| “ | He waved his hands wildly to ward off the attack he knew it was coming. And then there was a new searing pain, like a fiery knife in his belly. Nedry then stumbled reaching blindly down to touch the ragged edge of his shirt, and then a thick slippery mass that was surprisingly warm. Then in horror, he suddenly knew he was holding his own intestines in his hands, the dinosaur had torn him open, his guts had fallen out. Nedry fell to the ground and felt something scaly and cold. It was the animals foot, and then there was a new pain on both sides of his head, the pain grew worse and as he was lifted to his feet, he knew the dinosaur had his head in its jaws and the realization was followed by a final wish. That it would all be ended soon. | „ |

Dilophosaurus wetherilli, also known as the Dilophosaurus, is a minor antagonist of the 1990 techno-thriller novel Jurassic Park.
It is one of the clones bio-engineered by InGen from the preserved DNA of a medium-sized predator from the early Jurassic. This notable individual appears in one of the most infamous scenes of the novel, being responsible for the death of Dennis Nedry and unintentional subsequent collapse of the Jurassic Park on Isla Nublar. Following its actions, animals escape from the paleo-zoo and run off into the wild, killing many employees while it tries to mate with the other members of its kind. It is eventually killed in a napalm bombing.
Appearance[]
The Dilophosaurus is a slender theropod standing at about ten feet (three meters) in height and twenty feet (6 meters) in length. It has a yellow body with black spots and a long neck with two red V-shaped crests on its head. Given that it weighs one ton, the animal shakes the ground when it walks.
Personality[]
Like Velociraptors, the Dilophosaurus is a cold, calculated and cruel predator who employs the most horrible methods to kill its prey and have it suffer as it dies. Unlike them, however, it is more of a callous psychopath capable of switching between being a remorseless killing machine and an animal that only wants to survive by mating with others of its kind. It hunts by exploiting its prey's curiousness with its hooting calls, then spits at them several times before slashing open their stomachs and waiting a few seconds as they bled to death.
Abilities[]
- Venomous Spit: Dilophosaurus can spit venom projectiles at the distance of about fifty feet or fifteen meters. They contain seven different enzymes and can cause effects such as blindness, tingling or severe skin irritation. Its saliva is described as a dripping glob of foam.
- Sharp Claws: Dilophosaurus can lacerate a man in a single swipe of its arms.
- Enhanced Strength: Dilophosaurus can easily lift an overweight man by his neck.
Trivia[]
- The idea that Dilophosaurus has had venom is not supported by the fossils; it is based on Samuel Paul Welles' description of the animal having weak jaws, which would render it restricted to scavenging and killing prey smaller than it. Michael Crichton added an ability to spit venom to the dinosaur because he wanted to add a feature that is not visible in the animal's skeleton to drive home nature's unpredictability and how little we know of these animals.
- In 1986, the paleontologist Robert T. Bakker discovered that Dilophosaurus had a muscular neck and large upper teeth designed to kill animals bigger than it. Later, in 2021, paleontologist Matthew A. Brown and Rowe would deduce that this theropod had a bone-crushing bite, which combined with its well-adapted respiratory system and reinforced light skeleton made it an apex predator of its environment.
- Dilophosaurus, Apatosaurus, Dryosaurus, Nanosaurus and Callovosaurus (in some versions) were the only Jurassic animals within the novels' continuity.
- Dilophosaurus and Procompsognathus are the only known venomous animals in the novel's continuity.
