Experiment-1170, most commonly known as Huggy Wuggy, is a major antagonist and mascot of the indie horror franchise Poppy Playtime, serving as the main antagonist of the first game's opening chapter, A Tight Squeeze, and a playable Monster in the multiplayer prequel Project: Playtime.

He is a gigantic, monstrous version of Playtime CO.'s mascot and highest-selling toy, created as part of the Bigger Bodies Initiative. Although he appears as a seemingly huggable, friendly mascot, Huggy Wuggy is a dangerous, predatory monster who guards the main entrance of Playtime CO. in preparation to ferociously kill and devour anyone who enters the facility, having been made to serve as the factory's security. Like most of the other toys, Huggy is actually a transformed orphan child.

Appearance[]

Huggy Wuggy is shown in the game as an enormous, blue-furred mysterious-like creature, with long, lanky arms and legs, yellow hands and feet, and a large triangular head. He has two round eyes with large black pupils and a wide mouth with bright red lips, and his feet have opposable thumbs. Commercially sold toy versions of Huggy Wuggy are around a foot in height, whereas the Huggy Wuggy displayed in the factory is 18 feet tall and his weight is estimated to be 1795 lbs since he has flesh. In official Playtime Co. illustrations the inside of Huggy's mouth appears toothless with a normal-looking pink tongue, but the giant Huggy Wuggy is shown to have a mouth full of mismatched, needle-like teeth, along with a second set of similar teeth in the back of its throat, arranged in a circle like a lamprey. Being an animated stuffed toy, Huggy's limbs can bend and flex bonelessly with ease, which it uses to its advantage when chasing the player through the ventilation shafts, squeezing and crawling through the tight tunnels. Its implied that Huggy is at least partially organic, judging by its teeth and gums, the saliva dripping from its mouth, and the bloodstains left behind after it falls down a pit and smacks against a pipe on the way down.

Assuming he is the human child seen in the Chapter 3 trailer, he was formerly a boy with dirty blond hair likely between the age of six and twelve.

Personality[]

The fictional-fictional Huggy Wuggy seems to be a jolly, happy-go-lucky creature who loves hugs and making children smile, a typical family-friendly cartoon mascot. The giant Huggy that chases the player, on the other hand, is a vicious, bloodthirsty predator whose only desire is to capture the player and eat them alive. However, despite his violent nature and lack of speech, Huggy Wuggy is not a mindless beast- he still has the capability of manipulating and formulating strategies to better capture his prey. When he is first shown, Huggy appears as a harmless giant stuffed toy or statue, standing perfectly still. Later in the game, he actively lures the player deeper into the facility all the way in while stalking them but also slowing his pursuit when he realized that he had them cornered. He is stated to be average in intelligence and is very loyal to his superiors.

Biography[]

Past[]

Huggy Human

The possible human identity of Huggy appearing in the Chapter 3 trailer.

Huggy Wuggy was first created by Playtime CO. in 1984 as a toy for children. He soon became the most successful product of the company, which caused Playtime to create Experiment 1170: a living, gigantic monstrous version of Huggy as part of the Bigger Bodies Initiative, out of an orphaned child.

Huggy had escaped the facility at least once. On the 18th of June, 1992, Huggy had escaped from the factory through a delivery bay door in the production wing after getting inside the ventilation, and was estimated to have run half a mile away from the facility. Two staff members, who've witnessed the incident, then try to chase after him. As the security team tried to chase him down, Huggy attacks many of the team members, having 6 members go missing and 5 killed by him, though he was captured and sedated 4 hours later.

At an unknown point in time, an employee named Thomas Clarke was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and agreed to join the BBI by being turned into a little version of the Bron the Dinosaur toy. Recognizing he's an employee and not a child, the rest of the toys in the room - including Huggy - attack and brutalize him, devouring some of his body parts and almost killing him. This rendered Thomas mute and separated from the other toys.

On August 8th, 1995, all the experiments in the factory, including Huggy, would cause a massive riot against the Playtime CO. employees, killing them all under orders from the Prototype, before dragging the corpses into the deepest parts of the factory and eating them. This event would become known as the "Hour of Joy" and caused the end of Playtime CO.

Chapter 1: A Tight Squeeze[]

His first appearance saw him pretended to be a statue to fool the protagonist. As soon as the protagonist managed to grab the key and turn the power back on in a room (that requires said key), Huggy Wuggy disappears from his pedestal, and throughout the game, he stalks the player from vents or high unreachable places. It is not until the player runs into the dark that he will appear from the shadows and chase them down in the conveyor belt tunnels. Every time the player fails to reach the catwalk at the end of the belt, they are met with Huggy Wuggy snatching up and killing them with his teeth.

If the player does manage to get to the catwalk, they must pull a box to block the creature and destroy it, causing them both to fall. Where the player survives by landing on a platform below, Huggy Wuggy ends up falling to his death while colliding with some pipes, leaving only blood stains everywhere.

Chapter 3: Deep Sleep[]

Huggy reappears as a monstrous hallucination coming out of a television screen. After CatNap's death, Poppy Playtime would show the protagonist a VHS tape of the "Hour of Joy" event to reveal what happened to the factory's workers. In the tape, Huggy is seen posing as a statue before revealing himself to be alive to a crowd of people where he jumped on and ate a man. He then proceeded to slaughter anyone else he came across under the Prototype's orders during the massacre before dragging the corpses to the deepest parts of the factory and eating them to stay alive.

Poppy tells the player about how he manages to kill Huggy Wuggy and Mommy Long Legs, and believes they can kill the both the Prototype and CatNap together.

Powers[]

  • Enhanced Strength: As a gigantic mutant toy, Huggy Wuggy possesses feats of super strength. He can lift heavy objects, smash through metal and easily kill his opponents.
  • Enhanced Durability: Huggy Wuggy's body can withstand damage that would easily kill humans. When he fell from the catwalk, he bled from the impact, but it is unknown if he survived the fall.
    • It is possible that he DID survive the fall, albeit barely, and got finished off by the box the player used to crush him with, due to Poppy saying that Huggy was dead.
  • Exceptional Speed: Huggy can move much faster than normal people, especially in the air ducts.
  • Superhuman Flexibility: Huggy's body is far more malleable than normal individuals allowing him to easily maneuver the air vents to chase the player.
  • Feral Mind: Due to all the experiments that were conducted on Huggy Wuggy, his mind is much like that of an animal, and he tends to attack and kill anything he sees.
  • Control over the Mini Huggies: In Project: Playtime, Huggy has the ability to summon a Mini Huggy, which acts as a living sentry that shrieks out when a survivor comes close, alerting Huggy Wuggy.
  • Stealth: Huggy Wuggy can stand perfectly still in a given area (most notably the pedestal where he has to pose as a statue) in a similar fashion to Miss Delight to fool unsuspecting prey.
    • He has been doing this for far longer than Miss Delight has, in fact, due to being one of the earlier experiments.

Trivia[]

  • A theory by fans suggests that Huggy Wuggy was Rich, who gets subjected to an experiment conducted by Playtime CO that went wrong for allegedly complaining and speaking out against the company.
    • However, later material all but outright confirms Huggy is actually an unnamed orphaned child.
  • Due to Huggy Wuggy falling off the catwalk, it is unknown whether or not he survived, and thus if he will return in future chapters of the game. However, it's widely believed he'll return due to being the main mascot of both the game and the in-game company Playtime Co, as well as appearing heavily in the marketing for the game stated by mashoor.
    • In Chapter 2, in the last puzzle room before Mommy Long Legs' transformation, blue fur and blood marks can be seen on the walls, heavily implying that Huggy Wuggy survived and climbed up, albeit in a bloodied, injured state.
    • If Huggy Wuggy did die, the Prototype likely took his remains and made them part of his body.
    • Poppy states Huggy is dead in Chapter 3.
  • It was originally speculated that Huggy Wuggy was Experiment-1006, as it was the only experiment number mentioned in Chapter 1. Chapter 2 reveals Huggy Wuggy's identification number is Experiment-1170, and 1006 is a different entity.
  • Huggy is considered by scientists to be the optimal outcome for the experiments as he demonstrates not only intelligence, but also obedience to the company.
  • While Huggy is a major antagonist of the Poppy Playtime games, his depiction in EnchantedMOB's Minecraft animations (which are non-canon to the games despite being made by the same developers) does not count as a villain since he displays genuine compassion to his friends and even comes across as heroic in some skits.
  • A major joke on YouTube was YouTubers high-fiving the Huggy statue.
    • The Huggy statue was even posed in a high-fiving stature.
  • MOB Games revealed that Huggy's design is based off of the Sour Patch Kids.
