“ | This world is rotten, and those who are making it rot deserve to die. Someone has to do it, so why not me? Even if it means sacrificing my own mind and soul, it's worth it. Because the world... can't go on like this. I wonder... what if someone else had picked up this notebook? Is there anyone out there other than me who'd be willing to eliminate the vermin from the world? If I don't do it, then who will? That's just it: there's no one. But I can do it. In fact, I'm the only one who can. I'll do it. Using the Death Note, I'll change the world. | „ |
~ Light Yagami's goals. |
“ | If we catch Kira, he is evil. If he rules the world, he is justice. | „ |
~ Light Yagami to the Task Force. |
“ | I'm a hardworking honors student who's considered to be one of Japan's best and brightest. And I... I will become the God of this new world. | „ |
~ Light Yagami expresses his own goal. |
Light Yagami is the protagonist of the Death Note franchise.
He was a Japanese high school senior who found a Death Note, a mysterious notebook that would kill anyone whose name was written in it. Initially skeptical of its abilities, Light tested the notebook on two criminals. After realising that it worked, Light decided to use the notebook as a murder weapon to eliminate all crime and create a utopia with only the law-abiding people he accepts and make himself the proclaimed God of this new world. In addition, he was being accompanied by the notebook's original owner, the Shinigami named Ryuk.
Throughout his journey, he globally became known as "Kira" (a mysterious figure who anonymously murdered criminals) and continued his work for the next few years, while trying to evade capture. Obsessed with his goal, he used and even murdered a lot of innocent people. Although Light got most of the world under his control, his reign came to an end when he got cornered by the Japanese police, and eventually, Light died of a heart attack when Ryuk wrote his name in his Death Note.
The series charts Light's use of the notebook and his struggles with the Japanese police, the detectives L, Mello, and Near, as well as his associations with other notebook users, such as Misa Amane and Teru Mikami. It also demonstrates his evolution from a noble extremist into a sociopathic mass murderer.
In the anime, Light was voiced by Mamoru Miyano in the Japanese version, who also voiced Doma in Demon Slayer, Shuu Tsukiyama in Tokyo Ghoul, Chrollo Lucilfer in Hunter X Hunter and Prince Diamond in Sailor Moon Crystal. He was voiced by Brad Swaile in the English dubbed version, who also voiced Jin Kazama in Street Fighter X Tekken, Rock in Black Lagoon, Twin Masters in Hero: 108, and Brent "Slappy" Ernst in Dead Rising 2.
In the live-action film series, he was portrayed by Tatsuya Fujiwara who played Shishio Makoto while Brad Swaile reprised his role on the dub.
Personality[]
Old Personality[]
Light did not start as a murderous god wannabe and vigilante. He was a sympathetic and popular, yet depressed student who was bored with his life, with real concerns about fixing the world of its various injustices and believed that the world was "rotten" because of the evil people in it. He regained his old personality upon giving up ownership of the Death Note. However, even then, he agreed with the principles of "Kira".
It is upon discovering the Death Note and seeing its deadly effects, Light went mad with its power while believing himself to be the "chosen one" who would eradicate all the people he deems to be evil and hope to become the God of the new world (even after Ryuk explicitly stated multiple times during the story that he randomly dropped the book somewhere in the world).
Current Personality[]
“ | My dad? Ha... you mean Soichiro Yagami... that's right, Matsuda. In this world, all those earnest people like him fight for justice! They always lose! You want a world where people like that are made to be fools?! I know you understand, so kill the others! Shoot them! | „ |
~ Light Yagami trying to convince Matsuda to kill the others. |
Light is an unfeeling sociopath who is only driven by his immense hatred of criminals and is ready to do anything in order to become nothing less of a living deity. He has a self-centered personality, as he created the identity of Kira in order to lead a cult devoted to himself, even though his followers were unaware of him being their savior. He even planned to kill unhealthy or lazy people once he became a God in order to build a strong, disciplined utopian society based on a eugenics ideology, even though he did not hold supremacist views.
He is an extremely clever, psychopathic, and sly master manipulator who can easily act as an innocent and friendly individual in public who would never kill someone, while secretly killing dozens or hundreds of people each night. He was able to convince Misa that he cared about her and that he was grateful for everything that she'd done for him when he only thought of her as a pawn which he'd kill once she outlived her usefulness. He was also able to fool Takada, a much more clever woman, into being his “queen” and thinking that he loved her, when it turns out, like Misa, he only thought of her as a pawn, as seen he killed her without hesitation when the opportunity arose to kill Mello and to prevent her from revealing any secrets about Kira. A criminal mastermind, he often elaborated unbelievably complicated schemes to compensate for his lack of henchmen, involving pretty much nearly everyone around him.
He is also shown to be a sadist; though he is not explicitly aroused by the act of giving death, he is sometimes shown smiling devilishly, hinting at his vicious tendencies. Such an instance is seen when he kills Naomi: after she prepares to commit suicide, Light mockingly tells her that his father's cellphone is available while smiling, solely doing this for pleasure. He also could barely contain his laughter during his final confrontation with Near when he thought that everyone in the room would die, demonstrating the sadistic pleasure he took in their deaths and his would-be victory.
He is also shown to be delusional in his quest, believing himself to be doing everything in the name of justice and justifying all of the deaths of criminals, police, even his closest allies such as Takada, as necessary to complete his goals and change the “rotten” world. When Ryuk claims that even after all the world's criminals are dead, Light would be the last criminal left to which the teenager rebuked and viewed as ridiculous.
As he continued his crusade as Kira, he became an ungrateful, hypocritical and egocentric dictator, viewing people (i.e., his fanatical followers, his devoted henchmen, friends, relatives, his father or even his lover and second Kira Misa Amane who saved his life multiple times (although she almost ruined his plan due to her stupidity)) as mere tools in his quest for godhood.
He doesn't express fear while speaking with Ryuk or others Shinigamis, despite their mysterious and murderous nature, as well as their immense magical powers. Light does fear instead L Lawliet, the enigmatic and genius detective from the Task Force - and the only character in Death Note who's at least as intelligent and sly as Light. Upon their first encounter, L was at first glance suspicious of Light being Kira, but soon befriended the latter (even though he kept strong suspicions about Light's "secret hobby"). Light would use this to gain the upper hand through his most extraordinary scheme involving Misa Amane, thus eventually killing him with no second thought; he went so far as to shout on his tomb that he "won" and nothing would stop him now.
He temporarily regained his old personality when he turned amnesiac; though this did not last long, as upon recovering the Death Note as well as his memories, Light turned into an even more sadistic and manipulative Machiavellian.
Despite his heightened intelligence and calculating nature, Light's arrogance and overconfidence are his greatest weaknesses. It was seen in his final confrontation with Near, where he boastfully claimed he won before everyone was supposed to die, which only further proved his identity as Kira. Claiming to be a living divinity, Light getting murdered by Ryuk showed that he was nothing more than an insane mass murderer at the very end, and not the god he thought he had soon become.
Underneath his calm, collected and intelligent demeanor also lies the heart of a coward: upon being revealed as Kira by Near, he rushes in fear upon trying to be handcuffed, and when he tries to at least kill everyone in the room with a piece of the Death Note, he frantically tries to get Matsuda to kill the others, even though Light was prepared to kill him just moments before. After he was shot, he flailed like a worm on the floor, and in a futile attempt told Mikami to write down the names of the detectives, even though Mikami didn't have the Death Note, and desperately calls out for Misa and Takada, even though both are not there.
Light's last act of cowardice until his death differs between the manga and anime; in the manga, Light remorselessly sends other people to their death. However, when his own death comes as Ryuk writes Light's name using the same method he uses to kill others, he gets terrified and screams that he doesn't want to die. He even tells Ryuk to reverse the process even though he knows full well that it cannot be reversed. He then died pathetically screaming and crying. In the anime, he flees when Mikami distracts everyone in the room and shows some semblance of regret for his actions, having envisioned a life he could have lived if he hadn't found the Death Note in the first place. Rather than fearing for his death, he silently and peacefully accepted his fate when Ryuk writes his name and as he slowly passes away, he sees a figure of L looming over him.
Light's Reincarnation Theory[]
There is a popular theory that the unnamed Shinigami featured in the anime OVA, Death Note Relight 1, is the reincarnation of Light Yagami. Arguments to support the Reincarnation Theory are:
- He wears a coat that looks very similar to the one Light was wearing when he died which also looks to be stained with what could be blood.
- He sports a red tie around his head that's similar to the tie of Light's high school uniform.
- He carries a messenger bag, almost identical to the one Light often carried with him when he was in high school.
- The Shinigami's mouth is shaped like Light's "Kira" smile.
- Light also stands in the Shinigami Realm during the end of the second intro sequence- a possible foreshadowing of his reincarnation.
- The Unnamed Shinigami also sports goggles, which could allude to the fact that Light never made the deal for Shinigami Eyes.
- The way he tosses the apple to Ryuk, as Light did when alive.
- He walks with something of a limp, which could be related to the injuries Light sustained when shot several times by Matsuda.
- Ryuk himself has some vague dialogue that could be interpreted as him referring to the Unnamed Shinigami as Light: After looking at his own Death Note, Ryuk speaks to Light as if he were there; "You were not God. You were just... gone already?" This could mean Ryuk was addressing the unnamed Shinigami as Light.
- Ryuk also allegedly addresses the Shinigami as Light when he asks "Wouldn't you agree, Light?" at the very end of the special.
- The Shinigami doesn't stay to hear the end of the story, which could imply he already knows how it ends.

Death Note: The Musical[]
Light plays roughly the same role as his anime/manga counterpart in the Japanese and Korean stage musical adaptations. However, instead of being imprisoned to clear his name, he instead confronts L and kills him by writing his name in the Death Note, planning to frame L as being Kira. However, after Light triumphs, Ryuk decides that he is no longer entertaining and writes down his name and kills him. Light sings eight songs in the show.
Othellonia[]
Light Yagami appears as a playable character in Othellonia due to a crossover event involving Death Note.

~ Light Yagami eating potato chips. |
“ | In all things, one cannot win with defense alone. To win, you must attack. | „ |
~ Light during a tennis match against L. |
“ | In this world, there are very few people who actually trust each other, and it's no different for the police, you know. What's especially important is that L and the investigators don't trust each other at all. Think about it. Could you trust someone whose name and face you don't even know? When L discovers that I'm somehow getting confidential information, he'll be obligated to start investigating the police to find the source of the leak. When that happens, it'll only be a matter of time before the police start resenting him. On the surface, it will appear that L and the investigation team are working together to try to catch me, but in reality L will investigate the police and they will be investigating L. I'm not the one who's gonna find L. I can let the police do that for me; and when they do, that's when I'll eliminate him. | „ |
~ Light to Ryuk about L and the Task Force. |
“ | I'll arrange for her to meet L. She'll tell me his name and then I'll eliminate the entire task force; and, when that's done, I'll kill her, too. After all, she's the only person who knows Kira's true identity. The only one. I can't let her live much longer. | „ |
~ Light to himself about Misa. |
“ | Do these look like the eyes of someone who is lying? | „ |
~ Light Yagami |
“ | What're you gonna do, Rem? You may be a shinigami but you can't hide the fact that you care for Misa. There's no way you would turn your back on her now after she's already halved her lifespan twice. Come on. Think about Misa's happiness. | „ |
~ Light Yagami to Rem. |
“ | Mr. President, I am very grateful that you and your country have sympathized with me, but I'm afraid, even that much is not enough. The SPK is still trying to catch me despite your recent announcement. I want you to stop them immediately and formally disband them. At the same time, I want you to use the American police, the CIA, the FBI, and all other law enforcement organizations at your disposal to find out where the SPK members are currently hiding. As soon as you've found their base of operations, I want you to forward that information to a third party. I will give you this contact shortly. Mr. President, whether you live a long life or not is up to you. Don't forget that. | „ |
~ Light to the president of the United States, disguised as Kira. |
“ | So this whole thing will be nothing more than a contest between L and me, a match of wits. On the surface, we'll be two friendly classmates, but in reality, we'll actually be investigating each other. This is interesting, Ryuk. If it's my friendship you want? I'll gladly accept it. In time I'll earn your trust. And once you've told me what I want to know, there'll be no point keeping you alive, then I'll kill you — with my hands if I have to. | „ |
~ Light to Ryuk regarding L. |
“ | Just as planned... | „ |
~ Light Yagami |
“ | Well, Near, looks like I win. | „ |
~ Light after thinking he beat Near. |
“ | That's right, I am Kira. | „ |
~ Light revealing himself after Near discovers his true identity. |
“ | Hear this: I'm not only Kira, but I'm also God of the new world! | „ |
~ Light Yagami to Near and the Task Force. |
“ | Under normal circumstances, humans should have continued to evolve as the greatest creatures upon this earth, but we were actually regressing. A rotten world. Politics, law, education... Was there anybody around who could correct this world? But someone had to do it. | „ |
~ Light hypocritically shaming the world. |
“ | I understood that killing people was a crime. There was no other way! The world had to be fixed! A purpose given to me! Only I could do it. Who else could have done it, and come this far? Would they have kept going? The only one... who can create a new world... is me. | „ |
~ Light trying to justify his methods. |
“ | Shit.... | „ |
~ Light's last words (in the manga). |
What makes him Pure Evil[]
In All Versions[]
- Killed the death row convict Lind L. Tailor who was pretending to be L in anger when the convict called Light evil (though Lind was indeed a criminal, Light wasn't aware of it at first, so he could've easily killed an innocent simply because he said what he was doing is wrong).
- Murdered the FBI agents recruited to investigate the Japanese police by manipulating Raye Penber into writing the names of his colleagues on pages from the Death Note, and later murdered Naomi Misora to stop her from revealing how Light figured out Raye Penber's name.
- Psychologically manipulated and abused Misa Amane through her undying love and loyalty towards Kira, constantly feigning affection and using her love to submit to him, even planning to have her killed once she'd outlived her usefulness since she knew his true identity. He even went out of his way to yell at her for simply questioning his orders during a mission.
- Mockingly asked Naomi Misora if she wanted his phone number to contact him even though she'd already been sentenced to her death by the Death Note purely for pleasure.
- Passed the notebook to an unsavory business executive to establish an alibi for being Kira, in the process tricking his amnesiac self into searching out the notebook through the executive's notebook-induced murders.
- He then secretly killed Kyosuke Higuchi (although he deserved it) after he got his memories back as Kira by touching the Death Note and smiled at his death.
- He also murdered the rest of the Yotsuba group, who wanted to redeem themselves after the Yotsuba Kira was arrested, as well as two ex-convicts who L recruited to help investigate Yotsuba.
- In the manga, he killed Aiber by giving him liver cancer, resulting in him dying in a hospital surrounded by his family.
- Manipulated Rem into forfeiting her own life by killing L by exploiting her love for Misa Amane.
- Gleefully watched as L died while appearing to act shocked, and maniacally laughed when standing in front of L's grave once everyone had left, madly proclaiming his victory against his closest friend.
- Planned to kill Hitoshi Demegawa, his spokesman, when he outlived his usefulness, and had Mikami not killed him, Light would have likely done this when the opportunity arose. Admittedly though, Demegawa was an incredibly vain and greedy man who often used Kira as a means to promote his own agenda, and everyone on the Kira task force believed he deserved it.
- When Sayu Yagami was taken hostage by Mello, Mello demanded a ransom payment in the form of the Death Note. During the ransom exchange, Light was willing to write Sayu Yagami, his own sister's name in the Death Note to prevent his father from handing over the Death Note to Mello. Although Light didn't go through with it, it was revealed he didn't because killing her would've raised suspicion towards himself.
- When his father was on the verge of death, he prioritized getting Mello's name from him over saying goodbye, and although he cried during his death, it's more than likely this was just an act. Even if it was genuine, he would later subvert it when he derided his own father as a fool in the finale.
- Manipulated Kiyomi Takada into working with him under the guise that she would be his "queen", but when Mello kidnapped Takada, Light ordered her to write down Mello's name using a hidden piece of the Death Note. Light promised her he'd come rescue her, but in reality, he wrote her name in the Death Note by having her burn herself and the building she was in to remove any evidence without any hint of sympathy or regret.
- He threatened to kill the President of the United States, George Sairas, over the phone while disguised as Kira if he opposes his actions.
- Prepared to kill every member of the Task Force with whom he'd known and worked with for several years, taking sadistic pleasure in believing he'd be victorious.
- When Light lost, he cowardly attempted to persuade Touta Matsuda to kill the others, disgracing his father by calling him a fool, and when he refused, he tried to write down their names with a hidden piece of notebook in his watch.
- In the manga, he pathetically begged Ryuk to kill the Special Provision for Kira members after being shot before Ryuk kills Light instead.
- While there are some moments where Light showed some standards, such as being utterly disgusted at the way Misa killed several police officers (which according to the author, was the reason Light acted so cold with her), and disagreeing with Mikami's idea of punishing criminals who already served their time and had reformed or killing lazy people, Light has shown willingness to kill police officers and anyone who gets in his way and even planned to follow through with Mikami's plan of killing lazy people once all his enemies and all criminals were dead. If anything, it just makes him worse due to his absolute hypocrisy.
- Given that Light only treated his allies as nothing but mere pawns, it can be assumed that he would eventually betray and kill Mikami sooner or later, once Mikami has outlived his usefulness.
- Though one could argue that his actions did manage to decrease crime and that his ultimate goal was to eliminate everything rotten in the world to create a better world, this desire for justice eventually shifts into a lust for power. He gradually lost whatever redeeming qualities he once had, and his quest for justice merely became an excuse to grab power and be worshiped by everyone as Kira, the god of the new world, to the point that he actually viewed himself as a god. He viewed himself as justice, scoffing at Ryuk's suggestion that he'd be the only criminal left if Light succeeded in his goals. He was willing to sacrifice whoever it took to win while watching the deaths of his enemies with sadistic glee, and has no excuse for his later actions.
- While his personality during his amnesiac period suggests that the Death Note has a corrupting influence over those who use it, there's no evidence that this is actually true. And even if it was, Light's behavior is still unique among Death Note users:
- According to Ryuk, Light was not the first human to use a Death Note, but he was the first to have written as many names as he did. Though this could be due to the internet making information accessible from anywhere in the world, Light's declaration during his first meeting with Ryuk of his intention to become God of a new world paints him outside the scope of what Near considers normal human reactions to the Death Note:
- Near believes that a truly decent person would never use the Death Note if they knew it was real, and anyone who uses a Death Note would do so for their own self interest. As evident by Light's father hesitating to write Mello's name in the Death Note, the Yotsuba Kira using the Death Note for the benefit of his company, and Misa, Takada, and Mikami using Death Notes to endear themselves to the original Kira, Near's assessment was well-founded.
===Exclusive to the film series ===*In his most infamous moral event horizon, Light had organized the death of his innocent girlfriend, Shiori, and took pride in how he perfectly intertwined the fates of Naomi and Shiori. This act was so callous Ryuk himself drops his comedic antics to voice his disgust when Light gloats about this to him. Even when L brings up this notion when he was pretending to Soichiro's helpful son to the task force, he doesn't even feel offended by this due to how he views this as his master stroke of brilliance.
- When it seems L is dead, Light uses the Death Note to kill his dad without hesitation. When Misa, his most loyal follower, voices her shock at this, Light tells her to shut up.
- When he is outed, Light orders Ryuk to write the names of everyone on the Task Force, cackling like a madman when it seemed that he did.
- He sets up a video tape in the event of his death to inspire anyone who finds it to take up his role and go much further as the new Kira than Light ever did to fulfill his dark vision for the world. The film's post-credit scene even implies Light is back from the dead and has organized all the bloodshed in the film.
- He sets up Teru Mikami to raise his son to be the new Kira upon his death, forcing his dark legacy onto him.
Trivia[]
- Light's last name "Yagami" is also the last name of Hikari in the Japanese version of Digimon, whose crest is the Crest of Light. Also, his nickname "Kira" is an anagram of "Kari", which is Hikari's English name.
- In a pair of four-panel omake chapters in the manga, Light is shown to soften his heart around Christmas time, even dressing as Santa Claus and giving out presents. However, his generosity only goes so far, as he will not get Ryuk the Gameboy Advance SP he wants because it is too expensive and Shinigami do not celebrate Christmas.
- Both his actors Tatsuya Fujiwara and Masataka Kubota have stared in Rurouni Kenshin movies where Fujiwara played Shishio Makoto and Kubota as ill-fated Akira Kiyosato.
- Light's relationship with L is similar to Judas' relationship with Jesus. The scene where L massages Light's feet highlights this as it was a reference to Jesus washing Judas's feet, aware of his betrayal and that his demise was coming soon.
- Despite serving as the main villain of the series, he has been gone on to become of the most prominent characters of the official Anime Heroes franchise, alongside Ryuk and L Lawliet, featured in countless merchandise and hero-related media.
- Light's writing style in the Death Note anime is writing eight vertical rows of names on two pages, four rows on each page, totaling in 304 names on both pages.
- His Manga and Live Action versions qualify as Pure Evil while the Manga and Netlix have redeeming features
