Jack Crew is Robin Crew's stepfather and the secondary antagonist of the 1986 sport drama movie Flying.
He is played by the late actors Sean McCann.
Biography[]
After her husband's death, Marge, Robin's mother, while the two still resided in San Francisco, married Jack Crew and became stepmother to his daughter Gillian.
After the wedding, the Crew family went to live in Buffalo to help Jack open a laundry there.
Even not being under the thumb of her husband, Marge and her daughter Robin are forced to do the hard manual labor at the store while Jack and his daughter work the counter. Jack has always had a turbulent relationship with his stepdaughter, Robin. Not accepting that she wastes time in the gym of her high school gymnastics team, the Buffalo Flyers and complaining about the way she dresses (saying she looks like a "lesbo" and not dressing as cute as her "sister").
When Robin manages to become an integral member of her gymnastics team and have Tommy as her boyfriend. The relationship between the two becomes increasingly conflictual, ending with the girl's dismissal from the laundry and her transfer after the death of her mother, no longer wanting to deal with the man's tyranny.
Jack hears about the Nationals from his daughter Gillian, who is willing to lend a hand to her ex-stepsister. Drunk, he physically attacks Robin and accuses her of abandoning her family, Gillian's attempts to stop the man are useless. But he is stopped by the girl's friends and beaten by Roy.
After the beating, Jack, bleeding, watches Robin's performance on the carpet together with his daughter, finally understanding the girl passion and deciding to leave her alone once and for all.
Personality[]
Jack is a very severe, tyrannical and selfish man. He never thinks about others and believes that his dreams are more important than anything else, especially with his stepdaughter Robin, believing her to be a rebellious little brat, having no problem even hitting her (but not when his wife isn't around).
Trivia[]
- Jack also has several problems with alcohol, even arguing an entire night with his wife about it, not knowing that Robin, from her bedroom, was listening to the whole argument.
- Before this film, the actor who plays Jack, Sean McCann, had played another part of the antagonist together with the Canadian actor, Keanu Reeves. In the short film, "One Step Away" (1985), he plays the tenant who threatens to kick out Reeves' mother because of her wayward son.
