Now you're on my time, you little SKUNK! Give me the crystals!
~ Dr. N. Tropy in Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped.
ENOUGH! I won't be foiled by a fleabag! Time to die!
~ Dr. N. Tropy having a breakdown as he tries to kill Crash one last time in Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time.

Dr. Nefarious Tropy (or N. Tropy for short) is the secondary antagonist of the new timeline of the Crash Bandicoot franchise.

He is an evil scientist who specializes in time travel and was an ally to Dr. Neo Cortex and the right-hand of Uka Uka in their quest for world domination, but later betrays them and teams up with a female counterpart of himself in order to destroy all reality and remake the timeline in their twisted image.

He was voiced by Michael Ensign (in Warped, Crash Team Racing and Crash Nitro Kart), Corey Burton (in N. Sane Trilogy and Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fuelled) and JP Karliak in Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time.

Biography[]

Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped![]

He created the Time Twister Machine in Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped!. He was summoned by Uka Uka to assist Dr. Neo Cortex in their plans for world domination. Tropy was the third boss faced in the game, but was eventually defeated by Crash who gained the Super Spin ability upon defeating him.

Crash Bandicoot: Wrath of Cortex[]

He appears in the opening cutscene during a meeting with Uka Uka, Cortex, N. Gin, Dingodile and Tiny Tiger, where he makes a suggestion to use Crunch Bandicoot to destroy Crash.

Crash Twinsanity[]

In Twinsanity, he teams up with Nitrus Brio and N. Gin and believing Crash knew the location of the Evil Twins' treasure, the doctors fight Crash after he escapes N. Gin's battleship, but are both defeated by the bandicoot. Tropy reappears later with other villains in the Tenth Dimension, close to laying his hands on the treasure. When Cortex remarks that the treasure is stolen property, Tropy calls him out on seemingly developing a sense of morality, only to learn that Spyro the Dragon has come to retrieve his riches. The dragon breathes fire on N. Tropy's group, leaving their fate unknown.

Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time[]

Trapped with Uka Uka and Dr. Cortex in the Bone Yard (a level from Crash Bandicoot 3), he and Uka Uka actively try to escape the portal. As N. Tropy is arguing with Cortex about the chance to escape, Uka Uka with all his strength creates a Quantum rift (before passing out from exhaustion). Finally free, N. Tropy encourages Cortex to leave Uka Uka behind and they set off to conquer the multi-dimensions.

In their next appearance, N. Tropy and Cortex are seen creating the Rift Generator to gain access to all dimensions. After Cortex dismisses N. Gin and N. Brio's projects, N. Tropy sends them to travel to the Hazardous Waste Dimension & Tranquility Falls Dimension respectively warning them to anticipate Crash & his allies to stop them.

Following the defeat of Dr. Cortex in the 11th Dimension, N. Tropy, through a hologram, ridicules him and reveals that he never intended to simply conquer the multiverse. He, with his new partner (his female dimensional counterpart from Tawna's timeline) plan to use the Rift Generator to recreate the timeline where they are gods and where everyone except for themselves were wiped from existence. Enraged by this betrayal, Cortex decides to join his enemies in stopping the N. Tropy's.

Once Crash and his allies gather all four Quantum masks, they infiltrate Bermugula's orbit where N. Tropy and his dimensional counterpart command Nitrous Oxide to prevent their enemies from reaching the Rift Generator. Shortly afterwards the two N. Tropys begin flirting with each other (Much to Crash, Coco, Tawna, Nitrous Oxide, and Cortex's disgust and to Dingodile's amusement as they watch on screen). Later Tawna attempts to take the two doctors down on her own but is quickly defeated before Female N. Tropy mocks Tawna about killing her dimension's Crash and Coco. The rest of heroes arrive but are quickly separated from a Quantum Rift.

After Crash/Coco defeats N Tropy, Cortex attempts to mock Male N. Tropy for betraying him (using N. Tropy's very same words) before Dingodile and the Quantum Masks banish the two Doctor N. Tropys into an unknown Quantum Rift, leaving their fates unknown. The 100% completion epilogue reveals that the two villains haven't been seen since their defeat, but hints at their possible return by reminding that "evil geniuses are harder to squash than cockroaches".

Spin-offs[]

Crash Team Racing[]

He also appeared in Crash Team Racing as a secret unlockable driver who could be obtained by beating his set records for Time Trials on each track.

Crash Bandicoot 2: N-Tranced[]

Due to Cortex's defeat in Crash Bandicoot: A Huge Adventure, Uka Uka turns to N. Tropy for help. The doctor looks into the future with his device and sees himself together with the bandicoots. Misinterpreting this as them being on his side, he kidnaps Coco, Crunch, and Fake Crash so his friend N. Trance can brainwash them into doing their bidding. However, he fails to realize that Fake Crash isn't the real Crash Bandicoot until the doppelgänger is defeated in battle. Tropy leaves N. Trance to try and stop Crash while he escapes to parts unknown. Only after collecting the Gems and Gem Shards in the game Crash is able to fight him and prevails in the end. N. Tropy is captured by the bandicoots and forced to take a picture with them, ironically resulting in the same image the doctor saw through his device.

Crash Nitro Kart[]

N. Tropy returns in Crash Nitro Kart . Again serving as an unlockable driver and a ghost for Time Trials. He is unlocked the same way as in CTR and is a part of Team Cortex.

Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled[]

N. Tropy returns again in the remaster for Crash Team Racing serving the same role he had in the original game. He is a Speed class driver.

Non-Canon Appearances[]

Main article: Dr. Nefarious Tropy (Traveller's Tales)

Personality[]

N. Tropy is an evil, smug, arrogant, and treacherous person who has an unhealthy obsession with time. His personality is in contrast to Cortex's childish and short-tempered personality. N. Tropy acts with a calm and collected demeanor, complete with a smooth British accent. His quotes in all of his appearances in racing games include time jokes and stereotypical British comments such as "Blimey!" or mentions of tea. In a deleted scene from Crash Twinsanity, N. Tropy is shown to spill his tea as he heard Moritz talking about riches. Tropy is also highly intelligent and manipulative, his technological breakthroughs arguably the most advanced of all of Uka's scientists, although the doctor must constantly maintain his time traveling technology to make sure it all runs like clockwork (to the point he apparently shows signs of obsession compulsion). Otherwise the results could be disastrous; as previously seen with his Time Twister machine when he was not around to take care of it.

Tropy always acts cool-headed, however, behind that coldness, he is shown to be more weak-minded and aggressive than he looks as soon as anyone starts to irritate him: he is very quick to get frustrated when anyone doesn't listen to him, things don’t go his way, or he repeatedly misses his target. As a result, he tires easily, which makes him vulnerable in a fight. Like Cortex, N. Tropy is also highly pompous, irritable, and foul-tempered, venting his frustrations at his associates or blaming them for his errors, something N. Trance was perfectly willing to call him out on, without fearing him.

Dr. Nefarious Tropy is a tall and blue humanoid with black eyebrows and two hairy portions emerging from his beard akin to hair. In Wrath or Cortex he primarily wore a white lab coat and gold clock-themed armor. In Crash Twinsanity, the face of the clock is purely white and he wears gold-colored boots.

In Crash 4: It's About Time, N. Tropy is revealed to be much more evil than previously led on. He is more than willing to annihilate the entire multiverse and everyone in it in order to rebuild the timeline in his own twisted image and reforge himself as a god-like being. To this end, he teamed himself with the only other being who would agree with his insane plan: a female counterpart of himself who is just as ruthless as he was. He's also shown to be attracted to those who are just as evil as himself, as seen when he constantly flirts with his female equivalent over their shared love for destruction and despair.

Overall, Nefarious is one of the most evil villains in the Crash Bandicoot franchise, as he attempted to destroy the multiverse for his own sadistic, malevolent pleasure.

Powers, Abilities and Weaknesses[]

N. Tropy is a highly intelligent engineer specializing in time travel. As such, he can create highly advanced devices such as the Time Twister and a steam powered Time Machine that he wears like armor. With his TimeStaff and Time Machine Suit, N. Tropy is capable of manipulating matter, shifting time and emitting energy waves. However, using these devices can greatly drain him, leaving him open to attack.

Quotes[]

Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped[]

Well, haven't we gotten far for a pair of fuzzy marsupials? I am Dr. Nefarious Tropy, master of time and the creator of the very Time Twister machine you see before you. Uka Uka and Dr. Cortex have sent me to end this little charade, so you won't be leaving my area with the crystals. I swear it!
~ Dr. N. Tropy introducing himself to the Bandicoots.
So, you pesky little rats aren't going to back off, eh? Just you continue to gather crystals and see what I do!
~ Tropy warning the Bandicoots.
AAARGH! You little vermin are way too stupid to understand what you're getting yourselves into! This time, you've done it!
~ Tropy preparing to fight Bandicoots himself.

Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time[]

Tropy: Hush, simpleton!
Cortex: Face it, N. Tropy, it's going to fail. Again.
Tropy: At least Uka Uka and I attempt to free us from this prison! I won't sit idly by and listen to your inane ramblings for another decade! And the way you chew.
~ Tropy and Cortex argue.
Leave him. He's served his purpose.
~ Tropy and Cortex escapes their prison and leaves Uka Uka behind.
Uka Uka unknowingly paved the way for our bright future. Once my Rift Generator is complete, dominion over all of time and space will be within our grasp! By my calculations, our enemies are already moving against us. And We. Will. Prevail.
~ Tropy on his evil plot.
Tropy: I knew you would be unable to handle this simplest of tasks.
Cortex: Gloat all you want, I quit. If you need me, I'll be on a tropical island somewhere. Alone.
Tropy: How fortunate. You see, I no longer have need for our alliance. I've found a new partner... and a new plan.
Cortex: You were scheming behind my back?
Tropy: Of course.
~ Tropy and Cortex.
The Rift Generator has capabilities far beyond your meager imagination. You were content to simply rule over space and time, but I'd rather start from scratch. Erase it all. Wipe the slate clean. I'm going to reset the timeline and rebuild it to my liking. I will become a god! Which means you won't exist, and neither will those featherbrained masks, or those meddling marsupials! *maniacal laugh*
~ Dr. N. Tropy betraying Cortex and revealing his ultimate plan to destroy the multiverse.
Let's make this fun. Give them a sporting chance.
~ Tropy about to fight Crash Bandicoot.

Trivia[]

  • Dr. Nefarious Tropy's shortened alias, N. Tropy, is a play on the word "entropy".
  • During the development of Crash Twinsanty, it seems that N. Tropy was originally meant to have a more prominent role as the secondary antagonist to Crash and Cortex. Tropy was going to lead a team with N. Brio, N. Gin, and N. Trance to get the treasure of the Evil Twins before Cortex did. There are removed levels from Wumpa Island and Twinsanity Island where Crash, Cortex, and Nina had to keep facing previous bosses again like frog N. Brio (along with Koala Kong) and N. Gin (who attacked Nina at the Uka Tree). N. Trance was going to get wounded by Evil Crash during the treasure hunt and stalking of Cortex's group. Out of all this, only a cutscene at the end of the game remains, where Cortex, Crash, and Nina faced N. Tropy, N. Brio, and N. Gin at the treasure chamber.
  • N. Tropy was going to serve as the main antagonist of the cancelled game Cortex Chaos, which was meant to be a sequel to Crash Twinsanity, where Tropy gets back at Cortex by kicking him out of the league of evil scientists and replace him as the leader.
