He is a mad scientist with an IQ of 300 and the tyrannical ruler of the Eggman Empire, who repeatedly plans to conquer the world. His plans of world conquest stem from a twisted and arrogant belief that all the world’s problems would solved if he were the one in control. Using his unmatched genius, Eggman began his plans, spending his entire life on his self-righteous mission. Though Sonic the Hedgehog and his friends have been able to keep him at bay each time, the doctor has never known true defeat and always returns with another evil scheme. He is Sonic the Hedgehog's arch-nemesis, whom has made his goal to always thwart his plans.
In Japanese, he was voiced by Masaharu Satō in Waku Waku Sonic Patrol Car and SegaSonic the Hedgehog, the late Chikao Ōtsuka, and currently by Kotaro Nakamura. In English, he was voiced by the late Deem Bristow and currently by Mike Pollock since 2005, who also voiced Zorc Necrophades, and the Garbageman in the 2003 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles TV series and The End in the same franchise.
Dr. Eggman is an obese, tall human with a small, bald head with blue eyes, a pinkish-red nose, and a bushy, mahogany-colored mustache.
During his early years, up until the Chaos incident, Dr. Eggman had a totally spherical torso with thin but proportionate arms and legs. He wore a red top with a short yellow cape, attached to his shoulders by a triangular collar, black pants with attached boots and a pair of large silver buttons on the front, white gloves, and mirrored pince-nez glasses. His nose was also bright red, and his mustache was neater, with only three tufts sticking out at each end. His eyes are almost never seen.
Since the Chaos incident, Dr. Eggman has remained obese, but has become somewhat taller and burlier, with a torso roughly shaped like an egg, hence his nickname; long, almost disproportionately thin arms and legs; and a softer pinkish nose. His mustache retains its length, density, and mass, while also becoming much more unkempt. For attire, the doctor now wears his tinted glasses, as well as green-lensed goggles known as the "Egg Goggles" as headwear; and an elegant, red coat sporting four square metal buttons on both sides of the chest in gold. These buttons have white straps that run across the coat's sides to identical buttons on the back. The coat also has silver, zipper-like linings down the back, arms, and front, yellow cuffs, and two extensions on the front that have large silver buttons. In addition, Dr. Eggman wears white, cuffless gloves on his hands and a pair of black pants with matching boots seemingly attached to them bearing circular plates on both sides of the ankles and three-square ones riding up the shin.
Personality[]
Dr. Eggman is the cruel, ruthless, cunning, egotistical, arrogant, tyrannical and megalomanical ruler of his namesake dominion the Eggman Empire, which consists of several refineries, factories and industrial areas dotted across South Island. Despite his defeat on South Island, the Doctor did not stop his aspirations but rather expanded them to include the whole world, with hopes of conquering it and turning it into his domain while also building his perfect city/theme park, shaped to appease the his ego - Eggmanland.
Dr. Eggman has a complete disregard for anyone but himself and is disrespectful in nature, happily mass producing his legion of robots while emitting smog into the atmosphere and pouring oil into the oceans. His IQ of 300 gives him a self-important personality, making him a vain and egotistical narcissist. However, this is his greatest weakness, as it can cause him to spend too much time being a blabbermouth and overlooking crucial flaws in his plans. He also has an inability to see his own flaws, considering himself to be the true form of genius.
Not content with world domination, Dr. Eggman aspires to have his genius rule all of creation and time itself. Realizing his robots alone are never good enough, Dr. Eggman, in later games, decides to team up with more powerful villains than himself, usually supernatural beings. This usually backfires and ends with utter failure, and, to add further insult, forcing him to team up with his hated enemies to ensure his prospects for world domination in the future.
Due to his tendency to make a poor judgment, and throw childish fits and tantrums, Sonic often mocks him, with him and several other characters seeing him as incompetent and something of a goofball. However, his goofy behavior can actually work in his favor, as it leads others, including Sonic himself, to be fooled into underestimating him.
Despite facing challenges, Dr. Eggman is still a serious, conniving and materialistic guy and while things might not work in his favor, he'll work behind the scenes to make sure he comes out on top and when everything's going his way, he is a very dangerous and valid threat to all who opposed his plans.
Despite his intelligence, Dr. Eggman can be very immature, throwing temper tantrums when Sonic manages to wreck into his plans. An example of his immaturity is in the ending of Sonic Unleashed, when his robot assistant begins to insult him over his constant failures and calls him a loser; Eggman yells "Oh, shut up!!", attempts to kick him only to comically fail, and then chases him through the desert while making agitated noises and violently flailing his arms in an attempt to grab him.
Regardless of his recurring comical quirks, Eggman has proven himself to be a genuine threat, with there being moments when those who usually mock him will treat him as such, and examples of his villainous and vituperative behavior at its worst would be in Sonic Adventure; where he attempted to nuke Station Square; Sonic Adventure 2, in which he nearly blew Sonic up before Tails and Amy respectively; Sonic Unleashed where he shattered the whole world after trapping Super Sonic and turning him into a Werehog; Sonic Colors, where he enslaved an alien race known as the Wisps to mind control the world with their energy; and Sonic Forces, where he tries to destroy all life so that the Eggman Empire can finally rule.
Earlier, Dr. Eggman used to have a more honorable rivalry with Sonic and saw him as a motivation for his life in general, as well as holding some kind of respect for one another (with there being instances he held sadness at the thought of his blue nemesis truly dying). In later years, Dr. Eggman has developed a bigger hatred towards Sonic and has started taking his goals more seriously than before (even his younger self was worried about how crazy he would become in the future). Although he still teams up with Sonic and his pals on occasions that involve more dangerous and evil threats, albeit the doctor often does this with ulterior motives in mind and the intention of backstabbing the hedgehog later on.
Despite everything, Dr. Eggman is not entirely evil or without humanity. He seemingly had a significant amount of respect and affection for his late grandfather, Gerald Robotnik, before learning of his vengeful plan to exterminate all life on Earth by crashing the ARK space colony into it, something which even he was horrified by, and also displays some level of care and admiration for Metal Sonic, his greatest creation. Most notably though, Dr. Eggman grows to love his AI creation Sage as his own daughter throughout the story of Sonic Frontiers, even reluctantly agreeing to team up with Sonic in order to defeat The End on account of her advice and bringing her back from the dead in the game's ending.
As Mr. Tinker, Dr. Eggman's personality is switched to being friendly and helpful, eager to use his talents to benefit others rather than himself.
Dr. Eggman appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. 4 as obtainable trophies from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. In Brawl, his trophy can be obtained by collecting 500 stickers, while in SSB4, his trophy can be obtained at random. Also in Brawl, Dr. Eggman's sticker increases Sonic's launch resistance. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Dr. Eggman appears as a grab-type legendary primary spirit. His ability boosts the effects of all electric attacks. He can be summoned using the cores of Dr. Crygor, Tamagon, Chansey, and any two Grab-type. He can also be fought in a spirit battle, which is against Roy Koopa and a metal Sonic the Hedgehog, with shooting items pulled towards the enemy and bob-ombs falling from the sky.
SEGA Heroes[]
Dr. Eggman appears in SEGA Heroes as an unplayable boss and the direct henchman for Dremagen, using two different Egg Mobile's (One from the first Sonic the Hedgehog, the other from Sonic Battle) and Flame Mobile from Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
Fall Guys[]
A costume appears of Dr. Eggman within the 2020 multiplayer party game Fall Guys, existing as one of the game's three Sonic the Hedgehog-themed costumes (alongside Super Sonic and Tails) released in the game's first F2P season.
Sonic the Hedgehog Minecraft Texture Pack[]
In the Minecraft texture pack created by Gamemode One, Dr. Eggman fights the player in a contraption that resembles a combination of the Titans from Sonic Frontiers, taking the place of the Ender Dragon.
Dr. Eggman also makes a brief appearance in the anime Hi sCoool! SeHa Girl. In the middle of the Sega Hard Girls' first exam in Border Break, Dr. Eggman hacks into the game world and begins to wreak havoc until Sonic appears to aid the girls in stopping him.
Wreck-it Ralph[]
Dr. Eggman makes a cameo in Disney's Wreck-it Ralph and its sequel as a member of a villain's support group called Bad-Anon.
When the first Sonic the Hedgehog title was released in 1991, Sega of America developed an origin for Sonic the Hedgehog and Dr. Robotnik which diverged from the back-stories created in Japan by Sonic Team. In this back-story, set on the planet Mobius, Dr. Robotnik was originally a benevolent scientist named Dr. Ovi Kintobor ("Ivo Robotnik" with the names spelt backwards; also, "ovi" is the Latin prefix meaning "egg"), a friend to Sonic who helped to develop the hedgehog's super-speed. In the Sonic the Comic, Kintobor was merged with a rotten egg and transformed into Dr. Robotnik after tripping over a cable with a rotten egg in his hand and suffering a severe electric shock. The result created Dr. Robotnik, who instantly became the opposite of the good Dr. Kintobor and would occasionally use the word "egg" in some words, with an example being "eggsactly".
In the United States, a different storyline was featured in a 14-page promotional comic book written by Francis Mao and designed to promote the game. The origin story was also adopted by Sega Europe, featuring in British publications such as the book Stay Sonic and later the comic book series Sonic the Comic, which was published from 1993 until 2002. In Sonic the Comic, Dr. Robotnik was the dictatorial ruler of planet Mobius for most of the comic's first 100 issues, while Sonic also had access to an AI computer program based on the personality of Dr. Kintobor. Initially, Dr. Robotnik's appearance in Sonic the Comic matched that of the video games, but from issue 22 onward the comic adopted his design from the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon show.
Also in 1993, Archie Comics began publishing its Sonic the Hedgehog comic book. The series is in a sense, a very loose continuation of ABC's Sonic the Hedgehog animated cartoon; as well as a mad scientist, Dr. Robotnik is portrayed as an oppressive and magisterial dictator who took control of Sonic's hometown during a coup d'etat. In recent years, the plot of the comic has changed to incorporate elements from the video games, with Dr. Robotnik being replaced by his more traditional video game counterpart. Eventually, legal disputes between Archie and former writers led to the comic series receiving a soft reboot during a crossover arc with Archie's Mega Man comics called Worlds Collide. In this story, Dr. Robotnik teams up with Mega Man's archenemy Dr. Albert W. Wily and unleashes a phenomenon called the Super Genesis Wave that can permanently alter the reality of their worlds. Sonic tries to use the wave to revert changes the villains made to his world but Dr. Eggman attacks him while doing so and causes their world's history to been rewritten. From issue 252 onward, the comic series takes place in a new continuity that follows the video game lore more closely but retains comic exclusive elements and characters from the animated cartoon.
Powers and Abilities[]
Dr. Eggman's main asset is his highly advanced intellect and scientific know-how (being the smartest character in the series with a 300 IQ, possibly higher). He has overwhelming scientific knowledge with expertise is robotics and technology. With this knowledge, he has built numerous weapons and devices. These include his Badnik robot armies and specialized robots, Metal Sonic, and armadas of flying warships collectively known as the Eggman Fleet. Other inventions include orbital space stations like the Death Egg, doomsday weapons, mind control devices, and machines that harness the Chaos Emeralds' power to bend time and space to his will.
Possessing keen vehicle intuition, Dr. Eggman has incredible skill in operating his various self-designed vehicles, from his own Egg Mobile to his various mechs and fighting machines. His piloting skill is rivaled only by Tails. Dr. Eggman was able to fight his way through hordes of GUN robots in his Egg Walker and even keeps Sonic on his toes when fighting.
Intellect aside, despite the doctor's round belly, he is quite physically powerful and durable, having been shown to be strong enough to destroy pillars, cars, and walls of ice with his fist with as much ease as Knuckles. Also, he is able to sprint at high speeds to reach his next escape vehicle or weapon. He is also quite manipulative and cunning, able to lure others into traps and exploit them to his advantage, especially Knuckles.
It is also said that Dr. Eggman is experienced at company management, having amassed huge profits through production of robot weapons and construction of related facilities.

Badniks[]

Small, weak, but mass-produced, and attacking in large numbers, and extremely versatile, these mechanical fiends come in many great varieties and they served Dr. Robotnik and they will hunt down Sonic the Hedgehog and anyone else who opposes the "good" Doctor.
Arguably more dangerous than the Doctor himself, this cruel and relentless robot has intense spite towards Sonic the Hedgehog, rivaling or exceeding Dr. Robotnik's hatred of the blue hedgehog. Metal Sonic was loyal to his evil creator in the 2D games, and some of the 3D games, but sometimes Dr. Robotnik himself struggles to handle this metallic speed demon and his occasionally rebellious personality.

Egg Carrier[]

Eggman's floating masterpiece, and flying fortress with a crew of Badniks, like E-102 Gamma as part of it. It was used by Eggman to release Chaos from the Master Emerald on Angel Island from thousands of years ago, in order to use Chaos to destroy Station Square, and build Robotnikland (Eggmanland). Sonic and Tails fought it twice trying to chase it, they failed to get on, once, but succeeded, once with the Tornado 2. Suddenly, Robotnik change the ship's shape, making it harder for Sonic and Tails to get to the bridge. After Sonic let Gamma go for Amy, the Egg Carrier began to lose altitude, and Sonic was able to change the ship back to its original shape. Sonic helped Big save froggy from Chaos, for round 1, and Knuckles took the six chaos emeralds from him for round 2, while Tails helped Amy escape, before ship crashed into the ocean, with heavy damage taken. The ship returned in the Solaris incident, in a different design.
A replica of the ship "the Egg Carrier 2" was launched to pursue Chaos upon betrayal, after destroying Station Square.
Egg Dragoon[]

The Egg Dragoon is known for being the most powerful of Dr. Eggman's creations. It has a notable size advantage against most of its enemies and its drill is made for attacking foes. In Sonic Unleashed it uses its drill in order to tear the Earth apart, meaning it must be extremely powerful. It can also do elemental slams with its drills, such as Ice, Electricity and Fire. Its cannon is obviously made for shooting. The rebuilt Egg Dragoon is a lot more lethal.
The cannons shoot even more fire and it can shoot ice from its claws. It can shoot both multiple small at the same time but can as well shoot a big wave. Egg Dragoon is a highly detailed robot with a lot of dragon-like details. It has a dragon like wings, a drill, big claws on its two feet, and a cannon. Its primary color is bright red, matching Dr. Eggman, but it also has light blue wings and an iron-like color on the drill and cannon. In Sonic Unleashed, Egg Dragoon is the second to last boss battle.
It was heavily researched and based on Sonic's movements and was supposed to be the ultimate weapon to kill off Sonic. The fight it had with Sonic was intense, and it destroyed layers of the Earth during the fight, but ultimately Dr. Eggman and his robot failed, and Sonic was sick of him and tore the whole robot apart and then threw Dr. Eggman away. The design in the mobile version of sonic unleashed is very different than the console version, as well as it is the final boss instead of Dark Gaia. In Sonic Generations, the Egg Dragoon is rebuilt and even more dangerous. It appeared out of nowhere really, but Sonic still managed to defeat it.
Egg Dragoon appears in the Sega video game, Sonic Forces. It is similar to how it was in the other games, except this time around, it is one of the first bosses in the game. This is an interesting fact considering in every other game it has been one of the last boss battles. It is fought in Green Hill Zone.

Death Egg Robots, Robot Eggmen, or Eggman Mechs are one of Eggman's finest robots looking exactly like him for combat, mostly fought in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 4, Sonic Generations, and Sonic Mania. Some Death Egg Robots are mass-produced since Sonic Forces. A more powerful death egg robot in three phases can be fought by Modern Sonic, Classic Sonic, and the player's Rookie, in the Eggman Empire Fortress in the end of Sonic Forces as well.

These two insectoid robots are fought two times in Sonic Unleashed. The Egg Beetle is fought at the beginning of the game, while The Lancer is fought at the very end of the game.
The Egg Beetle, despite its name, resembles a spider in appearance. It levitates above the ground and can fly at very high speeds.
The Egg Lancer is very similar to the Egg Beetle in terms of design, except this time it has a more intimidating and fierce design, along with an even more futuristic design with multiple laser guns that it uses.
Egg Cauldron[]

The Egg Cauldron is the only boss to have two phases in the Tornado-1 Defense Acts on the way to Spagonia University, and Eggmanland in Sonic Unleashed. Despite the doctor's assistant robot's warnings, Dr. Eggman had the incomplete Egg Cauldron fight the bi-plane, only to be forced into retreat. After being perfected, the Egg Caldron was sent to intercept Sonic, Tails and Chip when they were heading for Eggmanland, only for the vessel to face defeat again.

The Egg Emperor is the final boss in the first four main stories of Sonic Heroes, as well as the sixth boss in the 3DS version of Sonic Generations. With a huge lance it can swing to make shockwaves, and can even shoot missiles from its top cannons.
Over the years Dr. Robotnik had many musical pieces associated with him. Most of these were boss music in the classics, however, since the Sonic Adventure era the good doctor started getting distinct themes even outside of boss fights, such as Paul Shortino's "E.G.G.M.A.N." or the dark "Theme of Dr. Eggman" leitmotif which had been used since the 2006's Sonic the Hedgehog. "E.G.G.M.A.N." is considered his official and main theme, while "Theme of Dr. Eggman" is considered to be a warning/danger theme.
