Golden Freddy is a ghostly animatronic bear and the secondary antagonist of the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise, with his biggest role being in Ultimate Custom Night. Golden Freddy's is haunted by at least one child ghost who is obsessed with revenge on their killer, William Afton.
History[]
Note: Given that the Five Nights at Freddy's story is told out of chronological order, the history of Golden Freddy is presented in the order the events occur to him.
Backstory[]
Golden Freddy may be Fredbear, the original mascot of Fredbear's Family Diner. At least one child was presumably lured by William Afton in the Spring Bonnie costume to the Safe Room, and was murdered, being stuffed into the Golden Freddy suit. Afterwards, the Puppet allowed the child to possess Golden Freddy. Due to the smell from the bodies, the animatronics were put in storage, but kept for spare parts.
Five Nights at Freddy's 2[]
The company tried to repair Golden Freddy and the others, fitting them with facial recognition software, but they were deemed ugly, so were left for spare parts in the Parts/Service room. Withered Golden Freddy was presumably among the animatronics who attacked William when he infiltrated the Pizzeria as a security guard. In the minigame SAVETHEM, Golden Freddy can be seen in various rooms, disappearing if Freddy comes near to him.
Withered Golden Freddy becomes active on Night 6, and can teleport to the Office hallway in the form of a floating head, or within the Office itself to kill the next night guard, Jeremy Fitzgerald. Jeremy fends him off by putting on the Freddy Head the moment he sees Freddy inside The Office, fooling the facial recognition. As well as this, Jeremy could turn off the Flashlight while Golden Freddy was in the hall. After Fritz Smith's shift on Night 7, where the animatronic's AI levels are altered, Golden Freddy, along with the other original animatronics, is kept.
Golden Freddy appears in his FNaF 1 form in the Night 3 cutscene. Here, standing up, he looks at Freddy, who is the players point of view, alongside Bonnie and Chica.
Five Nights at Freddy's 1[]
Golden Freddy takes on a more repaired form, but is not used in the animatronic line up. Golden Freddy's jumpscare could be heard cutting off Phone Guy's Night 4 phone call, implying he was the one who killed him.
During Mike Schmidt's shift, Golden Freddy does not openly attack him. However he does turn up as an easter egg. When checking CAM 2B, the Freddy poster can change into a Golden Freddy poster, accompanied by a giggle from the child possessing him, at which point Golden Freddy appears in the Office. The only way Mike can save himself is by flicking the monitor up, which causes Golden Freddy to vanish.
Five Nights at Freddy's 3[]
Golden Freddy is implied to the the soul that is the protagonist on the Night 5 minigame. The child makes their way to the Safe Room where the souls of the other MCI victims are blocking the exit from the terrified William. They chase him around the room, until William tries to protect himself by putting on the Spring Bonnie suit. Upon doing so he suffers a springlock failure and is then left there by the group. Golden Freddy appears in Happiest Day. Here, the child possessing him is standing behind a table. They are given cake by the Puppet, and, after the Golden Freddy mask appears on the child's face, they vanish, leaving the mask behind.
UCN[]
Withered Golden Freddy appears as a customisable animatronic in Ultimate Custom Night. Withered Golden Freddy will occasionally teleport in the Office in his usual slumped form. There are two ways to fend him off. The first involves flicking the monitor up. The second involves putting on the Freddy Head to make him disappear. If the protagonist fails, Golden Freddy kills him.
It is heavily implied that the soul within Golden Freddy was the one who set up Ultimate Custom Night as William's personal hell after the events of Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator. They are referred to are "The one you should not have killed", and can occasionally be seen smiling maliciously at William. They also seemingly speak though Happy Frog, Nedd Bear, and Orville Elephant, leaving William vengeful messages. They are referred to as the Vengeful Spirit when doing this.
The final cut scene reveals Golden Freddy in his FNaF 1 form twitching constantly within pitch blackness. It is unclear whether their soul is moving on or not.
Five Nights at Freddy's: VR Help wanted[]
Golden Freddy is implied to be the princess in the minigame "princess quest". Golden Freddy when in game takes on Glichtrap and takes him down weakening the virus. The minigame can only be accessed on the mobile version of the game. If the player goes over the prize corner there is a chance they may be able to access it.
Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach[]
Golden Freddy makes a minor appearance as the princess and destroy's Glichtrap ending the virus supposedly.
FNaF World[]
Golden Freddy returns in this game as a playable character, which needs to be unlocked.
Golden Freddy's moves are:
- Jumpscare - Stuns all enemies for a few seconds.
- Rainy Day 2 - Temporarily decreases all enemies defense and damages all enemies multiple times.
- Haunting - Summons a ghost version of Freddy Fazbear that can Freeze an opponent for a short time. Doesn't work on bosses.
Golden Freddy is a support character, although not great, since Rainy Day 2 is the only move that can kill. He needs allies to survive, because he won't make it far alone.
Freddy in Space 2[]
Golden Freddy returns in this spin-off made to donate to St. Jude as one of the six playable characters, alongside Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, Foxy and The Puppet. Compared to others, he doesn't look human-like, but still has his original appearance.
FNaF AR: Spacial Delivery[]
Golden Freddy was added to FNaF AR on December 20th as a reward for the Community Quest. All of his items in the shop could be purchased using the very event tokens that lead to his arrival, except for his Lures, which used Faz-Coins.
Within the game, Golden Freddy acts as a sort of combination of almost all the current characters. His footsteps are like metallic springs moving, however they can change dependent on what mode he's in. Despite having different modes, he always haywires frequently. At the start of the encounter, the phrase "It's Me" and his face will flash up on screen. The player is given a tablet that allows them to rotate between multiple different mechanics, being the flashlight, the mask, the shocker and the timer.
The battle acts in 3 phases. Below is the modes which he can use in those three phases. They are chosen randomly, and once Golden Freddy is done using a mode, he cannot return back to it.
Freddy Fazbear Mode[]
Golden Freddy prefers to move while cloaked and charge at the player when they least expect it, his static is somewhat easy to track without the use of the flashlight. He decloaks from a mediocre distance from the player, shock him to move onto the next phase or win.
Toy Freddy Mode[]
Golden Freddy gains the power drain ability, where the player's power will quickly start depleting when a warning goes off. The player must use the mask to stop it. His static is medium at best and can be somewhat tracked without the flashlight, however it is recommended. When he decloaks, shock him to move onto the next phase or win.
Mangle Mode[]
Golden Freddy will now drop his top-hat, his microphone and his limbs onto the floor, which the player must collect quickly. During this, his footsteps become much faster. Instead of dropping 3 parts, he will only drop 1. When he charges, shock him to go to the next phase or win.
Springtrap Mode[]
Golden Freddy can haywire in this phase only. The player must look at him while he has white eyes, but look away when red. His static is now almost impossible to keep track off without the flashlight. When he does charge, he does it from up close, and might decloak. Shock him to move onto the next phase, or win.
Ballora Mode[]
Golden Freddy now keeps track of the player's movement speed, and the player must move slow to avoid a jumpscare. During this, his footsteps become much faster. Collecting three objects he drops will make him charge at the player, always decloaking. Shock him to win or move onto the next phase. As well as this, the Minireenas return and act the same way; crawling up the screen needing to be knocked off.
Trivia[]
- It was heavily implied that Golden Freddy is a springlock suit hybrid, like Springtrap, in the sense of the ability to be both an animatronic behavior and a wearable suit, given that the Purple Guy was originally theorized to have worn the Golden Freddy suit to lure the five children to the back and killed them. The endoskeleton is visible in the images of Golden Freddy, shares the yellow color, and in one of the minigames in Five Nights at Freddy's 3, Golden Freddy is shown entertaining children on a stage alongside Springtrap.
- Those who do not believe this theory tend to think his supernatural powers, indicate he merely ghost taking the form of Fredbear.
- As of now, there are heavy implications from the second and third games that "Golden Freddy" was a Fredbear suit that was used at Freddy's, separate from the suit used at Fredbear's, similar to how there was a Spring Bonnie animatronic in both locations.
- This was proven true in Five Nights at Freddy's 4 where Fredbear was shown multiple times to function as both an animatronic and suit, as well as in the Fazbear's Frights story The New Kid where it was repeatedly stated that Fredbear is a springlock suit.
- Since Golden Freddy has the phrase "IT'S ME" whenever he is summoned, and crashes the game if one has 1-9-8-7 as the custom A.I. in the Custom Night, many players suspected that he was the cause of The Bite of '87. This does not work on the updated version of the first game. However it was debunked due to the heavy implication that one of the Toy animatronics was the culprit, as well as Golden Freddy being withered and decommissioned at this time.
- As of version 1.13, setting the A.I. levels to 1/9/8/7 on Custom Night causes Golden Freddy's kill screen to appear, forcing the game to close. This was put in by Scott Cawthon to end the rumors of The Bite of '87, stating that entering the input 1/9/8/7 would have an alternate ending.
- Many theories say Golden Freddy was originally brown, but being in the dark, never being used or the lighting turned him yellow. However, in the third game, this theory was confirmed to be false, because, in the "Stage01" minigame, Golden Freddy still retains his color.
- Golden Freddy's kill screen in the first game is similar to the Freddy hallucination screen but is colored gold and without eyes.
- In the trailer for Five Nights at Freddy's 2, one of the children's drawings, depicts Golden Freddy with the endoskeleton eyes singing to them.
- The animatronic noise that killed Phone Guy is the same as Golden Freddy's, implying that he killed him.
- Golden Freddy's scream in Five Nights at Freddy's is a slowed down version of the other animatronics' scream, supporting the theory that the Puppet stuffed deceased children in the animatronic suits (as seen in the "Give Gifts, Give Life" minigame) with the fifth child possessing Golden Freddy. This theory is confirmed in the third game, most evidently in "Happiest Day".
- In Five Nights at Freddy's 2, its scream is also different, being a louder version of the normal scream, and clips midway.
- Before the third game, Golden Freddy was believed to be the suit Afton wore to kill the children, however, it is later revealed in later games that Spring Bonnie was the suit used, but the theory is still somewhat popular. Indeed, it is possible that Afton used the Golden Freddy suit to kill a second group of children during FNaF 2, as Golden Freddy is the only spare yellow suit in that pizzeria.
- Although his full name is Michael Brooks in Five Nights at Freddy's: The Silver Eyes, the events of the novel, while considered canon by the creator, is an alternate continuity to the game series. The Survival Logbook heavily hints that Golden Freddy's name is actually Cassidy.
- In Freddy in Space 2, Golden Freddy is the only playable character who still looks like an animatronic, unlike the other characters.
- Golden Freddy is one of the few animatronics who doesn't appear in Five Nights at Freddy's VR: Help Wanted. However, there is an Easter Egg which may relate to him. In the Curse of Dreadbear DLC, after completing a level, the player can find inside the warehouse three Halloween posters which previously appeared in the images of the salvaged animatronics from Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator. If the player throws some darts at the posters when they're identical, then the sentence "IT'S ME" will appear, along with music and flashing lights.
- Strangely, Withered Golden Freddy in Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is more beaten up than his version in the original. It is unknown why Golden Freddy seems to be less damaged in the first game, since Five Nights at Freddy's takes place after the events of Five Nights at Freddy's 2, and would have likely not have been repaired.
- In the bad ending of FNaF 3 Golden Freddy appears in it and unlike the other souls has two glowing eyes. This has led many fans to believe that Golden Freddy has two souls inside of him rather than one.
- This is most likely, Withered Golden Freddy could somewhat parallel of what happened to Fredbear, after the Bite of 1983. Its believe since that incident, the Fredbear Family Dinner was permanently closed, while the abandoned Fredbear suit went break down/rust.
- And as for why Golden Freddy has less damage than Withered Golden Freddy in FNAF 1, its because all the Withered Animatronics from FNaF 2 have been converted to Classic Animatronics. Thus would explain why Fredbear and Golden Freddy were connected each any further.
- Although it's possible that his FNAF 2 counterpart is an empty, derelict Fredbear suit with a few animatronic parts still inside, while his FNAF 1 counterpart is a ghost taking the form of a yellow Freddy Fazbear. This theory explains his animatronic-like behavior in FNAF 2, and also why his A.I. can be adjusted in the second game, but not in the first game, this also explains how he is able to appear in the first game's office when both doors are closed.
- Their jumpscares also differ. In the first game Golden Freddy's jumpscare crashes the game, while in the second game Withered Golden Freddy's jumpscare only kills the player and doesn't crash the game.
- Five Nights at Freddy's AR: Special Delivery is the first game in the series where Golden Freddy stands up.
- While Golden Freddy is confirmed to be one of William Afton's victims, some speculate that the dead child, Cassidy, shares the body with the Crying Child from the fourth game according to FNaF Survival Logbook. A previous but still prevalent theory was that the spirit that possessed Golden Freddy was just that of the Crying Child. This can still be reasonably followed if the player ignores the events of most books and everything after Ultimate Custom Night.
- However, this is very unlikely, mainly because in all cases in which possession has been seen in the series, physical contact with the animatronic at the time of death is required to subsequently possess it. Something that does not happen with the Crying Child, who was able to survive the bite for a few more days before eventually dying in the hospital, making it impossible for the Crying Child to have possessed Fredbear.
- The face of "The One You Should Not Have Killed" is an edited picture of Jason Cawthon, the son of series creator Scott Cawthon.
- Their gender in the games is considered ambiguous. While Cassidy does speak with a feminine voice during Ultimate Custom Night, Scott Cawthon said that the voice shouldn't be immediately clear, and it could work as both a young boy and a young girl. If one believes Cassidy is "The One You Should Not Have Killed" or the missing kid in Midnight Motorist, then they are also referred to as a boy by Chica and Mangle (in The One's case) and by the orange man and the couch person (in the missing kid's case). The lines referring to "The One" can also be interpreted as referring to the fact that the Golden Freddy animatronic is male, while the ghost is a girl.
- But, as said above, "The One's" photo is a redacted photo of Scott's son.
- Their gender in other official works is changeable: female in novels, but male in movie.
- This discrepancy with Cassidy's gender is commonly used as an argument to suggest that Andrew is the spirit controlling UCN and not Cassidy.
- In Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach, the sprite of the Princess from the Princess Quest minigame was labelled "Cassidy", implying Golden Freddy to be the Princess' true identity. That said, it was later patched out and the sprite was renamed to "the Princess" (the same name it had in the original Help Wanted mobile port) for currently unknown reasons.
- It's possible that the Fredbear that appears in Ultimate Custom Night isn't the only version of Fredbear, considering that the Fredbear seen in Five Nights at Freddy's 4's minigames has a different design, similar with Spring Bonnie cases (specifically a portlier body and a segmented head and jaw connected by moving actuators, something that UCN Fredbear and both forms of Golden Freddy lack).
- Nightmare Fredbear appears to be a "nightmarish" version of this iteration of Fredbear.
- Withered Golden Freddy is presumed to be Fredbear’s original form.
- It is theorized that the reason Cassidy both holds a grudge against William and is so powerful is because they were killed by a springlock failure unlike the other children giving her much more Agony than the other spirits.
