Horatio P. Huntington is the main antagonist of the 2017 Spanish-Chinese-American animated film Animal Crackers. He is Buffalo Bob’s older brother, Owen’s uncle, Zoe's uncle-in-law, and Mackenzie’s great-uncle.

He was voiced by Ian McKellen, who also played Magneto in the X-Men movie series, The Toad in Flushed Away, Kurt Dussander in Apt Pupil, King Richard III in the 1995 film adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Richard III, Roy Courtnay in The Good Liar, and Sir Leigh Teabing in The Da Vinci Code.

Biography[]

In 1962, brothers Bob and Horatio Huntington ran a traveling circus around United States called the Huntington Brothers Circus, remaining on good terms despite carrying different ambitions. Horatio let the fame go to his head and outshined the other performers. During a performance in San Jose, their gypsy partner Esmerelda introduced them to her niece Talia. The two brothers were instantly infatuated with her, but Talia gradually ended up falling for Bob, slowly infuriating Horatio. When he found out about their engagement, Horatio told Bob to either choose between Talia or himself to spend his future with. Bob ultimately decided to stick to his heart and married Talia. On their wedding day, Esmerelda gave the couple a mysterious box as a gift, which allowed them to open a new circus; Buffalo Bob's Rootin' Tootin' Animal Circus, known for their magical animals performing defying stunts.

Years later, Horatio, whose success had depleted since his split with Bob, began sneaking into Bob's circus at night, trying to find the secret to the magic animals. One night, he got into a scuffle with circus pets Old Blue the Bloodhound and Zena the tuxedo cat when they discovered him, and accidentally started a fire that burned down part of the circus. Bob and Horatio's nephew Owen later learned that Bob and Talia died in the fire, and he and his wife Zoe, along with their daughter Mackenzie, attended their memorial service at the burnt-down circus. Horatio made an unexpected visit at the service, announcing that he was going take over the circus because of Bob's apparent "betrayal" for choosing Talia over him years before. He, his henchman Mario Zucchini, and the rest of Horatio's henchmen Samson, El Diablo, and Stabby engaged in a fight with the performers, causing Owen and his family to leave the service.

Before the Huntingtons left, Old Blue and Zena gave them the mysterious box that opened the circus. In the car, Owen discovered that the mysterious box holds animal crackers. Owen inadvertently ate one of them during a stop and turned into a hamster, but during a chase with Zucchini, Owen turns into a Kodiak bear. They learned from clown Chesterfield that the animal crackers were the secret to the circus; they'd turn the user into the animal they ate, and that it always remained full of an unlimited number of animals, but with only one human cookie for each to change them back to their normal selves. Later, he told the couple they'd inherited the circus.

One night during a circus performance, Owen (in his gorilla form) approached by Horatio with the human cookie, offering to turn him back to normal as long as he gives him the circus. Owen refused, believing that he'd remain an animal as long as it would keep his family together. Angered, Horatio forced Owen into the deal, while also bringing in his henchmen, now transformed into animal hybrids from the broken pieces of animal crackers brought by Mario along with the human cookie previously. Horatio's henchman held Owen down as Horatio force-fed him the cookie of each different animal while Mario grabs the box.

The circus performers discovered Horatio's presence immediately afterward and worked together to stop the henchmen and gave Owen back the box. However, Horatio, dissatisfied with how they used the animal crackers, ate the spilled cookies he grabbed, and turned himself into a chimera. Old Blue and Zena then revealed themselves to be Bob and Talia; they explained that they escaped the fire, but their human cookies were destroyed, meaning they could never be human again which shocked Horatio. They asked Horatio to stop and redeem himself for his evil deeds. Horatio refused and flew up into the air with them. Horatio tries to drop Bob and Talia from the sky, but Bulletman turns into a rhinoceros and incapacitates the chimera, while Talia is saved by Zoe and Owen's toddler daughter Mackenzie who turns into a Golden snub-nosed monkey.

Owen, Zoe, Mackenzie, and the performers worked together to defeat Horatio and his henchmen, with Horatio being captured by a large net and then turned into a hamster by Owen. Chesterfield then states that it might take him a while to put their human cookies back together. Huntington was last seen inside of a cage, as he looks at his defeated henchmen and then starts running on the hamster wheel.

Personality[]

On the surface, Horatio appears to be a presented himself to be friendly, charismatic and very well-known to be very well-meaning to the public, as well showing to be very proud of his work alongside Buffalo Bob. However, this starts to change after Bob marries Talia, which creates a strong hate towards him and his own family at the point that he tries to get attention from the public until he gets revenge by discovering Esmeralda's magical animal crackers.

It's implied that a big part of why Horatio grew to hate Bob was due to being more popular than him. He makes it clear during the Could've Been Mine song where it was explained that even after Bob's supposed death that he considers being kind to others while veryone else was too polite to tell him. But in reality, Horatio is a sadistic, manipulative, arrogant, egotistical and ruthless man who just want to ruin his family's jealousy just for the sake of popularity and had no qualms of harming anyone that comes in his way, including Mackenzie who is only a young child. He also shows to be very intelligent, often trying to make some sarcastic jokes about his wealth.

Appearance[]

Horatio is a elderly man of above-average height and medium build, he has light blue eyes, half bald greyish-white hair and wears a white jumpsuit with red sleeves with a yellow fleurs-de-lis and wave symbols in the collar and cape in its back, accompanied by small grey pendants all over the clothes and white shoes. On his youth, he has a blonde pompadour.

As a chimera. Horatio appears to be a six-limbed grey-skinned monster with sharp teeth and dark red eyes and is composed by parts of different animals, has the head of a white-maned lion, the horns of a Bighorn sheep, large dragon wings and the tail, limbs and body of a Saltwater crocodile.

On his final form, Horatio is an overweight hamster with dark grey and white fur and a pink snout.
