Y'know, maybe Drek was right. I am a mad scientist.
~ Dr. Nefarious

Dr. Nefarious, also called Neffie, is the main antagonist of PlayStation's second full-length animated 2016 feature film Ratchet & Clank, and its tie-in video game on the PlayStation 4. Much like his original counterpart, Nefarious is an unstable mad scientist and the archenemy of Ratchet, Clank and Captain Qwark. However, unlike the original, who had some good qualities, this version is far more evil and destructive, as he planned to destroy an entire galaxy simply out of spite.

He was voiced by Armin Shimerman, who also played his original counterpart in the Ratchet & Clank video games, Bractor and Letek in Star Trek: The Next Generation, General Reginald Skarr in the Grim & Evil franchise, Professor Milo in Justice League Unlimited, Emperor Sun Hai and The Keeper in Jade Empire, Andrew Ryan in the BioShock video game series and Buttonwillow McButtonwillow in Regular Show.

Personality[]

Nefarious may be a homicidal maniac, but he sure can build a gun.
~ Captain Qwark foreshadowing Nefarious' nature.

Dr. Nefarious was a highly insane, twisted, unstable, and psychopathic scientist. He even went as far to destroy his former boss, Chairman Drek, and proved to be even more psychotic and dangerous.

Biography[]

Prior to the events of the film, Nefarious was a member of the Galactic Rangers who specialised in the invention and design of weapons. Captain Qwark, his leader, would constantly mistreat and tease him, as well as underfund his department. As a result, he betrayed the team and became imprisoned, but escaped, having Qwark fooled into believing he died trying.

In the film, he would work with Chairman Drek to supply him with the weapons he needed to complete his goal of harvesting chunks of planets to build a new world. He builds the deplanetizer to accomplish this, and supplies him with warbots in an attempt to destroy the Galactic Rangers in Aleero City.

When his plans are thwarted, he suggests to exploit Qwark's desire for fame in order to use him as their inside man, which they expected would give him the insight needed to defeat Ratchet and the Rangers. Drek succeeded in using the deplanetizer to destroy Novalis, a habitable planet that was evacuated beforehand.

Later on, it is revealed that Nefarious had bigger plans above Drek, which was to destroy every planet in the solar system. He betrays Drek after preying on Qwark's guilt over betraying Ratchet and Clank, by turning him to a sheep and sending him to his newly-formed home planet. His plan was to use the deplanetizer on Umbris, a planet composed of tetragen in which such an explosion would cause a chain reaction in the solar system.

The Galactic Rangers infiltrate the deplanetizer and Ratchet confronts Nefarious directly. He nearly succeeds in hitting Umbris with the deplanetizer, but hits New Quartu instead, and gets defeated by Ratchet in combat. He seemingly gets disintegrated when falling into the laser chamber, but lands on an unknown planet and becomes rebuilt into a robot, before descending into maniacal laughter.

Quotes[]

No! Get away from me! And..do not stick that thing in… (yelps and screams in pain) Quit…trying to repair me, you moron! (groans and grumbles in pain as Repairbots leave, then grabs one and pulls himself out) I AM NOT A ROBOT!!! (looks down at hands and starts laughing) Hehehehehahaha… Hahahahahahaha…Hahahahahahahahahaha!
~ Nefarious' Villainous Breakdown and evil laugh in the mid-credits scene of the 2016 film.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • Betrayed the Galactic Rangers' team and became a supervillain out of frustration for his mistreatment from Qwark.
  • He once tried to atomize Aleero City before being stopped by Qwark and the Galactic Rangers.
  • He built an army of Warbots for Drek to kill the Galactic Rangers. This also led to the creation of Clank, although this was accidental.
  • Created the Deplanetizer for Drek, which resulted in five planets and Novalis being blown up in order for Drek to make his perfect planet for the Blarg. During Novalis's destruction, over 43 million inhabitants were almost killed. While they all successfully evacuated, all of its citizens ended up losing their homes in the process.
  • Manipulated his boss, Chairman Drek, into tricking Qwark into betraying the rangers, and then betrayed him by turning him into a sheep, and then killed him by destroying the planet he was sent onto.
  • Attempted to use the Deplanetizer on Umbris, a planet composed of tetragen in which such an explosion would cause a chain reaction in the solar system simply to humiliate the Galactic Rangers.
  • Attempted to kill Ratchet, Clank and Captain Qwark by stopping them from preventing the destruction of Umbris, being willing to die himself if it assures the destruction of the solar system.
  • Unlike his original counterpart, he has no redeeming qualities and is taken much more seriously.
    • While he does have some comedic moments in the film, such as lying to a Blarg that he was writing in a food journal (although, given the context and the situation, it can be considered a natural and normal reaction to not have his plans revealed and spoiled), and briefly argued with Qwark about his one-liner not making any sense, these are quite rare and hardly distract from his villainy. He also doesn't show these in the video game either.
  • While Qwark mistreated him (Qwark said the Galactic Rangers couldn't provide Nefarious a proper laboratory for budget constraints and the derogatory names towards Nefarious were simply "terms of endearment", but they never gave him the proper merit and consideration for all his hard work and all the inventions created for Qwark and the Rangers), it is no excuse to destroy entire planets and kill countless innocent lives just to make the Galactic Rangers look incompetent.

Trivia[]

  • Nefarious's new personality in the reboots have gained quite a lot of criticism from fans, due to sharing very little similarities to his original counterpart, being a mad scientist actually being one of the few things they share in common.
    • Which has also lead some fans into comparing the original Chairman Drek to the new Nefarious and the new Drek being more similar to the original Nefarious.
