~ Dio activating his Stand, "The World", often referred to by its Japanese pronunciation, "Za Warudo!". |
Dio Brando, later known simply as DIO, is the main antagonist of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise.
He is a megalomaniacal vampire who is the sworn arch-enemy of the Joestar family, becoming a burden to them even after his death, as well as being the arch-nemesis of Jonathan Joestar and Jotaro Kujo. Dio is hellbent on destroying them and the Joestar clan as a whole in his quest to obtain Godhood and take over the entire world.
He fathered Giorno Giovanna and three other sons, the latter three being under the rule of his friend Enrico Pucci, whereas Giorno became the boss of Passione to stop the drug trade. More than just a powerful vampire, Dio Brando himself wields the Stand known as The World, which grants him the ability to stop time itself.

Personality[]
“ | Living in the gutter, you learn to spot low-lifes pretty quick if you want to see tomorrow. I've trained my nose to sort out the bad ones from the good just from a sniff! This fellow reeks of brimstone and blood worse than anyone I ever laid eyes on! He is pure evil, right down to his very bones! Is he a victim of circumstance, you're wondering? Not on your life! He's been evil since he drew his first breath! | „ |
~ Robert E.O. Speedwagon giving Jonathan his assessment on Dio. |
While Speedwagon claimed that he was born evil, Dio's treacherous and insane nature may be partially affected by his abusive upbringing at the hands of an alcoholic father, whom he later killed. Dio is shown to be an extremely arrogant, cruel, ruthless, sadistic, domineering, manipulative, and ambitious megalomaniac. He will do anything to get what he wants, even if it means trampling people like he did to Jonathan Joestar when they were young and relinquishing his humanity in favor of becoming a vampire.
Dio is naturally charming and charismatic, and has no problem drawing cronies such as Vanilla Ice into his service through manipulation or his "flesh buds" that he implants in them - even still, he has shown an ability to attract followers even without mind control. Dio shows no care towards any of his minions, treating them as pawns in his quest for power and dominance, showing no regret when they are killed by his enemies, and even, on some occasions, killing them himself, such as Enyaba. He showed a degree of pragmatism in his favorable treatment of Enrico Pucci, but that could have been because of the potential role Pucci had in helping Dio achieve his goal.
Dio is a vain and prideful individual, frequently taunting his enemies and boasting about himself. He is prone to shows of his grandeur and talks down to his opponents.
However, DIO is not entirely evil, at least not at first, as (while coming from a source not confirmed to be canon) he respected his mother (being heartbroken by her death and was furious when his father told him to sell her dress), which caused him to kill his father as revenge for causing her death and would attack anyone who spoke ill of her. He also shows a good side to those who are good to him. In particular, he has shown extremely favorable attitudes towards Enrico Pucci, who also showed loyalty in return. DIO also has a passion for reading, as he is found in the library of his Egypt mansion at times.
Unless provoked or deemed an obstacle, DIO will normally not attack anything or anybody, although this is probably more out of regarding them as inconsequential, and as such unworthy of his attention, rather than anything akin to kindness or mercy. He will first try persuading people to work for him, then fight them if they oppose him.
Despite this however, DIO proved to be far more depraved and evil than he initially appeared, with his actions becoming more horrendous as the series progresses. He is willing to throw away, discard or destroy anything that holds him back in pursuing his insatiable hunger for power. Furthermore, his repeated lack of any empathy or conscience throws away any redeeming qualities he held at the start.
Dio does have respect for the inventions of the 20th century; being fascinated by the near instant capability of communications, electricity and automobiles.
Powers and Abilities[]
“ | Invulnerability! Eternal life! STAND POWER! Here lies the proof that none shall surpass the mighty DIO! Puny humans! I will rule you all! Bow before my power and knowledge! | „ |
~ DIO boasting about his strength after seemingly killing Jotaro Kujo. |
Vampiric Powers[]
After killing George Joestar and using his blood on Stone Mask to convert himself into a vampire, Dio became functionally immortal. His body no longer experienced diseases and the negative effects of aging, allowing him to stay in his physical prime for over a century. Furthermore, he could no longer die through conventional ways, such as decapitation, impalement, being burned alive or being splattered to pieces. Besides requiring to absorb blood, his body became self-sustaining, as he was able to survive locked in a coffin at the bottom of the ocean for over a century without any oxygen or blood.
As a vampire, Dio possesses a high degree of regeneration, as he's capable of regenerating from direct gunshots to the head, reforming his stomach after Star Platinum punched a hole in it, being vertically sliced in two, completely healing his body from third degree burns within a week. He can also reattach lost limbs by extending veins from the wound and recollecting them, allowing his flesh to once again meld together.
Although he's inferior to Pillar Men, Dio possesses vast amounts of supernatural physical strength, resilience, agility, stamina, flexibility and dexterity. He was stated to be five times stronger than Will Zeppeli and Jonathan Joestar combined, easily bending steel, ripping apart and punching through human flesh, as well as lifting heavy objects like road rollers. At one point, Speedwagon compared Dio to a cheetah in regards to speed, as he was able to jump several meters into the air and outmaneuver Jonathan.
Dio has a limited degree of biological manipulation, allowing him to create simple constructs out of his flesh, such as spore parasites. Said parasites are capable of inducing mind control, piercing victim's skulls, and gradually consuming their brain. If Dio were to die, surviving spore parasites would mutate their victim into a deformed abomination with regeneration exceeding Dio's own, as demonstrated by Mansaku Nijimura, who was able to instantly regenerate there destroyed head.
Like Esidisi, Dio can transmute flesh to fuse two organisms, making several bizarre animal chimeras that he would often keep as pets or minions. He would eventually use that ability on himself, fusing his disembodied head with Jonathan's decapitated corpse to lengthen his life.
Before losing his original body, Dio could absorb the heat of living beings he came in contact with, turning their flesh into solidified ice and killing them.
One of the most deadly abilities within Dio's arsenal was pressurized liquid blasts fired directly from his pupils. Referred by Straizo as "Space Ripper Stingy Eyes", these liquid blasts could instantly slice through stone and reach immense distances while maintaining their focused form.
The World[]
“ | You fool. Know this... The true power of The World is exactly that: the power to dominate the world! | „ |
~ DIO to Noriaki Kakyoin on the might of The World. |
In JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders, DIO obtained his stand, The World, from a stand arrow given to him by his most loyal follower (at the time), Enya Geil. The World is terrifyingly powerful, having the speed and punching power to rival that of Jotaro Kujo's Star Platinum. However, The World's most dangerous power is the ability to stop time, which DIO discovered when he ordered a servant of his to fire a shotgun at him in order to test The World's power and speed.
During stopped time, only DIO can freely move around. Those with the same ability to stop time can also move during DIO's time stop, but only for a short distance and period. The forces of any action DIO performs in stopped time (such as punching an enemy or throwing knives) resumes normally when time returns to normal, an example being when some knives he threw continued to travel through the air after time resumed. Originally, DIO could only stop time for 5 seconds. This limit would increase to 9 seconds near the end of his final battle with Jotaro, and 11 seconds by the time of his last stand.
Other Powers[]
By the latent ability of Jonathan's body, DIO also gained an unnamed precognitive Stand, which DIO used to track Joseph and the Stardust Crusaders.
Quotes[]

~ Dio Brando threatening Jonathan. |
“ | Hush, boy! You won't speak my name in vain again! | „ |
~ Dio Brando when Jonathan yelled his name. |
“ | Time to end this little pissing match. I'll beat him here, in his own home! Once and for all, he'll know his proper place in this world is under my heel! He'll see that is useless to trying to defeat me! I shall be master, now and always! | „ |
~ Dio Brando during his fight with Jonathan. |
“ | Wryyyyyyyy!!!!!!!! | „ |
~ Dio Brando's iconic screech of power. |
“ | Will A. Zeppeli: Tell me, to undo your injures, how many innocent lives did you consume? Dio Brando: I don't know, how many loaves of bread have you eaten in your lifetime? |
„ |
~ Dio Brando upon being questioned by Will A. Zepelli on the amount of lives he has taken, as well as his second famous quote. |
“ | You were a fool to attack me. I have disowned my weakness in favor of life everlasting! | „ |
~ Dio Brando |
“ | Oh, we are feeble, aren't we? You imbecile, you dare think you can lay a finger on me! (laughter) You're the one who's going to give up your life like some mongrel! Let's endeavor to give them a good show, shall we? | „ |
~ Dio Brando to Dire before fatally wounding them. |
“ | Really? The "Let's do battle!" stance? You're not serious. No matter how you prepare, human ability is extremely limited and finite. Your Hamon training avails you nothing. It's USELESS, USELESS, USELESS, USELESS, USELESS, USELESS! A MERE MONKEY CAN NEVER DEFEAT A LION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In comparison to my power, you are but a mere monkey, JoJo! | „ |
~ Dio Brando to Jonathan Joestar. |
“ | Now witness the power of The World. That's right. I've caused time to stop for you, which means, you won't see or feel any of this. Now die, Kakyoin! (...) You don't even realize you're about to die. In a way, you're lucky. You won't know what happened here, only that you're dying. | „ |
~ DIO to Noriaki Kakyoin after The World stops time and fatally wounds him. |
“ | Joseph Joestar: Jotaro! DIO's Stand, The World, gives him the ability to control time! Whatever you do, stay out of its ra- DIO: Once more, THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

“ | Come now, don't worry. At least he's joining Kakyoin. Polnareff must be hiding around here somewhere. Though, I guess it doesn't matter. | „ |
~ DIO taunting Jotaro Kujo after seemingly killing Joseph Joestar. |
“ | Jotaro Kujo: Damn you... DIO! DIO: Oh? You're approaching me? Instead of running away you're coming right to me? Even though your grandfather, Joseph, told you the secret of The World, like an exam student scrambling to finish the problems on an exam until the last moments before the chime... Jotaro Kujo: I can't kick your ass unless I come closer. DIO: Oh ho! Then come as close as you like. |
„ |
~ Jotaro and DIO's iconic altercation after DIO seemingly kills Joseph Joestar. |
“ | You fell for it, Jotaro! Now my victory is all but assured! ONCE AGAIN, MY GENIUS HAS TRIUMPHED OVER YOU! DOESN'T THIS STREET LOOK FAMILIAR?! | „ |
~ DIO gloating to Jotaro Kujo as he was flung to Joseph Joestar's location by Jotaro unwittingly. |
“ | You Joestars were always been a nuisance, so I think the time has come to put you self-righteous cretins in your proper place: beneath my boot! In the end, Jotaro, it would appear that the Joestars' destiny was to facilitate my ascenion to perfection! | „ |
~ Dio Brando gleefully gloats at Jotaro, having being finally awakened. |
“ | H-He's mocking me! But... But, Jotaro... You may have come this far, but you are still only human. You think like a human, who has so little time to live... About things leaving a bad taste in your mouth, or living your life with no regrets... That kind of reasoning is about as compelling as rat shit in the bathroom, and it'll be your demise! I, DIO, have no such thoughts. Within my mind is but one simple thought. Just one! To be victorious and rule! That is all. That is all I need to feel satisfaction! How I do it... DOES NOT MATTER! | „ |
~ DIO after Jotaro stopped time with Star Platinum to escape his "road roller" attack. |
“ | WHAT?!!!?!??!?!?? IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I-I'M DIO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I. AM. DIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! | „ |
~ DIO's last words. |
“ | What I need: My Stand. A friend I can trust. The souls of at least 36 people who have committed Ultimate Sins. The 14 Phrases. Courage. My decaying Stand will gather up the souls of 36 Sinners, absorb them, and give birth to something new. The last thing I need is a place. Go to Latitude 28 degrees, 24 minutes north, Longtitude 80 degrees, 36 minutes west... And wait for the next New Moon... The Time of Heaven... | „ |
~ DIO's words in his diary to achieve Heaven. |

Trivia[]
- Dio's first name is the Italian word for "God", but is also a reference to the American heavy metal band DIO, fronted by the late Black Sabbath vocalist Ronnie James Dio.
- In comparison, Dio's last name, "Brando", means Sword in Italian. It is unknown if "Dio" is either Italian or British in definition. It is also a reference to American actor Marlon Brando.
- Dio's stand is named the tarot card of the same name, which is the last card in the Major Arcana and symbolic of achievement and a pause in life before the beginning of the next cycle.
- Dio spawned a number of numerous memes among fans, including "It's useless/Muda", "Hinjaku Hinjaku/How Feeble", "Kono Dio Da!/It was I, Dio!", "Za Warudo!/The World!", "Oh? You're approaching me?", "Road Roller Da!", and "WRYYYYYYY!". This becomes one of the reasons why Dio has become popular in the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series.
- Hirohiko Araki considers Dio "the true protagonist" of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood, and Dio was made and makes his debut before Jonathan. Additionally, his "darkness" was meant to rival Jonathan's "light".
- Dio's return was inspired by Araki thinking that "evil from the past" would be a frightening thought.
- Dio's Japanese voice actor in the anime adaptation, Takehito Koyasu, said in his interview he "had a feeling" that Dio would be given to him to play.
- Dio is currently the icon for the Outdated template.
- In the light novel JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Over Heaven, it is revealed that Dio had a miscarried sibling, is aware of Diavolo's existence, and would consider starting a family with Enya Geil if she was younger.
- In a top ten made by Araki in 2000, Dio was placed as his tenth favorite character.
- Dio Brando's and Diego Brando's themes in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven are remixes of each other. The same is true for DIO's and Alternate World Diego's themes.
