in the Dark Deception universe.
  • In the game files of Alpha version Malak is named "Ereshkigal" and a texture of poster where demon is on it can be found that reads "Lord Ereshkigal sees all" this states that Malak's original name was indeed Ereshkigal.
