~ Gumball's most famous catchphrase. |
Gumball Tristopher Watterson is the main protagonist of The Amazing World of Gumball animated series, the titular overall protagonist of The Gumball Chronicles, and the deuteragonist of Darwin’s Yearbook. He could either be the protagonist or deuteragonist of the upcoming movie.
He is a student that attends Elmore High School along with his adoptive brother, Darwin, and his sister, Anais. He has a major crush on Penny. She has a crush on him too, but both have trouble expressing their feelings to each other. In "The Shell" episode, they finally express their feelings for each other. At times, he causes trouble, but then later learns from his mistakes. His archenemy is Rob. He also has played a villainous role in some episodes.
He was voiced by Logan Grove, Jacob Hopkins, Nicolas Cantu and Duke Cutler in The Amazing World of Gumball. He is voiced by Duke Cutler in The Gumball Chronicles. In the Japanese version, he is voiced by Junko Takeuchi, who also voiced from Naruto Uzumaki in the same name franchise and Gon Freecss in Hunter × Hunter 1999 series.
Appearance[]
Gumball is a light blue Talking cat. On his oversized head, he has 6 whiskers, but 5 are shown because he is 2-D. He wears a tan sweater with brown cuffs and a brown collar, and rolled-up grey trousers. The inside of his mouth is pink, his tongue is light pink and his nose is orange. He also possesses a "thumb" in the hair of his tail, He is taller than Darwin Watterson.
Personality[]
In season 1 Gumball is portrayed as a fun-loving, imaginative, rather optimistic, and a very mischievous kitten. When his mishaps get himself into a mess, he usually attempts to fix things with somewhat dimwitted ideas, which usually get him into even more trouble than before. No matter how his schemes resolve themselves, Gumball's naïveté stops him from learning his lesson. He usually plans his mishaps with Darwin. Like Darwin, Gumball does not appear to notice deception, which may mean that he is too optimistic to notice the most negative things around him. Gumball has a big ego, and it is where he is most sensitive. Otherwise, he is usually positive on all matters concerning him. Gumball is smart, but that doesn't mean he's wise. At times, he acts stupid and goes to great illogical lengths to find something, but he has shown some degree of cleverness in other circumstances. He happens to have a superior vocabulary than that of most of his classmates, using more mature words. Gumball has also displayed extents of observance and operational ingenuity, such as being able to identify small things like the burn markings on Rocky's palms, intellectually arrange escape routes based on his surroundings, and even counter his mother Nicole's hand-based offences for a great deal of time, shown in both episodes "The Date" and "The Remote"; in which case, even secretly confiscating her car keys from her pocket in the process. His antics have gotten him in dangerous and often life-threatening situations, usually saved by luck or by someone more sensible at the time. He has shown skill in building, when he made a system of chain reactions to launch a bowling ball onto the moon, as seen in "The Car," though he failed miserably in the last element that held the launching spring up. He is a decent cook, making a very good sandwich for Darwin as mentioned in "The Secret," and is shown making a good (extremely spicy) meal for him in the same episode. He also got a B in-home eds for his cooking, and Miss Simian called his cooking divine. However, in "The Responsible," Gumball makes disgusting food for Anais, consisting of a rotten fish between bread slices, and an old shoe. In "The Knights," Gumball made a cake for Mr. Fitzgerald. In season 2 and onwards while yes its not huge or anything Gumball's personality does go through a decent change for example in season 1 Gumball was cheerfull, and was pretty dumb at times somewhat like Darwin but in season 2 and onwards Gumball is alot more pessimistic, sarcastic, cynical and even a bit less naive, though he still has a ego and alot of his other characteristics are still there.
Powers and Skills[]
Gumball, like a cartoon character, can manipulate reality on a vast scale. This concept is commonly known as Toonforce. However, Gumball's Toonforce seems to be very erratic and is an "On and Off" type of ability. Sometimes Gumball can be durable enough to withstand the explosion of the Big Bang itself, transform into an actual Super Saiyan, and withstand being hit in the head with multiple bowling balls thrown at him from Tina Rex (a Tyrannosaurus many times his size), yet, other times, he can't even withstand a kick from his stepbrother Darwin.
Gumball, despite being considered very unwise, can be very manipulative and can easily deceive other characters (even ones considered much more intelligent than himself). He is also an expert liar, this ability going along with his manipulation skills, makes Gumball a very tricky and deceptive adversary.
Gumball has combat skills, like punching. Along with his unnatural durability, Gumball is very adept at surviving near-death experiences. Gumball also can move all parts of his body in any way that he desires. He has also survived to be in "The Void", a space like a place where the world keeps all of its mistakes. In "The Sorcerer", he also has a supernatural ability, like he defeated the giant Troll by using his supernatural annoyance.
Villainous Acts[]
- He frequently assaults some of his friends, such as Alan and Sarah G. Lato, by popping them or targeting their heads, often for very petty reasons.
- In "The Laziest," he and Darwin torment poor Larry to participate in a lazy-off against their father, Richard, despite Larry’s clear reluctance to revisit his past lifestyle as "Lazy Larry." Gumball and Darwin stalk him, repeatedly pleading for his participation, until Larry becomes so desperate and paranoid that he accidentally yells at a customer, getting himself fired. Things only worsen when he sees Gumball and Darwin in his car's back seats through the rearview mirror, causing him to panic, jump out, and let the car fall off a cliff and explode. Gumball and Darwin ignore the destruction and continue begging him. Larry finally snaps when they follow him to a restaurant where he’s with his girlfriend. Overwhelmed, Larry hurls objects at Gumball and Darwin, but accidentally hits his girlfriend, who then breaks up with him. After losing everything he worked for, Larry reverts to being "Lazy Larry" with Gumball and Darwin’s help, who show no remorse for ruining his life.
- In "The Flower," under Jealousy's influence, he tries to kill Leslie after falsely believing he is in a relationship with Penny, and later glues him to a bench before covering him in herbivorous insects, which begin to eat him.
- In "The Bet," Gumball mistreats Bobert after losing a bet, activating his "slave mode" to force him into a series of humiliating tasks, like embarrassing himself in the infirmary and attempting to divide by zero, which triggers a meltdown. Gumball’s negligence also leads to Bobert accidentally firing lasers at Mr. Small and ultimately turning hostile, setting out to eliminate Gumball with Darwin caught in the crossfire.
- Later, as Darwin pleads with Gumball to prevent Bobert’s self-destruction, with Darwin trapped behind a fallen bookshelf, Gumball’s only response is to try escaping the library alone. When this is met with disapproval, he wastes time instead of coming up with a solution. By the end of the episode, he appears to initiate another bet with Bobert, indicating he hasn’t learned his lesson.
- In "The Bumpkin," Gumball attempts to follow Idaho's Amish-like lifestyle. When he can't stick with it, he slyly persuades his family to follow the rules instead, while he secretly throws late-night parties with junk food, video games, and technology. He also tempts Idaho into joining him, feeding him french fries (ironically made from potatoes like Idaho himself), which makes Idaho dangerously sick and nearly kills him, as he’s unable to handle Gumball's lifestyle.
- In "The Promise," Gumball manipulates Darwin into ditching Banana Joe, whom Darwin wanted to make amends with by helping him make a video. Gumball insists that Darwin would be a disloyal brother if he goes, even causing Darwin to fall onto a pile of bricks when he tries to leave for Banana Joe. Due to Darwin’s absence, Banana Joe’s workout video fails, leaving him severely injured and disemboweled.
- In "The Finale," to help cover an $800,000 debt owed to the town of Elmore due to the Wattersons' reckless behavior over the series, Gumball and Darwin disguise themselves as Bobert and Alan to collect donations for a fictitious British boarding school. After a chase with the police, getting arrested, and eventually escaping prison, they retaliate against Mr. Small—who sues them for causing his claustrophobia—by compressing him into a tiny envelope and shipping him to the smallest country on Earth.
- In "The Recipe," he kills Anton 50 times in a row to discover the source of his immortality. Methods include crushing him with a bowling ball, giving him a heart attack, using him as bread in Tobias’s sandwich (resulting in him being eaten alive), shredding him in a paper shredder, blowing him up, crushing him with a door, launching a baseball through his face, getting him stomped on by Tina, and having him consumed by birds.
- Later, he disregards Anton’s autonomy by cloning him without concern for his friend’s feelings. He creates an entire army of Ant-Clones and hides them in a shed, making himself indirectly responsible for all of Ant-One’s actions, who ended up exterminating them all.
- In perhaps his most infamous actions, in "The Saint," after Alan took the blame for him damaging a library computer, Gumball decides to psychologically break Alan out of boredom and to prove he can bring him down to his level. He starts by making a xenophobic post on Alan’s Elmore Plus account to turn Alan’s friends against him, then uses a balloon with Darwin’s face to forcefully kiss other students to ruin Alan’s relationship. He eats Alan’s last meatball and even sells Alan’s parents into human trafficking to be used as balloon animals—all to feel better about his own flaws.
- In "The Spoiler," he eats Anton alive just to prevent him from spoiling a movie.
- In "The Parking," Gumball accidentally stabbed the milk carton guy with his car keys, and when he tried to fix it, he caused him to start "bleeding out" his milk. Afterwards, while he stopped the bleeding by plugging the wound with dollar bills, he simply ran away from the scene.
- In “The Parasite," believing Anais’s new friend is taking advantage of her, he attempted to kill her by poisoning her with a contaminated sandwich.
- Richard accidentally ate this sandwich instead, which left him incapacitated and extremely ill while trying to call 911.
- In "The Traitor," he obliterates four people while trying to catch Alan, knocks out Alan’s dad, accidentally pops Alan’s uncle, and later performs surgery on Alan and his mother without consent. When the surgery goes wrong, he blames Alan for being too hard to please.
- In "The Slap," he sexually harassed Tobias over and over because he wants the latter to slap his butt, and even tricked him into coming to the roof of the school under the impression that he would meet Masami Yoshida there. This inadvertently gets the two of them trapped for days, nearly dying as a result.
- In "The Scam," he and Carrie Krueger helped scam the entire school by staging a Gargaroth haunting, for which they would receive candy from each victim that they "save."
- Later in the episode, Gumball was extremely reluctant to stop Gargaroth from destroying the entire world and forcing Carrie into marriage just because he wanted a single lollipop, which was a necessary "hero's sacrifice" to stop Gargaroth.
- In “The Test," he vomited all of his venom at Tobias’s face, causing it to completely disintegrate and leaving his head with a giant hole.
- In "The Copycats," he and the Watterson family tried and get their rival copycats to kill themselves by copying their dangerous stunts, only because they were mimicking them on TV.
- In "The Stars," he and Darwin essentially enslave Larry by making him provide them new and free items under the threat of a bad review, even forcing him to create a disfigured elephant-bird hybrid against the laws of nature.
- In "The Console," he traps all of Elmore in a video game with the Game Child and forces everyone to conform to the game’s rules. Initially shocked, he soon begins enjoying it and attacks innocent citizens and animals to gain experience points. In the end, he restarts the game simply because he scored 84% instead of 100%.
- In "The Ex," he harasses Rob all day, trying to reestablish their rivalry, inadvertently ruining all of Rob’s traps set for Banana Joe. He also dismisses Penny’s advice, focusing only on Rob. Near the end, assuming he’s at Banana Joe’s house, he sets up a trap at Tobias’s house, causing a massive explosion that sets Tobias on fire and launches him across Elmore.
- In "The Nuisance," he helped his family turn Elmore into a disaster area by destroying a house with termites, pouring bath salts (or soap suds in the English version of the episode) into Elmore's water supply, and trying to convince Sal Left Thumb, a wanted criminal, to mug pedestrians in the neighborhood.
- Ultimately, he also helped burn down the entire town of Elmore.
- In "The Rival," Gumball and Darwin tried to ship a newborn Anais to the dog food factory as unlabeled meat, which would lead to her getting disposed in a crusher if they didn't regret their actions and stop it.
- In "The Candidate," Gumball becomes the leader of the trapped students, denies the rising temperature in the school, and devises a plan to scam everyone into starvation so he can hoard all the food. This eventually results in complete anarchy among the students, who begin attacking each other and destroying the school.
Defeated or Killed Enemies[]
- Tina: When Gumball and Darwin ate all the protein supplements and During School Gym, Miss Simian announces that they're going to play dodgeball, which Gumball can't stand. Tina comes over to Gumball and remarks that's he's going to get pummeled, which he does, unfortunately. After almost being hit with a bowling ball, Gumball decides he has had enough, as his arms begin to grow to massive proportions, his body becomes ripped, and the mustaches grow back. He throws a dodgeball with terrifying strength, which hits Tina and causes her to crash through the wall (The Mustache).
- Tobias: In the episode The Knight, he kicked Tobias's belly to save Penny from her father's car. In The Mothers, he and his mom, Jackie, were disqualified from the Mom-Off, after finding out they cheated. In The Test, he defeats him by vomiting out the venom inside him, making his face burned off.
- Virus: He is killed when Gumball steps on him. (The Virus)
- Julius Oppenheimmer, Jr.: In the episode, The Lesson, him, Gumball, and Darwin escape to the rooftop from an air conditioning vent, but find themselves stuck, as the rooftop vent was stuck and couldn't be opened. Gumball then angers Bomb Guy, causing his fuse to go off without him knowing, and they escape down in time for Bomb Guy to go off and blow open the vent. His last words are, "Well played." After the pair use a poorly-made zipline, they finally escape the school.
- William: In the episode The Voice, Gumball hits William with a tennis racket, knocking him out of a window.
- Ant-One: At the pool, Ant-One corners Gumball and Anton, stating that he will replace Anton and become friends with Gumball, whom he calls "father". Gumball then climbs up the diving board with Anton, explaining that Ant-One is not the original. This drives Ant-One to charge Anton, stating that if he "can't be the one, then no one can." Gumball grabs them both as they dangle off the board. Ant-One, believing that they are too heavy for Gumball, says that he must let them go. Gumball pulls them up easily, but Ant-One scratches Gumball and is dropped into the pool. He sinks to the bottom and is shredded as he is sucked into the drain. (The Recipe)
- Zach: Gumball defeats Zach by writing Gumball in the first arcade game that he wrote his true name, Zach, in. This causes him to vanish and die. (The Name)
- Mr. Chanax: Gumball says that it is just a bottle of Rocky's breath and rips Rocky's, and all of Soulless Office Workers', contracts. Defeated, Mr. Chanax crumples up into a ball, and Newspaper Employee, (free from the control of Mr. Chanax), collapses and every employee regains their spirit, including Rocky. With the deed done, the three hurry to the hospital while the employees heard the news that the Goblin Assistant of Mr. Chanax has been promoted to CEO by the shareholders, due to Mr. Chanax's "retirement", and told them to get back to work. (The Boss)
- Gorgoroth: Gumball tossed the last candy in Gargaroth's mouth when he was about to kiss Carrie, and he exploded, thus killing him. (The Scam)
- The Troll: Gumball used his special annoying ability power about elves, leprechauns, and other little creatures, annoying the troll, forcing him to vomit out the people he ate, and he shrunk, eventually disappearing. (The Sorcerer)
- Rob: Being stomped by Tina and get sent to the Void forever for betraying and framing Gumball and Darwin. (The Inquisition)
Overall, Gumball has killed 7 people during the show's run so far.
