Jafar is the main antagonist of Disney's Aladdin franchise.
He was the Vizier of Agrabah who plotted to overthrow the Sultan with the help of his parrot Iago by obtaining a lamp from the Cave of Wonders, but when this failed, he planned to marry Princess Jasmine to become Sultan before killing her and her father. He eventually found the lamp and used his wishes becomes both the Sultan and the most powerful sorcerer in the world but was tricked by Aladdin into using his final wish to become an all-powerful genie but is trapped with Iago in his lamp as per the rules of being a genie. Iago escaped but fell out with Jafar and left him. The thug Abis Mal accidentally released Jafar and helped him in his quest for revenge against Aladdin. Jafar overwhelmingly overpowered and imprisoned Genie, as well as the rest of Aladdin's friends, before he forced Iago, who had befriended Aladdin, to help him frame Aladdin for killing the Sultan. However, after Iago had a change of heart and freed Aladdin and his friends, they attacked Jafar before Abis Mal could wish him free. Jafar quickly incapacitated them all and fatally wounded Iago, who still managed to kick Jafar's lamp into a pit of lava, destroying him. Jafar was resurrected by the Lord of the Underworld Hades, in exchange for him helping Hades defeat Hercules. Jafar pitted Aladdin and Hercules at odds, but they saw through his lies and attacked him at the underworld where he was killed by Hercules before his lifeless spirit was forever pulled into the River Styx.

History[]
Aladdin[]
Jafar tries to find Genie's lamp in order to take over Agrabah, manipulating several people, including Aladdin into finding it for him. The Sultan, upon informed of Jafar's treachery, then he tried to have the guards to arrest Jafar for his betrayal, Jafar, however, escaped with a smoke bomb, although not before glancing the lamp inside Ali's turban, having him deduce Ali's true identity of Aladdin. He then reveals this to Iago, and ordered him to steal the lamp from Aladdin, which he succeeded in the task by tricking Aladdin into thinking Jasmine was calling him. Jafar, observing the marriage announcement from his lab, then unleashed the Gene, and made him his master, declaring his first wish to become the sultan of Agrabah, and then the most powerful sorcerer in the world. Jafar tries to win Jasmine's heart by offering to make her his beloved queen, but an angry Jasmine refuses. Frustrated, Jafar decides to use his third wish to have Jasmine to fall in love with him. The Genie tells Jafar that he cannot make someone fall in love. Jafar angrily orders him to, not seeing Aladdin when arguing with the Genie. Jasmine pretends to fall in love with Jafar while Aladdin sneaks in and steals the lamp.
Jafar turns around, but Jasmine grabs and kisses Jafar to steal his attention. After Jasmine and Jafar's long, passionate, romantic kiss, Jafar discovers Aladdin. After battling Aladdin using a series of bad puns made real by his magic, Jafar transforms himself into a giant cobra in an attempt to kill Aladdin. After wrapping his coils around the boy, Jafar begins squeezing the life out of him, but Aladdin slyly manipulates him into using his third and final wish to become an all-powerful genie in an attempt to rule the whole universe. The power-hungry Jafar is convinced that becoming a genie is the only way to have unlimited power (since Genie was the one who gave Jafar his power, in the first place, thus making Jafar the second most powerful being after Genie), and he falls for Aladdin's trap. Now transformed into a genie with unlimited powers but no free will, Jafar becomes trapped his own lamp along with Iago, then tossed out into the Cave of Wonders by Genie.
The Return of Jafar[]
Iago is sick of being ordered around. He abandons Jafar and drops his lamp down a well. The now-genie Jafar is later released by Abis Mal, who finds his lamp in the well after being humiliated by Aladdin. After cunningly making Abis-Mal waste his first two wishes, Jafar threatens Abis into helping him exact revenge on Aladdin. His plan includes holding Jasmine, Abu, the Sultan, and the Carpet hostage (as well as confining Genie in a power orb to prevent him from foiling his plan) and forcing a reformed Iago to help him frame Aladdin for the Sultan's "death", which would cause him to face death at the hands of the palace guards. Luckily, Iago frees Genie from the orb, giving him enough time to save Aladdin and his friends. When Jafar discovers this, he is outraged that Aladdin is still alive, transforms into his genie form and battles the heroes, confident that they'll never destroy him because of his great power. he then creates a wasteland in the palace's garden with pits of lava in an attempt to destroy Aladdin and the others and keep his lamp safe. When it seems like he is succeeding, however, Iago turns against him for his betrayal and comes to the rescue and grabs the lamp and attempts to give it to Aladdin, Jafar is furious and tries to attack him as well. He badly injures his former ally, teasing Aladdin about good help being hard to find, but Iago with his last ounces of strength doesn't give up easily and kicks the lamp into the lava, melting it away to a Purple and Green Liquid Mass and causing Jafar to fade to a skeleton wreathed in electricity before imploding into a cloud of dust, destroying him forever, and ending his reign of terror once and for all. After Jafar was gone, peace is restored once more and Iago is welcomed to Aladdin's home.
Other Appearances[]
In an episode of Hercules: The animated series, called "Hercules and the Arabian Night" Jafar makes another attempt at revenge, and is temporarily resurrected by Hercules's arch-enemy, Hades. He has lost his status as an all-powerful immortal genie after dying, but Hades gives him a new cobra staff that makes him flesh and blood as long as he holds it, and the two villains team up to get rid of Aladdin and Hercules. However, due to Aladdin's wit and Herc's strength, Jafar is defeated for the final time, being pulled into the River Styx.
Jafar debuted in Kingdom Hearts, as one of the members of Maleficent's inner circle. Here, he plans to use the Heartless and take over Agrabah. Jafar is attempting to located both Jasmine (as she is one of the Princess' of Heart) and Agrabah's Keyhole. Jafar eventually manages to steal the Genie's lamp from Aladdin and kidnap Jasmine. Sora, Aladdin, Donald Duck, and Goofy track him to the Cave of Wonders where they engage Jafar in battle. Upon his defeat he fakes death but returns and uses his final wish to become a Genie and battles the team again only to be defeated and sealed away in the lamp. In Kingdom Hearts 2, Jafar's lamp is found by the Peddler, making him a target for Pete as he reveals his intent to make Jafar into a Heartless under his control. Once Pete is driven off, the lamp is placed within the palace. However, Jafar is later released by the Peddler and he threatens Iago into helping him get Sora and his friends on a wild goose chase to their death while he captures Jasmine. But after the heroes arrive, with Iago taking a hit meant for Aladdin, Sora defeats Jafar, causing him to implode with his lamp dissolving soon after. Jafar appears in Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Meomories with the Heartless to take over a facsimile of Agrabah created from Sora's memories.
