Kevin C. Cucumber is the minor antagonist of the animated series, SpongeBob SquarePants. The leader of the group known as “Jellyspotters” that made his first appearance in the episode “I’m Your Biggest Fanatic”, it was revealed that SpongeBob was a huge fan of his. This is due to the fact that Jellyspotters itself is the premier Jellyfish enthusiast club. Despite his popularity however, Kevin himself is an arrogant, pompous and elitist bully who attempts to make SpongeBob’s life a living hell as possible for his own amusement. It is possible that Kevin himself is an allegory of how some of the people that the fans idolize can also turn out to be an imperfect, rotten human being from the inside.
He is voiced by Dee Bradley Baker who is also known for voicing other SpongeBob villains such as Bubble Bass and The Con Man. In addition, he also voiced other characters in other medium such as Admiral Trench in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Admiral Konstantine in Star Wars: Rebels, Crosshair in Star Wars: The Bad Batch, and Klaus Heissler in American Dad!.
Appearance[]
Kevin takes the appearance of a heavily stylized sea cucumber, blending elements of the animal with the vegetable it's named after. As such, Kevin has an oblong, bright green body dotted with small bumps, with his face consisting of eyes covered by his circular, dark blue gasses, a drooping nose, pronounced, pink lips, and large eyebrows. For clothing, Kevin wears a simplistic, yellow crown-shaped tentacle that is revealed to be a part of his body much like the Sea Cucumber in real life, brown shorts, and black and white dress shoes. While cartoonish normally, a close-up reveals that Kevin's pants yellow stitches and has numerous accessories attached to it befitting of his role (such as a belt adorned with a jellyfish-shaped buckle with "JS" inscribed onto it, a button with a jellyfish on it, a pink tag with "JELLY" written onto it, and a jellyfish-shaped keychain), with his shoes also possessing red laces. Oddly, while absent from his base design, Kevin also is shown wearing light brown socks coated in jellyfish in the same close-up.
Personality[]
Throughout the I’m Your Biggest Fanatic episode, Kevin himself is portrayed as an unpleasant and arrogant jerk most of the time, thinking everyone is beneath him. His arrogance can be shown during the first parts of his appearance where he brags about how he uses composite materials in his net handle. Thanks to his unpleasant behavior, Kevin can be shown as a sadistic person as well. This is due to the fact that Kevin has no hesitations to see anyone beneath him suffer such as SpongeBob who show nothing but incessant reverence towards him. This can be shown through Kevin’s motivation where he attempts to electrocute SpongeBob so that he could go home cry like a baby for his own amusement while also having no hesitations to ditch his biggest fan by pushing them down through the cliff. Despite his seemingly unpleasant and arrogant attitude, once the chips are down as Kevin and his cohorts are facing a big trouble, he then reveals his true self to be nothing but a sniveling coward, having his ego being torn to shreds. This is evidenced with the scene where Kevin shows his vulnerable and humane side after he and his cohorts were trapped in a cave after they accidentally enraged King Jellyfish, saying that he’s just on the Jellyspotter for the fashion. In addition, Kevin is shown to be a very unlucky person despite the fact that he was bringing it to himself. This can be shown where he ended up getting stung by Jellyfishes that SpongeBob had caught as he attempted to reject his appeal to join the Jellyspotters. During the end minutes of the “I’m Your Biggest Fanatic” episode, it is also shown that Kevin is also an ungrateful person even after he was saved. This can be shown where after SpongeBob saved Kevin, he instead rejected SpongeBob’s offer to join which causes his cohorts to get angry at him and ripped his tentacle that looks like a crown, even if in reality it was a part of his head, and give it to SpongeBob, signaling his downfall in the end.
Biography[]
Kevin was first introduced alongside the group of a nerdy anchovies besides him that ended up becoming the member of the Jellyspotters in the Jellyfish Convention center answering several questions of a crowd that were swarming his stand, with him bragging about the materials that he use for his Jellyfishing Net. After discovering the Jellyspotters and Kevin, SpongeBob becomes enamored by them due to the fact that the Jellyspotters were the premier Jellyfish enthusiast club. As SpongeBob aims to get Kevin’s wisdom, Patrick was seemingly unenthusiastic by the idea as he found them to be geeky. When Patrick was busy chasing Jeffrey the Jellyfish in order to touch him, SpongeBob then approaches Kevin and his group. Seemingly annoyed by SpongeBob's excessive and creepy adoration, Kevin initially wanted to call the security to get rid of him. However, as SpongeBob decided to do whatever Kevin told him to do such as punching himself in the face or jumping off the building, Kevin then devises an idea by letting SpongeBob join his group instead. It was then revealed the reason why Kevin let SpongeBob join his group was not out of altruism, but it was revealed that he wanted to see SpongeBob’s face after he got stung by Jellyfish to the point he went home like a baby for his own amusement.
After joining the Jellyspotters group, SpongeBob and the Jellyspotters then went into the Jellyfish Fields with SpongeBob carrying the Jellyspotters with his back. After SpongeBob expresses his enthusiastic behavior joining the Jellyspotters, Kevin then decides to arrange a test for him by capturing a jellyfish so that SpongeBob could join the group. After Kevin and the anchovies manage to see how SpongeBob manages to capture the jellyfish easier due to the fact that the jellyfish came after him, Kevin instantly rejects it and increases the requirement of capturing Jellyfish. This causes Kevin to get stung several times by the Jellyfish. Despite his attempts to get SpongeBob stung such as spreading Jellyfish jelly to him or capturing Jellyfish with a blind eye, Kevin still got his several body parts relentlessly stung by several Jellyfish that SpongeBob captured until all of the Jellyfish wounds began to engulf his body. Due to being constantly stung by all of the Jellyfish, Kevin’s hatred of SpongeBob began to grow. As a result, Kevin then devises an idea by arranging a final test for SpongeBob so he could join the Jellyspotters group.
It was then revealed that the final test was to capture the Queen Jellyfish. Deciding to use SpongeBob as bait, he was completely excited with the prospect of capturing the Queen Jellyfish alongside Kevin and the Jellyspotters. After tying SpongeBob to both poles and making him use the blower to call Queen Jellyfish, he and the Jellyspotters then hide behind the bush which causes Kevin to get stung by another Jellyfish. After a seemingly futile attempt at calling the Queen Jellyfish that continues for one day straight, SpongeBob finds out that Kevin’s plans don't work. However, after he saw the Queen Jellyfish hovering above him, SpongeBob decided to tell Kevin the good news. However, when SpongeBob checks the bushes, Kevin and the Jellyspotters were nowhere to be seen, only leaving his sting ointment. Afterwards, the Queen Jellyfish decided to zap SpongeBob which caused him to scream and run to evade the Queen Jellyfish’s attacks. When he was cornered at the edge of the cliff, SpongeBob then begs to the Queen Jellyfish that he would let her go. When SpongeBob began to beg, it was revealed that the Queen Jellyfish is a mechanical beast controlled by Kevin and the Jellyspotters with them sadistically laughing at SpongeBob’s misery, revealing his true nature towards SpongeBob. When Kevin tells SpongeBob that he rejected the latter’s appeal to join the Jellyspotters, SpongeBob is distraught, telling him that he was his biggest fan. This caused Kevin to tell SpongeBob that he already had several biggest fans living in the bottom of the cliff, still alive while yelling at him with praise, heavily implying that Kevin had pushed his previous biggest fans to the cliff for a long time. Afterwards, Kevin and the Jellyspotters then sadistically mock SpongeBob how much of a loser he is.
When Kevin was mocking SpongeBob for his cowardly attitude or how he was being duped by him and the Jellyspotters, suddenly a giant Jellyfish known as the King Jellyfish–Cnidaria Rex in his latin name–arises from the cliff and encountered Kevin’s mechanic. Enamored with the Queen Jellyfish robot controlled by Kevin, the King attempts to kiss it which causes Kevin, the Jellyspotters and SpongeBob to run away from the King. However, Kevin ended up crashing his robot to the billboard sign that contains the advertisement of him promoting his ointment. After Kevin accidentally crashes into the billboard, the King’s enamored expression suddenly becomes agitated after seeing Kevin. Afterwards, the King attempts to zap Kevin and the Jellyspotters as they end up retreating into a cave with SpongeBob with the king attempting to barge in. When Kevin thought that the king was gone, he then ordered one of the anchovy nerds to check if the king was gone or not. As the anchovies attempt to beg Kevin to save them, Kevin then tells the truth towards them that he’s just in the club for the fashion and then reveals his cowardly nature, unable to do anything when the situation is dire. Although SpongeBob asked the anchovies for help first, he then ended up stepping outside and decided to help them on his own, by using his bubble technique to create a giant bubble pie that made the King enamored and get away. After seeing what happened, Kevin becomes enamored with SpongeBob’s achievement of driving away the King Jellyfish. However, he still expresses his ungrateful side and still does not let SpongeBob enter the Jellyspotters group. In the end, the anchovies fed up with him and tore down the crown of his head while giving it to SpongeBob, putting him in excruciating pain as it was revealed that the crown was a part of his body, specifically his tentacle. Despite being accepted into the group, SpongeBob turns them down in the end because he views Jellyfish club should be about Jellyfish and not about Kevin.
Trivia[]
- Some parts of his name can be considered a pun much like other character names in SpongeBob. This can be found through the “C. Cucumber” part that is a pun of sea cucumber, befitting his own appearance as well. His first name, Kevin, comes from the Irish roots which means “Of Noble Birth”. His first name makes sense in context in terms of personality despite some can be contradictory due to his vain, arrogant, pompous, condescending and sadistic nature, who thinks everyone is beneath him due to his newfound fame, some of the traits that arrogant people of noble descendant in fictional media possesses.
- In one of the scenes, it is shown that Kevin reacts with extreme pain when his crown is removed. It was revealed that the crown itself was a tentacle, an anatomical part of the sea cucumber’s body that tends to be located on its mouth.
