Gloomius Maximus is a fun-stealing pirate who lives in space, and the main antagonist of the 2002 DTV CGI film Rolie Polie Olie: The Great Defender of Fun. He is the former archenemy of Space Boy and Space Dog, Willy, and Wally Jolly, and especially Olie, Zowie and Billy, before he became a nicer bot due to Zowie's act of kindness. His collaborators are the Group of Seven Soldiers who help as he asks for support.
He is considered to be the sole antagonist of the series, because he is the only villain who appears on the series.
He was voiced by James Woods (who also voiced Hades in Hercules, Falcon in Stuart Little 2, Dr. Phillium Benedict in Recess: School's Out, Maximilian "Max" Bercovicz in Once Upon a Time in America, Ned Trent in The Specialist, Lester Diamond in Casino, Martin Walker in White House Down, Captain Ahab in The Adventures of Moby Dick, Byron De La Beckwith in Ghosts of Mississippi, Owlman in Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths, George Sheffield in Scarface: The World is Yours, and himself in Family Guy) in the film, and then by the late Paul Haddad onwards.
Appearance[]
Gloomius Maximus looks as though he had parts that came straight from a junkyard. His head has a blue paint job and appears to be rusting around his eyes, under his square nose and on his red lips. He wears a red pirate outfit, a golden belt with the letter G on it, a red bicorne hat with a feather on it, a single black boot on his left foot and has a brass sword-like appendage for a left hand and a brass peg leg replacing his right leg.
Personality[]
Gloomius Maximus hates anything fun and happy in general. According to what he told Zowie, this is because he never had a birthday party of his own as a little bot nor was he ever invited to one, so he decided that if he cannot be happy, no one can. So, he began using his un-funerators to suck the happiness and fun out of any bot, object and planet he came across. His arsenal of un-fun weaponry include his Ultra Gloomerator Glum Beam, capable of rendering a person downer than the downy dumps and fall asleep and unable to wake up. Only the power of laughter is capable of undoing Gloomius weapons affects and sending him into retreating. Like all pirate sterotypes, he took anything that's not his, such as when he stole Zowie's Super Silly Ray in his first appearance. He hated laughter, his only weakness, as it forced him to retreat. He is shown to be very ticklish and temperamental, as seen when he burst out laughing when the Jollies used their swords to tickle him and when Olie threw a Tickle-Me-Pickle at him. He was immune to fun weapons such as the Super Silly Ray because of his extremely bad mood, but after giving it a tune up, Olie is able to blast a billion bubbles at him, and he finally started to feel its effects, and he acted enthusiastic, jovial, and giddy. After getting his happy gear running for the first time in so many years, thanks to Olie using the Super Silly Ray and Zowie's act of kindness of inviting him to her birthday party, he became a completely different bot altogether, declaring "I'm the happiest bot in the universe!".
Biography[]
Gloomius Maximus first appears when he arrives in his spaceship at the Galaxy of Goofs and uses his un-funerators to suck all the fun out the funny planets and stars, turning them gray making them all gloomy and doomy. Space Boy and Space Dog then arrive in determined to save the funny planets and stars' fun. Space Boy, Space Dog, Olie, Zowie and Billy who were watching the Space Boy episode, start laughing which causes the funny planets and stars of the Galaxy of Goofs to turn back to their normal colors getting their fun back, making Gloomius disguised and he and his Badies then leave.
Later, when Olie, Zowie and Billy launch invitations to Zowie's birthday party in mail rockets, one of them was about to land at Pappy's house. But Pappy missed catching it and the mail rocket goes all the way up into outer space. When the mail rocket leaves the Polie Planet, it arrives at the Galaxy of Gloom and Gloomius finds it through his ship's telescope. Gloomius then activates his ship's claw and he grabs the mail rocket and brings it in. When Gloomius picks up the mail rocket, it opens and the invitation falls out and Gloomius finds out about Zowie's birthday party. Gloomius was angered by this since he hates birthday parties, since he never had a birthday party himself, or been invited to one, which is the real reason why he is so gloomy and in a very bad mood. So he sets off to the Polie Planet in determine to make Zowie's birthday miserable.
When Gloomius and his Badies arrive at the Polie Planet, he uses his new secret weapon, his Ultra Gloomerator Glum Beam and zaps it onto the Polie Planet and gloomerates Olie and Zowie's parents, Percy and Paulina, their Uncle Giz and Pappy, turning them all bluzy and snoozey, making them fall asleep being unable to wake up. Gloomius then arrives at the Polieville Park and he and some of his Badies start using his Fun Suckers to suck the fun out of everything in the park, turning them gray making them all gloomy and doomy just like when they did with the Galaxy of Goofs earlier. Olie then has an idea and he, Billy, Spot and Pappy's teeth arrive at the park and plan to use Zowie's birthday present they made for her, the Super Silly Ray to zap Gloomius with silly stuff. When Gloomius finds them, Olie zaps two of Gloomius' Badies with the ray's bubbles it shots making them act silly. But when Olie tried to zap Gloomius with the ray, it was unable to effect him due to his extremely bad mood, and he tells Olie and Billy it will take a billion bubbles to funerate him. Olie and Billy then make a fun for it and Gloomius orders his Badies to get the Super Silly Ray from them, and two of the Badies give chase. While chasing after them, Space Boy and Space Dog arrive since Olie called the Space Boy Hotline earlier when they found out Percy, Paulina, Uncle Giz and Pappy were gloomerated. They tried to turn everything in the park back to normal by laughing, but it at first didn't work cause there wasn't enough of them to make a laugh riot. But then Zowie arrived with Percy, Paulina, Uncle Giz and Pappy after she woke them up turning them back to normal by tickling them. They then all laugh together and everything in the Polieville Park turn back to their normal colors getting their fun back. However, Gloomius succeeds to steal Zowie's Super Silly Ray and he and his Badies get back into their ship and fly away with it.
Gloomius was later seen in his ship watching the news bulletin about how Olie, Zowie, Billy, Spot, Pappy's teeth, Space Boy and Space Dog have saved Polieville Park's fun from him. When Olie tells the news reporter, Trixie Triangle that Pappy will be doing his Happy Tappy Dance at Zowie's party, Gloomius was disguised by this. However, when Pappy accidentally pops his happy gear after he fell while doing his dance, Gloomius has another evil plan and decides to send a Get Glum Card to Pappy in determine to make Pappy unhappy permanently. So Gloomius sends some of his Badies in his flying space row boat down to the Polie Planet and orders them to deliver the Get Glum Card and make sure Pappy is never happy or tappy again. While Olie, Zowie, Billy, Percy and Uncle Giz were using items they were delivered to the Polies' house in mail rockets to try to find something to fix Pappy's busted happy gear, Uncle Giz finds a Tickle-Me-Pickle in one of them which tickles Pappy, seeming to succeed to fix him. However, while Pappy was getting ticked by the pickle, the Badies arrive at the Polies' house and sent the mail rocket with the Get Glum Card down. One of the Badies then rings and doorbell and Paulina opens the door finding the mail rocket unaware what it contained. When Paulina brings the mail rocket into the garage, it flies around and lands on the floor and opens and a lightning bolt flashes out of it. A thunder cloud then flies out of the mail rocket and it zaps Pappy with a lightning bolt and his happy gear pops out again. A stick puppet of Gloomius' face then comes out of the mail rocket and a recording of his voice welcomes the now unhappy Pappy to the glum side. Olie is disguised by this and kicks the mail rocket out of the garage and Pappy glumfully apologizes to Zowie glumfully telling her that he can't do any Happy Tappy Dance at her party. He then glumfully walks off and Gloomius' Badies tell him that Pappy is permanently unhappy, making him delighted.
Later, when the bots were getting Zowie's birthday party ready, Gloomius' Badies start causing some havoc at the park by popping the party balloons. When Uncle Giz, Binky and Zowie were blowing balloons, after Binky runs off with a red balloon after Uncle Giz blew him one, one of the Badies blows a red balloon to a huge size. When Zowie sees the huge balloon, she starts to float away, making Uncle Giz and the other bots chase after her. When Zowie floats by Pappy sleeping, he wakes up and grabs onto Zowie and the balloon floats all the way up into outer space with Zowie and Pappy holding onto it. Percy and Paulina when quickly get into their car, Cuffie and take off to rescue them. However, while Percy and Paulina were trying to find them, Olie and Billy spot them through Olie's telescope and notice that Gloomius' Badies were herding them with his space row boat, and Olie alerts Uncle Giz about it. While herding them, the Badies spin three arrow signs around changing the directions they were pointing in making them point the wrong ways so Percy and Paulina won't be able to catch up to and rescue Zowie and Pappy. Percy and Paulina get fooled when they see the wrong way pointing signs and fly to the Wormhole and sucked into it, and the Badies herd Zowie and Pappy all the way to Gloomius' ship and Gloomius kidnaps them. When Percy contacts Uncle Giz they were sucked into the Wormhole, Olie, Billy, Spot and Uncle Giz take off into outer space in their cardboard rocket and Giz's motorcycle, Motorboy, to rescue Zowie and Pappy. When Zowie and Pappy were inside Gloomius' ship, Gloomius welcomes them to his "house of gloom", and was pleased to see that Pappy got his Get Glum Card. Zowie then tells Pappy she wants to go home since she wants her birthday party, but Gloomius evilly tells her there won't be a birthday party, making Zowie upset. Zowie asks Gloomius why is he so gloomy, and he explains he always was, since he was a little bot. He then explains to Zowie he never had a birthday party himself, or been invited to one. Because of this, he declares if he can't have one, no one else could either. Olie, Billy, Spot and Uncle Giz then arrive to rescue Zowie and Pappy. Olie and Billy then fly in their cardboard rocket into Gloomius' ship and land inside it. Billy then finds Gloomius holding the Super Silly Ray. Olie then throws the Tickle-Me-Pickle they got in one of the mail rockets earlier at Gloomius using it as a secret weapon, making Gloomius start to laugh as the pickle tickles him. As Gloomius laughs, Spot gets the ray back and Olie uses it to make all of Gloomius' Badies laugh, and he also zaps Pappy with it as well to fix him. When Pappy's happy gear pops off and lands on the floor, Zowie picks it up and gives it back to Pappy, he pushes the gear back into him and finally, Pappy gets completely fixed up and is happy again, and the thunder cloud that was floating over his head turns into a white cloud and a rainbow appears and grass grows on the floor. Zowie and Pappy then get onto Uncle Giz's motorcycle and Olie, Billy and Spot get back into their cardboard rocket and the bots fly out of Gloomius' ship leaving him and his Badies all laughing hard, and Percy and Paulina finally make it all the way through the Wormhole.
Back on the Polie Planet, during Zowie's party, Percy flips a burger really high, it flies all the way up into space and Gloomius sees the burger which flies straight up by his ship, then falls all the way back down to the Polie Planet and lands in Percy's grill.
Later, when it was time to cut Zowie's tall birthday cake, after all the bots sing Have a Rolie Polie Birthday to Zowie, when Zowie was about to blow out her candles, there was suddenly a tremor, scaring all the bots in the process. They then notice Mr. Sunny moving away, noticing the Police Planet seems to be moving. Gloomius was suddenly at it again, he has attached his ship to the Polie Planet with a giant toilet plunger and started towing the Polie Planet away. He plans to tow the Polie Planet all the way to the Galaxy of Gloom to finally turn the Polie Planet gloomy and doomy once and for all, and Zowie's birthday won't happen. While towing the planet, Gloomius' ship towing it passes Planet Little Green and Big Jean and Little Green notice it. When Olie contacts them and asks them what's going on with their planet, Big Jean alerts Olie and all the other bots that Gloomius is towing their planet with his ship, taking them to the Galaxy of Gloom. When Olie and the other bots find out what's happening, Olie tries to call Space Boy, but he wasen't there right now, so Olie had to leave a message for him on the answering machine. Percy and Uncle Giz then have an idea, and he attaches Cuffie with a rope to the Polies' house. He and Uncle Giz plan to use Cuffie and Motorboy to tug the Polie Planet back to the Polie Galaxy. When Percy and Uncle Giz take off, Billy spots them through the telescope. Percy then extends a cable from Cuffie to Motorboy, indetermind to use their vehicles to tow the planet back to where it belongs. As Percy in Cuffie and Uncle Giz on Motorboy starts tugging, they manage to stop the Polie Planet from being towed away. However, when they tow the planet back in the other direction, Gloomius notices his ship being pulled back and he looks through his telescope and spots Percy and Uncle Giz trying to tow the Polie Planet back. Gloomius gets angry when he sees them and orders his Badies more power. The Badie druming the drum drums faster, making the rowing Badies row faster and Gloomius' ship goes faster towing both the Polie Planet, and Percy and Uncle Giz. As Gloomius' ship tows the planet faster, Space Boy and Space Dog notice it and they fly after Gloomius' ship towing it. Space Boy and Space Dog arrives to help Percy and Uncle Giz tow the planet back. When Gloomius sees Space Boy and Space Dog helping Percy and Uncle Giz through his telescope, he orders his Badies it's time to play ball. So a couple of Gloomius' Badies start throwing bowling balls at them to try to knock them off the rope Cuffie and Motorboy were attached to. As the badies threw the balls at them, one of the balls hits Cuffie cracking his windsheild and Cuffie and Motorboy break off the rope they were attached to and Percy and Uncle Giz fly out of control toward an asteroid, and Gloomius' ship started towing the Polie Planet towards the Galaxy of Gloom again at a fast speed. Space Boy and Space Dog grab onto the rope as Gloomius' ship towed the planet faster, while Percy and Uncle Giz crash land on the asteroid and Olie loses contact with them. However, when on the asteroid, Percy and Uncle Giz find their space heroes, Willy and Wally Jolly, who they seen face Gloomius on TV before on their show when they were little bots. Willy and Wolly then promise to help Percy and Uncle Giz.
Back on the Polie Planet, Space Boy contacts Olie and he tells him they need more turbo power and everyone muct pitch in to stop Gloomius. So Paulina calls all the bots of Polieville indetermine to help tow the Polie Planet back to where it belongs. Olie then gets in idea and believes if they got Gloomius' happy gear going, he might never will try to un-funerate them ever again. So Olie, Zowie and their friends give the Super Silly Ray a jiffy tune up. While many vehicles around Pollieville were lining up to take off to tow the Polie Planet back to where it belongs, Olie, Zowie and Billy give the Super Silly Ray to Pappy to use it to make Gloomius giggle. Olie, Zowie, Billy and Pappy then take off in Pappy's flying house to fly to Gloomius' ship. While Olie, Zowie, Billy and Pappy fly to Gloomius' ship, Space Boy attaches cables between each Polieville vehicle as he preapares them to tow the planet back to the Polie Galaxy. After all the vehicles, the Jolly's rockets and Big Jean and Little Green's little round flying saucer (that arrives later when the vehicles started trying to tow the planet back), were attached, they all start pulling to try to tow the Polie Planet back, just as Gloomius finally arrvies with the planet at the Galaxy of Gloom. Gloomius gets more angry then ever when the vehicles start pulling the planet and his ship back and the drumming Badie tries again making the rowing Badies row more faster to still try to get the Polie Planet all the way into the Galaxy of Gloom, and soon Gloomius' ship and the Polieville vehicles, the Jolly's rockets and Big Jean and Little Green's flying sacuer start a tug of war on the planet.
Olie, Zowie, Billy and Pappy then arrive at Gloomius' ship and Olie jumps into it. Olie then aims the Super Silly Ray at Gloomius, but Gloomius still refuses to think his bubble shooting ray will make him happy. Gloomius then threats to un-funerate Billy if he doesn't give the ray, but Billy tells Olie to blast him. Olie then shoots billions and billions of bubbles at Gloomius. Gloomius at first tries to stay gloomy and runs off to try to escape in his space row boat, but Olie manages to shot billions of bubbles at Gloomius, and as soon as he was hit by all the bubbles, he managed to smile and start happily laughing and dancing around, and his Badies start happily laughing as well. Pappy then orders Gloomius to let the Polie Planet go, and Gloomius agrees. One of the Badies pulls a lever and the giant toilet plunger Gloomius used to make his ship tow the planet pops off it and all the bots driving their vehicles cheer and the Polieville Bots, Percy, Uncle Giz, the Jolly's, Space Boy, Space Dog, Big Jean and Little Green tow the Polie Planet all the way back to the Polie Galaxy. After Gloomius and his Badies happily laugh and dance around, Zowie asks Gloomius to come to her birthday party. Gloomius remembers he never been to a birthday party before, and never even had one himself, but Gloomius comes to her party as Zowie had an idea.
Back on the Polie Planet as it was now back where it belongs, Zowie gives Gloomius her own party and Gloomius' happy gear finally starts running for the first time ever in so many years, and he was now a very happy bot as he declares, "I'm the Happiest Bot in the Universe!". When the party was over, Gloomius wishes Zowie a happy birthday and he and his Badies leave in his space row boat as all the bots say good bye to him. The redeemed and now happy Gloomius then flies away in his ship as he plans to now give out tons of fun of everyone.
