Quote "With a face like mine is it a crime to be bouncing all the time?"

Goopy Le Grande is an anti-hero and a boss of Cuphead.

Appearance[]

Goopy is a blue slime with a small red nose. During Phase 2, he grows to double his normal size. In his final form, he has his blue face with an angry frown on a grey gravestone with a cross on top, displaying the term "RIP" (Rest In Peace).

Personality[]

Goopy acts incredibly narcissistic and overconfident in combat, always commenting on how handsome he is, even as a gravestone, as seen in his death screen. However, he seems to hold respect for his opponents, as he makes a cap-tipping gesture using the top his head to Cuphead and Mugman in his opening animation. He also may be seen to be tricky, as implied in how he uses a jellybean to grow big in Phase 2.

Battle[]

As the battle begins deep inside the forest, Goopy tips his cap as a greeting to Cuphead and Mugman.

Phase 1[]

"With a face like mine is it a crime to be bouncing all the time?"

Goopy Le Grande, Phase 1 Death Screen

Hitpoints = 440/288/336

As the battle commences, Goopy Le Grande begins to bounce around the area in hope of crushing the player(s), which can be avoided by moving around or dashing out of the way. He can also randomly take longer to bounce to mix up his rhythm. He has two type of jumps, one is lower and one is higher. When he hits the side of the screen while still ascending, he bounces off it and the arc continues in the opposite direction. When he hits the side while he is descending, he simply drops straight down, covering where dead spots in the corners would be if he always bounced off the side of the screen. In Simple mode, there is a longer delay between jumps, and he can only bounce with one jump pattern. In Expert mode, Goopy bounces much faster, with higher acceleration when jumping, and he falls faster.

Occasionally, he stops bouncing, pulls most of his body back, then throws himself towards the player(s), turning himself into a giant blue boxing glove and yelling "PTOO!" to punch them. The range of his punch is relatively short, so the player(s) can dodge it easily by running or dashing away. Crouching underneath the attack also dodges it, while giving the player(s) an opportunity to shoot him point blank. He also automatically changes directions depending on where the player(s) is, and continues bouncing where he is facing afterwards. The telegraph duration of him pulling back increases and decreases in Simple and Expert mode respectively.

After taking enough hits, Goopy will eventually stop and swallow a pill. He then grows twice as large as his original form. He spawns three pink question marks while he transforms, which are crucial to getting an A-Rank or an S-Rank as they are the only objects in this boss battle that can be parried, and getting those ranks require you to parry at least three objects.

Phase 2[]

"I'm a handsome slime bringing pain -- one bounce at a time!"

Goopy Le Grande, Phase 2 Death Screen

Hitpoints = 560/540/560

In this phase, Goopy grows about twice as large after eating a jellybean and gains some brown eyebrows. His slam covers more ground. He reuses his two previous attacks, but they are more powerful and harder to dodge to some extent:

  • Goopy still bounces around like he did in his first phase, but he takes slightly more time doing it. However, due to his body being larger, there is less room to dodge. In Simple mode, there are now two different heights of jumps.
  • He is now able to throw a punch using his own fist instead of morphing himself, and the range is longer. However, those punches are still avoidable when the player is in either the far left or far right side, and if there is no way to escape, it's ideal to just duck and shoot at the same time. The first time he does this attack, he blinks a few time before the punch.

After taking enough damage, he will stop bouncing, dazed, and is soon crushed by his own tombstone. However, in Simple mode, the tombstone doesn't crush him, and the battle simply ends with him dazed and defeated.

Phase 3[]

"I'm very smashing... even in grave situations!"

Goopy Le Grande, Final Phase Death Screen

Hitpoints = 372/504

Even after being crushed, Goopy continues the battle as a tombstone. He can only attack by sliding from left to right, stopping only momentarily to slam down onto the player(s) in attempt to crush them, as he is in the background and unable to cause damage otherwise. Goopy usually goes by the players 2-3 times before going for the slam. In Expert mode, his tombstone slides across faster, slams down faster, and is generally less predictable, sometimes slamming after just one passage.

The only way to damage him is by shooting at his face on the tombstone, which can be quite a hectic experience as player(s) have to shoot at him and try to avoid being crushed by him at the same time.

After taking enough damage, Goopy is defeated and his tombstone breaks in half, as the picture of his face gets "X" eyes representing death.

Trivia[]

  • He is basically the tutorial to get players well acquainted with the dashing and ducking features.
  • His name, Goopy Le Grande, means Goopy The Great in Italian.
    • "Le Grande" is also a pun on "El Grande" (Spanish for "The Big") and "Le Grand" (French for "The Big").
  • Unlike most bosses, Goopy Le Grande doesn't appear in the good ending with all other debtors, which leads to the assumption that he was actually killed.
    • He is also the second boss that doesn't appear in the good ending, with the first being The Root Pack, the third being Wally Warbles, and the fourth being Dr. Kahl's Robot. However, Wally Warbles and Goopy Le Grande have been confirmed by Designer Jake Clark to still be alive.
    • He could also probably be hidden by bigger characters. (Ex: Captain Brineybeard can be in front of Goopy Le Grande, thus completely hiding Goopy.)
  • Goopy Le Grande is the only boss in the game to never use any kind of projectile attack or minions to aid him.
    • However, he was originally going to have two little minions in the third phase. These small versions of Goopy behave similarly to Bothersome Blueberry in Forest Follies.
  • His Regular and Expert Mode knockout animation appears to be a pun on the acronym commonly found on tombstones (including his own), "R.I.P.", which stands for the Latin phrase "Requiescat In Pace" or "Rest In Peace" in English. The knockout animation takes the acronym literally and has the stone actually ripping in half.
  • According to early sketches shown in an interview, Goopy Le Grande was originally going to be called "The Great Slime".
  • In the early concepts of the game, Goopy would've been fought after the player exited through the tutorial door.
  • In the early beta versions, in his intro, Goopy Le Grande would be surprised when he makes eye contact with Cuphead and Mugman.
    • This is strikingly similar to Sally Stageplay's second phase intro, in which Sally will appear surprised with her hands on her face while making eye contact with Cuphead. They both even have the lines which indicate the direction they are looking in.
  • Goopy originally had Honeycomb Herald as his battle theme rather than Ruse Of An Ooze.
  • Goopy's old death phrase was: "You were slimed! I guess you should try harder."

Inspiration and Similarities[]

Goopy Le Grande's design are homages to the Slime, a common enemy and the mascot of Dragon Quest, and cartoons such as Ub Iwer's Balloon Land. Goopy eating a jellybean to grow larger is a secret nod to A Boy and his Blob.

  • The background seems to resemble those in Disney films such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Bambi.
  • The way Goopy lunges in the form of a boxing glove in the first phase resembles an attack done by The Blob from ClayFighter.
  • His "Grave Danger" attack during his tombstone phase may be a reference to the Whomp enemy in the ''Super Mario'' franchise.
  • Some of Goopy's facial expressions in both his 1st and 2nd phases resemble Brom Bones' from the ComiColor Cartoon The Headless Horsemen. Likewise, his facial expression on his tombstone resembles those of the numerous animated tombstones in Swing You Sinners!, a 1930 Fleischer Studios cartoon that is referenced many times throughout the game.
  • His theme has a motif from the Punch-Out!! the soundtrack, specifically from Little Mac Down.
    • There's also references to the game in concept art.
  • There would be an attack that directly references Mike Tyson in Mike Tyson's Punch Out!! with his iconic winking attack, however it did not made it into the final game. A reference to the game is still made when Goopy punches in phase 2, where he would blink a few times the first time he uses that move.
