The Great Intelligence was a mysterious sentient mind, and was a recurring villain of Doctor Who, appearing in classic Doctor Who episodes The Abominable Snowmen and The Web of Fear, and would return in origin story The Snowmen, and was the main antagonist of Series Seven.

History[]

Backstory[]

The Great Intelligence's true origins were a mystery, as some accounts indicated it was a member of the Great Old Ones, called Yog Sothoth, and functioned as a military strategist, while others indicated he was an exile from another universe.

The Snowmen[]

The Great Intelligence originally manifested as snow with a low level telepathic field. It was first discovered in 1842 by the young Walter Simon when his snowman started to reflect his dark thoughts. Believing it was truly sentient, the adult Simeon established the Great Intelligence Institute as the snow slowly swarmed to Earth.

In 1892, its presence was sufficient enough to consume mankind, and wished to use the Ice Governess, the twisted memory of the Latimer family's old governess, as a template. After Simeon's mind and memories were erased by the Eleventh Doctor, he was surprised to see the Intelligence survived. The Doctor discovered that it had learned to survive beyond physical form. Controlling the now-mindless Simeon, it attacked the Doctor, but was stopped in the last minutes of Christmas Eve when the snow changed to rain, mimicking the form of the tears of the Latimer family after Clara Oswin Oswald's death.

The Intelligence did not totally perish, and in fact learned to survive beyond physical form. It continued with the belief that the London Underground was a key strategic weakness.

Season 5[]

During the 18th century, the Intelligence possessed the Lama Padmasambhava while travelling the astral plane. He forced him to build Robot Yeti over the next two hundred years.  to be added

Trivia[]

  • In the Virgin New Adventures, the Great Intelligence is referred to as Yog Sothoth, from the Lovecraft stories.
  • The Lethbridge Stewart book The Forgotten Son heavily implies the Intelligence seen in The Snowmen is an anmesiac version, who had already experienced it's encounters throughout the 20th century. Thus it chose the name Great Intelligence, based on what it had been called in Tibet.
