Javier Rios

"Howling" Javier Rios is one of three quarternary antagonists of Pixar's 14th full-lenght animated feature film Monsters University (Alongside Reggie Jacobs and Chip Goff).

He is a blue insect-like monster with four arms and pink eyes. He is a member of the Roar Omega Roar fraternity, and one of Johnny Worthington III's henchmen.

He was voiced by Jess Harnell.

Biography[]

Monsters University[]

Javier is seen competing with an opponent during a ping pong match at a house where JOX is having a party during the part where Mike and Sulley attempt to stop Archie from causing more havoc. Javier and his opponent notice Mike and Archie passing by just as Sulley tries to catch up, which Javier reacts in fright upon noticing Sulley smashing the table where Javier and his opponent are playing ping pong. Having caught Archie, Javier is then seen following alongside Johnny Worthington III and the rest of his team Roar Omega Roar and as Mike tries to join, he ends up getting mocked by the group for his harmless appearance; the group instead accepts Sulley due to him coming from a family of well-known scarers, but when they find out about Sulley's bad grades, they threaten to remove him from the group if he fails the final exam to Mike.

During the Scare Games, Javier and the rest of the RΩR team participate during the Toxicity Challenge competing with various other teams; with their skill, the RΩR have great success at the games, coming first at all challenges. However, against all odds, Oozma Kappa somehow stays in the competition after two rounds. Javier is later seen with the rest of RΩR who invite the Oozma Kappas to their fraternity house under the pretense of their efforts in the Scare Games so far, it later turns out to be a trap by RΩR to humiliate OK by taking embarrassing pictures of the group, and then proceeding to sell the picture on various products. However, while this does weaken OK's spirits, RΩR's attempts backfire as OK becomes more determined to come out on top and end up performing better and better at the Scare Games.

During the Scare Game Finals, Javier and the rest of RΩR compete with the Oozma Kappas during the last event - a scare simulator race. Throughout the finals, Javier competes with Art who ferociously hisses at the simulation child, causing him to earn a higher score but not before Art scares the child, causing his score to become lower. However, Oozma Kappa suddenly wins against RΩR, defeating Johnny's team. After Sulley realized that he tampered with the settings, Javier and the rest of Roar Omega Roar approach Sulley who attempt to make him join Johnny's team again, but not before Sulley plans to talk to Dean Hardscrabble about tampering he did.

Although he does not make further appearances afterwards, it was later revealed during the end credits that Javier became a worker at Monsters, Inc. where he became a scarer as revealed via Scare Card.

Other appearances[]

Javier and the rest of RΩRs (sans Randall) return in Party Central, where they still continue to antagonize the OKs, possibly as revenge for them outscaring them at the Scare Games and becoming even more successful than them.

Personality[]

Javier's personality is that of a 'calm kid', usually seen as somebody who sits back and looks cool whilst everyone else including his fellow RΩR brothers are being loud. Whenever someone else is yelling or cracking jokes, he's just staying quiet.

Javier is also seemingly shown to get irritated with others frequently, particularly with rival fraternity Oozma Kappa. He even seems to actively dislike Sullivan, Javier being the one who snatches Sullivan's test out of his hands and seeming distinctly unimpressed with him and his grades, shaking his head and looking to Johnny as Sullivan leaves. He does not seem to share the same praise towards Sulley like the other members of Roar Omega Roar such as Johnny and Chet. Javier is also shown to be a good ping pong player, using his four arms as an advantage and smiling whilst playing. The fact Sulley broke the table in half during one of Javier's games could also be one of the reasons he is unimpressed by him at first.

Similarly, he also seems to have pride in his abilities like other members, evident as he is shown encouraging crowds to cheer for his team and cheering for himself at the end of Scare Games events. He is also shown posing in a gangster like manner for a photograph with the RΩR's and when Johnny states that real scarers look like his team. Additionally, Javier seemingly has no qualms about laughing at others who are put down, especially by Johnny, particularly if the insults are to make him and his friends look better. An example of this is when Sullivan states Mike doesn't really have a chance in the Scaring Programme and Javier briefly laughs, only for his straight-face to return moments later. He also takes part in the party prank, pressing the button which triggers the cannon which releases the glitter onto the members of OK. As well as this, he is shown talking to monsters whilst Johnny sells the papers.

However, apart from his somewhat deadpan disposition, Javier is shown smiling or laughing on certain occasions. He is shown to be smiling whilst playing ping-pong, taking part in the OK prank and even during his scare in the final Scare Games event. He laughs briefly when Johnny mentions that OK could always work in the mail room if they wanted to get into a scare company. In the teaser trailer, he is shown to be laughing and smiling with fellow monsters and additionally is the monster who shines the lamp on Mike, Javier also taking part in the partying. Nevertheless, this just could have been an earlier concept of his character.

Trivia[]

Javier made an appearance in Monsters University's teaser trailer, where he had a rather important role, as the monster holding the flashlight directed at Mike.
It's revealed at the end of the film that after becoming a scarer at Monsters, Inc., he is dubbed "Howling" Javier Rios.
During the Scare Simulator portion of the Scare Games, Javier was the only member on the Roar Omega Roar team that didn't roar or make any sound effect from his mouth whatsoever. He scared the child with rattling noises; where it came from is unknown. It could be possible that the rattling was instead, a hiss.
When the scream canister flew at the ROR members during the Finals scene, his head retreated into his body.
