Don't you see? I will never do what's right. The evil in my blood can never go away. It has corrupted every ounce of my fiber, every bone in my body. I am Lord Garmadon. Destiny took my family from me, and the only way for us to be together is to turn everything in this world into my image. Then you'll all see what I see, feel what I feel!
~ Garmadon to his family members.
I've played many roles. Worn many masks. Father. Husband. Brother. Teacher. But only one was summoned back… Destroyer!
~ Garmadon, proclaiming to his son Lloyd that despite all of the roles he's played, only the role of destroyer was brought back from the dead.

No, no, no! Terrible times INFINITY! I would have an easier time teaching dogs how to speak! I've been to the Realm of Madness, the Underworld, the Cursed, the Departed Realm. But I have never found myself in a situation more hopeless than this! It's like you want Ninjago to fall to the Overlord! Harumi would at least have understood what I was getting at!
~ Garmadon, trying to explain to Lloyd about the benefits of using anger.

Lord Garmadon is the First Spinjitzu Master's firstborn son, Wu's older brother, Misako's husband, and Lloyd Garmadon's father. Although he initially served as the ninja's archenemy by wanting to possess the four Weapons of Spinjitzu to recreate Ninjago in his own image, he eventually became an invaluable ally of theirs after Lloyd defeated the Overlord in the final battle and his father was purified of the Great Devourer's venom. Garmadon sought to atone for his crimes and become a better person in general.

He became known as Master Garmadon to the ninja, teaching them whenever his brother wasn't available. He fought the Nindroid army alongside his family and students, and later accompanied the ninja to Chen's island where the Tournament of Elements was taking place. On the island, Garmadon helped the ninja and the other Elemental Masters battle the Anacondrai Cultists, with him performing a sacrifice to release the Anacondrai generals from the Cursed Realm and take the souls of the imposters with them.

Though Garmadon perished when Nya drowned the Preeminent, Lloyd honored his father's legacy by wearing his robes and taking up the role of Master.

In time, however, a criminal syndicate known as the Sons of Garmadon, led by the Jade Princess Harumi, wanted to resurrect the evil/Oni side of him, as Harumi believed that Garmadon was the "rightful ruler" of Ninjago for destroying the Great Devourer, which killed her birth parents. The biker gang succeeded in their plan, and a soulless, power-hungry version of Garmadon was resurrected from the Departed Realm. By illegitimately taking power, he became known as Emperor Garmadon, and oppressed the citizens of Ninjago City. However, with his son Lloyd leading a resistance against the Sons of Garmadon, he was able to defeat his father using the Art of the Silent Fist, by "fighting without fighting" - a lesson Garmadon himself taught him. Before he was sent to prison, however, Garmadon warned Lloyd that a darkness would soon enter Ninjago.

Not long after, the Oni entered Ninjago through the Realm Crystal and began to spread Darkness and petrify any person caught in their cloud. With no other option, Lloyd and the ninja were forced to free Garmadon from prison to help them battle the Oni. Although he refused to partake in the Tornado of Creation, he changed his mind once a tentacle of darkness covered Lloyd's face on the mural of history. After the Oni were vanquished, Garmadon left the Monastery of Spinjitzu to embark a journey of self-discovery, but not before giving Wu one last look.

During the ninja's many adventures following the Oni's invasion, Garmadon began living in Ninjago City, where he moved into Vinny Folson's apartment. He began to wonder if there was more to life than just surviving, and remembering the words that Vinny Folson of NGTV News told him onboard the Destiny's Bounty about the things that made life worth living, the four-armed warlord arrived at Vinny's apartment and moved in. Vinny gifted Garmadon a plant, whom he affectionately called Christofern, and began to change as a person.

When Lloyd and Wu were following a trail of clues about a series of news clippings that Wu had been receiving in the mail, uncle and nephew found that the sender had been Garmadon all along. When confronted about this, Garmadon revealed that he knew the Overlord would return back one day, and wanted to warn his brother and son about the Dark Lord's inevitable comeback. He explained to them that he had been learning about empathy, and though he swore an oath of non-fighting, Garmadon changed his mind once a Dragonide destroyed the wall of the apartment, and damaged Christofern. From there, Garmadon assisted Wu, Lloyd, the ninja, and the rest of the Resistance fighting against the Vengestone army.

Lloyd and Garmadon eventually made their way to the top of the floating temple, where they fought against the Overlord and Harumi. However, they were easily overpowered by the Overlord, and the malevolent entity spitefully revealed to Lloyd, Garmadon and Harumi that he was the one who corrupted the Great Devourer and sent it against Garmadon, thus putting his millennia-long plan into motion. Upon hearing this, Harumi had a change of heart and turned against the Overlord and fought him alongside Lloyd and Garmadon. In an effort to get Lloyd to unlock his Oni form, Garmadon pretended to be dead. His father's "death" was enough to get Lloyd to transform into his Oni form, but only for a very short period of time. Despite the Overlord's fleeting victory, he was defeated by a tail swipe from the Golden Ultra Dragon, and Garmadon stopped playing dead, and rode on the dragon's back down to Ninjago City along with Lloyd and Harumi before the floating temple exploded. Later on, Garmadon planted Christofern a nearby mountain and helped Lloyd rebuild the Monastery of Spinjitzu, with him offering his son a wooden beam and giving the Green Ninja a genuine smile, showing that he had repaired relationships with his family members.

Ninjago[]

Garmadon and Wu had a close bond when they were children. They would often train together in their home, the Monastery of Spinjitzu. One day, they had decided to train using two katanas. Garmadon had knocked Wu's katana over the walls of the monastery. Garmadon told Wu to go retrieve it, to which Wu refused. Garmadon told Wu not to "Put off what can be done today," and went to go retrieve it himself. Garmadon climbed the walls and spotted the katana near a bush. He reached to grab it, when suddenly, a snake had bitten him on the hand. The venom left Garmadon unconscious. The First Spinjitzu Master eventually found Garmadon and took him away to aid him. The snake's venom had affected Garmadon's personality, making him more aggressive. The snake that had bitten Garmadon was known as the "Great Devourer," a snake that would grow bigger each time it would consume. Garmadon died in the finale of Season 5 but got resurrected in Season 8.
