Drago Bludvist is the main antagonist of DreamWorks' 29th full-length animated feature film How To Train Your Dragon 2. Although he is absolutely insane and irredeemably evil in the film, it was originally intended for Drago to return in DreamWorks' 36th full-length animated feature film How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and redeem himself after realizing the errors of his ways, giving dimension to his character.

He was intended to be voiced by Djimon Hounsou again.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World[]

Shortly after his defeat on Berk, Drago Bludvist awakes in a seemingly deserted island, having been washed ashore with the wreckage of the battle against Hiccup and Toothless. However, Drago ends up discovering that a territorial dragon already lived on the island, much to his chagrin.

While trying to survive on the island, Drago somehow realizes that the Warlords have replaced him within his own fleet and had hired Grimmel the Grisly to hunt down Toothless and the rest of the Berkian Dragons. Furious for having been replaced, Drago determines himself to get back with his fleet and reclaim his position as head of the world army that was being assembled by the Warlords. However, he realizes that to do so, he has to befriend the island's dragon to make his way off of the island.

In the end, Drago ends up developing some kind of respect and affection for the island's dragon who saves his life. Leaving all his prejudices and hatred towards dragons behind, Drago and his dragon leave the island and ultimately join the Dragon Riders on their ultimate battle against Drago's former army and Grimmel.

However, director Dean DeBlois struggled to write Drago into the third film's story until Steven Spielberg wisely suggested him to drop out Drago from the story. While Spielberg assured him that it was ambitious and noble notion to try to add dimension to Drago's character, his redemption story needed much more screentime than he could provide, so DeBlois ultimately wrote out Drago from the plot and refocused it on Hiccup, Toothless and the female Night Fury.

Trivia[]

  • As Drago Bludvist's return was ultimately scrapped, it's still debated whether Drago survived his defeat at the end of How to Train Your Dragon 2 or not. However, it's likely that he didn't as the loss of his prosthetic arm would have rendered him unable to swim and he couldn't breathe underwater like his Bewilderbeast.
    • It should be noted that the original version of the third film started immediately after the second film's ending. In the finished version, Grimmel the Grisly mentions that it has passed a year after Drago's defeat. Had Drago survived, he surely would have resurfaced by then.
  • Had Drago been featured in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, his change of heart would have made him a redeemed villain and would have averted his current status as Pure Evil.
